Sensational San Sebastian

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Visconti/ROAD_2015/0080_sanPsykopainted_zps1b4dab28.jpg

On the shorelines of San Sebastian hardly any dead man can be found when the waves tide over them and the sand quiets their torment. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any. Glory may have bene achieved, but underneath it is oftentimes the same old.

There has been a bruise of understanding and triumph surrounding our team when Tejay achieved the podium rank on le Tour. People claimed they knew that the team had it in them. Soon after, an article was published on an infamous Italian cycling blog, hyping us… celebrating the team’s staff, the riders… People congratulated me on the Tour result, although I had nothing to do with it. I didn’t want to have anything to do with it.

I came to the basque country from the Alpes of Austria, where I visited my grandmother. At San Sebastian, I met up with the team. I congratulated Thomas De Gendt and others on a magnificent ride. Thomas replied that he was still tired. Here in Spain’s sun, I felt much calmer at the start line than I did in the previous weeks. A beach is something wonderful for a turtle, but hardly a cyclist is a turtle. As a cyclist, you belong onto your bike. I was glad to be racing again.

The short break was needed and I felt great going into the race. Over the most climbs of the route of Clasica San Sebastian, I had no problems. Some of my teammates fetched me some bottles, I got into some good talks. I congratulated Alberto Contador on his tour victory, by now he knew my name too. You might remember that this wasn’t always the case.

At around 15 kilometers left, the race got interesting as a group of Spaniards, alongside Philippe Gilbert, attacked on Alto de Arkale. Contador, Purito, L.L. Sanchez, Moreno. You know those names – very big names. I didn’t want to follow them over the climb, but instead chose to keep myself on the front. In a turn of the downhill, I forced my luck and rode away from the peloton. We had Oscar Gatto for the bunch sprint, and so I was free to pursue it in this instance. Attack!

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Visconti/ROAD_2015/0080_san2_zps3355aafb.jpg

The following kilometers dragged themselves on, as I rode through the town of San Sebastian. I saw the Spanish riders for the longest time ahead of me. They didn’t have more than 20 seconds, at best. But it was hard to close them down. And with the peloton always in striking distance, I had a narrow margin. At no point did I feel tired and my legs never gave in, I was riding solid, riding like I knew I could catch them up there. And if I didn’t catch them in the next kilometer, than the next surely or the one following after that… I was feeling like this was an endless road until I’d catch them, like I had all the time in the world there. No pressure, boy. Not from the public, not from my manager. Forget Italy there for a second.

Going into the finale, preparing the constellations for the sprint or a final late-attack, I finally reached the five-man group. They were a bit surprised, and I immediately positioned myself behind Gilbert, fully aware that he was probably the guy with the strongest legs left. I played it tactical. Oscar Gatto was certainly on the wheel of some strong sprinter, ready to launch his sprint too out of the peloton. I looked back, there was the peloton coming down on us. When Gilbert got nervous and launched, I was right behind him… outmaneuvering Purito in one of those special seconds... passing Gilbert, rushing towards the line… A flicker image of what could be and a look back – there was Gatto, coming from behind, overtaking all those riders, coming in from behind…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Visconti/ROAD_2015/0078_san_zpsc8c15684.jpg

There was no way I’d let anybody take this victory from me in this moment. Not Gatto, not Tour de France champion Contador, not any damn journalists or tifosi out there. 200, 150… 100 meters… Do you know the drill of winning? I don’t. Not yet at least. I was raising my arms and laughing, and it was all right there for an instance. Losing my grip on reality, out of character for a second.

In the camp, I danced all on my own. My biggest win to date? Most definitely.
And when asked what I wanted to tell all those journalists, tifosi and riders who complained and insulted me in the previous weeks, I replied with harsh words, cursing them... Putting more oil into a dying fire, stirring up the fuse once again.
Admittedly, this was not my finest moment after one of my best races, but those… feelings had to get out, just like I had to dance and laugh after winning.

But I felt invincible, unbroken, unbend, and free…
free of those shackles. So,
kiss me girls,
and congratulate me like you mean it with all your heart.

Eat that, Italian press Grin

Awesome victory and amazing report. Loved to hear it from Raphael himself this time!

Vali
Wow that was one hell of Tour for Citigroup Grin
I didn't think that Van Garderen would be able to do so well Wink
And finally Congratz to that amazing victory in San Sebastian
Regarding the Italian press:
Maybe he should start for Austria, because the Austrian press cartainly doesn't care about Cycling Pfft

Totally Great result for Raphael and the team Grin

@Ian: Glad you liked it. I might have overdone it a bit with the journalist reports in the early season, trying to find the perfect balance now. Wink

@admirschleck: Thx mate

@Vali: You might be on to something there with Austria. Wink

@Martial1: Yeah, recent weeks have been quite fantastic for the team.

@sutty68: Yup, especially good for the team, all but surely avoiding relegation now thanks to T.J., Rapha and Gatto's second place now. Smile

After the Success!

Besides the Tour of Pologne, which was recently won by Rigoberto Uran Uran and saw a 6th place by Ivan Basso, who is slowly recovering from his injury, the past days saw the team heading out for a couple of more races.
Visconti, recent winner of Clásica San Sebastian, continued his racing at Trofeo Matteoti and later heading out for London, for the Ride London Suvey Classic, a personal favourite of Raphael as he told me. Unfortunately both races went rather unlucky, one time even having a mechanical late in the race.
Visconti then went on to race Arctic Race of Norway in preparation for Eneco Tour. In Norway, he was helping his teammate Elia Viviani achieve a stage win on the fourth day. For the young Austro-Italian, there has also been enough to snatch a good result himself though: He came in 10th overall! Surely another great boost of confidence after his win in the basque country.

At the Tour of Utah meanwhile, Tejay Van Garderen enjoyed his post-Tour de France glory and was cheered on by his many, many American fans. They really love him. Despite his drastic drop in form, Tejay came in third overall behind overall winner Ryder Hesjedal.

There's also some news on the transfermarket: Thomas De Gendt signed after his great Tour de France with Movistar. We wish him all the best!

Indeed, good results on all fronts but now it all counts for Eneco Tour. Cool

Some great results lately... Moser & T.J. did great at the Tour.. Raphael did the right thing when decided to not race the Nationals.. Suisse was good too, just like Pologne was.. Wink

The Rider
What a TDF that was, if you didn't sim it especially so. What a result! Cool

Very nice win at San Sebastian, the world champs could be in Raphael's reach, this season, with performances like that. The Eneco tour is coming up, Raphael has improved a ton this season, but it will be difficult to match his performances of last season at that race.

Shonak
@baia: Thanks. Yeah, the team's doing really good with consistent performances all over the place. Smile

@The Rider: I rode most of it though I simulated a couple of flat stages. No MT/HL stage simulated. Smile
Thanks. Yes, World Championships look like a profile suited to Raphael. I think they are in Belgium this year? Rapha's Eneco Tour last year was stunning and basically a kick-off to where he is now... let's find out how he does this year. Smile

Eneco Tour 2015

You may remember from last year that the ENECO TOUR is probably the stage race that suits me the best. I have won two stages last year here and claimed a 6th place overall. I’d like to repeat a similar feat this year and after my win at Clasica San Sebastian, I’m quite confident. I share the leader role with De Gendt and Gatto though.

Stage 1 – Mook
The prologue around Mook was a good race, however it’s not my type of discipline. I’m awful at Time Trials usually, and even at the finish line, I embarrassed myself when I almost crashed into Geraint Thomas. Both of us had a good laugh about it though, and congraluated him on a decent Prologue performance. He couldn’t beat Tony Martin though, who claimed the win.

Stage 2 – Beek to Coevorden & Stage 3 – Zuidwohle to Rhenen
The next two stages were calm days for me personally. I wanted to save my legs for the upcoming challenges and contrary to last year, I did not participate in breakaways or in crazy long-range efforts. However, after André Greipel won stage 2, Yves Lampaert showed that solo-efforts do get rewarded by taking stage 3. With 22 seconds, he merely hang onto his lead to the finish, but a glorious victory for the Belgian and Topsport Vlaanderen.
Bunch sprint win of Cavendish ahead of Greipel

Stage 4 – Eindhoven to Huur
Stage saw one of the reasons why I was riding Eneco Tour again this year: Muur de Huy. I came 8th at Fleche earlier this year, now I wanted to see how to master this climb in competition for next year. It’s a climb to make you suffer and want to survive. I wanted to best myself this time.
As usual, the Muur de Huy has been ridden two times before we hit into the finish. Katusha did a great pace for Rui Costa. The race has been hectic and at a time only De Marchi and I remained as Citigroup’s only riders in a small peloton. Luckily, the peloton came back together.
With some high speed, we then hit the last 10 kilometers. Boasson Hagen, last year’s winner, tried a move, I was following wheels of Gilbert and Rui Costa together with Gatto. Due to a little split behind Gatto, we had great cards. The Muur de Huy is about survival and playing it cleverly. I wanted to save my energy a bit, not burst out too early. When Gilbert went, I thought I could catch him in the less steep finale of the climb… well, I was wrong. But with a good acceleration, I passed Rui Costa, and finished 2nd. If only it was Fleche Wallone itself, I thought for a second.

Stage 5 – TT around La-Roche-En-Ardenne
The course of La-Roche-En-Ardenne was fairly hilly, and I felt like I had a shot to limit my losses. When I looked my end time, it was fair to say that I exceeded my expectations by far: I was 2nd behind my teammate Thomas De Gendt. My best time trial ever? The remaining riders didn’t top my time and at the end of the day, I was ranked third on the podium, looking good for overall contention. Rui Costa took the jersey from Philippe Gilbert.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Visconti/ROAD_2015/0082_enco_zps36507235.jpg

Stage 6 – Boutersem to Sint-Genesius-Rode
I aimed for a win today in order to take some bonus seconds. The route was too less difficult to try something from far out. To my bad luck, Philippe Gilbert ended up taking third and regained his leader’s jersey. He was now 11 seconds ahead of me. This meant that a mere stage win on the last stage would not be enough. André Greipel took yet another win, he’s in some crazy strong Post-TdF form.

Stage 7 – Zottegem to Ronse
Old places I know where on the menu today: Oude Kwaremont was one of few paved sections we would have to take on, several Hellingen would make for an exciting race. Citigroup made a high pace from far out, and after two steep, cobbled climbs, the peloton shrinked to a good size of around 25 riders.
I had some great support and we further decimated the bunch, chapeaux to all my teammates here. Cancellara put down a huge gear as he solo-chased us! But my team prevailed, and after the last passage of pave, I tried to sneak away together with Gatto. With us were three SKY riders (Sagan, Boasson Hagen and Stannard!). We had a great chemistr the five of us, and Sagan was determined to help me get the overall victory (or so he claimed). Unfortunately, Van Avermaet and BMC had something against that and they came back. Van Avermaet was flat out tired, so I tried another move. Gilbert as the race leader was marking me, Sagan was on my wheel too. I pushed and tried to shake them off both, but eventually had nothing left to give when Gilbert and Sagan passed me. The stage win went to Sagan, the overall victory to Gilbert, and I finished Eneco as second, first Runner Up, since Rui Costa lost quite some time.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Visconti/ROAD_2015/0083_eneco_zps61baf6ae.jpg

To finish here on the podium is surely a success but honestly, after San Sebastian and with the memories of last year, something is nagging on me. I had numerous podium finishes on stages, finish up second overall. I was close, so close.
But wait, well look at me... all getting over-ambitious. Of course, I should be more than happy to achieve 2nd in such a race against such competition. It shows how much I have improved. It may also show how much out of reality I am at the moment, wanting to win Eneco Tour at all cost.
I took the Young Rider competiton, always a nice icing on the cake for me. But still, I felt like I could have changed a few things, do somethings differently. Maybe than I would have won. But if's and when's are for sour losers.

I felt in shape, and I thought this season could end very well.

Impressive ride from Raphael, real nice!
Great report, too!

Wonderful report, and fantastic ride by Raphael! Second is not as good as winning, but there is no shame in losing to Gilbert. And he got the white jersey Wink

Thanks guys, it's been a very nice race for the team with Rapha being so good in GC and De Gendt taking a stage win. Smile
