Gora Euskadi! | Vuelta Summary
Shonak
So it's like I expected it to be: Photobucket limit is nearly reached so around March there may be some bandwith issues, but I'll want to finish the Vuelta definitely before that point. Until then... we still have a few gigs free though. May as well take good use of it. Wink

Vuelta a Espana, September 2013

Stage 17
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/stages%202013/eus_0117_zpsaa4caada.jpg
Obviously there’s some tiredness to be felt in the peloton so chances are good for a breakaway win today. However, with the formidable list of top sprinters at this race many teams will want to make a last stand before the final mountain stages are up.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0700_54_35-Greenshot_zpsd4a20525.jpg

Despite the climbs in the later part of the stage, Euskaltel – Euskadi has decided to take it lightly today so that we may take another mountain stage win. A group of 8 riders is up front, including O’Grady (OGE), Devolder (RTL), Iglinsky (AST), Paulinho (TST) and some others. Cannondale know that this stage suits Sagan perfect and were hard at work to never let the break get too far away.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0700_58_58-Greenshot_zpsa8bb1e77.jpg

Due to the hard pace by Cannondale and Lotto – Belisol british champion Mark Cavendish got dropped and he know has to rely on some riders from other teams to help him get back. He manages it about 5 kilometers later.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_01_22-Greenshot_zpsa238946d.jpg

But even though the group caught up to the peloton, Cavendish can’t be spotted in the stage’s final kilometers. Lotto Belisol and Argos Shimano have already set up their sprint trains. Goss is right behind Kittel, while Sagan is at about 7th or 8th position, who lends some wind protection to Kristoff behind him.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_03_11-Greenshot_zps34ce906a.jpg

A show of strength as Degenkolb has launched Kittel perfectly. This one should belong to the german supersprinter… well, but it doesn’t…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_04_10-Greenshot_zpsd98d4171.jpg

Sagan comes from behind and clearly shows that he was the one who saved the most energy. He overtakes Kittel in a matter of seconds. The german sprinter will be therefor still waiting for his first Grand Tour stage win in 2013.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_05_14-Greenshot_zpsc51e44b7.jpg

And it’s Sagan in a relatively normal winner pose! A bit of Caesar though can be spotted.

Stage 18
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/stages%202013/eus_0118_zps2f215464.jpg
With the General Classification all about decided, Euskaltel – Euskadi realized that their two top 5 ranks are probably as safe as it gets. More focus on stage wins again? About time, I’d say.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_14_55-Greenshot_zps4b4767e8.jpg

Awfully heavy rain looks to accompany the riders for the entire day. Egoi Martínez will still enjoy is time in the breakaway of the day alongside Damiano Caruso, Matteo Trentin, Simon Clarke and some others. Later on, some other riders join as well like Haimar Zubeldia (RTL) or Francis De Greef (LTB). And despite the constant rain, riders still need to drink and stay hydrated. So Egoi Martinez is smart and calls for some bottles. Good boy.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_21_18-Greenshot_zpscab8f86c.jpg

After a chain issue, Ruben Pérez just steps back into his clips while I manage to take this photo. The peloton is meanwhile already at the yellow flag in the background so he will have some catching up to do.

Spoiler

Pérez gets back while the peloton gets over all this climb. The break has about 6 minutes lead by now, still 100 kilometers to go though.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_30_22-Greenshot_zps4afd1b26.jpg

Still 40 kilometers and we saw some attacks by the likes of L.L. Sanchez, Geniez and some others. However, when Daniel Moreno attacks, one of our guys follows as well. It’s Igor Antón who reassured that he had great legs today (like for the first time in the the 3 weeks of Vuelta) and wants to try it today. The front of the race has still lots of time lead on him but well – why shouldn’t they lose it eventually.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_32_34-Greenshot_zps692e3d6e.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_33_48-Greenshot_zps18def0f4.jpg

Garcia from the ever-active Caja Rural squad joins them as well and in the storming rain and wind they already see Geniez up ahead. And the mountain summit is also there to be seen. However, back in the peloton, what isn’t seen, is that Froome from SKY paces one more pretty hard… so once more, thanks for that. Unfortunately though, Betancur attacks out of the peloton and soon all the favourites draw closer. In the end a group of about 25 riders is up front when the break gets caught.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_38_37-Greenshot_zps932a7061.jpg

The final very steep climb and Henao is leading the huge pack. And with his pace he destroys the group even more. Classic sky tactics in motion as we see how no one is able to hang on. Sánchez and Nieve take it a bit lightly today since there 4th and 5th place are for sure now against Froome.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_39_37-Greenshot_zpsf3c3dafa.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_41_09-Greenshot_zpsa3235acf.jpg

The last kilometer is set to hurt as Velasco, Garcia, Sánchez and Nieve lead the rest of the bunch to the finish line, while Moreno and Luis Leon Sanchez hold up surprisingly strong with the other riders although being dropped by now.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0701_43_37-Greenshot_zps445e42a5.jpg

Is Henao so used to winning stages that he has no need to celebrate or is he just tired and left without power? In any case, he takes another stage win. In case you weren’t counting: This is his third by now. A fantastic achievement by the young Colombian although we are missing a bit the thrill of the Vuelta of the past years…

GC-wise offers some changes. Igor Antón moves up some slots up to 14th, Chris Froome loses big time as he stayed in the peloton and falls back to 12th. Did he utterly bonk today? The weather might have made the difference or he just feels the power slip out after a long tough campaign so far. Nearly 24 minutes is a huge freaking time loss no matter what. Also, Alejandro Valverde came a bit closer to Betancur, so the Spaniard may still be able to prevent the Colombian double victory.

Another hard day in the mountains for Samuel and Mikel Frown

Shonak
There were certainly easier for the boys, but after so many mountain and hilly stages things take their toll on them. They have distance Froome for good though, so that was the better part of the day. Froome, 12th in GC. Who would have thought, eh?

Vuelta a Espana, September 2013

Stage 19
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/stages%202013/eus_0118_zps90bbb4f1.jpg
A hilly stage with lots of potential for our riders. Now that the GC seems to be more than secure we will try to get some breakaway action again.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0722_35_30-Greenshot_zps3ba87645.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0722_37_50-Greenshot_zps6da52e5b.jpg

Mikel Landa had a good day yesterday and he is certainly enjoying himself at the Vuelta this year. One stage win is already his, now he aims to go for the second as he is included in the break of the day. Weening, Salerno and Zaugg are with him and together they catch up to the group upfront. Since there’s also another break coming from the behind, they end up being a total of 12 riders and soon they have a comfortable lead on the peloton. The peloton at least doesn’t seem to take Landa serious despite his great 15th rank overall. Can’t blame them, Mikel is already over 50 minutes behind.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0722_44_55-Greenshot_zpsf075326a.jpg

Despite Brambilla being the only one to attack when it comes to the mountain sprints, nothing much is happening. The peloton has about 9 minutes gap with 30 kilometers left and the break might have a potential win. Landa’s toughest opponenst are probably Nordhaug (BEL), Weening (OGE), Zaugg (TST), Rujano (VCD) and the currently attacking Brambilla. Later on however Nordhaug crashes and it’s unlikely he can manage to get back in time.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0722_47_37-Greenshot_zps556f9d58.jpg

Meanwhile in the peloton, it’s the usual picture of Sky doing the work and the orange bunch calmly going up and down behind them.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0722_50_56-Greenshot_zpsc08b7da9.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0722_52_53-Greenshot_zps8516043b.jpg

When Brambilla goes for another mountain sprint, surprisingly Landa follows him. Bauer, Salerno and Rujano realize that this isn’t just an ordinary mountain sprint attack but a move for the stage win today. Quickly they get on the wheel, while Zaugg and others remain calm behind. Landa and others keep Zaugg & Co. on distance, while Brambilla still has some lead left after the second attack atop the little climb. The peloton has meanwhile seen an attack by Moreno and now Belkin is chasing him.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0722_54_51-Greenshot_zpsbc2bb821.jpg

It’s the final 5 kilometers and a tough steep climb is ahead of them, and for the front of the race, there’s one rider that seems incredible strong. When all his companions were caught by the other riders, he was the only one to push one. Katu told him “Gora! Gora!” and Gora he did. Just a quick attack and a bit of lead…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0722_57_03-Greenshot_zps6257fa78.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0722_58_04-Greenshot_zps2ae3df9a.jpg

But it just wasn’t yet meant to be as Silin, Zaugg and Rujano bring the group back to his wheel. But what’s that, has Silin cracked? He falls back and a gap appears which Rujano has to close now… only about 1.5 kilometers left…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0722_59_01-Greenshot_zpsae33d298.jpg

They come sprinting back again while Landa may have all the cards left as he launches his dangerous punchy acceleration.

Gora Mikel, Gora Dippofix, Gora Euskadi!

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0722_59_59-Greenshot_zps9221192f.jpg

Mikel Landa shows his impeccable late season form as he takes his second stage win here! What a performance once more by this youngster. Certainly one of basques biggest talents and today he proves it once more. You know. One stage win may be luck or good daily form, but a second one: Well, that may be class. Additonately, his instincts havn’t betrayed him and he truly took the racing into his own hands. He pushed on when others tried to quarrel over leading duties, he just sprinted when others wanted to catch a good wheel and of course – he once more eyed the perfect stage for him with the perfect group.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0723_01_18-Greenshot_zps3b5ced18.jpg

The remaining peloton comes in one at a time as they sprint it out on the last kilometer. We enjoy the view from up here.

Stage 19, Results

What a Great stage win for Mikel Grin

Seems like I missed many victories, nice work! Good job from Caja Rural too, by the way.

@sutty68: Thanks sutty. It sure was. His home soil is really turning Mikel's tide to his favor.

@Blueprint: Hey mate. Indeed we had quite a successful August month. Caja Rural are riding an amazing Vuelta, always up there with some riders. Hope all is well with your little family. Smile

Gora Mikel!!!, Gora Euskadi!!! Pfft Unfortunately, Samu and Mikel are too far of Valverde to reach a podium place. Looking forward to the tight fight for the 4° place, let the best rider be ahead of the another.

Close to the end and what a great Vuelta!

Another wun stage just as sweet as if it was the first one.Wink

And Samu did great sticking in the Top 5 with NieveGrin

Two stage wins for Mikel! Wink He will surely win this race sooner rather than later. Smile

It seems Henao is as dominant in the Vuelta here as he is in every Giro in my story. Wink

Shonak
@24sebaf1: The Angliru will determine who will be 4th and who 5th. Seems like the right place. Wink

@duxili: Indeed, only 2 stages left. Seems fitting. Grand Tours sure can take their time. Wink Samu sure has proven anyone wrong after the Giro performance that he was done for good etc with this Top 5 GC.

@The Rider: That'd be something if wins this race one day, but it's a long way from there. Henao is scary. Frown

Before we head into the Angliru stage, a little sum-up of Quebec.

GP Québec

Well, it’s one of the two Canadian classics. The road race in Québec has brought quite some success to Canada and cycling in recent years and the World Tour race not only offers some sweet points but also some cash and of course, always appreciated tv coverage time. It ends in a hilly finale after riding the climb multiple times. Men for a stage win are the Omega Pharma likes of Boonen, Kwiatkowski or Stybar. J.J. Rojas, Gallopin, Oss, Vicisio or Turgot might have great chances too. Euskaltel – Euskadi once more will focus its efforts on Clasica SanSebastian winner Ion Izagirre. His brother Gorka Izagirre has finished today the Monvizo and thus won’t be participating, but we will see him in Montreal in two days… In any case, there may be some tv coverage but we just don’t see it. Instead, I’ll tune in the last 10 kilometers…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0723_37_48-Greenshot_zps759e2733.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0723_38_50-Greenshot_zps25202a37.jpg

First picture and it’s a mass crash. As the peloton increases really high its speed the riders have to suffer the consequences. About 70 riders are involved.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0723_39_51-Greenshot_zps1ddc3a24.jpg

Bodnar (CAN) is leading a few seconds ahead of the peloton as he heads into the last 2-3 kilometers for good. I try to spot Ion Izagirre but I can’t find him yet…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0723_41_12-Greenshot_zps7e15a39f.jpg

Boonen, Debusschere and Meersman might be the strongest in the sprint but they can’t catch Bodnar again. The polish rider takes his biggest win today here in Canada.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-02-0723_42_04-Greenshot_zps9c2225b9.jpg

But poor boy is so empty, he doesn’t even have time to celebrate. Maybe he fears that if he raises his arm they catch him? Well in any way, he can celebrate now! Best Euskaltel rider is Ion Izagirre, achieving a solid 15th place.

Crashes everywhere in Canada Frown hope there were no injuries to ant Euskaltel boys Frown

And i am sure Ion will be happy with his 15th place though Wink

Shonak
@VoetsT: Yeah, but we didn't expect really much although both Izagirre have shown stellar performances in one-day races lately.

@sutty68: I think one or two of our boys crashed there, but no, fortunately no injures for them. 15th place is okayish. Smile
