Tour de France – Stage 20
There wasn’t much time for celebrating yesterday, as the party is postponed till today’s parade stage. I have tried this thing before in the Giro last year, where I really enjoyed it. I remember me being more fit last year though. Anyway this is something you dream of as a professional cyclist – riding at the Champs Élysées, and in spite of my tiredness I didn’t get much sleep last night, maybe also due to the fact what had gone down yesterday on the road. It’s a big confirmation for me today as a cyclist to have completed by first Tour de France. I’ll definitely be back.
We’re finally here!
First part of the stage was just a lot of messing around talking to all the other riders who have made it through, which is 155 of the 198 who took off in London three weeks ago. I think that’s the beauty of the Tour. The difference between the first and the last stage. On the first stage everybody war nervous, jostling for positions and not very friendly. Now, on our ride into France everybody is just having a laugh, maybe not Contador and the Astana boys, but the rest of us are and the atmosphere was just incredible along the course.
Me sitting next to our two jersey winners – Thomas and Edvald.
We would be racing a bit unfortunately, but somehow the relief of finally having made gave me my second wind, and I was feeling a bit better today than the last three – five stages. Marc De Maar and Benoit Sinner broke away right when we started racing and they hit the Avenue first. After some time we started chasing alongside Liquigas and I was the first rider in the pack to hit Champs Elysees. What a feeling that was.
Tom Boonen hasn’t the best of Tours, but his Quickstep team was confident of winning him the stage today as they hit the front and quickly reeled in De Maar and Sinner. The traditional mass sprint finish was imminent.
At this point I just fell back to Dekker along with all of my teammates, with the exception of Edvald and Mark of course, who would try and take the victory. Edvald would lead out Mark and the Norwegian blitzed through the last bend with Cav in his wheel!
Sutton came from behind and the Aussie was looking strong, so Mark had to make his move!
Can Mark take the ultimate sprinters victory at the Champs Elysees?
Sutton has been strong the last week though and he took the lead!
Victory at Champs Élysées for Christopher Sutton! Mark 2nd, so unfortunately he couldn’t win the stage he wanted the most.
Here ends my Tour de France!
Blood, sweat and tears brought me here.
And a fraction of a second later, Dekker is now official Tour de France Champion!
A big day was far from over as we also were going to do some presentation laps, which was a big experience for me. Especially as the speaker said Vainqueur de la Liège-Bastogne-Liège, when calling my name. Even bigger was that I got to get on the final podium as we had won the Teams Competition. Standing there in the middle of this great avenue, with my teammates, whom I have fought with to win Le Tour de France in three weeks, was just something I cannot describe. Well, I’m off to celebrate now. I’ll update my blog in a few days to let you know what’s next for me. Something I can’t think about right now.

Jonas’ Corner
– Downer of the Century…
…was probably not the headline you’d expected from my first blog entry since the Tour finished now just two days ago. What can I say? I feel deceived by him, no doubt. There I was, working my behind off for him for three straight weeks in the most inhuman terrain you will ever experience in a bike race, and then he is not the true champ after all. More like a true fraud rather.
I am of course talking about Dekker, yes our beloved captain for the main event of the season, until we discovered just yesterday, the next day after having celebrated him as the hero of the cycling world, that he wasn’t clean on the stage to Alpe d’Huez, which he by chance won. It has ruined everything for us now. Not just in the Tour de France, but my win in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, will now have a shadow cast over it, since Thomas was a big factor in me crossing the line first in Ans.
I was planning to race Clasica San Sebastian in a few days, but the team has pulled itself from all competitions until further notice, and the future doesn’t look good, as there are rumors coming in that Team High Road will be disbanding by the end of the season, because of this massive doping scandal. Dekker has been revoked of his title and rightly so, that belongs to Contador for the third year in a row now. Seems like no one can beat him without cheating. Ecstasy has truly been replaced with disgust, and I’m not going to talk with him ever again. This is just too much for me to bear right now.
Before I wrap up I have some info regarding my programme, if the team wants to race that is. I am taking August off and then I’ll begin to build my form for the Worlds in Vattenfall CyClassics and thereafter I will take part in Tour of Missouri for the first time in my career, while my last two races before Cagliari will be GP de Wallonie and GP d’Isbergues.
Nothing but a cheat.

Wow. I just finished reading this entire story. It took about 2 hours, and I am a better person after doing so. Thank you niconico for such an amazing story, I wish I was on PCMDaily when it was going.
Two years later, it is still alive! |

Still have the savegame somewhere, and when I finally get some time (could be a while), I'll convert it and continue this one.
