There’s a few hills along the way, but the serious ones should be too far away from the finish line to have much effect.
With the top German sprinters along with several other strong names such as Hanzen, Strömberg and Bennati here we should be in for a brilliant sprint considering the race category even though everything less than a victory has to be considered a failure for Team Argos – Shimano!

Dermot 'bouncing bomb' Walker
The nationality bonus should make the sprint super human between Griepel and Kittel, 3 of my lead out are German so in theory we should be dominant...

One hell of a race I have to say having just finished racing it!
Best edition of Finanzplatz I have ever seen!!
If you are lucky and behave nicely you'll get the report tonight, but first I have to go away for a bit

The first 40 km is one wave of attacks after another with almost everyone but Argos and Lotto taking part.
No one gets away before the climb up Feldberg begins though.
The gradient encourages yet another wave of attacks after some quiet km. This time it seems more solid.
Chérel is first into the wet descent followed by Pomoshnikov, Brown, Stauff, De Negri, Erviti and Delapaplace with 1’53 to Tiernan-Locke, who have just attacked and built a gap of 33 seconds to the peloton.
Kluge falls victim to the difficult conditions today. Fortunately he didn’t take anyone else down with him.
Things are taking a surprising turn as Cofidis sends three riders in a break hoping to bridge the gap just before the road goes flat again.
On one side the move works, but it also encourages Argos and Lotto to up the effort back in the peloton and with 110 km to go the gap goes under a minute.
Surprisingly most of the break is allowed to go away again and when they reach the top of Mammolshain for the first of three times 12 riders have 3’04’’ to the peloton. The biggest gap all day!
The 12 are: Zingle, GarcÃa & Petit (Cofidis), Nocentini (AG2R), Rebellin (CCC), Day (UHC), Drucker (Accent), Von Hoff (Garmin), Mørkøv (Saxo), Thwaites (NetApp), Lang (IAM) and Stauff (MTN).
90 km and 4’45
80 km and 5’44
70 km and 5’37
Argos and Lotto are working excellent together in a common mission. Fischer, Bak and Dumoulin seems to be pulling the biggest workload at the moment.
60 km and 5’18
It looks like a big advantage for the break to have three Cofidis-riders in here.
Bennati tries an attack when the main group reaches Mammolshain again with 50 km to go.
The break has just under 4 minutes advantage now.
Bak and Fischer just keeps on pulling and breaks the peloton on the process. Greipel just hangs on to the back of their small group, so no reason to stop for the Lotto-riders even though Degenkolb is in here as well.
They are reeled back in, but it serves as a warning to the rest of the sprinters.
With 30 km and the last trip over Mammolshain done with things are split to pieces:
GarcÃa, Zingle, Rebellin, Nocentini & Day
|
+ 0’26’’
Drucker, Von Hoff, Thwaites, Lang, Petit & Mørkøv
|
+ 0’41’’
Stauff
|
+ 0’50’’
Bennati
|
+ 0’16’’
Degenkolb, Kittel, Vachon, Martens, Dumoulin, Kruijswijk, Fischer, Greipel & Bak
|
+ 0’44’’
47 riders
Incl. Ciolek, Hanzen, Farrar, Strömberg, Cristobal Riquelme, Rojas
|
+ 1’34’’
13 riders
|
…
20 km and the five in front has 46 seconds to the six chasers, who have just under a minute to the Argos/Lotto group 40 seconds ahead of the other favourites.
The main chasing groups seems to be about to reunite in spite of Kittel and Degenkolb both working in their group. 15 km and the Argos group has caught the group ahead of them with still just over half a minute to the main group and exactly a minute to the front 5.
10 km left:
-- 1’19’’ - | Peloton | - 0’32’’ - | E2 | - 0’48’’ - | E1 |
The 21 riders in front are united with 5 km to go. The main group now trailing by 52 seconds.
This will come down to whoever has the most left.
Greipel have been sitting at the back all day. Either he is not feeling great or he will be the by far freshest in the sprint.
With 2 km to go everyone is waiting around for everyone else it seems and no one have organized a train.
They wait around too long so when they start sprinting with 1 km to go the main group is starting to catch up with them.
800 m to go it’s Greipel, Kittel, Slagter, Dumoulin, Zingle
400 m it’s hard to imagine anyone challenging Greipel and Kittel
Greipel holds on to take the win!
The sprint for 3rd is much closer.

Thwaites with some good racing. 22th too bad they couldn't fend off the peloton... or rather, too bad they were playing tactical games apparently by waiting around. Grrrz!
Great report Atlantius & thx for posting tonight.
