STAGE 19: Salamanca - Avila 162 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Van der Sande(AES) **Battaglin(EML) *Gautier(DYN)

A hilly stage incoming, nothing to trouble the GC men though.

De Cuevas wins a second stage for Caja Rural. He, Italian champ Moser and Monier attacked to form a strong break with 90 kilometres to go instantly passing the already established break of Nerz and Swift Metcalfe.

The peloton didn't chase and De Cuevas had more left in the legs than the former world champion.

STAGE 20: Avila - Navaluenga 137 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Pinot(KAT) **Gautier(DYN) *Eijssen(RAB)

The last road stage is classified as mountainous with three peaks. However, the last climb tops at 24 kilometres from the finish, 19 kilometres @ 5.7% which means a large GC group should sprint together.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0290_zps3e32fea5.jpg

Onto the final climb. The break have a substantial advantage.

With 5 kilometres to go on the climb Vanendert attacks, Teklehaimant, Pinot and most of the other GC men also attack. We put Felline and Al Ghanim on the front to control things...

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0292_zpsaec7e41a.jpg

Towards the top, Stortoni is towards the rear of the group, Izagirre sees this and ATTACKS. He joins up with Pinot on the descent.

But the Stortoni group also joins up with Izagirre on the descent, a 35 man GC group will come in together...

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0295_zps89721686.jpg

But the win goes to the break. Laurent Didier surprises everyone and is the strongest from the break, he will solo to victory saving a meagre Vuelta for big guns ExxonMobil.

Only the Time Trial remains.

Yeah just a flat TT to go in this Vuelta, lets hope Stortoni doesn't produce an epic TT from nowhere and leapfrogs Izagirre, which has been known to happen in races like this in the past. Frown

Hope Pinot has a classic fail in the time trial Wink

STAGE 21: Alcoron - Madrid 32 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Kritskiy(QOS) **Pinot(KAT) *Dumoulin*(ARG)

Here it is the final stage, ending bam smack in central Madrid, a grand occasion for the grand finale. We have a pretty much flat TT to finish this drama packed race, Kritskiy is the favourite but if this race is anything like the Tour then he will finish well down.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0303_zps22b25c18.jpg

Kritskiy. our Russian champ, has had an anonymous Vuelta compared to the Giro, but his teamwork can't be discounted. He......was on a great day.

He finishes 2'48 faster than outside stage tip Aramendia @ 45'27, surely he can't win it, passing Palazzo and Davidson in the progress.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0307_zps5ca99b0a.jpg

In truth as the final three men come off the ramp, no one looked to trouble Kritskiy's time.

Our GC leader Izagirre has the advantage of setting off after Stortoni, I was constantly relaying time gaps to the Spaniard.

At the first checkpoint, Izagirre... is 31 seconds up in Stortoni, ride it home!

Pinot goes fastest at the first checkpoint '7 faster than Kritskiy..

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0309_zps68be2cc4.jpg

With under 5 kilometres to go Izagirre is absolutely on the limit but he can see Stortoni ahead, he has done it, he would finish second . Yes!

But could we get a stage win to boot.... at the second checkpoint Pinot is only '3 seconds up on Kritskiy....

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0311_zps85e53106.jpg

STAGE WIN QATAR OPTICS! Kritskiy ends up winning by '51 seconds, Pinot really slowing in the final no doubt taking in his second grand tour win. 2 stage wins for us! Izagirre finishes sixth on the day in the Grand Tour of his life.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0314_zps3b6fe195.jpg

Pinot wins the Vuelta from Izagirre and Stortoni. Pinot also takes the points, whilst De Clercq takes the polka dots. Katusha win the team title @ 9'36 over Bretagne, we were third.

If you said Izagirre was going to finish in the top 5 I would have thought you were crazy but there we have it, what a Vuelta, I will remember this one for a long time. On the last stage we have manage to fulfil our goal of two stage wins. Overall: Excellent!

A Banana for the stage win and another Banana for the GC podium. Grin

@ Miguel - Banana YEAAHHHHHH!

What a way to finish, denying Pinot of a sixth stage win and claiming second overall!
I really hope Kritskiy can hold some form for the world champs, then you never know........... Shock

MrUfo87
Great stage win! Grin Too bad you didn't had Van den Broeck here. because then the gc win was maybe possible. But a second place is great for a team as yours. Wink And I'm feeling there's another request coming up. Wink

CHAOS wrapped around western Europe on the 11th September 2019, huge wind storms well in excess of 150 mph known as a Derecho, caused widespread destruction from Cornwall, England as far east as west Germany.

This meant two races were affected we were taking part in had to be cancelled, le Fleche Seraingese was cancelled whilst Stage 3 of the tour of Britain was also cancelled, however the tour of Britain will continue on stage 4.

The natural phenomenon's severity is considered one of the strangest events to hit the world in modern years, it was predicted and loss of life is reported as minimal.

@ MrUFO Thanks! But V.D.B is past it! I don't know why Pinot was here anyway, most of the other exceptional GC men skipped la Vuelta. There are plenty of good time trialists out there! Pfft

The tour of Britain was a hard one for the team, half the squad (CASTRO, AL ZAID AND AL MUWALID) all abandoned in the rough conditions. The highlights for the team were a 3rd place for Long on stage 6, from the break and Yildiz finishing 7th and 9th in the bunch sprints on stages 7 and 8 with Cziraki getting into the break on stage 7.

Pretty abysmal in truth, but you can't win them all.

As I had some time off with the word champs on the horizon I decided to spend some time with my oldest sun Eddie. We went to the virtual reality centre in Bruges to try out the moon simulator.

Whilst harvesting wolf cheese from the moon in this unbelievably real 'unreal' experience I talked a lot with Eddie, he expressed his interest to join a cycling team..... as a very early birthday present I told him to wait and see what Frederic will bring!.....

@ Sutty - I'm still gobsmacked by the podium! Smile

The world champs are here, Nurnberg in Germany is our venue as ever we will be starting with the time trial. I will be on the Belgian support staff but I will be cheering everyone on, especially the Qatar Optics riders taking part, present and future.

The course is a difficult one with long downhill and steep uphill sections, the winner? Take your pick..

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0317_zpsc7a33157.jpg

World TT champion Phinney is one of the first dozen or so riders off the ramp and.... he will not be world champion this time around, he was '1 behind Meyer at the first and only checkpoint and finished well down.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0322_zps8cbd9b67.jpg

Slik set a fast time at the checkpoint (29'14) which was '1 seconds faster than Meyer, HOWEVER, this course and discipline is all about managing your effort.

Slik finished @ 1'05'27 almost '30 seconds slower than Meyer, who finished @ 1'04'59.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0321_zpsed12e100.jpg

Vuelta champ Pinot was here for France.... and nether looked to feature he was @ 29'34 at the checkpoint and would finish 1'05'56... With more and more riders finishing the time set by the Aussie was looking better and better...

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0323_zps31a909f8.jpg

Qatar Optics rider, next season, De Gendt was the great hope of Belgium @ the first checkpoint he goes fastest @ 29'08, when.....

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0324_zpse95f6a1e.jpg

our Russian behemoth Kritskiy comes off the ramp and he goes fastest @ the checkpoint @ 29'05:

Best time at the checkpoint:Kritskiy: 29'05
De Gendt: 29'08
Slik: 29'14
Machado: 29'22

De Gendt finishes..... down on the time of Meyer @ 1'05'01, two seconds slower... Going fast early on matters little, is Meyer on for a victory?

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0330_zps2fe1d98f.jpg

Roux, Van Garderen, Herrada and Craddock......ALL of those favourites, don't feature. Roux was even '41 seconds down @ the checkpoint.

Only Kritskiy can stop Meyer, as he approaches the finish line, almost catching Herrada the difference will be..... seconds!

The audience tense, can Kritskiy do it?

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0331_zps2bd71be9.jpg

1'04'54

Kritskiy does it! WORLD CHAMPION KRITSKIY, WORLD CHAMPION FOR QATAR OPTICS! Tim Kritskiy is the new time trial champion of the world, just by five seconds over Meyer and 8 seconds over De Gendt.

I went over to Tim, ecstatic, gave him a huge man hug! Qatar Optics has in its ranks the world champion, you better believe it!

For the world championship road race we take in a number of laps around Nurnberg, including a very steep hill with percentages around 20%, the strongest will survive.

RACE: Nurnberg- Nurnberg 273 KM's

Race Favourites:
***Van der Sande(BEL) **Battaglin(ITA) *Pere(FRA)

Double classics winner this year Van der Sande is the favourite, but that means little with the quality present here.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0346_zpsc64a3a6d.jpg

Early on the race was marred by a mass of crashes, Salomein (Belgium) was involved and would later abandon. A 6 man break forms included Thomas (G.B).

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0349_zps0bd7b935.jpg

France, Belgium and Holland are the main countries controlling the race. With 160 kilometres to go Uran and Vilela attack and will bridge across to the break before joining them and passing them.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0350_zps74008f62.jpg

With 120 kilometres to go Van der Sande falls.... he will struggle ever after . He would be dropped with 60 kilometres to go and would finally be dropped for good with 30 kilometres to go in a group including Battaglin.

The peloton catches the break with 20 kilometres to go, about 20 riders at the head of affairs, Albert and Vanendert still there for Belgium..

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0360_zps164e0223.jpg

Then Sorenson attacks, he is brought back and on the final really steep climb with 13 kilometres to go he attacks again....

Vanendert attacks up to the wheel and....passes with a grinding tempo to lead the race with 11 kilometres to go.

Brief attacks from Slagter, Phelan and Kreuziger.... get nowhere. There is no consistent chase...

VANENDERT IS THE WORLD CHAMPION! He was the strongest man on the day and wins with a huge margin back to Slagter and surprise podium man Garcia. A great day for Belgium is proven with Albert also finishing in the top 10.

Afterwards Jelle Vanendert was interviewed and he confirmed that he still wishes to retire at the end of the season, stating winning the world championship is a great way to leave.
