Time for some small French hills today. Again a combination of captains getting warm and domestiques being allowed to chase their chances.

It’s tough for the break to get away today, and it takes a few attempts before e decent gap is made.

15 km to go and Lasse Bøchman is in the break just over a minute ahead of the peloton.

1.5 km to go. Lasse was working hard to last, but just got company by Michael Matthews. Not looking too good for the sprint I guess…

Right on the line the peloton catch up with the duo, but Lasse hold on to get a 3rd. Still a good result.

Off to Spain. This is usually a race for the strong sprinters. Last year Kasper Jebjerg finished second and we will be looking for another good result this year.

Bäckstedt gets in the big break of the day along with 13 other riders.
With 40 km to go Type 1 and Landbouwkredit lead the peloton chasing the sprint finish.

Just as the break is caught with 9 km to go Euskaltel – Euskadi decide to crash the party (Sorry: Bad pun, I know).

Kjell is feeling great today so on the small hill with 8 km to go he attacks and is joined by Domagalski. The two quickly builds a lead of more than a minute.

Domagalski won’t help and Carlström won’t just do a leadout for him, so 2 km from goal the main group manage to catch up with them.

Exclusive Interview – Thor Hushovd

First congratulations on a splendid Tour de France. I dare say you surprised quite a lot of people with your green jersey win. When did you decide to aim for your third green jersey?
Really it was never a target to begin with. I was only chasing stage wins and got a few decent placings in the first week, but I think it was obvious for everyone that the new guys on the stage are way faster than me in a straight sprint, so I started chasing the stage win in breaks as well. And even that took a couple of tries before succeeding.
Then all of the sudden the teams fans started posting that they believed I could get green. I didn’t really agree with them, but figured I might as well at least put of a fight in their honour.
I wouldn’t have gone for it without the fans support and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of my teammates. Especially Michael (Færk Christensen) was amazing in his selfless support.


Will you be back aiming for Green next year?
I really don’t think so, but then again I didn’t think so this year…


Sorry to be bringing this up, but following your amazing season and the many surprises from the young riders on the team there has been some mumbling in the corners about your methods…
I don’t quite follow you here, I’m sorry...


OK, then let’s put it a bit more clearly: Are you or any of your teammates using doping?
WHAT!? I thought The Rear Wheel was supposed to be “Behind Nordic Cycling”!
Lars Michaelsen have been a great trainer for me and the management are very good at spotting the best opportunities.


Sorry, but I have to ask these questions you know. Can I write that you clearly dismiss all rumours?
That story is so completely outrageous that I won’t even comment on it. This interview is over!



June in Cycling:

Rider of the month: Alberto Contador, Saxo – Tinkoff. GC win, mountain jersey and three stages in Tour de France. Guess this award was pretty obvious…
Nordic rider of the month: Thor Hushovd, Falcon – STARK. For a long time we thought that Nicki Sørensen would pull this one with his win in Austria and great riding in Poland, but Thor’s massive performance stealing the green jersey in the last week of Tour de France is one of the grandest and most surprising achievements in modern cycling.

SSJ2Luigi: It'll certainly be interesting to see what Rabo can do with Evans and Boom - but then again they had to do something after losing Boonen to RadioShack next season...

Ian: Well those rumours always appear when a team/rider is performing much better than expected Sad
As to chasing green next year that will probably depend a bit on sponsor goals, the route and Thor's level next season. After all he has a hard time riding top 5 in the bunch sprints so he will have to find the points somewhere else...

sutty: Not the strangest transfer in the game I think. Orica would have been the obvious choice but when that is said Evans need to find a team that doesn't expect its captain to win the Tour and Rabo could do with an experienced GC rider and a rider that can win them the points they will loose with Boonen.
For me the weird part is that BMC is letting them go. Evans is their by far best stage racer and the rider with 2nd most points on the team. Boom is 3rd BMC rider in the rankings, so this is going to hit them hard!

But it's always fun to see PCM-transfer logic :lol:

Two-day stage race. Last year Kjell Carlström placed second in the GC. This year we will be gunning for victory!

Today is classified as flat, but three KOM sprints within the last 15 km could mix things up.

As usual time for a breakaway early on. Christensen find his way into it hoping to achieve a bit more than he did from all his breaks in the Tour.

With 30 km to go Orica and Liquigas have brought the gap down to 2’30’’

18 km to of and Michael tries to do it alone. He gets a good gap and wins all three KOM sprints.

Breaks have a really tough time today.

Still Nissen finds himself a nice spot in the first halfway successful break of the day.

This could have been a great opportunity, but sadly Søren is not having the best of days…

Knowing that victory is unlikely with Euskaltel chasing behind I told Søren to give it what he has chasing the mountain jersey instead. De Segovia really made him work for it and with only one hill left the two has the same number of points!

Meanwhile Euskaltel and NetApp have pulled the peloton apart leaving a frontgroup of 65 riders chasing the break.

On the final the break has to give up. Nieve use the hill to attack, but Nissen gets second and secures the jersey.
The last 15 km is more or less nothing but attacks. Still no one actually manage to build a gap and the stage win goes to a home field favourite.
