Rabobank deserved the win anyway. They were in virtually every attack at the strade bianchi..
First Kruijswijk tried... then Tankink (who had bad luck) and then Weening.
They also had Slagter in that 2nd group until he fell... so actually they had 4 man in the favorite group with 2 men falling out due to bad luck (tankink and slagter). Pretty strong.
Kruijswijk was pretty hopefull. Last year 18th in his first giro while losing 30 minutes on the flat stages (and winning 12 back in l'aquila and another few minutes in another break).
This year he is already 8th in the GC before the mountains without losing time.
But the field is stronger. I'm curious to see where he ends up.
Weening is nice but he won't hold pink for long, I think he'll lose it on friday already. But at least he got the stage win and pink jersey, first one for the dutch since 1999 |

After a look at the race results after watching the highlights, I'm surprised to see Szmyd and Hoogerland so far back (unless they crashed, like Porte). |

Szmyd is a helper, so he probably saves his energy for the mountains. Hoogerland lost time on every stage so far. So either he is not in form or he goes for stage wins. This is also what Vacansoleil says.
Hoogerland for stages and Carrara for a top 10. |

Someone had +5 form of the day.
Edit: He's even 5th
Yup, seems like he has a surprisingly huge development uphill this season, which means he's "Wiggins-style"-underrated in every DB now.

Hoogerland was likely saving forces, but I don't think it's a good idea for helpers to save themselves in a stage such as this, where a puncture or a fall for the team leader could be a disaster if he's alone, so I'd say Szmyd either fell or had a mechanical. |

The gravel roads also help, as in Eroica he has had some decent results, most recently with a top-10 this year. |

Garzelli managed to hold on and finished 15 though.
I know, but he couldn't follow Lövkvist on the steep part of the climb.
So what? Garzelli is past his peak already for years now.
If he managed to crack Contador or something, that would have been news. Now it's just meh... |

I'm just happy that Lövkvist is doing well. I know I'm a bit nationalistic, but it's nice to see him this strong.

I've got to agree. It's nice to finally see Lövkvist in action. I'm not sure that Garzelli is that bad, either. We won't really know until the first mountain stage.

Like roturn said, Szmyd is saving himself for the mountains. He is there to help Nibali, not compete in GC. No point in wasting effort. |

I hope for you guys that Löfkvist can handle the 3rd week. Wouldn't be the first time he failed there.
And even then... I'd be suprised if he gets a top 10 |

Over-excitement only leads to dissapointment, I have LOADS of experience with that
Better not too expect too much.
F.ex this season everytime I expect nothing Rabobank wins a race somewhere |

Yeah, when you were so negative that you felt SA were as successful as the Netherlands the only way was up.

Great win by Weening, interesting stage indeed
And you Sky fanboys make this thread very difficult to read (i like them too but we must admitt none of them is serious contender yet). And droping old-man Garzelli for a while is nothing so fantastic as Ruben mentioned already,so calm down
Go Roman!

Just to round off this Löfkvist discussion: He's stronger than ever this year, so I'm just enjoying to watch it. I hope he will stay strong in the third week too.
Good luck Thomas.
