It does sound like an axis of evil, but it doesn't explain why they at one point decide to go to Discovery |

he's 36, so it's only natural there aren't that many ProTour teams wanting him. he's good but can't give many more years

Gonna retire after year or two..but why every team want him. Ofcorse he is great team mate as rider..but one and very strong positive thing about Horner is that he is spirit maker..he is most of the time happy person,,and this gonna effect also to other riders. Strange but this seems to be so important inside the team atmosphere and horner is one of the best at this job.

Veneberg to sue Rabobank over contract
Thorwald Veneberg is going to sue Team Rabobank because he has not been offered a new contract for 2008. The Dutch rider claims that under Netherlands law that, since he has had a contract with the team since January 1, 2001, he should be considered under contract for an indefinite period of time.
The 30 year-old Veneberg was a solid member of the Rabobank team, and won the 2005 Grote Scheldeprijs - Vlaanderen before suffering a horrendous 2006 season which saw him sick or injured for most of the year. He recovered and was back racing for the team in January's Tour of Qatar, and put in a full season.
His lawyer, Frank ter Huurne, said that under Dutch law, an employee is considered to be hired for an indefinite period after 36 months or four employment contracts. "The team has not given any grounds for his dismissal in 2008. For this reason we will file a suit in Breda that Thorwald must be included in all activities of the Rabo-Team in 2008," he told De Telegraaf.
Interim team manager Henri van der Aat said that the team would contest the case. "On moral grounds alone I find that Veneberg can't do this," he said. "It is possible that a lot of cyclists could suffer because of his action. In cycling we always work with yearly contracts. In contrast to football, we have no separate collective labour agreement. If Veneberg wins this matter, then managing a team will be impossible. It would mean that you have to keep everyone on until they are old enough to retire."
it really pisses me off when people try to circumvent contracts/transfers in sports using non-sports-specific laws. sports have specific laws for a reason. they have to be different otherwise the whole thing would go to hell with the best 2/3 teams in each sport having every single top rider in that sport.

Count me in...sport is rough busines with he is own laws. Ofcorse when I think how some fat team owner will take he's profit for sportsman 15 year hard wwork..then it makes me angry..but athlete himself also get he's money...he has choosed that way of life..and should be proud that he has with something so good..and most of all enjoy that (Bret Favre cant stop playing..because he like's to play)..most of the cyclist after retirement cant stop training because they like riding. Foe example Kirsipuu after retirement still have training camps in Spain..France and probably but at least part he's own money into...he just still like riding and training.
Sportsmen who like's to play in non-sport laws is discusting. Sry. for US forum members but Landis court case is exatly american way handling things..you can sue for clear enough case. |
