Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (1.HC) 198.3 kms, 10 cobbled sections The time has come for the first chapter of the traditional double header the Belgian opening weekend consists of. For several of our riders this will be a first acquaintance with the cobblestones in an actual race. For your informaton our main guy for today's race is Ednaldo Luiz Cortes. At the first cobbled section, De Haaghoek, a breakaway had taken off definitely. The escapees of today were local boy Glenn Rotty, Latvia's former champion Gatis Smukulis, our Federico Zurlo, former winner of Tour Down Under Tom Slagter and Germany's rider Nico Denz. At that very point these five riders had the gap at six and a half minutes. Denz tested the others at the Taaienberg, the second cobbled climb of the race. The five remained together though as their gap had shrinked down to 3 minutes with 60 kms left in the race. It really didn't seem like anyone had enough to challenge the others truly, let alone shake them. Pretty much nothing happened in the bunch and the escapees only lost one minute in the next 30 kilometers. Still, the five rider group went on intact, now crossing Haaghoek for a third and final time in today's race. The ship stranded at De Lange Munte, the longest cobbled sector of the race. British champion Geraint Thomas accelerated while Cortes tried to counter. He almost bridged but he did not manage to close the gap. Now inside the final 10 kms, Cortes kept trying. Unsuccessfully. He was forced to chase on his own and had burned too much energy before he realised waiting for a third group would've been the slightly better idea.
Thomas's team mate Peter Sagan was the only one who succeeded in joining him, and it seemed like the two of them would decide the race by means of a sprint à deux. It looked like Tinkoff had a win bagged... But they both gave all chances away in the final hectometres, as Lotto-Soudal's Jasper Stuyven strongly came from behind to snatch it away, in front of Arnaud Démare. After a strong but somewhat overconfident performance, 19-year-old Brazilian Ednaldo Luiz Cortes concluded a very instructive first cobbled classic outside the top 10, in twelfth place. Considering his age and his few experience on cobbles, this should be seen as a good result

Knowing that several of riders have come and go since the beginning of the story, I'm starting to realise it may be a good idea to tell something more about our main riders. Revealing some more intel (such as their age and key stats) on them might result into you followers getting more easily what result is to be recognized a decent one and what one is not.

A lot of potential in our team indeed but keeping them will be the biggest challenge. Some of these guys have an expiring contract this year

GP di Lugano (1.HC) 184.9 kms Just like every year, the riders face a ride through the hilly area around Lago di Lugano. There are three consecutive bumps in 5 out of 6 local laps, with the finish line painted close to the lake after the last descent. Four riders composed the break of the day: Sebastian Henao, Jeffrey Romero, Thomas Vaubourzeix and Frederico Figueiredo. Maybe not the big names but the latter did come 2nd in last year's Tour of Austria. The four survived until there were three climbs left. Henao had tried to attack the others but a strong IAM team pulled him back, doing a good job for their Dutch team leader Marc Goos. At the 3rd to last climb, no attacks occured. Hopefully we were in for serious racing at the last two. Diego Ochoa came to the front and the penultimate bump, and only a few guys of our team and Louis Meintjes could keep up with him. And over the top, Ochoa decided to play an attacking card and accelerated. A 100% Dimension Data duo, Alexis Vuillermoz and fellow Frenchman Renaud Bailly, caught up with him at the final climb, and a now raging pack led by Lotto - Soudal was sitting not that far behind them either... Vuillermoz was the next attacker and he managed to build a nice gap in the descent, chased by five other riders. Both Ochoa and Edoardo Zardini were in that group at that point. Ochoa seemed cooked thus as of then, all our hope was on Zardini, who had come back strongly... But Dimension Data's Frenchman held on to the win while former race winner Edoardo Zardini came home in second place. Not a bad race at all with five riders in the first 14, but again the main prize escaped. 1 | | Alexis Vuillermoz | Team Dimension Data | 4h34'31" | 2 | | Edoardo Zardini | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 3 | | Marc Goos | IAM Cycling | s.t. | 4 | | Jordi Simón | Team Katusha | s.t. | 5 | | Jan Hirt | Etixx - Quick-step | s.t. | 6 | | Diego Ochoa | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 7 | | Loïc Vliegen | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 8 | | Daniel Martin | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 9 | | Sam Oomen | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 10 | | José Gonçalves | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. |

Strade Bianche (1.HC) 176.5 kms It is time for the Strade Bianche gravel roads in the appealing and hilly region of Tuscany. As it does every year, this race counts as a good or final test before World Tour racing of Paris - Nice or Tirreno - Adriatico. Already inside the final 100 kms, 3 riders had a gap fluctuating around 4'30". They were last year's winner Ruben Guerreiro, Brendan Canty and Guillaume Thevenot, who'd stay together up to the point where... Thevenot left the other two behind. At that very moment their, or his, gap had been decreased radically. And the Frenchman didn't last long on his own. Soon several attacks started to occur left, right and center. Our team complety missed several ones, including the most dangerous attack by Astana's Andrea Manfredi. Only Movistar's Carlos Betancur managed to catch up after a long chase and together they managed to preserve a gap that would never get any larger than about one minute. The duo had already entered the Citta Vecchia through the ancient city gate when Italy's champion Allessio Bottura and Alexis Vuillermoz started to get closer. Meanwhile Sam Vandenborre was vainly trying to bring a 3rd group, which included Ion Izagirre, closer to those 2 guys. In the final hectometres, Betancur proved he still has that acceleration when riding uphill, a thing he once was so renowned for. Just over half a minute later, Vuillermoz prevented a 66% Italian podium while Ion Izagirre had to settle for fifth place, having pulled off a nice comeback.
