Auber 93 - BigMat | Season 2009
rjc_43
The story will take a quick 5-6 day pause as i do some real life stage racing. 5 days in hilly wales. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has read this story and commented, as often that's what has kept me plugging away, even when i wasn't even getting top 100 placings. (cheers p3druh for all the "positive" comments Wink )

I hope you all (who read it) still get as much enjoyment from it, as i do writing it.

Cheers. B)

Stage 8 will see us actually go for the break 100%. Sobal would be the man for the job, as he's hard as nails on the flat, and good on the climbs. We got to wear the Mountains jersey today due to Brouzes being second overall in that competition. Sobal manages to get in the break up the road, and is joined by 9 others.

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage8BrouzesWearsKoM.png

The break looked like it would stay away, and it would eventually, but unfortunately Sobal didn't have enough to stay on the right side of the split up the final hill. As a result he would have to sprint for 6th place, but would end up running out of legs, and being overtaken by the bunch.

The 5 remaining breakaway riders fought it out, and Ciolek couldn't manage to get any points today.

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya

A race we really have no need to be in, other than for experience. As such the squad consists of Levarlet with 8 race days, and a fitness of 55. Morizot, Pervis, Tronet, Champion, Minard, Galland and Chainel make up the rest of the squad. A search for a stage win might be suitable, but we'll have to see.

The first stage is a TTT, the first one i'll have ever raced...

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/VoltaCiclistaStage1.png

Lets not lose too much time!

Liquigas set a quick time for the first half of the squad, before Discovery come and mash their time into nothingness.

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/VoltaCiclistaStage1LiquigasStonker.png

Auber don't come last! But Levarlet trails the 4 remaining time trialists in for the 5th, and scoring, place.

Stage 9

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage9.png

A hilly stage which looks perfect in which to steal the King of the Mountains.

Brouzes does get in the break, and takes the first climb to draw level with the current leader. He takes 3rd over the second climb as well.

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage9BrouzesTakesKoM.png

He takes the honour of leading over the final climb as well, but the pack is just on his tail, as well as having had Rodriguez join him up front.

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage9BrouzesOverHighPoint.png

They don't stay out much longer!

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage9BreakGunnaBeCaught.png

And as they hit the final 12km, its obvious to see that this isn't a real hilly stage, but in fact a flat one. The sprint trains start up after a few attacks. Many riders get caught out as Duque gets off the front.

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage9StrongDuque.png

He'll stay away to take a great win, but who's that just coming around the corner behind him?

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage9DuqueWins.png

Belkov! A great finish by him sees that the group he's in gains a split gap between them and the rest of the peloton. Unfortunately they wouldn't stand after the end of the stage. Belkov is the only team member to finish in the bunch.

Stage two of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya

A hilly stage, which is a pity really seeing as we have no hilly riders. Or anyone in form.

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/VoltaCiclistaStage2.png

Tronet gets in the break, but that will get caught pre-massive climb.

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/VoltaCiclistaStage2BreakWillbeCaugh.png

Not much else to report, other than a clearly fired up Contador takes off, to pretty much seal the overall on day 2.

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/giro-logo-5.jpg

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage10.png

A slightly misleading profile as the course is shorter than it says at the finish line. Still, with only 2 bottles given, it could be interesting.

Brouzes goes again in the break! What a guy!

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage10BrouzesAwayAgain.png

After the second climb of the day, (Brouzes takes 1st and 2nd), a few minor favourites attacked, Rodriguez got across to the lead group with Brouzes in on the 3rd climb. He also attacked at the top to take full points, with Brouzes taking second behind him.

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage10BreakSplits.png

Brouzes was going to run out of energy not long after this, so just sits on, and gets towed down to the bottom of the valley.

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage10BrouzesDies.png

Soon enough all the breakaway riders get swallowed up in the quickly diminishing pack, and as soon as the pack hits the final climb all the favourites attack. All but one. Di Gregorio doesn't.

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage10GoodAttacks.png

Belkov with his +5 form attacks too. Gets away with a group of 3, trailing Iglinski by 30 seconds before Joly (FDJ) brings them back for Gregorio. Who then attacks for KoM points only. Pointless and a half.

All 3 riders who got away (Di Luca, Simoni and Iglinski) join up soon after this picture:

i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/Cleavers/GiroStage10Only3GetAway.png

They would stay away by a minute (which was decreased by the pack amazingly), and Iglinski further increases his lead.

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya

Levarlet, because he doesn't stand a chance in hell of getting into any scoring position, goes on the attack today. Maybe he can pick up some KoM points to please the sponsors anyway. Plus, being in a break always helps improve fitness!

He runs out of energy within half way to the finish, but still manages to score some more KoM points.

Still, not a chance, and Rasmussen back from injecting himself with other substances wins from Contador.
