Something the Belgian commentators said during the race to each other:
"How many times has a Belgian Won P-R?"
"55"
"And what number does Sep has on his back?"
"Well spotted."
Sep's number was 56
Honestly I sometimes feel blessed being able to choose from three different channels/networks to watch cycling in the Netherlands. We have them broadcast on the Dutch national TV, on Eurosport with Dutch commentators, and on the Belgian TV which I prefer.

Not to rain on your parade, but I watched the portuguese feed and then re-watched the british eurosport feed. They all said that. It's part of the notes any channel gives commentators before the race

Well, the pre-race notes couldn't have possibly predicted a finale between Fabian and Sep right? Maybe they were given the number of Belgian victories, as well as of course the startlist + numbers, but the fact that these two things matched in Sep's case must have been noticed by the commentators themself.

And from what you say, neither did the commentators

Nah, there are guys whose entire job is specifically to research those things, so that the commentators will have in their notes
As for coming up with Vanmarcke pre-race, he was one of the top contenders, and a belgian, in a belgian TV channel

I am pretty sure that in Czech TV, the commentator does almost the whole job. There is only one man in whole sports department, who knows something about cycling apparently.
Still he has half of die-hard fan knowledge. At least i can do my own commentary for TdF (thta is only race broadcasted live here, because of recent Kreuziger showings).
Sometimes i regret i did not choose to study journalism.
At least he has some retired professionals as co-commentators, like Svorada, Andrle, Hruska...
