Sorry for the delay. Will once again be busy this weekend, but next week there will definitely be a new report.

Don't forget about the Tre Valli Varesine, which has a very nice preview on the previous page.

Once again welcome to Italy, this time for stage 2 of the 2013 Tour de Pologne. After yesterday's 'easy' mountain stage we have an extremely tough stage planned for today. At an altitude of over 2200 meters the finish line has been placed at the Passo Pordoi. The weather in the valley is quite good today, but in the Alps it can change at any time.

Race report

Once again we have a very early attack. Ospina (Colombia), Cerny (CCC) and Machado (Radioshack) are the first attackers of the day.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1897.jpg

A bit later Durasek (Lampre) attacks as well.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1898.jpg

Lutsenko (Astana) also decides to leave the pack behind and go on the attack.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1899.jpg

More riders try to attack, but Edmondson (Sky) doesn't want to let them go.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1900.jpg

The 2 front groups have merged. The high pace in the pack causes the 5 riders to accelerate as well. Cerny and Lutsenko are the first victims.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1901.jpg

Cerny and Lutsenko are picked up by the pack, which immediately slows down.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1902.jpg

2 new riders attack, and surprisingly they do get some space. Moser (Cannondale) and Albasini (Orica) are trying to catch up with the three leaders.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1903.jpg

When the 2 groups merge the gap already is 3m30. However, with Moser and Machado being the closest in the GC (+9m51) there's no real danger coming out of this break.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1904.jpg

With 142km to go and a lead of 8m for the break the pack finally decides to make some pace and ride. BMC is the first to do this, sending Blythe and Hushovd.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1905.jpg

Durasek crosses the line of the intermediate sprint first, ahead of Albasini and Machado.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1906.jpg

When BMC lets go of the front, other teams step in to decrease the gap of 8m22. Radioshack, AG2R, Saxo and Cannondale lead the pack.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1907.jpg

At the foot of the Passo di Pampeago (70km from the line) the break has 6m12 left.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1908.jpg

Of all teams in the pack it's Orica, without real GC-rider and with someone in the break, that's mainly responsible for this decrease of the lead.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1909.jpg

At the steepest part of the climb Sky takes over the lead though, with Cataldo setting a high pace.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1910.jpg

At the top of the climb Durasek comes first. Moser 2nd.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1911.jpg

Just before the top Geniez (FDJ) attacks from the pack. He reaches the top 2 minutes after the break and 15 seconds before the sharply reduced pack.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1912.jpg

However, Sky sets a high pace in the downhill as well, causing Geniez to be reeled in again.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1913.jpg

At the Passo Costalunga Sky starts slowly. However, the damage in the pack has already been done. 54 riders are present.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1914.jpg

The pace in the break is high though, with Ospina being dropped as the first.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1915.jpg

The slow pace in the back does allow some attacks though. Johnson (Champion System) and Poels (Vacansoleil) decide to leave the pack for what it is and attack.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1916.jpg

A little later they are reached by Geniez (FDJ) and Clarke (Orica).
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1917.jpg

Meanwhile in front Machado's high pace has caused Durasek to drop.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1918.jpg

Machado wins the mountain sprint as well, meaning he takes over the provisional lead.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1919.jpg

4th is Poels, crossing the top before Clarke. They have already succesfully dropped Durasek, Geniez and Ospina.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1920.jpg

In the downhill we get some more attacks. First Owniak (BMC) attacks, but more importantly we see Urán and Majka countering him. Durasek meanwhile is dropping back further, to almost be reeled in.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1921.jpg

Clarke meanwhile has dropped Poels and caught the leaders. Albasini gives it all for his teammate, causing trouble to Machado and Moser.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1922.jpg

It was only a matter of time, but Majka and Urán have been pulled back as well.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1923.jpg

At the flat section towards the final climb Owniak and Johnson are caught.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1924.jpg

13km from the line, at the start of the Passo Pordoi we have the following situation:
Albasini, Clarke, Machado, Moser
+41 Poels
+53 Pack
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1925.jpg

Early on we get a mass attack immediately, which is a massive contrast with yesterday. Poels becomes the victim of this.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1926.jpg

Costa, Martin, Urán, Mollema, Rolland and Rolland form a small group of 6.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1927.jpg

With 10km to go they catch Machado, Albasini and Moser. Clarke is just ahead.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1928.jpg

The chase in the pack also causes victims, but none of the riders dropped played a role in the GC.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1929.jpg

8km from the line Clarke is also caught. Kwiatkowski and Martin start to get trouble following now.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1930.jpg

With 5km to go Rolland attacks, only Urán can follow. In the second group we find Mollema, Costa and Martin. Kwiatkowski and Clarke have already been dropped.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1931.jpg

Meanwhile in the pack Kim, Basso, Schleck and some elements of the Sky train have been dropped.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1932.jpg

The 'pack' itself meanwhile is chasing hopelessly, trying to limit the damage. The group of 11 passes the 5km sign 49 seconds after Rolland.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1933.jpg

With 3km to go Rolland and Urán are still together.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1934.jpg

26 seconds behind we find Mollema, Martin and Costa.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1935.jpg

17 more seconds behind is Kwiatkowski.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1936.jpg

He is followed very closely by the 'pack'.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1937.jpg

And gets caught as well. He drops back to the end of the group.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1938.jpg

Meanwhile in front Rolland and Urán reach the banner of the final kilometer. They start their final sprints.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1939.jpg

38 seconds later the second group does the same.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1940.jpg

A bit to the back we find Duarte, Van den Broeck, De Vries, Kiserlovski and Talansky having dropped Majka, Kwiatkowski, Ghita, De las Campos, Bardet and Danielson.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1941.jpg

In front Urán places a strong acceleration to pass Rolland.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1942.jpg

At the line
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1943.jpg
Urán can raise his arms for the second day in a row, beating Rolland to the line.

400m back we find the second and third group merging.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1944.jpg

At the line, 50 seconds behind Urán, we find Mollema hanging on for the bonification seconds. Van den Broeck comes 4th, Costa 5th, Martin 6th, De Vries 7th, Duarte 8th, 9th Kiserlovski and Talansky completing the top-10.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1945.jpg

More than a minute after Urán Majka comes 11th, just beating Kwiatkowski. Ghita comes 12th.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM1946.jpg

Kim Po-Ding comes over the line as 17th, 2m04 behind Urán.

Also, I've got a trick for easily sorting the -25 and team classification on general time. In case you want to remove the stage results, copy your general time table to the player column, if you don't want it copy it to time. Then, at the place of the most right location of the general time (so player column if with stage time, general column if not), change the content to the number in the GC. Then you copy 1-25 (in case of 25 youngsters or teams) to somewhere beneath the table. Then sort your column with just 1 number (1-25 for example) ascending, and copy the 1-25 back to where it was.

Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

That's right forgot he is so bad. Grin
At least Gusev could have showed something though.
But then it's time for the hills I hope for better results there. A successful break with some Katusha rider would be great. Wink

Very, very detailed report. That was a pleasure to read Wink

I'm impressed by Johnson trying and by De Vries finishing in that group. However, we need to imporove for that Top3 goal..

Yes, Damian, attack on the descent before the hard final climb. Always works.

It is his debut so I shall permit this tactical suicide this time. Pfft

Great report. If you're struggling for time you could always just write less. Unless you're a perfectionist of course. Wink

Well, thursday is the only day per week I have some time. In fact, even the only one I have more than one hour per day. Better spend that time efficiently. I am perfectionist and I do enjoy writing these reports. With a bit of luck I do have some more time on the weekends, especially on saturdays starting next week.

as of 23 september, he told me that he currently has lost a his motivation for the story games, at least for the moment and then he started singing In The End (he seriously added the lyrics  )

he constantly fucked up saying that he was the only guy managing Europcar. I was always left out at everything Sad

Good to see Moser in the break. Too bad Basso is just crap.

A Top 5 GC in Burgos is possible but will be difficult.
Pellizotti will have to perform a miracle to win Varesine and get our hard goal.

Race:

196km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0001_zps54222245.jpg
Welcome at the, quite unusual but still beautiful starting locating in Bissone. It is still dry now, but the weather forecast is not in the benefit of the riders. A lot of rain is expected, but let's hope we can see an entertaining race nevertheless.

192km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0002_zps05e166e0.jpg
We barely took off when Bandiera (IAM) placed his attack. The break might stand a good shot against the favourites if a break with many riders can co-operate well. The Italian alone will not do it.

182km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0003_zpse7d896fb.jpg
Luckily, he got some compagnions and a 2:30 lead. De Negri (VIN), Ferrari (CJR), Kern (EUC), Van Staeyen (TSV) and Bandiera will form today's breakaway. If we will see a winner from these 5, strange things must happen in the peleton.

172km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0004_zps195627d0.jpg
Unlucky Aberasturi (EUS) suffered a puncture. Meanwhile, the rain is starting to come down. But a quick look at the forecast shows us more, and heavier rain to come. Possibly even a thunderstorm. Poor riders...

166km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0005_zps95ec2dc1.jpg
Thurau (EUC) is the next victim of a poor tyre. The break has now gained an advantage of 3 minutes, and lighting has been spotted in the region.

140km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0006_zps8696109a.jpg
The peleton keeps the break within 3, 3 and a half minutes. Androni, Euskaltel and Sky dictate the pace in the peleton, but nevertheless both Aberasturi and Thurau managed to return on their own.

123km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0007_zpsbd53e985.jpg
Before we reach the local laps around Varese, the riders must first conquer a few hills. This one caused a lot of riders to drop from the peleton, including the entire Novo Nordisk-team. If you bet €1 on one of their riders to win, you'll be a millionair at the end of the day. But they will have to do the impossible, winning a race.

113km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0008_zps74bb0ca3.jpg
The gap reached 3 minutes and 45 seconds, a signal for Rubiano (AND) to attack out of the peleton. Everyone who got dropped managed to return, but Clancy and Verschoor from Novo Nordisk. They will engage in the battle for 109th place and the honour of not being the worst Novo rider.

109km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0009_zps9f5ec9fb.jpg
Another puncture. This time it's Calabria from the ill-fated Novo Nordisk team. Clancy and Verschoor are getting some competition now...

93km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0010_zps03f6f2e1.jpg
Rubiano bridge the gap to the break, which now holds a firm 5 minute lead over the peleton. The work at the halfway mark is done by Belkin, Cannondale and Sky.

88km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0011_zps02623663.jpg
Another hill, and the break has broken into pieces. Bandiera is completely lost, while De Negri and Van Staeyen are in big trouble. Not a good sign for them, since we haven't reached the local laps yet.

70km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0012_zps9ce5f566.jpg
Chiarini (AND) had a nasty crash, but luckily the car and motorbike avoided him. He's back on his bike, but will struggle to get back to the peleton. The break's maximum lead increased to 6 minutes, with Bandiera 1 minute behind the rest. There may be a chance they'll make it to the end.

61km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0013_zps0edc911b.jpg
And another crash. Feng (CSS) forgot the road was very slippery due to the rain, and has hit the ground. Maybe the impact made him realise it's raining, and he should pay a bit more attention to it. Anyhow, the riders have reached the local laps around Varese, which will be taken 7 times.

50km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0014_zpscd37ad11.jpg
Van Stayen is the next victim of his worse enemy, a hill. The peleton has gained a bit of time, but is still 4 minutes behind. The initiator of the break, Bandiera is still riding somewhere in between the groups on his own, without a camera. I bet he's thinking why he initiated the break in the first place.

39km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0015_zpsdcbe9aa9.jpg
One lap later, De Negri can't follow the pace as well, and Kern looks like that will be his faith soon. Which leaves Ferrari and Rubiano at the front. They are still 3 and a half minute ahead of the peleton, which has already caught and left behind Bandiera.

34km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0016_zps033bcb36.jpg
Ferrari can't follow Rubiano, meaning it will be the Colombian versus the peleton. He has already lapped the two lonely Novo's (Clancy and Verschoor)

24km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0017_zps5395455d.jpg
3 minutes left for Rubiano. Meanwhile, the peleton has realised something should be done. And the first one to attack is......his team-mate Pellizotti. Great tactics, Androni, the gap dropped to 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

20km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0018_zpse4e5e99f.jpg
Pellizotti is caught again by the other favourites. Stupid move, but Rubiano is still ahead. De Negri and Kern are already caught.

17km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0019_zps2554f81d.jpg
If you thought Novo Nordisk has had a bad day, it has just gotten worse. De Mesmaeker has crashed and was hit by a car. Somehow, he managed to get back on his bike and finished the race, What a spirit!

15km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0020_zps1298f3a3.jpg
Can you spot Rubiano in this group? He has caught up with the bus. The gap hasn't decreased in the last kilometers, it's looking more and more likely he'll make it till the end. Ferrari has already been caught.

13km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tre%20Valli%20Varesine/PCM0021_zpsf5006ba8.jpg
The peleton hasn't comletely given up though, although it's likely this will be the battle for second place. Chilean champion with a Chinese jersey [Apologies] Cristobal Riquelme (BEL) and Uran (SKY) are attempting to ride away.

They were briefly ahead of the rest, but the other favourites reeled them in again. Rubiano has overtaken another group of anonymous riders, and still holds a 2 minute-lead, meaning he can lose 20 seconds every kilometer. That's unlikely to happen.

3 kilometers to go. Uran gives it another go, he is followed by Sagan (CAN), Pellizotti and Riblon (ALM). Down the road, Montaguti (ALM) crashed and Delfosse (CRE) punctured. Both were already dropped from the main group.

Cristobal Riquelme and Voeckler (EUC) joined the previously named riders for a showdown to the line...

For the second place, since Rubiano is not caught. He holds a lead of 1 minute and 20 seconds over the rest. He does not celebrate immediately, but we can spot a tear. Or is it a misplaced raindrop?

Uran and Sagan battle for second, but the sprint was marred by lapped riders who blocked both of them. In the end, the Colombian was less blocked and thus secured second place.

The Chinese, oops Chilean Cristobal Riquelme finishes just outside the podium, just ahead of Voeckler and Riblon.

Sithembile (SKY) finishes in seventh place after helping his team-mate secure second place. Pellizotti is the second Androni rider in the top-10 in eight. Nocentini (ALM) and Anton (EUS) complete the top-10 after riding an anonymous race.

26 minutes and 31 seconds behind Rubiano, Clancy finishes in 109th place, ahead of Verschoor, 2 minutes behind De Mesmaeker. Brown (BEL) disturbs Novo's operation 'Last 5' by finishing in 107th, ahead of Novo's Peron and Calabria. Megias decided to ignore teamorders and finished in 77th place. He is now fearing for his job...
