Gora Euskadi! | Vuelta Summary
duxili
Well for sure the start list is more impressive than in my last game Wink

Not a bad start for Samu who was present all day long and finished not that far from the front Pfft

@Atlantius: Thanks. Yup, it's rather typical that the competition starts out strong and than fades in the second week or so. Still, we can't count on that and well, even if guys like Froome or Valverde fade... they are still world-class riders. Frown

@24sebaf1: Hehe, indeed Gora Mikel! Grin

@The Rider: Thanks. Of course you can join just as a Socio and don't have to become a Protégé to any rider. There's no need for that. Also, I was thinking about "overpowering" too, but I think by limiting it to one point for one rider I could prevent it. Additionately, I set a limit at which riders couldn't get a boost (like increasing +1 MT for Samu, Mikel and Igor - I wouldn't have liked that either). So now the upgrades are a nice bonus, but it's not something that will make my experience in any way much easier. Wink

@duxili: Vuelta startlists have a tendency to be either really great or just really, really, utterly lame. Samu is always present and aware. Thankfully he will ride in this story next year for us (still thankful to BMC of course IRL). Wink

Two top 10s are nice, especially something as unexpected as in the TTT. Smile

I finally made my choice as socio for Lobato: +1 ACC Smile

@Dippofix: Quick-Sim makes it possible. Wink

@Ian Butler: Alright, noted. I'll apply it - like all upgrades - at the end of the season.

Vattenfall Cyclassics, August 2013

Another stop of the Izagirre brothers as well as for our two germans. With many top sprinters missing, the german race in Hamburg might offer us a shot for some cheap World Tour points. Favourites include Tom Boonen (OPQ), french-men Demare and Bouhanni (FDJ), Benoit Coquard (EUC) and Tyler Farrar (GRS). Surprisingly Greipel, Kittel and Degenkolb have chosen (alongside Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish) the Vuelta this year, thus not participating in the Vattenfall Cyclassics. And yes, in case you are wondering, this is the most boring race for Euskaltel – Euskadi.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/stages%202013/eus_0102_zps3f876a9b.jpg

Flat, flat, some hills, flat, flat, some hills, flat, flat, some hills…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_43_39-Greenshot_zpsc3f8a8ac.jpg

Herrada, Christensen, Van Emden and Wurf form the early breakaway. Quickly they gain on the peloton. Maybe the lack of top sprinters might give us a surprise today?

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_47_41-Greenshot_zps1db4b8cf.jpg

20 kilometers ahead of the finish, the gap is merely a minute. The sprinters make them ready for the finale. At least we get to see some action on the last 10 kilometers.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_49_39-Greenshot_zps44781fe6.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_50_30-Greenshot_zpsea39a35a.jpg

Flecha, Navardauskas, Voigt and Gaudin attack from the peloton. The break still has some gap left but are soon caught by a very strong Voigt. Sure, when Greipel & Co. are missing, Jens Voigt has just more room and tv-time to attack.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_51_41-Greenshot_zpsf00675f8.jpg

Tell you what? Ion Izagirre attacks now too seeing as the peloton doesn’t really provide much right now. Weirdly Vacansoleil works for the peloton, although Flecha…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_52_52-Greenshot_zps9bdaf019.jpg

… Flecha has a pretty big lead. And he heads into the last kilometer and it’s certain nobody will take this win from him… and Boonen…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_53_31-Greenshot_zps6e244b78.jpg

Boonen practically gave away the win…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_54_56-Greenshot_zpsa48510aa.jpg

… but Flecha can’t believe it and doesn’t even celebrate. No time, no power or just not caring? Yeah, too cool this guy. Ion Izagirre gets caught on the last meters and gets 9th. Hm, probably should have went with Flecha, Voigt & Co. but whatever… Not even winner J.A. Flecha seemed to care for this race apparently.

A surprising race. Flecha is numb to this great victory Pfft

Ion with a top 10 which is better than Euskaltel could hope for Smile

A nice top ten for Izagirre Smile

Really happy for Flecha: so consistent in spring classics that he do deserve this win

And a nice race for Euskatel too Wink

@Ian Butler: Agreed aaaand agreed. Wink

@sutty68: Certainly is. But meh, nobody really cared about the race to begin with apparently.

@duxili: Haha, yeah - it's true. Only thing, he was consistenly bad at the classics. GrinStill it's a good win for Vacansoleil, especially since they are in danger of getting relegated.

Vuelta a Espana, August 2013

Stage 3
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/stages%202013/eus_0103_zps6b7300a4.jpg
170 kilometers and one steep climb at the end. Typical Vuelta stage I'd say.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_03_27-Greenshot_zps8bad3c70.jpg

A rainy day sees an early attempt by Egoi Mart#inez who relatively easy breaks away alongside 3 other riders. Up on the bridge we can see another 6 riders trying to join them.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_07_48-Greenshot_zpse50197af.jpg

When the weather gets better and Meyer and Trofimov join the break, they easily gain time on the peloton. With about 6 minutes, things look good for Martínez, Leezer, Veelers and Veilleux & Co. Since none of them present any danger to Gilbert or the favourites, they might have shot for an early stage win. Then again, Cannondale is hard at work and clearly they know, that this Is a perfect stage for Peter Sagan, who lost due to yesterday’s stage the lead in the UCI World Tour ranking. A couple of points here today and he may lead again – for a while at least.

Spoiler
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_12_29-Greenshot_zps668de28b.jpg

While some guys sprint at the intermediate, the other 3 just ride their own pace. With still 30 kilometers to go, the riders have to watch after their energy.

Spoiler
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_15_45-Greenshot_zps19578d49.jpg

10 kilometers to go and still over 2 minutes lead. Although Martínez wants to participate in the breakaway’s lead, the others are just too much roulers and he can consider himself lucky that he doesn’t get dropped. But therefor, the final climb may suit him more than the others. Watch out for Trofimov though I suppose. Only when the guys take out a bit, Martínez time comes to lead and he is eager to make it hard for the other guys already.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_19_03-Greenshot_zps30087125.jpg

With about 2 minutes going into the final climb, chances are good for Martínez. Although in relay, Martínez gets quite some unintentional gap on his companions. Well, now the fight for the stage win is up…

Spoiler
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_20_46-Greenshot_zps1b42233e.jpg

White jersey Sagan attacks out of the peloton and the orange crowd, while Martínez struggles to drop his fellow riders for good.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_21_33-Greenshot_zpsb8baf447.jpg

Thus Martínez attacks with 1.5 kilometers left to go. Meanwhile attacks from the peloton by Moreno, Froome, Henao, Betancur & Piedra heat up the tension in the peloton.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_23_37-Greenshot_zps8327a59c.jpg

Trofimov & Meyer are the only ones who can catch up to Martínez. And the Russian rider takes the stage win for Katusha. Egoi Martínez comes in third. In the back though, we can already spot white jersey Peter Sagan.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_25_30-Greenshot_zpsde45622f.jpg

Valverde catches up to Group Henao just in time. Froome is a bit further back, Nieve might lose some time too but not too much. Due to the fact that Gilbert loses time too, Henao takes over the leader’s jersey.

Stage 4
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/stages%202013/eus_0104_zpsd4076927.jpg
Quite a tricky stage with so many bumpy hills and dangerous descents. The roads will be presumably also quite narrow at times thus making it easy for the peloton to be split up. You will have to be aware of the race to not lose any time in the finale.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_48_11-Greenshot_zps0fcbbf0e.jpg

Several crashes in the beginning make on this narrow, curvy roads, combined with the heavy rain, life for the riders dangerous. Weirdly enough, even in the breakaway the riders aren’t secure. Jorge Azanza is still upfront (hidden behind the camera), while Silin and Parisien dropped back into the peloton due to their misfortunate accidents. A second attack eventually brings Azanza forward to the front of the race.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_50_10-Greenshot_zps392c56bc.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_53_36-Greenshot_zpsbe1dea21.jpg

Today’s route leaves no moment to rest. It’s up and down and up again. And all in the cold rain. While Spaniards seem have found a new love for Peter Sagan, Azanza’s group has become even bigger. Quite some formidable opponents are in the group with riders such as Velits (OPQ), Tiralongo (AST), Belkov (KAT), Damiano Caruso (CAN), Rujano (VCD), Geniez (FDJ), Morabito (BMC) and Howes (GRS) at the end. About 35 riders are already dropped meanwhile further back and surely more will follow.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1202_57_00-Greenshot_zps6e91a4f7.jpg

The only protection the riders find from the heavy rider is in the tunnels.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_00_42-Greenshot_zps4fbd2068.jpg

Of course, the weather can’t be a dick all the time, and it eventually stops to rain. The break has about 4 minutes to the peloton, 72 kilometers left. After this hilly route, the riders have to face the Alto del Mirador de Ézaro. Not an easy challenge, although it appears like one on the profile display – but with over 10 % gradient nearly all the climb up, it’s sure to play an factor for the stage win already.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_04_37-Greenshot_zps7df9f024.jpg

You can spot the paths of pain already from down there. This is going to steep, but Azanza looks calm so far, while the peloton comes closer and is only 3 minutes behind.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_05_59-Greenshot_zps728f9ed2.jpg

Not surprisingly some riders see this as an opportunity to attack and maybe get the stage win. Morabito is the first to launch his. After some thinking, Azanza reacts to Velits counter-attack.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_07_15-Greenshot_zpsb141851a.jpg

Geniez stays back with Howes and Belkov. Is this the smarter decision? To save the energy for the finale, but what if they don’t manage to come back. The gap is quite significant already.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_08_24-Greenshot_zps8cb8d818.jpg

The peloton climbs a little later the climb without too much hassle. Movistar takes over charge from Team SKY and pace for their leader Valverde.

Spoiler
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_10_14-Greenshot_zpsedf08ed2.jpg

Howes is the only one to not have gotten back into the breakaway upfront in the descent. The final 20 kilometers are up and they are gonna be a bumpy ride.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_11_55-Greenshot_zps793c90bc.jpg

10 kilometers from the finish, Sagan and Betancur try to take advantage of the steep hill shortly before the finish. But against the entire squad of Movistar they probably won’t stand much chance. Frequent attacks in the breakaway meanwhile don’t make life any easier for Azanza, however none of them gets particularly far yet.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_13_45-Greenshot_zps1726b541.jpg

And just as we thought the day would get easier and spy on Azanza, Valverde, Moreno and Henao intensify the race. We are left without our pants down. Antón, Sánchez and Verdugo have to try everything now to get them back… no one else is willing to do everything. Of course not, they have their guys upfront.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_15_57-Greenshot_zps867121b3.jpg

Saxo rider Hernandez might have made the decisivie move by attacking in the downhill, while everything blew up around us. He has a gap of around 15 seconds to the other guys, the final kilometer is up. About 1’15’’ is the lead of Group Valverde/Henao on the chasing Euskaltel pack far back.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_17_12-Greenshot_zpsd98d9428.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_18_10-Greenshot_zps4027ff2b.jpg

They really rush into this sprint now. Azanza gets away from the wheel of Geniez and tries to push for it. Morabito and Tiralongo on the other side look stronger though. Soon thereafter Hernandez is caught and Morabito and Tiralongo remain to fight it out upfront.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_18_49-Greenshot_zps30fdacd2.jpg

Just by a few centimeters, Tiralongo takes the stagewin ahead of Morabito, Geniez and Azanza. Velits comes fifth.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_20_06-Greenshot_zps51fe5198.jpg

Betancur, Sagan and Valverde get a little gap on Henao and Moreno. Maybe enough for another switch of the leader’s jersey?

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1203_20_57-Greenshot_zps44eb7985.jpg

And how does the peloton lose today, more importantly, how much does our Euskaltel – Euskadi trio lose? Luis Leon Sánchez and Gilbert thankfully decrease it a bit at least by sprinting really up this little climb. And by the way, Euskaltel – Euskadi might have just saved Froome (SKY) the possible Vuelta win…

Roughly one minute is okay for fucking it up so much. We were quick to react eventually and there were worst stages in the Grand Tours this year where we lost everything. Since we are obviously not capable of learning from our past mistakes, we succeeded at least in limiting the damage this time around. Sergio Henao remains with one second ahead of Carlos Betancur.

Thanks guys. It's been some stages with ups and downs so far. A bit more up and a bit less down would be welcome by now.

@Ollfardh: Welcome aboard. Wink

Vuelta a Espana, August 2013

Stage 5
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/stages%202013/eus_0105_zps9c376049.jpg
Despite the climbs from Sober to Lago de Sanabria, we expect a bunch sprint today and since Cavendish, Greipel & Kittel want to that their trip to Spain counts for something, we don’t even think about ruining their party today. After the first four important stages, Euskaltel – Euskadi prefer it for the time to save their powers.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_26_59-Greenshot_zpsada59073.jpg

A group of five riders establishes itself early on, while Hurel from Europcar tries to close the gap to them on his own. His efforts however leave him someone hanging in the space between the front of the race and the peloton. With Zaugg and Rast, two swiss riders are in the break. Also featured are Martens (BEL), Gatto (VIN) and Bole (VCD).

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_29_35-Greenshot_zps93b3f132.jpg

It’s a calm, slightly cold day meanwhile for Euskaltel – Euskadi. However, Katu and I keep our eyes open for any suspicious signs for a possible attack by our opponents.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_33_09-Greenshot_zps5392b315.jpg

With 9 kilometers left, Zaugg and the others are not willing to surrend to Omega Pharma and Lotto – Belisol and make a last brave stand. However, they don’t have much chance against the combined efforts of the strongest sprint teams in the world.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_34_51-Greenshot_zps7d5a8618.jpg

Each team paces for their captains. This is where it counts now and we truly see at least for today a revival of the epic finishes between Cavendish, Greipel & Kittel. Oh, and Matthew Goss is in there too.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_36_19-Greenshot_zpscb40a6a5.jpg

German champion Greipel opens up the sprint for good now after his teammates Dehaeys and Roelandts did some major work for him. Kittel on the far right has quite a gap to close while Cavendish tries to come after the stream of Trentin but Goss might block that route.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_37_42-Greenshot_zps1784e58e.jpg

And Greipel takes home his Vuelta stage win with quite a lead on Goss and Cavendish.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_45_01-Greenshot_zpsae967833.jpg

Okay, okay. I’ll give them that. The view from up here at the start isn’t half-bad. A bit later a group of 5 riders sets itself apart in the downhill, including Albasini, Pichot, Roux, Hermans and Boivin.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_52_10-Greenshot_zps4735a6c7.jpg

Well, woops. Someone must have fallen asleep and forgot to record anything… anyway, I just woke up in time for the finale 5 kilometers. Albasini is the lost one upfront while Omega Pharma, Argos – Shimano and Lotto – Belisol do their stuff.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_53_28-Greenshot_zps20fb1a2f.jpg

For reasons that we have yet to comprehend, Tem Argos – Shimano prefers to use Degenkolb to hunt down the breakaway, while he isn’t participating in the sprint train for Kittel. However, Lotto Belisol have already quite a gap on Omega Pharma’s sprint train so I’d bet my money on Greipel once more.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_54_57-Greenshot_zps6cbc9133.jpg

Merely a kilometer left after this turn and Cavendish comes out of the cover of Matteo Trentin, who did a formidable job. However Kristoff and Greipel still have their nose in front.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_55_44-Greenshot_zps456b6a07.jpg

It’s a real close one as Kristoff (KAT) was the fastest coming out of the turn and just has mere centimeters lead on Greipel while Kittel finishes once more third probably.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1221_56_36-Greenshot_zps7ed73983.jpg

Obviously not much time to celebrate on the finish line for Kristoff so he has to do it after the it, and in a pose reminiscing Hercules, he takes the stage win for Katusha. Great job by the Norwegian, beating the fastest sprinters in the world.

Stage 7
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/stages%202013/eus_0107_zps80ab1d62.jpg
Tomorrow is a tough mountain stage, today though is another flat one. So, yaaay. From Almendralejo to Troyes, we see some climbs but nothing to tough. We might have thought about trying something but oddly all our riders are in the back when the attacks start right at the first hill. Since we are not really motivated to do anything anyway, we just call it a day.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1222_07_04-Greenshot_zps739b1706.jpg

While the guys in the breakaway sprint for the mountain points of the 4.-cat climbs, the spectators of the town are enjoying the sun and the run through their town.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1222_12_54-Greenshot_zpsad65b073.jpg

With still over 30 kilometers left, the peloton slowly increases its day’s work, and the once comfortable lead of about 7 minutes totally surprisingly decreases rather fast.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1222_14_59-Greenshot_zps09e1f830.jpg

Business as usual. The breakaway has no chance, the sprint trains form and we all hope to get an exciting finish to see.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1222_16_04-Greenshot_zpsf856d15c.jpg

Don’t ask me what Nieve is doing on Sagan’s wheel. He reminds me of that one dog… that you know?

This one is between Cavendish and Greipel, their teams are the seemingly only ones who could really create a train this time. Maybe Argos – Shimano are fed up with all these close 2nd and third places? Anyway, while Trentin does a great job pacing, Greipel has already quite some lead on Cavendish.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1222_18_27-Greenshot_zps85fc8ada.jpg

What the hell? When Dehaes can’t really sprint anymore, Greipel just sits on his saddle for quite a while and Trentin-Cavendish duo overtake them in a matter of instant.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1222_19_12-Greenshot_zps2a2b3255.jpg

Woah, Greipel really fucked that one up. Cavendish takes an easy stage win thanks to a superb performance by him and his lead-out Trentin. Australian Cantwell (TST) takes third.
