Stage 6: Hermanus - Old Helshoogte Pass (138,6km)
imageshack.us/a/img593/391/rsa201366.jpg

Today is the stage I was mostly looking for. It`s looking quite tough with a Cat.1 in the middle and a double climb towards the end with the 2nd one being the hill finish. Probably the best stage to get some bigger time gaps and as I was able to get a good GC position so far I hope I will also be able to keep it after this stage.

imageshack.us/a/img13/2041/rsa2013627.jpg

A group of 6 was able to create a small gap. We decided not to join today as Brown`s KoM is pretty much secured and the team decided that all riders will ride for me today.
Most dangerous in this group is young Dutch sprinter Havik as 16. and only +2'02 in the GC. Jelloul, Goos, Chacón, Calcagni and McCook are the other 5 riders looking for a good stage result only.

imageshack.us/a/img685/4857/rsa2013630.jpg

Mainly MTN - Quebeka are controlling the peloton for Janse Van Rensburg. But also Christina Watches is obviously riding for Schumacher today as they have Furlan doing some work as well.

imageshack.us/a/img521/7910/rsa2013632.jpg

With 46km to go the gap is down to 3'50 and it will take quite a high pace to bring them back.
In the meantime Salazar and Scheirlinckx also joined the breakaway making it 8 riders, which doesn`t make it easier at all.
I have good legs and always ride in the front rows today.

imageshack.us/a/img132/5586/rsa2013634.jpg

20km left and with the two remaining climbs the gap is still at 2'57. So they haven`t lost that much actually and might even have a chance today. Just when we weren`t in the break of course.

imageshack.us/a/img254/6964/rsa2013636.jpg

Lammertink, Cheula, Schumacher and Baez are the first favourites with an attack on the first climb. Still 10km left and a 2min gap for the breakaway. And also still 102 riders left. Obviously we won`t see a very big selection today which is a bit disappointing. On the other hand the gap to the breakaway shows that the pace isn`t as fast as expected.

imageshack.us/a/img203/993/rsa2013639.jpg

The attackers around Lammertink and Schumacher are caught and Grabovskiy is increasing the pace. Many riders are struggling now but still keeping contact. 3km left and just 40s for Scheirlinckx in the lead. He is solo now with McCook following a bit behind him and the rest of the breakaway still ahead of the peloton. This will be very close for them as it`s the 3 hard uphill kilometers now.

imageshack.us/a/img507/9498/rsa2013641.jpg

1,5km left and we almost reached the breakaway. Ochoa Quintero and Diaz attack and this time I decide to follow. First one could become a danger for me, while Diaz is 4th in the overall.

imageshack.us/a/img580/1544/rsa2013643.jpg

The attack had no real effect as the next riders are keeping contact to us. But now with the breakaway just ahead it`s a very chaotic sprint for the win.
Scheirlinckx still has a small gap but is really exhausted.

imageshack.us/a/img547/6548/rsa2013645.jpg

It`s not the Belgium even though 2 breakaway riders proved to be strong enough to keep the sprinting puncheurs behind.
Calgagni takes this surprising win ahead of Goos. 3rd is Ochoa Quintero as strongest of the puncheurs today. Behind Chacón, Gabovskiy and breakaway rider Jelloul I finish on a very good 7th today. But as there are no gaps at all and even Brown, Atkins, Leonard and Lawrence are within this group I won`t improve my GC position. But more important for me was to defend the 7th and this was successful.

One stage left. Tomorrow we will ride a final criterium in Paarl, where a sprint can be expected.

Tour of South Africa

Stage 7: Paarl - Paarl (100,5km)
imageshack.us/a/img221/2204/rsa201377.jpg

Last day in South Africa. So far it was a very successful trip and normally this criterium shouldn`t change the GC. But you never know as the crash risk is often quite high here. So all of us need to stay focussed until the finish line.

imageshack.us/a/img843/808/rsa2013749.jpg

Without a sprinter in our squad we decided to attack with Josh Atkins. He is joined by Groen, Diniz, Mizourov, Lagab and Pronk.

imageshack.us/a/img534/2711/rsa2013751.jpg

With 70km to go and a gap of 2min Schipper is also joining making it a group of 7 riders. None of them is really a danger for the GC guys but surely the sprinter teams don`t want to give this away that easy.

imageshack.us/a/img834/977/rsa2013753.jpg

26km to go and the gap is down to 100s. In especially Cameroun for Haedo and Kenda for Damiani are doing the work at the moment.

imageshack.us/a/img547/7317/rsa2013755.jpg

The one thing missing is a stage win here. So Atkins attacks out of the breakaway when realizing that 2-3 riders aren`t working at all.

imageshack.us/a/img266/7492/rsa2013757.jpg

Grabovskiy was one of the most active riders on the recent stages and is just 1min down in the GC as 14th. But crashing that late in a stage normally means losing time. So bad luck for him and his team Gobernacion de Antioquia.

imageshack.us/a/img189/5901/rsa2013759.jpg

Atkins late attack had no success. With 7,7km to go he and the other breakaway riders are caught.
Kenda really took over now and rides with 5 riders for Damiani. Right of him race leader Janse Van Rensburg is trying to find a good position. Behind him I am looking to sprint for a good position as well knowing that there are a few guys within the same time and stage position could become important.

imageshack.us/a/img692/4491/rsa2013761.jpg

Well. Obviously Kenda has other plans as Milne is their last rider in the train with Damiani being his final leadout. Janse Van Rensburg and Haedo are right behind him with myself being next to them not having the perfect position as I ride directly in the wind.
Simpson, Van Poppel, Martinez Ortega and Van Heerden are the next on that train trying to keep contact.

imageshack.us/a/img515/4079/rsa2013766.jpg

But nobody is able to beat Janse Van Rensburg, who takes yet another win next to the GC, points and youth ranking. Awesome race for the South African.
Haedo and the winner of the 5th stage, Berhane finish next. Damiani as 5th could have been better I think when Kenda was riding for him as Milne only finished as 14th.
Van Poppel as 9th definitely lost his form in the second half of this race, while I can be quite happy as 17th. This is about what I can do in a normal sprint and it helped me to keep my 7th GC position which is more than expected.
Brown`s KoM win is a great bonus and shows that we are able to perform on a good level.
Grabovskiy lost more than 5min in the end and falls out of the top40. This is very unlucky for him.

Eastmean very respectable 7th, Brown with the KoM. Great results. But what a domination by Rensburg. Not normal. Pfft

Ryan can be happy with his all round performance in South Africa Smile

And Great for Nathan bringing home the mountains jersey Wink

Thanks all for the comments. It was pretty fun to play even though I had hoped for more selection in general. But this is a PCM12 problem with easier hilly stages.

Training Progressions

As you might have realized there was no progression for Eastman in the first season. Luckily I can announce that he finally started to improve his skills. I haven`t realized a stat boost in South Africa, so I am quite sure it happened afterwards.

img138.imageshack.us/img138/2399/rsa20138aftersouthafric.jpg

The most important progression surely is the hill stat. But he also improved his climbing in general as also some backup stats.

Here a better overview with some training for all riders in comparison to the season start.

imageshack.us/a/img823/2399/rsa20138aftersouthafric.jpg

Next to Eastman most important progressions surely are Avin and Rathe. Other riders got some ncie backup stat progressions.

I hope that the next progression won`t again take 16 months. Wink
But I think it`s nice to see him improving his climbing, which should help him getting more good results like in South Africa in the upcoming races.

Zimnyaya GP

img823.imageshack.us/img823/7214/zimnyayagpprofile.jpg

Recently our team headed to Belarus for the Zimnyaya GP. The parcours is pretty flat but with some tough hills. In especially a short hill in the final makes it very interesting.
Our leaders were Ben Grenda, Jacob Rathe and Corey Leonard. While first was expected to perform in a possible sprint finish we wanted to follow some attacks with Rathe and Leonard when coming towards the end.

In the end the small hill led to a selection of 41 riders and even though Grenda was still in the group the hill made it impossible for him to really take part in the sprint. And as Ratha is yet to improve his fitness level it was neo-pro Leonard to shine on this day. With the final kilometers being ridden on a very high pace several sprinters already lost contact or suffered like Grenda.

The winner was classic rider Roger Hammond ahead of Vaitkus and Dennis. Corey Leonard finished on a fantastic 7th here and delivered far more than we had expected.

Trofeo Zssdi

imageshack.us/a/img703/5958/zssdi2013profile.jpg

My next race is in Italy for the Trofeo Zssdi. It`s actually a half Italian half Slovenian race. The profile starts pretty flat but becomes very hilly in the end. In especially the last 2-3 climbs should lead to selections with a puncheur being expected to take the win.

imageshack.us/a/img442/2418/zssdi2013team.jpg

My is no longer as good as in South Africa. But I still have decent legs and hope for a good result here. We have more or less our strongest puncheur team here but without anybody really peaking at the moment it`s more about a breakaway appearance and trying to keep contact as long as possible. The team will support me and I hope that I can fight for a top15 here.

imageshack.us/a/img707/2148/zssdi2013startlist.jpg

A lot of great puncheurs for a 1.2 race. In especialyl the Italian teams obviously want to win this one. Acqua & Sapone with Betancur and Garzelli probably the strongest. But also Dekker (WIT), De Marchi (Androni) Bisolti (Idea) or Rabbottini (Farnese) lead strong Italian teams.
Biggest challenger are the Italian Ulissi riding for Itera, Kump, Sarabia and Keinath.
Leopard with young duo Jungels/Kern are definitely good for a surprise and must be named for sure.

Just by looking at the startlist I probably can be super happy with a top15 here as the competition is packed with brilliant riders.

Good luck in Italy. Wink

Sush a close sprint in Belarus and Corey did great to get a seventh place finish Wink

Still loving this story. I don't comment nearly enough, but its still as awesome as it was last time I did XD

Really good results lately, he has earned those stat boosts,

Competition is fierce, but I hope for a top 10 place here Wink

Thanks all.
@sutty: I was surprised as well as Corey definitely is no sprinter at all but there was a gap behind him to the next riders. He had still a decent form after South Africa which was most important there.
@Flair:That`s good to hear. And it was time that he starts to improve. And with a successful Tour of South Africa just being finished this was the perfect timing to link his experience there with his training progression.

Scouting Report

It`s again the time of the year where the first scout reports come in. We only scout in the USA and Australia as these two are the only nationalities we want to sign as a feeder team for the big teams.
Last season we found some nice talents with Crawford, Leonard, Lawrence and Wilson and they already start to perform well.
Hopefully we can find similar talents again this year. The first reports are quite promising but it will be hard of course to grab the biggest talents as we surely aren`t the only team around.
Soon the U23 races will start and we might get a better opinion about some of them than our scouts are able to deliver from time to time.

Trofeo Zssdi

imageshack.us/a/img145/5363/zssdi20131.jpg

As already said this race is very hard towards the end and is a bit similar to Milano Turino and even though the startlist there would be far bigger, the competition here is already quite tough.
I must admit that I never had time to test these climbs in some training sessions as I wasn`t focussing this classic very much. So I have to hope that it`s not too hard for pure puncheurs.

imageshack.us/a/img7/4192/zssdi20136.jpg

After a few tries our Kiwi Josh Atkins is the first being successful today today. He is followed by Italian sprinter Cucinotta (Amore Vita).
Still some riders try to jump to this duo but at least the peloton seems to be fine with us at the moment.

imageshack.us/a/img834/6946/zssdi20138.jpg

3 more riders were able to join us. Casas (ISD Lampre CT), Perez Fernandez (Whirlpool) and Mihailov (CCC). With only 84km left the peloton allows them a gap of 4min.
This is the biggest difference to the bigger classics. The full race is only ~130km long, so definitely not the 200+km classic length in the Pro Tour.

imageshack.us/a/img201/8396/zssdi201310.jpg

The Italian teams are doing the pace at the moment. Androni for De Marchi, Acqua Sapone for Garzelli/Betancur, Farnese Vini for Rabottini and the former De Rosa team and now called Team WIT for Thomas Dekker.
70km left and the gap did improve to 4'30. The breakaway is working together very well but it is unlikely that they will success as the pace became far higher recently.

imageshack.us/a/img259/3976/zssdi201312.jpg

55km left and Aregger, Loosli (both Idea), Kessler (CWO) and Stangelj (Adria) with the first favourite attack. Team Idea really putting the pressure on the Italian teams with sending both of their leaders.

imageshack.us/a/img138/5350/zssdi201314.jpg

40km left and they reach the breakaway. The gap is at 2'25 but melting. Josh Atkins would have no chance against these riders and stopped working in the group. The now starting hillier part will exhaust him enough.

imageshack.us/a/img7/8946/zssdi201316.jpg

22km left and we start the third last climb. It`s a short ramp but probably the steepest section today. Time for Atskins to let go. He can`t follow the pace in the group and is riding solo in between both groups now. We had hoped to stay a bit longer to maybe have a team mate during or even after the first double climb.

imageshack.us/a/img856/1176/zssdi201318.jpg

Bontrager on the ground. It unfortunately happened quite often recently. So far we had good luck and nobody got injured.
Same this time as Nathan Brown continues riding soon after his crash. But he obviously lost contact now and so one of the most important helpers is missing in the final.

imageshack.us/a/img803/9439/zssdi201320.jpg

10km left and the peloton is still quite big when entering the first climb. The breakaway is already in sight and the late attackers got rid of all former breakaway riders and so it`s 5 riders in the front.

imageshack.us/a/img90/6727/zssdi201322.jpg

The first climb wasn`t as selective as thought but at least the breakaway is caught again. Time for other riders to attack with 5km to go. It`s De Marchi (Androni) and Beltran Suarez (EPM). Second one is a pure climber and with the selection starting it seems as if the better climbers are favoured over the pure puncheurs which is not the best news for me. But so far I can keep contact with the top20 here.

imageshack.us/a/img705/4256/zssdi201324.jpg

4,4km to go and I am coming to the front while the duo is caught. Unfortunately Mannion is not yet in form and Brown did crash which means I am alone already.
Dekker, Ulissi, Garzelli, De Marchi and Dyrnes with the next and this time more powerful attack.

imageshack.us/a/img441/7843/zssdi201328.jpg

Rabottini did close the gap and only 27 riders including myself were able to follow the pace. After the attacks I did some work at the front as well but this did exhaust me a bit too much and I have lost a few positions.

imageshack.us/a/img163/4261/zssdi201330.jpg

The sprint starts and it`s still ~20 riders fighting for the win. Unfortunately I have to sprint from the ~15th position and don`t feel very fresh.

imageshack.us/a/img845/7539/zssdi201332.jpg

Garzelli with an easy win ahead of Ulissi and De Marchi. Italian dominance here.

imageshack.us/a/img526/6521/zssdi201333.jpg

As 16. I cross the line and seeing the competition, my form and the hard terrain I think this was the maximum and a decent result. It surely could have been better but I kept contact with the best.

Brown directly went to the doc after this stage where he finished far down with more than 8min back but luckily nothing serious. He might have some pain the next few days but nothing is broken. Good luck for us.

My next race is the Istrian Spring Trophy in Croatia, another hilly 4 day race with a short prologue and 2 hard stages.

Porec Trophy

img189.imageshack.us/img189/893/porectrophyprofile.jpg

Our team is already heading to Croatia for the Porec Trophy. It`s our first cobbled race this season and next to the hilly races it`s our main focus as we have some nice options with Craddock and Rathe. The rest of the team including myself did join them on the Croatia trip as the Istrian Spring Trophy will start within the next days.
The cobbled parts are not very long and also the total amount of cobbles could be more. But it was a first test for us here to see what we can reach.

The race was mainly controlled by other teams with big favourites Kump or Morkov who are some of the best cobblers in this division. First even is a great allrounder who takes advantage of his sprint skills as well.
Our team was always riding at the front and tried to improve the pace in especially on the cobbles. Therefore Atkins, Leonard and Lawrence always came to the front on the pavement while Wilson were taking care of Craddock and Rathe.

This led to a selection of only ~40 riders including our two leaders and neopro Wilson, who showed his best performance so far.

The sprint finish was a bit uphill which even more favoured Kump but in the end he went too early while Craddock was perfectly positioned by Rathe. He waited for quite a long time and just started his sprint with 500m to the line. Surprisingly he was super-fast and passed all other riders, who obviously weren`t focussing this race that much.

Craddock wins a great first classic this season for our team and gives us great hopes for the upcoming Istrian Spring Trophy prologue.
Rathe as 13th with a great result as well. Wilson as 36th is a success as he had to work quite hard for Craddock but didn`t lose contact today.
