So unlucky Dominik, the line came a little bit too late, better luck next time |

That's good and solid results from the Nats, good results for Dominik, and great reviews
And so close and yet so far on that stage, but that's a great sign of the form Dom has already at the beginning of the race, looking good

It was a good sign for the rest of the race. Dominik seems to want to take his second stage race of the season.

Thanks for the comments, guys. It was indeed a good stage, quite encouraging. Here's the next stage - even more encouraging, I think

July 4, 2012
Österreich-Rundfahrt, Stage 2
The first decisive day! The profile is mostly flat until the pack hits the lethal last climb up to the Kitzbühler Horn. With 11 kms, it's decently long plus it's really, really steep so we should see quite some changes in the GC.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
Well, my shape is decent and yesterday really raised my hopes for today. But I have no clue how good the others are at the moment, so we'll have to see. Anyway, I'll give my best, I would be really satisfied with a Top 3-5.
Km 4: | The first attacks are being launched. They don't seem very likely to succeed though considering the stage finish. | . | Km 23: | No group could get free yet, but the attacks keep coming. | . | | | Km 45: | A group of 8 found themselves in front of the pack. Most prominent riders are Janek Tombak (Osterhus) and Zdenek Stybar (NSP). | . | Km 90: | At the first mountain sprint, the advance is at about 5 minutes. | . | | | Km 118: | GreenEdge does all the work in the pack, Johan Tschopp seems to be in good shape. The break loses a lot of their advance, it's at 3'30 by now. 37 kms to go. | . | Km 135: | Niki Östergaard (Glud&Marstrand) comes in third at the second mountain sprint and takes over the lead in the mountain classification. | . | | | Km 136: | Without the pack noticing, Tejay Van Garderen got away! Accompanied by Hubert Schwab and Gerhard Trampusch, he is already almost a minute in front of the peloton. | . | Km 139: | The pack splits, only 40 riders are left in the main group. Nerz's most important helper Valerio Agnoli is still with him. | . | Km 141: | Luckily (for the other favorites), Van Garderen's attack was half-hearted. He's back with the others. | . | Km 144: | The pack enters the final climb. The break is about a minute in front but won't stand a chance. | . | | | Km 145: | As the escapees are almost caught, Marek Rutkiewicz starts the battle for the win with an early attack! Michele Gaia and Tejay Van Garderen follow! | . | | | Km 147: | Rutkiewicz and Gaia are a bit in front of a group of six including Van Garderen, Nerz and Agnoli. | . | Km 148: | Agnoli really pushes the pace and brings him and Nerz to the front. | . | | | Km 150: | 5 kms to go: Seven riders are 45 seconds in front of the rest. Rutkiewicz (CCC), Van Garderen, Gaia (Miche), Swiss champion Tschopp and Zeits (Atlas) are with the Liquigas duo. | . | Km 151: | Nerz keeps pushing and the advance grows to a minute. Seems like the winner will be in this group! | . | | | Km 153: | Tschopp takes over on the last 2 kms. Gaia and Zeits seem to lose touch while Nerz is still right on his wheel. | . | | | Km 154: | One kilometer to go: Tschopp created a gap, only Nerz can follow! | . | | | Km 155: | Eventually, Tschopp pulled away easily and takes a fantastic win! But Nerz keeps the second spot and gains valuable seconds on the better time trialists – basically Van Garderen, who comes in fifth. | . | Km 155: | Agnoli lost a lot of energy working for his leader but still finishes on a great sixth spot! Strong Liquigas team work today! |

Haha! That was great! As a commenter on this blog recently wrote: Bad shape my ass! Wow! I'm quite euphoric, as you might notice. I really didn't think it would work out that well. I mean not only did I finish second, I also made up a huge amount of time on Tejay Van Garderen, who I still consider to be my main rival. An more or less by the way, I already got the lead in both the points and the young riders classification!
Okay, so Johan Tschopp really did great today, just riding away from us all but I really should beat him in the time trial and my shape will be improving in the next days while he kind of seems to peek already. So I'm looking forward to the next stages optimistically!
Oh, and I must not forget to thank Valerio for his performance today! He rode incredibly and deserves a lot of credit for helping me so much!
Well, that's it for today. Yours,

Oh just one thing, I think Stefan Denifl is Austrian, not Saint Helenian.

Got it, guys, thanks for the hint Those things can happen, the abbreviation for Austria is "at" while the other one was "ai" so it was a simple spelling mistake.
Here's the third stage:

Österreich-Rundfahrt, Stage 3
After last stage's horror climb, this one's a bit easier. The climb, though 16 kms long, is both less steep and followed by almost 50 descending kilometers. It is expected that the field splits into smaller groups on the climb, it would be a surprise if a single rider made it to the line.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
My shape is getting better and I'm very pleased with my performances, so I'm confident for today. We might send a rider into the break, but Timothy Duggan, the best man for the climb, is in bad shape, so we'll see if he can make it. Otherwise, I will just try to keep up in the front group and as I'm rather quick for a stage racer, I might be able to sprint for the win today.
Km 3: | The first attacks are there: Timothy Duggan is among the escapees. | . | Km 15: | 12 riders are in front but they aren't clear yet. Duggan falls back to the pack. | . | Km 44: | At the first mountain sprint, 14 riders are in front but the pack is still chasing. | . | | | Km 66: | Now at the second mountain sprint, we have a total of 17 riders split into different groups in front of the pack. The first group of 9 has an advance of already more than three minutes. | . | Km 83: | At the foot of today's major climb, they all reunited and lead with 5'30 to the pack. That group could become really dangerous (regarding the stage win, not the overall, of course). | . | | | Km 90: | Halfway through the climb, Agnoli overtakes the pace and splits the pack. Also, the escapees are almost caught again. | . | | | Km 99: | Johan Tschopp himself made the pace on the last ascending kilometers and completely ripped the field apart. The escapees are long caught and only four riders were able to keep up with him: Nerz, Gaia, Rutkiewicz and Van Garderen, the Top 5 of the GC. | . | Km 104: | On the descent, a group of five around Agnoli comes back to the front. | . | | | Km 106: | On the small hill, Johan Tschopp makes another move! He is totally on fire. Rutkiewicz tries to counter. | . | Km 116: | Agnoli again does an amazing job and brings the two back! | . | | | Km 133: | With 13 kms to go, Hubert Schwab gives it a try. He's no threat for the GC but it could be a serious bid for the stage win. | . | Km 135: | He is caught soon again though, as Tschopp continues to do the pace. He really is strong! | . | | | Km 140: | On the last descent, with 6 kms to go, Tschopp sets one last acceleration. Nerz and again Schwab follow. | . | Km 142: | Turns out it wasn't a real attack. The group of 10 will sprint for the win! | . | | | Km 144: | The Swiss starts the last 2 kms from the front. Is he really that good? Nerz sits in fourth position but looks quite tired. | . | | | Km 145: | My god! That man simply pulls away! He's incredible! | . | | | Km 146: | Johan Tschopp is obviously unstoppable so far. He almost creates a time gap! Nerz finished sixth, Agnoli tenth. |

Phew, tough stage. Tougher than expected maybe. Johan Tschopp is really going for it. I had a hard time following him up that mountain and if it wasn't for Valerio, I think he might have been gone with that attack on the short hill. Again, I'm very greatful for his work.
I just had bad legs today, in contrary to yesterday. Now I have to hope for a better shape tomorrow, as we again have a mountain top finish. I can't really afford to lose more time to him if I really want to win this.
So long,

They are decent, but not too good, actually: 76 mountain, 75 hill, 75 recovery but only 66 TT, that's where I put my hopes on

With Tschopp in such a great form, it will be difficult for Dominik to fight for first place. Perhaps the Swiss's supermacy will stop soon? |
