That's my hope, that the teams who want to make the race hard actually have the terrain to do it, even if it is not as selective as an important one day race should be. Still, I rank the Worlds much, much higher than the Olympics, and this year's race just hurted my eyes. This devaluates the concept of the World Champion.
It doesn't devalue anything. The route is the route. If it's not hard enough for a certain rider to win, it's because that rider doesn't have the qualities to win on that course.
And having qualities is what makes a world champion.

Well he can say it, like he's free to say whatever he wants to. It's not like he's showing any sort of credibility that'd make his words gospel, is it ? |

The World champs are good if there are a large number of riders in with a shot of winning, this exact profile would have been fine if the route had been twisty and a break hence had a chance of holding on, this course gave them no chance.

Why be unhappy? IMO every type of rider should have a chance to become world champion at least once in their carreer - Cav got that chance (admit it: there's very little sprinter WC opportunities) and took it in style. It was a good race. |

Why does it always desend into nationalism? the course was annouced a few years ago, everyone knew it would be a sprint finish and the fastest sprinter won! its not devalued just because the guy from your country isnt a great sprinter |

How far ahead is the route for the WC announced? Won't the next race be similar to Amstel?
Do you know anything about how the route will be in 2013, or something? |

That's your opinion, and I disagree. This was like a Track on the Road real life version, something I don't even like in GTs, and something that should not ever feature in Road Cycling World Championships. A route that is absolutely biased towards guys who don't hit the air until the last 200m can't decide a World Champion.
It's absolutely fine if a sprinter wins the Worlds (they have the most wins in the last decade, by far), but at least the route should give a hope to the not-so-fast riders to drop them.

Just like Cavedish wouldn't have stood a chance in Bogota 1995, (and on a couple of other circuits so far), pure climbers didn't stand a chance today. And I suppose you can hardly imagine a route that'd give the same chances to Moncoutié and Cavendish. So, choices have to be made.
Of course a little more balance would have been welcome. Some soft cobbles, more narrow and winding roads, more hills if there are any around, etc. |
