Garmin - 4th season Giro d`Italia
Avin Wargunnson
Similar result like the last year, but little bit better this time. Four riders in top 8 are great in such a hard race, the front trio was just too good Smile
I'll be back

Thanks sutty & Avin.

The Tour of the Basque Country is an annual cycling stage race held in the Basque Country, Spain, in April. The first race was held in 1924 with record champ José Antonio Gonzalez in the 70`s.
Because the Basque Country is a mountainous area there are hardly any flat stages, and the event's winners therefore tend to be good climbers. Most climbs in the Vuelta al País Vasco are not high, but often they are quite steep.

In a race that was totally up to the time trialists we hoped for a good overall result by Sanchez. Unfortunately this dream was already over after a crash on the 2nd stage. The 32nd in the end was surely not the place we were looking for.
So this year we surely want to come back to our 2011 season, where Hesjedal had a nice 4th spot in the Basque country.

Garmin squad 2013

Roche still needs a bit to perform on the highest level. Actually I am a bit afraid of his form in the Ardennes as he is just 75 yet and not long to go until the Ardennes, where I hoped for 95+ or so.
So we start with a double lead as Kessiakoff is already prepared for high expectations. The Swede can totally ride on his own and surely wants to show that his top 10 Vuelta result was no one-hit wonder.
Pate and Butler might be their best support for the hilly stages as also Duggan and Barton. Murphy is filling up the squad in case of hard pace working while Souchon will try to learn from the Pro Tour riders to improve more.

Lots of big names here in especially Astana with 3 big stars. Also all 3 younger stage racers Kreuziger, Gesink and Brajkovic are here. All 3 of them might try to win their first GT this season overtaking the fight from Contador, Wiggins or Schleck.
Due to the time trial it will be hard for Roche and Kessiakoff to perform too well as they need to gain some time on the hilly stages.

Thanks sutty. Indeed lots of big names here.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_1.jpg
The race starts already with a hard stage on the first day. Lot`s of climbs and descents. The favourite`s form will surely be tested today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_3.jpg
Pujol (Omega), Bodrogi (TT1), Kroon (BMC) and Barton (Garmin) in an early attack.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_4.jpg
Movistar is doing the pace in the early race. Obviously Evans` performance so far this season convinced them completely and they work hard for him.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_5.jpg
García (Caja Rural) and Losada (Katusha) join the breakaway.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_6.jpg
Mid-stage more attacks. Anza, Perez Arrieta, and ZEits attack with Rujano and Kruijswijk following behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_7.jpg
The breakaway became pretty big and many riders are trying to win this stage now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_8.jpg
Still on the longest climb in the middle of the stage, when Van den Broeck attacks. He might not be the best puncheur but surely a great climber and dangerous man, who missed almost the whole last season with an injury.
85km to go.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_10.jpg
Movistar is leading the peloton over the top with most Garmin riders in the first line.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_12.jpg
Van Den Broeck is reaching the first riders. Rujano and Perez are trying to follow the Belgium.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_13.jpg
Brajkovic is the first favourite with a late attack. VdB is still a bit ahead.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_14.jpg
Roche is falling back now. Hopefully he is in form for the Ardennes.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_15.jpg
Contador uses a descent for a nice attack. No one is able to follow him immediately.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_16.jpg
But Kreuziger is pulling him back and attacks directly with Monfort being following him.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_17.jpg
Many riders follow like Brajkovic, Contador and Uran. Also Kessiakoff is doing strong in 6th position but due to a bad daily form he suffers. (-5)

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_18.jpg
On top of the last climb Van Den Broeck just has a small gap but Didi is pushing him over the line preparing himself for the descent.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_19.jpg
And so he really wins the first stage ahead of Contador, who again used the descent for an attack.
Also Cobo, who is just 27s back is coming in solo.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_20.jpg
Evans then leads the next group 43s later over the line.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_1_21.jpg
Kessiakoff fought hard but after trying to attack on the last hill he even lost some ground and comes in with +1'15. Still a good ride and hopefully he feels better tomorrow.

A hard day with all the attacks going onSad

roturn

The second stage also is really hilly with a hard climb in the end. Can Van Den Broeck defend his lead, will Contador again be the strongest of the favourites and can Garmin do better today?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_23.jpg
10 riders in todays break including Garmin`s Duggan. Other big names Arroyo (Movistar), Capecci (Liquigas), Perez (Euskaltel) or former Garmin rider and Tour de France KoM winner Danielson.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_24.jpg
FDJ (Kreuziger) and Ag2r (Van Den Broeck) are doing the pace. Contador`s Astana team is still relaxing behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_25.jpg
In the middle of the stage Joaquim Rodriguez attacks. The Katusha rider is no longer the one of the best puncheurs in the world but surely still a threat.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_26.jpg
Duggan is one of the earliest riders being caught again. The American climber isn`t that suited for the pure hilly races. Also Rodriguez is back in the peloton again.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_28.jpg
Late in the stage the first favourites attack. Uran is making the first move with race leader Van Den Broeck following as also Monfort and Rodriguez again.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_29.jpg
Also Contador is attacking now, while the former breakaway is almost caught.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_30.jpg
The Spaniard is even the only rider being able to create a real gap when he joins Arroyo, Perez and Capecchi.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_31.jpg
Behind Cobo sets the next attack. Contador`s team mate following him is no one else but Frank Schleck, who would be the captain in all other teams.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_32.jpg
Kreuziger, Evans and Van Den Broeck again try top bring them back while Kessiakoff is also accelerating. He feels much better today and wants to forget yesterdays bad day. Also nice to see Roche not being annoyed by helping the Swede. In the Ardennes Kessiakoff might remember and give him back the hard work.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_33.jpg
Most riders being back again due to Kessiakoff`s effort and he is still doing strong keeping the high pace.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_34.jpg
Contador, Cobo and Kreuziger are ahead, while Kessiakoff is attacking close to the top. Anton, Schleck and Evans can`t follow him and also Brajkovic, Uran and Velits fall back, while Van Den Broeck really struggles now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_35.jpg
Cobo was the strongest today winning the stage solo.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_36.jpg
Kreuziger sprinting on the 2nd with Contador being 3rd but also Kessiakoff in this group. Strong performance by him today, which will bring him up a bit for sure.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_37.jpg
Anton 5th ahead of Evans with Schleck falling a bit back. This move makes all riders behind him being counted with the same time than Anton. Stupid officials as there have been gaps for sure. So Kessiakoff won`t climb too far now...

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_2_38.jpg
Van Den Broeck loses some more seconds behind this group losing the leader jersey again after just one day.

Stage 2 went better than the first one, Kessiakoff is not so far behind. But the guys with more chance are up front already. Hope Kessiakoff can stay with them during the next three stages and make a decent TT at the end.

Good ride by Kessiakoff, showing that a top-10 is still possible. Smile

Kessiakoff did some strong riding todayWink

Thanks all. Being in 97 form and having a +5 surely helps with just a 76 hill rider.

Vuelta al Pais Vasco - Stage 3
Villatuerta - Zuia-Murgia
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_039.jpg
The third stage is not as hilly as the last two on the first half. Also the final is not that difficult but still some steep hills good for attacks. Plus a small bumper in the very end, where attacks can surely expected.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_040.jpg
6 riders in the break of the day.
Losada (Katusha), Pidgornyy (Vacansoleil), Noval (Saxo Bank), Irizar (Shack), Santambrogio (BMC) and Gadret (Ag2r)

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_041.jpg
Behind Liquigas is powering over the first bigger hill splitting the peloton. 5 Garmin riders are still in this small group.
Due to the longer descent and flat part the groups will fusion some time later again.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_043.jpg
Kessiakoff has big plans for today and so 3 Garmin riders are send to the front, where they do the pace now. Contador`s Astana squad is covering his leader directly behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_044.jpg
Later on the stage, when it comes into the more hilly terrain it`s FDJ with a huge effort to bring the riders back. 5 riders for Kreuziger now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_046.jpg
Frank Schleck starts the first attacks of the day. Hard decision if this is a tactical move or if he is stronger than Contador.
Kreuziger, Uran and Anton decide to follow immediately.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_047.jpg
Evans with the next attack after pulling everything together again.
Kreuziger again, Brajkovic and Cobo follow.
Kessiakoff is accelerating behind now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_048.jpg
Many riders fall back. Also Roche is not able to follow longer. Also Gesink, Gerdemann, Sanchez, Rodriguez or Van Den Broeck in this 2nd group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_049.jpg
In the first group it`s Brajkovic with the next attack. Kessiakoff still riding very well being in the first rows.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_050.jpg
But like all other attacks so far he was pulled back.
Comingto the small bumper in the end it`s Siutsou with another attack. This time Kessiakoff is following first with Schleck and Kreuziger following again.
Nothing to see from Contador.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_051.jpg
Kessiakoff is leading Schleck and Kreuziger over the top, while Anton also created a gap behind. All other favourites are behind in a bigger group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_052.jpg
Daniel Moreno tries to bridge the gap to Anton, while the trio looks promising ahead.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_053.jpg
Kreuziger was surely the strongest winning the sprint with a gap ahead of Schleck and Kessiakoff on a great 3rd today. Unfortunately Schleck was the better sprinter today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_3_054.jpg
A pity that Anton had no energy left in the end. So the obvious gap became just a small gap and all riders got the same time than him. Another time bad news for Kessiakoff, who gained just 20s to these riders but still climbing into the top5 overall.

A pity that Antón prevented a bigger time gap but really, really great riding nevertheless!

Another great ride by Kessiakoff! Antón surely had other plans today, but a gap is a gap and a podium is a podium and always a great achievement Smile
