Petronas - Monster Energy; The end of an era
Tuco the Ugly
Pretty weak field in Montreal.

Still, a nice win and good teamwork from Ligthart, Vanmarcke, and Maaskant. Hopefully Andy bought them a bottle of bubbly to share Wink

@ all: Thank you guys. Andy was by far the best rider in the Canadian races, and the fiels was pretty weak. Still, he needed his team mates to work very, very hard for him. And of course he bought them a nice bottle of bubbly!

GP de Wallonie. 196.6 kilometres form Chadfontaine to Namur through the Belgian province of Wallonie. In the first part of the race are a few climbs, as well as in the last 25km. The finish is uphill, the Citadeller de Namur. So a good race for the puncheurs!
img685.imageshack.us/img685/8648/4profiel.jpg

In 2010 the race was won by German Paul Martens, who outsprinted Riccardo Ricco and Cadel Evans.

Our team:
img5.imageshack.us/img5/5042/5ploeg.jpg

Favourites:
*** Jelle Vanendert, Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step), Brice Feillu (Leopard)
** Kevin de Weert (Quick Step), Rein Taaramäe (Cofidis), Sebastian Langeveld (Rabobank)
* Joost van Leijen (Vacansoleil), Kristof Vandewalle (Quick Step), Peter Kennaugh (Sky)

Our goal:
We want to get Jelle Vanendert to win this one, but we would be satisfied with a top 3.

The race kicks off with a BOTD consisiting of 14 riders. Most known names are T. Meyer (Garmin), M. Wynants (Rabbank), N. Sijmens (Cofidis), G. Nizzolo (Leopard) and our stagair Maxim Lefevre. They get a maximum lead of about 5 minutes.
img72.imageshack.us/img72/6899/6botd.jpg

The peloton is coming closer as the riders face the last 3 hills of the day. The first one is the Cote de Lustin (2.7km at 5.7%). 20 km before the finish, the leaders have a gap of 1'28.
img607.imageshack.us/img607/5213/719km.jpg

Still in the ascend, 18.5km before the finish, we see the first attack out of the peloton. Brice Feillu (Leopard), Rein Taaramäe (Cofidis) and Kevin de Weert (Quick Step) try to close the gap to the leading group and go for the win.
img585.imageshack.us/img585/9868/818km.jpg

But in the descend and in the flat part to the penultimate climb, the Tienne aux Pierres (2.9km at 5.4%), the peloton led by Rabobank and Sky reels them in. In the ascend, Sebastian Langeveld (Rabobank) is the next one to attack with 12km to go. Again, we decide to wait.
img4.imageshack.us/img4/2743/912km.jpg

Langeveld is joined by again Taaramäe, Feillu and De Weert. With 8km to go, they have a '31 lead, so we send Zingle, Rosseler, Vanmarcke and Lefevre to the front of the peloton to chase them. De Greef & Vanendert save themselves for the final climb.
img189.imageshack.us/img189/5772/108km.jpg

Before the climb of the Citadelle de Namur (1.9km at 5.8%) starts, the 4 leaders get caught. Immediately De Greef takes the lead to be the leadout for Vanendert. With one kilometre to go, the Quick Step trio De Weert, Kristof Vandewalle and Sylvain Chavanel take the lead.
img31.imageshack.us/img31/6653/111kmr.jpg

300 metres before the finish, Vandewalle is still in the lead, but he has overestimated the climb and looses speed. Jelle Vanendert has started an impressive sprint 600 metres before the finish and is looking to pass his opponents.
img208.imageshack.us/img208/3723/12300m.jpg

And he does! Vanendert takes his 2nd win of the season (Copa Agostoni). Dutch Joost van Leijen (Vacansoleil) sprints in the wheel of Vanendert to the 2nd place and Vandewalle hangs on to the 3rd place.

The winner:
img836.imageshack.us/img836/5749/15vanendert.jpg

Word from the DS: The fully Belgian team did an excellent job on Belgian soil. It was very good to see stagair Maxim Lefevre in the BOTD, and even finishing inside the peloton after a tough last part of the race! Vanendert waited long at the last climb, but when he started his jump, no one could follow him!

Our team:
img72.imageshack.us/img72/8609/4ploeg.jpg

The favourites:
*** Marcel Kittel, Darryl Impey (NettAPP), Kenny van Hummel (Skil)
** Jimmy Casper (Saur), Peter Sagan, Jurgen Roelandts (Omega Pharma)
* Denis Flahaut (Bretagne), B. Traksel (Ladbouwkrediet), L. Mondory (AG2R)

Our goal:
The win with Kittel.

The BOTD is formed by 7 riders: Saïd Haddou (Europcar), Justin Jules (La Pomme), Ludovic Mottet (Wallonie), Rafal Ratajczyk (CCC), Geoffrey Soupe (FDJ), Steven Tronet (Roubaix) and Florian Vachon (Bretagne). The 7 get a maximum lead of 7'30. With 20km to go, it's still 2'10.
img831.imageshack.us/img831/4084/520km.jpg

But the pace drops down in the peloton. There's no team that wants to do it, and we can't do it. We have 3 stagaires in the team who are pretty exhausted and can only send one men in the chase, not to mess up the sprint train. That's why that with 10 kilometres to go, the leading group still has a lead of 2'09. FDJ's Geoffrey Soupe tried to attack, but gets caught quickly.
img189.imageshack.us/img189/5587/610km.jpg

The breakaway is going to win today. With 1 kilometre to go, the peloton is '42 behind. Ratajczyk starts the sprint.
img638.imageshack.us/img638/2505/71km.jpg

But the best sprinter in the BOTD who wins. Roubaix Lille Métropole's Steven Tronet takes his first win of the season, the biggest in his career so far. Vachon gets 2nd, Haddou 3rd. Marcel Kittel wins the sprint of the peloton, 27 seconds behind.

The 2011 UCI Road Cycling World Championships are in the Danish capitol of Copenhagen.

Note: I simulate the world, as to my opinion I'm a team DS, not a national coach.

Individual Time Trial:
The Individual Time Trial is on a 43 kilometre, almost flat route, what makes German Tony Martin and the defending World champ Fabian Cancellara the biggest contenders for the gold medal. Our riders are Lieuwe Westra, Jos van Emden, Niki Terpstra and Thomas Dekekr (back from his doping ban).

img72.imageshack.us/img72/1705/1itt.jpg

So Fabian Cancellara takes his 5th ITT world title. The margin to his opponents are very small: Martin gets 2nd at '7 and LL Sánchez 3rd at '17. The best Monster Energy-rider is Sébastien Rosseler, who manages to get the 7th place. Best Dutch rider is Thomas Dekker in 10th place.
img341.imageshack.us/img341/5831/2cancellara.jpg

Road Race:
The road race is 264.6 kilometres long and has a few small climb in it every lap, but the prediction is that it will be a mass sprint. So we have some sprinters in our team (Bos, Van Hummel, Ligthart, none of them with a form over 80) and some guys that can try to attack (Kroon, Terpstra).

img406.imageshack.us/img406/6760/3rry.jpg
But the prediction comes out. Mark Cavendish won only a few races this year, but he wins the most important win. He edges out German André Greipel and USA's Tyler Farrar. Best Monster rider is Peter Sagan in 5th place. Best Dutch rider is Theo Bos in 27th place....

Thanks! This was the first or one of the first times that I won an uphill sprint (also rundum Köln, but the competition was weak there). The field wasn't very strong, but still some good puncheurs (Taaramäe, Chavanel, De Weert) in it.

September review

September was a great month for us, with 3 World Tour wins (Andy Schleck with the Canadian double and Robert Gesink winning the Vuelta a Espana).
img232.imageshack.us/img232/4120/0overview.jpg

UCI World Tour
Riders
Joaquim Rodríguez jumps to the first place, and Robert Gesink to 2nd. Although winning the Tour de Romandie, the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a Espana, Purito collected more points in the early season. Philippe Gilbert is the number 3 and Andy Schleck closes the top 10.
img214.imageshack.us/img214/994/2wtr.jpg

Teams
After Garmin - Cervélo was leading the World Tour teams ranking for months, our fantastic month made us pass them. Katusha is in 3rd place, mostly thanks to Purito.
img202.imageshack.us/img202/1449/3wttx.jpg

Continental Tour
Riders
Team NetAPP's Daryl Impey is the surprising leader of the Continental Tour. He has collected mant podium places and a few wins this years to be in th elead. Andy Schleck is our best placed rider in 2nd place, with Pim Ligthart in 8th.
img100.imageshack.us/img100/3403/4ctr.jpg

Teams
It;s no surprise that we also lead the Continental Teams ranking. Skil - Shimano is in a great 2nd place, followed by Cofidis.
img266.imageshack.us/img266/6916/5ctt.jpg

CQ ranking
Riders
Robert Gesink leads the CQ-ranking with over 1500 points to Alberto Contador. Joaquim Rodríguez is in 3rd and Andy Schleck is in 7th.
img823.imageshack.us/img823/5560/6cqr.jpg

Teams
Monster Energy - Ford has over 10.000 points, 3500 more than Garmin - Cervélo and Team Sky. Androni Giocatolli and Cofidis battle it out for the promotion to the World Tour, while Liquigas (!), Vacansoleil and AG2R are in danger to relegate.

A busy month for us in October: 7 Italian autumn classics, a few stages in the Tour de Wallonie - Picarde, 2 French races and the Sparkassen Münsterland Giro. I have to cancel the Japan Cup, don't feel like taking the plane Wink

The Memorial Marco Pantani. The 8th edition in the region of Cesenatico, the birth place of the Italian cycling legend Marco Pantani. Il Elefantino was one of the best climbers the world has ever known, winning many mountain stages and the Tour and Giro in '98.
img507.imageshack.us/img507/2662/2marcopantani.jpg

The Memorial Marco Pantani is a hilly 190km race from Cesena to Cesenatico. It's the 8th edition and there are some famous former winners, as Damiano Cunego, Gilberto Simoni and Franco Pellizotti. In 2010 the race was won by Elia Viviani.

The favourites
*** Andy Schleck, Stefano Garzelli (Acqua & Sapone), Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago)
** Przemyslaw Niemiec (Lampre), Stefan Schumacher (Miche), Enrico Gasparotto (Astana)
* Simon Spilak (Lampre), Jure Kocjan (Team Type I), Pim Ligthart

4 riders ride away from the peloton and form the BOTD.: Alessandro Bisolti (Farnese Vini), Giampaolo Caruso (Katusha), Claudio Corioni (Acqua & Sapone) & Guillaume Levarlet (Saur).

With 50 kilometres to go, the lead has increased to 7'07. None of the teams want to do the chase, so we decide to send our stagaires to the front of the peloton.
img207.imageshack.us/img207/807/750km.jpg

That works pretty well, although they were joined by the other domestiques of our team, as well as the Colnago-boys. With 12 kilometre to go, the lead is 1'50.
img828.imageshack.us/img828/1728/812km.jpg

Farnese Vini's Alessandro Bisolti decides to try it on his own. With 7 kilometres to go his lead is 1'28 to the peloton.
img89.imageshack.us/img89/3258/94km.jpg

In the last 10 kilometres, Andy Schleck takes the lead of the chasing group, as being a luxury domestique for Pim Ligthart. With 2km to go, the gap to Bisolti is less than 20 seconds.
img21.imageshack.us/img21/7341/102500m.jpg

Bisolti has been caught, when the leading group starts the last climb of the day. Colnago's Federico Canuti attacks and he creates a gap to Stefan Schumacher (Miche) and Pim Ligthart.
img17.imageshack.us/img17/8770/11400m.jpg

Canuti can hold his lead and wins his first race of the year. Stefano Garzelli sprints to 2nd place, Ligthart gets 3rd.

Today's winner:

Word from the DS: None of the teams wanted to catch the breakaway. So we gave it all, and had only 2 fresh men left over for the final. Andy Schleck decided to work for Ligthart and it ended in a 3rd place. Good result, maybe we could have done better when Ligtahrt had worked for Andy, but who knows???

Just caught up with this story. It`s a pretty strong team you have there. I really liked how you started the story with the small introduction.

Good luck in future races.

Also I deleted these spam comments. Haven`t seen them before. You can PM me if it happens again in your story. I always hate these spam bots. especially if they are in my story. Wink
