03.09.2010: Vuelta a España
Stage 6
Granada - Cordoba: 179.0km
Tactics meeting
We're putting all hills behind us. Today's stage marks the beginning of a series of flat stages in the Vuelta. Ciolek is buzzing. We will keep on doing our daily routine: Catching breaks and leading out our German sprinter.
Vaitkus did exactly what he is paid to do today: Keeping our train at the front in the last kilometers.
Under the red kite, we were dominating! Eisel and points leader Ciolek left all the other sprinters behind.
Another double victory! Finally, everything clicked one hundred percent. Ciolek gets his first Grand Tour stage win! Let's repeat this tomorrow.

04.09.2010: Vuelta a España
Stage 7
Cordoba - Cadiz: 235.0km
Tactics meeting
We are on a roll, and today's flat stage should mean another Ciolek win. That would be a good feeling to bring into the time trial tomorrow.
Tomas Vaitkus wasn't as strong as yesterday, and we were lagging behind a bit 2 km from the line.
Because of the weaker positioning by Vaitkus, Ciolek got a little boxed in. He had to go early!
He couldn't quite get to the front. The stage win was between stage 5 winner Herrero and Alejandro Valverde, who had found some speed in his pedals today.
Valverde won by a few centimeters! The long stage probably made him fresher than the other sprinters, although Ciolek could've taken it had he been positioned better by our team. Tomorrow we put away the sprinting legs for a day: it's time trial time!

The worst thing is that it's not even unrealistic when you look at the stats. Because of the weak sprint lineup in the Vuelta, the stage wins are up for grabs if the Discovery lead-out gets messed up. |

05.09.2010: Vuelta a España
Stage 8
Cadiz - San Fernando: 41.0km
Tactics meeting
It's the longest time trial in the race, but 41km is still not very scary. Pereiro is decent against the clock, so he should be fine today. Luis Leon Sanchez will probably take back the red jersey, as he is a better time trialist than Velits. Anyway, Peter should be pleased with his four days in red.
Stage 5 winner Herrero is having good legs at the moment. The Galician set the best time so far.
Our ProTour leader Roman Kreuziger hasn't shown much so far in the race, but he is slowly finding some form. That was evident today, as he sliced 12 seconds off Herrero's time to take the provisional lead.
Thomas Lövkvist is thinking about his GC prospects, and that was obviously a good motivation today. The Swede relegated Kreuziger to 2nd by beating our man by 33 seconds.
Oscar Pereiro was unspectacular, but keeps himself near the top end of the GC. He took a provisional 12th place, 1'18 behind Lövkvist.
I guess Lovkvist was surprised when this man crossed the line. Carlos Castaño powered home to take the lead, 12 seconds ahead of Lövkvist! Unexpected.
Time trials are not Valverde's forte, but he did a decent job today, clocking in 51 seconds behind surprise leader Castaño. 8th on the stage so far for Valverde.
Luis Leon Sanchez was riding for the red jersey, but couldn't keep Castaño at bay. The Caisse rider finished 16 seconds slower, and is therefore trailing Castaño by 9 seconds in the GC.
Could Velits keep his red jersey? No way. The Slovakian is more about quick bursts of speed than prolonged efforts. Still, he got an honorable 20th place and sits 10th in the GC. The most important GC news for us: Pereiro is 16th, 1'50 behind new race leader Carlos Castaño.

06.09.2010: Vuelta a España
Stage 9
Jerez - Sevilla: 178.0km
Tactics meeting
This is the last stage in the Southern part of Spain, and it's the flattest in the race. That bodes well for another mass sprint for Ciolek. It's a windy day though, so we must be careful.
We were prepared for some wind, but it turned out to be a mild hurricane. 40km from the finish, a split occured, which caught out both Pereiro and Ciolek.
When Caisse d'Epargne noticed this, they put the hammer down on the front! Red jersey man Castaño was still in the Caisse-led front group.
Panic! The Caisse guys pulled away from Pereiro's group, so we sent back Rubiera and Noval to help out. We kept only Kreuziger and Velits in the Caisse group.
After having been 2 minutes behind, Pereiro's group slowly crawled back towards the first part of the peloton. 4km left, and the gap was less than a minute.
In all the chaos, Valverde and Usov had sneaked out of the front group, and looked to settle the stage win between themselves.
From his better position on Usov's back wheel, Valverde grabbed his third Vuelta stage win! Today he also got the red jersey.
Kreuziger and the rest of the front group finished 30 seconds behind Valverde and Usov. As mentioned, Castaño had to let go of his leader's jersey after just one day.
In the closing kilometers, Pereiro's group had pulled themselves back, and our captain sprinted over the line to get the same time as all the others! Well, except Valverde of course. The wind caused some casualties though. Three big favourites lost 2 minutes today: Lövkvist, Camaño and Euskaltel leader David Lopez.

I don't know how good Castaño was at the start of the carreer, so I don't know how much he's affected by the random potensial. But what amazes me, is that he managed to beat guys with 77TT like Lövkvist and Dockx, or LLS with 76TT. |

Somehow, both Cyanide an PCM.Daily keep forgetting that Carlos Castaño hasn't done anything remarkable since 2007, so he probably started with something like 73 MO, 72 VAL and high 60's-70 on TT. In my career with Caisse in this same game (PCM.Daily 2010 v.1) he made a similar improvement... But certainly he didn't win any Vuelta TT's . He must have started the race in top shape, because the startlist ain't that horrible...
And bad luck on this last stage... let's hope that Valverde ends up cracking at some time due to his REC stat...

Hm, I checked the original DB, and he starts with 74MO and 73TT. So no huge improvement then.

07.09.2010: Vuelta a España
Stage 10
Salamanca - Leon: 217.0km
Tactics meeting
Since yesterday, the Vuelta caravan has moved North from Andalucia to Salamanca in the North-Western part of Spain. Today's stage is also flat, but the wind is even stronger than yesterday. This will lead to some nervous racing.
To keep things under control, we put our team on the front early. We didn't put much pressure on, but were just riding to keep our important riders out of trouble.
We couldn't go on like this forever though, and with 25km remaining, the race had completely disintegrated! Echelons were everywhere. The Discovery echelon was quite near the front end of the race, but Valverde was even further ahead!
Under the 10km banner, he had even ridden away on his own, and was leading. Behind him was a select group consisting of Castaño, Lövkvist, Camaño and Andalucia duo Tondo & Vicioso. The Discovery echelon was 1 minute further behind! We would probably lose time today.
Approaching the red kite, Castaño and Lövkvist were closing in on race leader Valverde.
Lövkvist powered past a tired Valverde to take the stage win! Castaño takes back the red jersey because of bonifications for his 2nd place.
A tremendous effort from our guys saw us wipe out the deficit to the Camaño/Tondo group. Valverde records a gap of 28 seconds though.
LL Sanchez, 3rd before the stage, lost a lot of time together with the rest of the Caisse team after they had worked their socks off for Valverde. Counting bonus seconds, Valverde has gained almost one-and-a-half minute on Pereiro on these two flat windy stages. The GC top ten is starting to look like a real Grand Tour leaderboard, and we haven't even had a mountain stage yet. That will change after the rest day tomorrow though: The road will start going upwards!

09.09.2010: Vuelta a España
Stage 11
Ponferrada - Puerto de Pajares: 196.0km
Tactics meeting
We've had the first rest day, and now begins the real hardships of the Vuelta. Today's climb to Puerto de Pajares is just a warm-up for tomorrow's ascent of the Angliru, but this stage will likely see some altercations in the overall standings as well. There are some really steep sections on the last climb. It'll be interesting to see if Castaño can keep his red jersey.
We sent Egoi Martinez in a breakaway that included three Euskaltel riders, Txurruka being one of them. Martinez did a good job to win himself the KoM jersey.
Caisse d'Epargne obviously had some plans today. They put their team on the front and rode hard on the penultimate climb.
Martinez and what was left of the break began the last climb 2 minutes ahead of the peloton. A healthy lead, maybe Egoi could make it?
About halfway up the climb, Martinez was the only one left from the breakaway. He got company from Xavi Tondo, who had attacked out of the main bunch. 1'20 was their lead now, it didn't decrease drastically.
With 7km left, Valverde attacked the favourites group. Tondo and Martinez were still going well 1 minute ahead, so Valverde had his work cut out for him if he wanted to win the stage.
Nobody got the aggressive Spaniard's wheel. Pereiro, Kreuziger, Lövkvist and race leader Castaño rode their own tempo behind Valverde.
In the meantime, Tondo had cracked Martinez on the steepest ramps of the climb. No stage win for Egoi unfortunately.
Lövkvist couldn't handle the steep gradients either. 3km from the top, he was dropped by the Pereiro-led chasegroup that was behind Valverde.
2km left, and Kreuziger had also lost contact with Pereiro and Castaño. Castaño with the red jersey was still hanging in there, but he would lose it to Valverde, who was 35 seconds ahead.
Ahead of everyone was Xavi Tondo though. The Andalucia Cajasur climber won on the Pajares!
Valverde caught poor Martinez on the line, so our brave escapee must settle for 3rd.
Castaño won the sprint for 4th ahead of Pereiro, but it wasn't enough to prevent Valverde taking over the leader's jersey again. Pereiro moves into 4th overall, just behind Kreuziger, but he's already trailing Valverde by 3 minutes. Two pre-race favourites, Camaño and Euskaltel leader David Lopez, lost 3 minutes on this stage. That's the end of the warmup, now bring on the Alto del Angliru!
