Stage 3: Vichy - Craponne sur Arzon

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0007-2.jpg

Challenging course today and one best suited to the puncheurs.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0008-1.jpg
Nothing much happens until we get to the final climb of the day where Jelle Vanendert has a go.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0009-2.jpg
Discovery Channel is having a rough day. Jason Donald is struggling and has already lost his helpers who are slipping back. We'll have to stay in the peloton and hope that nobody else attacks and Vanendert is hauled in.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0010-2.jpg
Things look good for a little while, then Stijn Devolder attacks, with our own Mitchell Docker behind him trying to drive the peloton onwards.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0011-2.jpg
That starts a flurry of attacks with Menchov following Devolder, and here Gesink and Khatuntsev go.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0012-2.jpg
Now it is the turn of Gottfried.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0013-2.jpg
Then Schleck and Boasson Hagen.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0014-2.jpg
Finally, Nibali has a go.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0015-3.jpg
The peloton presses on, however, and soon many of the attackers are hauled in as is the case with Gesink and Menchov.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0016-1.jpg
Vanendert and Boasson Hagen, however, manage to stay away and are out front.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0017-3.jpg
51 seconds in back of them is a spread out group of Michalski, Schleck and Gottfried. The pack is another 39 seconds back.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0018-2.jpg
Less than 2km from the finish, Boasson Hagen gets away from Vanendert.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0019-3.jpg
At the same time, the pack captures Schleck and Gottfried.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0020-3.jpg
Boasson Hagen takes the stage, his second in a row. Donald struggles but manages to hang on with the pack and is still in good position. The strategy to avoid attacking and push the peloton as best we could seems to have been a good one.

Looks like Schleck will be tough to beat!

Btw, I think you posted two Menchov pictures and no Nibali picture in the prologue report.

Edit: Oh, Hagen Shock Is he good enough to keep up in the mountains?

Thanks, fixed. Hagen is pretty amazing in the PCM Spain database as he develops. However, I should be able to shake him in the mountains where is rating is 75. He is 78 on hills and 85 in the sprint.

Very solid second considering you were racing against Hagen. Almost a Merckx light. i think he will win it, sadly. Would love to see Donald take it Smile And about Andy's TT stat you can only really laugh about that. I doubt he will ever be that good in real life, considering he is so tiny, but who knows.

Stage 4: Le Puy - Privas

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0001-5.jpg

Another hilly stage made for the puncheurs.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0002-3.jpg
The break today included the polka dot jersey. With 22 km to go, the two remaining members of the break held a 3'12" lead.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0003-4.jpg
The pack was chasing hard and, again, Donald was struggling. He won't be able to respond to attacks for the second stage in a row.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0004-5.jpg
When the attack finally comes, it comes from Schleck.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0005-5.jpg
Hagen and Nibali follow.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0006-3.jpg
When the attacks have settled, Hagen is out in front with only 2km to go.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0007-3.jpg
Nibali follows in 2nd.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0008-2.jpg
Not far in front of the pack is a group with Vanendert, Michalski and Schleck.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0009-3.jpg
Nobody can touch Hagen, however, and he wins yet again. He has not established a pretty formidable lead.

2012: Danilo DiLuca (QuickStep)
2013: Vincenzo Nibali (Milram)

This is one of our sponsors' goals this season, so we will be going all out. Humberto Amilcar will be our main man but Cadel Evans is in great shape so can pick up any slack if necessary.

It is a tough field. Alberto Contador must be the favorite after his Tour of California performance. Defending Tour de France champion, Thomas Dekker, is here. Mollema, Zanasca, Kohl, Tatulyan, Rohregger, Garcia, Mitodorov and Soler are all ones to watch as well.

Flattish stage today.

40km from the finish, Ballan and Rovny try an attack. Fat chance of it succeeding.

It comes down to a mass sprint with Unibet having good position.

Satisfying to see that Zhou Sui is not faring much better on another team Smile Hopefully you can hold on to top 10 with Donald, although that may be hard. Winning Tirreno-Adriatico also might be a tough order, but let's see what happens Smile I would love to see Amilcar win.

Stage 5: Privas - Carpentras

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0001-6.jpg

Today we go up Ventoux, but given a long downhill to the finish and Hagen's current form, I'm not hopeful we'll be able to gain time on him.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0002-4.jpg
As we hit Mont Ventoux, Tony Martin and Gastauer decide to attack. It is too early and they won't get anywhere.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0003-5.jpg
14km from the peak, the real attacks come. Surprisingly enough, it is Hagen who starts them. He must be feeling really confident. Gesink and Nibali follow him.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0004-6.jpg
Donald follows Gentizon and the unlikely Nolf. We also decide to send Mitchell Docker, who has been riding well, to give Donald a hand.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0005-6.jpg
As the dust settles, Donald has done quite well as has Docker. They are up front with Gesink.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0006-4.jpg
1'23" back is a group that is a mix of some of the days' break and some attackers. Here we have: Cardoso, Duarte, Hagen, Denfli, Schleck, Nibali and Vandendert. What is left of the main pack is another minute back.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0007-4.jpg
Gesink and co. cross the peak with a 1'40" lead now. Can they hold it through the downhill?

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0008-3.jpg
As the road flattens out, Docker is dropped.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0009-4.jpg
Gesink is strong today, and Donald is not yet at full fitness. He can't keep up.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0010-3.jpg
The Hagen group is coming fast. It seems likely that Donald will be caught in the sprint.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0012-3.jpg
Gesink won't be. He finishes off a powerful ride by crossing the line all alone.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0014-3.jpg
Donald is indeed caught near the line. The race finishes none too soon for him as he cracks just as he crosses the line. He and Docker will move up the standings, however.

Getting beyond 7th place is looking pretty tough at this point. There is a mountain TT still at Paris-Nice where Donald should do well, so I suspect he'll be able to hold the top 10 spot.

We'll see at Tirreno-Adriatico. There is only one mountain stage plus the time trial this year, those are the stages where it will be won.

Stage 2: Viterbe - Terni

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0015-1.jpg

Sprint stage today with a little uphill near the finish which could let a guy like Haussler go for it.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0016.jpg
Haussler goes after the sprint points near the finish and tries to keep on going. It doesn't work.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0017.jpg
He tries attacking up the last little hill. That doesn't work either.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0018.jpg
What it does do, however, is position him near the front of the sprint at the start. The trains seem to have been a bit screwed up by the peloton reaction to his attack.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0019-1.jpg
As Haussler chases Zhou Sui, Alex Rasmussen begins to make a move.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0020-1.jpg
There will be no catching Sui. But who will come 2nd?

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0021.jpg
Rasmussen pips Haussler at the line. Not a bad result by Haussler, however, considering he is currently depressed and on 78 form.

Very good racing by Haussler. too bad he is depressed. Does not look promising for Milan San Remo unless you can turn it around quickly. But we believe in Donald for a top 10 Grin The guy in the car just needs to motivate him and push him along in the TT Smile

Stage 6: Apt - Sisteron

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0001-7.jpg

Tough to predict what might happen on a stage like today.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0002-5.jpg
We'll get a sprint finish, but not many sprinters have actually survived the hills or have legs for the sprint. Farrar has, however, and has decent position.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0003-6.jpg
Farrar can't keep up with Van Avermaet, however, who is running away with it while Hagen makes his move.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0004-7.jpg
Van Avermaet takes it, it will be close for 2nd though.

Stage 3: Rieti - Ascoli Pineco

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0006-3.jpg

This is always a challenging stage. Most of the stage is flat, so going with a mountain set-up can cost you at the end of the race. On the other hand, if the peloton chases any dangerous breaks up the climb of the day, then many of the sprinters will get dropped or tired out at the least.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0008-3.jpg
Unfortunately, today the climb was hard work. Many sprinters were dropped as was Haussler. Coming out of the final sprint for points of the day, Zhou Sui decides to try and go on his own.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0007-1.jpg
While Haussler was dropped, Van Heerden was not. However his legs were so tired that he wiped out while trying to get into a sprint train during the chase of Sui. He took a number of other cyclists down with him.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0009-1.jpg
Sui has worked hard to keep a lead, so hard that he can't sprint when the trains begin sprinting.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0010-2.jpg
With the peloton on top of him, Sui finally starts to try and sprint. He has nothing in the tank, however.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0011-2.jpg
In a sign of how much this stage has done to wipe out the sprinters, it is Yuri Trofimov who blows by Sui, followed by Mortensen.

Stage 7: Dignes - Mandelieu Grand Duc

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0013-3.jpg

This stage should see some pretty good action.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0015-4.jpg
Gutierrez is the first to attack which he does on the second to last climb. He is followed by Nolf and Gottfriend.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0016-2.jpg
On the last climb of the day, Hagen opens the major attacks. He is followed by Nibali and Gesink.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0017-4.jpg
Donald, Docker and Schleck counter.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0018-3.jpg
Donald looks really horrible today. He is struggling big time and looks like he'll lose a lot of time. Docker is not doing too much better.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0019-4.jpg
Hagen, on the other hand, is not struggling. He is leading the charge with 2 km to go.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0020-4.jpg

Can I see Boasson Hagen's stats?

Nice by Farrar, very solids sprint from him. Too bad about Haussler. Had he stayed in the pack over the mountain, maybe he could've done something. Donald.... Well, that was that Paris - Nice. Not a great start to the season, if I have to be honest Sad I just hope you will do better in Tirreno - Adriatico.

Stage 4: Chieti - Passo Lanciano

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0021-1.jpg

Today's stage will separate the men from the boys. Evans is in top condition, whereas Amilcar is not quite where we would like him (clearly I am rusty with training) so Evans could be the main guy today.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0022.jpg
Ignatiev is, surprisingly, the first guy to attack up the final climb. He goes 11km from the finish. We send Evans after him to test whether this is serious. A number of non-threats attack as well.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0023.jpg
When Contador goes, so does Amilcar.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0025.jpg
When the attacks are done and dusted, it is a group of 6 at the front: Contador, Evans, Gurendez, Ignatiev, Amilcar and Ricco.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0026.jpg
38 seconds back, we have Soler, Canalia and Trofimov.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0027.jpg
3.5km from the top, Contador launches a second attack. We can't match him but we do think we can ride back to him.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0029-2.jpg
Turns out we are wrong. To make matters worse, we make a classic beginners mistake: poor energy management. Both Evans and Amilcar have one food energy left and we fail to use it. As a result, they go into the sprint at a lower energy level than they could be at. They can't keep up with Contador and Ricco.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/tirreno/PCM0030-1.jpg
Contador crosses the line first, followed by Ricco. With only two flat stages, then the time trial left, our amateur mistake could cost us. Making up 22-34 seconds on Contador in the ITT will be tough.

Afraid my print screen on the team pages doesn't seem to be working. I've posted it before, however, if you scroll back to the introduction to last year's Giro or Tour (don't recall which). Won't have changed much.
