If you skimp on tyres, expect punctures. Bontragers and Schwalbes are wank. Get some proper tyres. Like £35+ for one. Not £20.
And if you keep getting punctures, you're;
a) too fat
b) riding in the gutter
c) purposely riding over nails in the road

I weigh 63kg so probably not that
Both times have been Middle of the road and changing from were new tarmac has been put down.
And Schwalbe Ultremos are £35

I get Punctures a lot on my Bontrager tyres, and am probably going to buy some Schwalbes. Perhaps something is stuck in the tyre wall - that's what happened to me.
Had a look nothing really in there.:/

Get Continental tyres. They won every clincher test i read in the last years and i only had 3 punctures in more than 10.000km. And they fit (at least) on my Ksyrium wheels.

If you are regularly getting punctures, then either you have some very bad luck, or need new tires. I'd recommend a set of continentals, GP 4000's work well, especially for those wheels. They are a good, all round tire that won't wear out too quick

I have continental tyres on my bike, their brilliant, corner well and I very rarely have a puncture. touch wood
Guessing i will be buying some contientals next then are the GP 4000's the best one out there or is there anything better?

I don't know about the punctures, but I could also remove some tyres with my hands when I had a flat, with Michelin (not sure the model, but it were the first green and black striped ones, in 1998 or something). Back then I felt more reassured when I bought (other) tyres that were already round-shaped, not folded in a weird manner, but nowadays all tyres are folded on the shelves, so that's not a criteria any more. I thought rims' width was standard though.
I haven't been able to do it before i got these so i found it quite strange that i was able to and I'm not sure there might be a standered width but the do seem quite big. |

GP4000's are £37ish from Wiggle for British Cycling members. The Bontragers were on the bike when I got it, and I weigh 54kg. So probably not a weight issue. |

I dont know much about them, I got the for £50 for the pair out of my local bike shop, but I had cheap tyres on before that and never really had punctures. I hated the cheap tyres, they wear quicker too. I don't weigh much either 61kg I was last time I weighed myself, I think.

I can confirm that Bontrager tyres are rubbish.
I've had 2 pinch punctures in about 200 miles of riding. They came with the Trek I bought and look good, but are so thin that they are next to useless. I will be changing them to something more substantial, like some Continentals. |

i just have to get this out here i participated in a race where everybody is allowed to race(so you dont need any license or something like that - i dont know the english term for those races): the race is called velothon, takes place in berlin and on the distance i raced there were nearly 5000 participants
I finished the 62k course with an average of 39.7 km/h and in the top 300(which is pretty good for me although 300 may not sound that good ) i was pretty satisfied with myself and it really was a lot of fun
although this wasnt my first race i think it never felt this good/easy - probably because i only once finished that high up before

I haven't started racing yet, mainly due to things getting in the way, and then exams. However, I've done some longer rides and it feels a lot easier, although I need to tighten my saddle bolt as every time I get out of the saddle, my saddle takes a nose dive. |

You're right. It's even worse when you live on the side of a hill. |

well good training for your legs going up the hill while being out of the saddle
although that s probably only fun if the hill isnt too long and steep - we probably have a different definition of "hill" though as here every bigger bridge is a hill, because its quite flat around here |

Sections at 18% on the worst, 11% is the worst with 4 or 5% average on most. |

Shame you couldn't ride a tockwith before it got closed down was a nice track out there, There is a replacement at the moment not sure how far away you are though in Scunthorpe there is two handicap races every tuseday. |

Tockwith is about 15 minutes away by car, Scunthorpe is about two hours. |

All being well I'll finally have my first race tomorrow, in Lancaster - Saltaire to be precise. I better do well, after I bought a new pump, a new jersey, a bottle holder and a bottle. It's only an hour and a quarter as well, plus the race is at half six so I should be home by nine. |

So the race season is starting up (at least where I am). Are there any other racers around to generate some discussion?

I'm avoiding racing for now, due to finishing last in every race I've done. I just don't do short flat races, which is a problem in Britain. Maybe next season after more training. |
