I will stand by him then Wink

Shonak
Yeah, I'm just too lazy to edit him out of the game. He's convicted doper in story, game and in IRL and thereby dismissed from Euskaltel - Euskadi. No socio can sponsor him since he doesn't belong to the team anymore. Sorry sutty.

Vuelta a España, August 2013

So there we go. We took our best to collect all our remaining energy after a tough campaign so far. We will need it. This year’s edition of the Vuelta is promising once more to be an exciting battle to be fought out.
The race of Spain is obviously important, regardless of Euskaltel – Euskadi’s proud independent spirit. Countless stage wins and precious memories have been made during the years since Euskaltel – Euskadi and Vuelta a Espana belong together. The team is eager to once more cause celebrations along the road when the orange crush punches up the infamous climbs.

The Vuelta has been founded 1935 and is generally considered to be the third most important stage race of the year. Regardless of the fact that it may stand here and there in the shadows of le Tour and the Giro, the Vuelta has been one of the most enjoyable races in the past centuries to watch. While it may suffered a bit of an identity problem at some point, the trend to short, punchy and incredible bumpy roads causes massive fan interest and praise from the viewers. Besides that, we believe it brings out the identity of Spain even better.

Although the race isn’t particularly suited for sprinters, the line-up sees surprisingly the finest that there are: Mark Cavendish, Andre Greipel, Marcel Kittel and Peter Sagan are ready to fight it out for the few stages that are possible for bunch sprints. Since there are so few it’s even more surprising that the world-class of sprinters decided to start here, however it will make the bunch sprints just that more fought out.

For the General Classification, the list of big names continues. Chris Froome (SKY), winner of this year’s Tour de France, aims for the double with assistance from Sergio Henao, who might get a free-role. Alejandro Valverde (MOV), 4th at le Tour and 2nd at the World Tour rankings right now, will be one of his toughest opponents alongside Carlos Betancur (ALM), Daniel Moreno (KAT), Diego Ulissi (LAM) and Euskaltel – Euskadi trio Mikel Nieve, Samu Sánchez and Igor Antón.

Alongside our three captains, who all go into this race with different preparations so far, is youngster Mikel Landa, Giro’s King of the Mountain Gorka Verdugo, Jorge Azanza, who impressed at le Tour, Egoi Martínez (third at this year’s Tirreno – Adriatico), Ruben Pérez and J.J. Oroz. So it’s quite a mixed line-up, some of them already have ridden a Grand Tour this year. Still, we come into this race to celebrate victories and thus the guys are prepared, equipped and ready for great things to happen.

Stage 1
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/stages%202013/eus_0100_zpsb530403e.jpg
The first stage sees a 27 kilometers Team Time Trial. The race goes by as expected. Or no, wait it doesn’t. Although Team SKY takes a clear win ahead of Garmin-Sharp and Movistar, a real surprise comes in 5th. Euskaltel – Euskadi is only 22 seconds behind. Good start for us, for once!

Stage 2
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/stages%202013/eus_0101_zps1af4d598.jpg
The second stage is nothing for the likes of Cavendish, as we already tackle the mountains. This is not the Tour de France, this is the Vuelta. And god damn it, we are motivated to make it worth it. The climb up to Alto Do Monte Da Groba is the first of many ahead of us.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1200_49_22-Greenshot_zps3a0af4e4.jpg

The Vuelta is never known for making its stages easy to begin with. Here we can see Landa trying his luck early on, while the peloton has still not decided what do really. But alas his attempt is fruitless as the peloton draws him in quick.

Spoiler
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1200_55_36-Greenshot_zpsc8b99e64.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1200_57_45-Greenshot_zpsbd337676.jpg

Later on, Landa tries it once more at the Alto de San Cosme. We know he has good legs and he has shown his fighting spirit quite often. The entire campaign this year has been plastered with attacks by this young rider and clearly he shows, why should the Vuelta be any different? On the climb he later drops De Greef and Clarke and makes ready to join Brambilla (OPQ) and Dyachenko (AST). Still, the gap is merely seconds to the peloton.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1200_59_35-Greenshot_zps5f7190da.jpg

Up on top, Luis Leon Sánchez gets the points by a late attack. Landa is happy to let him take them, and instead wants to catch with him again. Back in the peloton, things are still not getting calm as Morkov (TST) attacks.

Spoiler
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_02_58-Greenshot_zps96a37ff6.jpg

Without the help of Sánchez (BEL), Landa doesn’t stand once more much chance against the peloton. I tell Katu that it’s probably best to just let it rest for now, and the team manager agrees. Even the basque fans, who are already waving the ikurrinas at this rather small climb, are any help here. However as if the peloton wants to completely mess with our heads a group of Ulissi (LAM), Sánchez (BEL), Albasini (OGE), Ballan (BMC), Pondi (VIN), Piedra (CJR) and Fränk Schleck(!), who returns out from his suspension to racing, forms itself and easily gets a lead on the peloton… So thanks a lot once more, peloton.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_07_44-Greenshot_zpse5317a09.jpg

This is not the peloton being paced by FDJ. No, this is a huge second group. Roughly 120 (and thus 2/3 of the peloton) are at a disadvantage when a seemingly vital split in the peloton occurs over one of the many hills. And the peloton isn’t ready to drop the pace over the many curves and ups-and-downs of the route. This is pure Vuelta as we have come to know and appreciate it.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_09_18-Greenshot_zps7680628e.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_12_26-Greenshot_zpsbde2d8b7.jpg

The pace doesn’t decrease over the next kilometers and even here are getting riders dropped when their actual duty is just to get some bottles up their team captains. Clearly the form isn’t right for many riders, because there’s hardly any wind. Except for Oroz, all Euskaltel – Euskadi riders are in the peloton, although Egoi Martínez struggled for quite a bit.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_14_21-Greenshot_zps475f05c1.jpg

It’s a day where the breakaway never really stood any chance. 30 kilometers are still left to race and they are caught. The mountain hasn’t even started yet…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_18_12-Greenshot_zpsfc88e92a.jpg

The peloton is packed as they head into the final climb of today, roughly 11 kilometers to the top. The orange boys are gearing up in the first rows and loading through for their attacks.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_19_46-Greenshot_zpsa80e3a5f.jpg

Igor Antón is one of the first to attack, while World Champion Gilbert (BMC) is alone upfront after having dropped Losada (KAT) earlier on.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_20_45-Greenshot_zps11308214.jpg

Daniel Moreno’s attack is followed by... no one. Movistar paces while our boys sit in the back.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_22_29-Greenshot_zps092d4c31.jpg

Henao works for his captain and drastically increases the pace when the climb hits the 10 %. In a matter of seconds the group falls apart, Nieve and Sánchez just manage to hang in there.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_23_59-Greenshot_zps219a2192.jpg

Antón and Sánchez prove that their form isn’t there best yet with many races already in their legs and not doing enough in the build-up. Mikel Nieve who skipped large parts of the early season can now prove his talent once more by being the only Euskaltel rider who may be able to hang on. We also see that Froome (#11 on the back) struggles.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_25_37-Greenshot_zps6eb7fffe.jpg

Sagan and Valverde push to reel in Gilbert, but the World Champion just rides his own race upfront. With only 3 kilometers left, it’s looks certain that he takes the stage win. Or maybe not? Antón and Sánchez profit from the decreased speed afterwards and get back into the group for good.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_26_54-Greenshot_zps33fda8f9.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_28_00-Greenshot_zps6af4f178.jpg

Gilbert loses large amounts of time when the guys start to sprint. Valverde and Betancur look particularly dangerous. And Betancur looks like Gilbert with that jersey, except he isn’t.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Gora%20Euskadi/08_2013/2014-01-1201_28_48-Greenshot_zps5966d332.jpg

Gilbert takes the stage win as Valverde, Henao and Betancur started hard and fast but couldn’t keep their sprint. Still, they gain much time on their rivals. Nieve is the best Euskaltel – Euskadi rider coming in 8th.

Ian Butler
What a strong startlist Shock

And a nice start by the World Champion.

sutty68
The guys rode a good team time trial on stage 1 and Nieve put in a good ride on stage 2 to make the Gc look pretty cool for the boys in Orange Smile

welker3257
Hopefully the the boys can retain their spots in the top 10 Smile

@Ian Butler: Gilbert certainly enjoys a decent season. And he looks to come in great shape for the Worlds. Shock

@sutty: Yeah, so far there's some orange love in the Top 10 to be felt. Cool

@welker3257: It looks good but we'll see how it comes. Smile

Nice start in Spain. Wait a second....your best rider is....my rider!!! Grin. Gora Mikel!!!!

The Rider
A great idea in the socio concept. Wink I would join, but I won't, as I reckon the team may become too overpowered eventually. Wink

I thought the team would have a really good chance of finishing high up in GC at the Vuelta but that is one strong startlist!
