29.08.2010: Vuelta a España
Stage 1
Pucol - Playa de Alboraia: 15.0km
Tactics meeting
The Vuelta kicks off with what's more of a time trial than a prologue. It's completely flat, so being a good climber won't help Pereiro. Kreuziger would normally be our best bet for this stage, but he's not completely up to speed yet.
Huge race favourite Alejandro Valverde was the first to set off, but his time wasn't great. It was beaten by a lot of riders who came after him. Not really a solid start for last year's ProTour winner.
Fuji captain Iker Camaño lived up to his leader role by recording the provisional best time, catching his minute man Reynes in the process.
Danish powerhouse Lars Bak sliced 8 seconds off Camaño's lead. Bak has been good this season, performing strongly in the Giro d'Italia time trials as well.
22 year old Gert Dockx stirred up quite a surprise by knocking Bak off the top spot at the finish. The lead with a 7 second margin for the young Belgian.
Pereiro kicked off his Vuelta campaign in strong fashion, clocking in 19 seconds behind Dockx. This would eventually place Oscar 6th on the day.
The first ever red jersey goes to Caisse lieutenant LL Sanchez. Valverde's right hand man made good use of his time trial power to overtake Dockx by 4 seconds and hold off a late challenge by Veloso, who started right after Sanchez.

That's the charming thing about random potensial. I've come so far in the carreer that it's starting to make a difference.
Still, my favourite random talent is Gaia from the Giro. |

Well, at least his form will decrease a bit on the last mountain stages and the time trial... but maybe Pereiro is in the same situation |

30.08.2010: Vuelta a España
Stage 2
Pucol - Valencia: 145.0km
Tactics meeting
Already on the second stage, the Vuelta moves into the hills, and more is to come during the next few days. Today's uphill finish is perfect for Peter Velits, and we want to kickstart our quest for stage wins today.
After the first few hills, Xacobeo's Garcia Dapena was the only one left from the early breakaway.
Towards the last classified mountain sprint, there was a lot of attacking going on in the peloton.
At the top, 18 km from the finish, a rather large group had separated from the peloton. We had all of Pereiro, Velits, Kreuziger and Rubiera here, and also race leader Sanchez had moved clear. Importantly, no Valverde or Lövkvist was in this break!
Onto the last hill towards the finish, Garcia Dapena was still out in front. It was looking like a good stage win for the Galicians! Could Velits' group catch him?
40 sec behind the lone escapee, ProTour leader Kreuziger set Velits up for an attack! The red jersey was paying attention.
Under the red kite, Velits moved out of Kreuziger's wheel, but Garcia Dapena still had a few meters on the chasers! Velits had to produce some serious speed here!
The distance was too much, as Garcia Dapena brought home the stage win! Velits nicked 2nd ahead of LL Sanchez, and got the same time as the winner.
Xacobeo's Herrero led the third group (with Valverde) across to get the same time as Pereiro and Velits' group. Very disappointing to not get any seconds on Valverde, because I mean there was a gap. The race organizers didn't agree though.

Those kinda stages where no gap is given, when there's a clear gap just peeves me right off. Bad luck on both 2nd (rather than a win) and no gap.

31.08.2010: Vuelta a España
Stage 3
Alcoi - Murcia: 153.0km
Tactics meeting
It's a windy stage near the South-Eastern coast, leading into Murcia. More importantly, it's a perfect Velits stage yet again! We'll keep things tight until the last hill, so that our Slovakian has no breakaway in front when he makes his move. We've learned from yesterday.
At the lower slopes of the hill, the break was duly caught. We got some unexpected help from Rabobank, who were probably riding for Paul Martens.
Just as the last remains of the early breakaway were swept up, Kreuziger once again launched Peter Velits! This time we wanted to get it right!
Everything according to plan so far! Velits made himself a nice gap over the top. Marcato of Vacansoleil was the closest chaser, with the Valverde-led peloton 30 sec behind. Velits needed to hold on for 10 km.
It turned out Velits couldn't do it solo. Valverde and Castaño made the jump from the chasing pack, while Marcato also joined to make it four out in front.
Just behind, Kreuziger laid down the hammer to keep Pereiro close to Valverde. It was a fine balance, because we didn't want to spoil Velits' chances either.
With Marcato left in the wake, Velits had a superb position approaching the line!
When Valverde made his move, Velits countered! He was in the lead and heading for his first Grand Tour stage win!
But that wasn't to be. Valverde found something special to catch Velits, and the Spaniard threw his bike over the line to claim the win. Extremely disappointing!
Veloso and Ciolek, who had survived the hill, led the peloton across to get the same time as Valverde, Velits & Castaño. The organizers still don't like gaps, but today it was to our advantage.

No, I'm using the pre-Tour version of the PCM.daily 2009 DB, and this was how it was set there. I've tweaked some other riders (e.g. Wiggins), but not Valverde

01.09.2010: Vuelta a España
Stage 4
Murcia - Benidorm: 179.0km
Tactics meeting
It's time for Ciolek show! A pan flat stage is on today's program, and Ciolek is obviously in good shape as he survived the last hill yesterday. The Discovery train should be steaming away towards the finish today.
Garmin was helping out with the chasing. They obviously fancy Pagliarini's chances. Bazayev was their surprise sprinter during the first half of the season, maybe Brazilian Luciano Pagliarini will be the same for the latter parts?
With Vaitkus messing up his positioning, Velits had to step into our train. We couldn't organize it exactly as we wanted, so 4km from the line, it was Eisel ahead of Velits and Ciolek. Pagliarini was tucked in behind our sprinter.
On the run-in, Velits positioned Ciolek well, but there wasn't much room for Ciolek to come around. Eisel was disrupting the Vacansoleil lead-out.
Ciolek's lack of space didn't matter, Velits did it all on his own! An amazing one-two for us! When we finally got our first stage win, we did it in style. Bonifications even gives Velits the red leader's jersey!
Roman Kreuziger is still lacking form, as he finished as the last man in the peloton. Luckily, he didn't lose time.

02.09.2010: Vuelta a España
Stage 5
Malaga - Granada: 173.0km
Tactics meeting
Another lumpy stage, which is classified as hilly. Judging by our results over the past few days, we're best served with a bunch sprint. Ciolek is in shape, and overall leader Velits has shown that he can sprint well, so we look to keep things controlled today.
After a lot of early attacking, Paul Martens was the only one allowed to go from the pack.
He stayed out there for a long time, but under the 5km mark, the peloton was breathing down the German's neck. We were doing the main bulk of the chasing.
Martens was finally brought back under the red kite. Vaitkus took the responsibility of leading out Ciolek, as Eisel was wiped out by all the hills. A slightly tired Velits latched on to the Xacobeo train.
The Xacobeo guys went well today, and were ahead of Gerald Ciolek!
David Herrero brings home Xacobeo's second stage win! The Spaniard had a great lead-out, but Ciolek might have taken it if the sprint wasn't uphill. I'm getting a bit tired of 2nd places by now. Before yesterday's win, we were 2nd in the two previous stages.

Great job getting the red jersey with Velits. With that and a stage win, its already been a very successful Vuelta. |
