Tour of California
Stage 4
The tour can be won between this stage here today and the ITT in Stage 6. This is the most hilly stage with the final climb present the best opportunity of the whole race for an attack. Mortensen is a huge risk and will be able to keep up in the hills so our race strategy will be to push the peloton and tire him out such that if Jason has the chance to launch an attack on the final climb, Mortensen won't be able to follow.
The days break consists of 5 riders including Chris Sutton. Given Discovery Channel's goal of pushing the peloton hard as we hit the hills, the break will have no chance. As we hit the second climb; Monfort, Popo and Boom move forward to push the pace.
The peloton is moving at a torrid pace now and it seems to be having the desired effect as racers begin falling off the back.
As we move towards the final climb of the day, Andy moves forward to push the pace up the climb even harder.
The peloton is being stretched thin, but where is Mortensen? He's still there but falling back and well away from Jason.
3 km from the top, Jason is feeling good and launches his attack.
The pack is clearly worn down and only Tony Martin can try to follow but can't reach Jason. Great work from Andy, Popo and Monfort.
As Jason crosses the "peak", he has a 38 second lead on Martin and a 1'39" lead on the peloton. Now we only have to make sure Jason doesn't tire out on the way down as he is already at two red bars.
Martin sets a torrid pace down the hill while Jason is cautious and the two come back together as we hit the flats. This is a bit unfortunate and means Jason absolutely must win the sprint such that he at least widens his lead a bit over Martin via bonus time. Jason wisely takes Martin's wheel, hoping he is tired out from the chase and can be easily beaten in the sprint.
1 km from the line and Jason makes his move.
As they near the line, Jason looks like he might have it.
Yes, great stage victory! No time to celebrate as he passes the line. The peloton comes through 2'05" seconds later. This is now a two man race with Jason holding a 19 second advantage over Martin.
I missed the export again (need to get better at this) but printed out the GC prior to the next stage. Standings below:

Talking about scouting riders, I was playing my Hearts (don't ask) career in Fifa 08 today. I signed a scouted defender who turned out to be a 79, which is the second highest scouted player I've ever found (I found a english goalie once who was an 82). His name was K.Dickerson, nothing strange about that right.....well wrong, he was Spanish and his first name (I don't remember it exactly) was Croatian. I really am starting to be impressed with the name generation in PCM's scouting system.
Used to get the same kind of things in Championship Manager (before it became FM). All kinds of crazy combinations of name over time. Was pretty funny sometimes. |

Tour of California
Stage 5: Seaside - San Luis Obispo
Slightly hilly stage. Not particularly dangerous but with a bit of an uphill finish which provides some opportunity for time gaps. Jason will have to be aware and ready for anything.
12 riders try for the break but are split across 4 groups. Eventually 10 come together including some riders with 2 minutes of Jason in the standings. We send the boys forward to chase them down and are joined by Predictor Lotto. Jason sits calmly just behind.
The break is caught 12 km from the finish line. During the course of the chase, may sprinters were dropped (including Napolitano). Given the uphill finish, Farrar looks to grab the wheel of a fighter with decent sprinting skills. Ignatiev fits the bill.
As we move towards the sprint, it looks like positioning is once again a problem for Farrar. In addition, as a result of the uphill finish he is looking a bit ragged. Not Farrar's day yet again.
Meanwhile, Jason has decided to take up Martin's wheel to make absolutely certain there is no chance of a time gap.
At the front, it is turning into a battle between Gerolsteiner and QuickStep with two sprinters from each team leading the charge (Gilbert and Wegmann for Gerolsteiner and Brambilla and Ponzi for QuickStep).
Gerolsteiner will get the better of this battle, finishing 1-2 with Gilbert on top. Good ride by the Gerolsteiner boys. Farrar finishes a distant 34th. This is turning into a nightmare tour for him.

Tour of California
Stage 6: Solvang ITT
Final battle between Jason and Martin today to decide the winner of the tour. Martin has a poor time trial in the first stage so we hope the same continues today. Markus Reich is in good form and will be trying to win the day.
Melchior Hilbers comes through early on with the first strong time of the day: 34'14". How long will it hold?
Quite a long while as 57 spots later, Markus Reich hits the road. He is feeling very good today at blows through the first checkpoint 34 seconds ahead of Hilbers time.
Markus streaks through the downhill section and catches Martinez ahead of him en route to an impressive 33'16", 58 seconds faster than Hilber.
First man with a chance to match Markus is Cancellara. However, at the first checkpoint he is 15 seconds behind Markus' time. He loses more time on the downhill and will finish 3rd (+22).
Fielder is right behind Cancellara and is one second slower. He'll finish 4th (+23).
Vladimir Gusev will take 11th (+57).
Hokkanen hits the road and comes in 9th (+51).
Andy Schleck can challenge for a podium spot if he comes through with a great time. He'll only take 10th though (+54).
Ignatiev is the last guy who looks to have a real chance to top Markus. He can't, though, and takes 8th place (+48).
Mortensen posts a decent time as a warm-up to the Martin vs Donald show. 6th place (+44).
Now time for Martin. He is looking very strong today and posts an extremely good time and the first checkpoint, only 12 seconds behind Markus. He continues to charge hard on the downhill, losing only a bit of time and finishing an impressive 22 seconds behind Markus.
Jason hits the road with a 19 second cushion to protect. On paper he is the better time trialist and showed it in the opening stage. He is looking a bit ragged on the climb, however. The team car tells him he is over 20 seconds behind Martin already so he picks up the pace. He'll go over the top with a pretty good time, only 5 seconds behind Martin. As in Stage 4, however, on the downhill Martin looks the better man. Jason is losing time, it is only a qustion of how much. He tries to push himself, but he doesn't quite have it today. He drags himself over the line 47 seconds behind Markus' time, having lost large chunks of time on the downhill. The final results are posted and Jason has lost 15 seconds to Martin and falls to 2nd place, 6 seconds behind.
Unforunately, Markus' fantastic stage win has been overshadowed by the disappointment of losing the yellow jersey to Martin. Hats off to Martin, though. He managed to close a 38 second time gap to Jason on stage 4 and he rode an impressive time trial today. He deserves yellow.
Once again, missed the export button. Overall standings are as follows:

Tour of California
STage 7: Santa Barbara - Santa Clarita
Very small chance at best to top Martin here as the second half of the stage is relatively flat. Still, Jason will give it his best shot as he has nothing to lose given a large lead over 3rd place. It is a very windy day so there might be a chance to split the peloton if we remain alert.
The days break has 11 members, including old man George Hincapie. With 37 km to go in the stage, the break holds a 5 minute lead. Can they go all the way? What a great story it would be if Hincapie could get a stage win for old times sake.
Alas, Big George runs out of gas and falls off the pace.
No matter as Discovery Channel has lead a hard charge to catch the break. With 6 km to go, only two members of the break remain uncaught. They have a 1 minute lead but are fading fast. With some minor uphill climbs coming, this is Jason's only chance and he attacks. We know Jason has almost no chance but even if he doesn't establish a time gap but somehow grabs one of the top 3 spots, the time bonus will be enough to move him into 1st.
It is a strong attack and he quickly catches the break, but the peloton is still right behind.
For once, Tyler Farrar has managed to get good position for the sprint and is coming up fast on Jason, taking the wheel of Patrick Bertin.
The sprinters are about to catch Jason. His last hope is a slight uphill coming up very shortly.
Much to my pleasant surprise, the slight uphill slows down many of the sprinters. Rovria, Farrar and Bertin pass by but this gives Jason a chance to try and grab Tyler's wheel and something to reach for as he digs deep.
Closing in on the line, Jason has actually managed to pull even with Bertin! Can he do it? 3rd would be enough to take yellow.
As they cross the line, it is too close to tell. We wait for the officials decision. It comes in... and it is Bertin in 3rd. Disappointing, but what an incredible effort by Jason to almost take yellow. Rovira wins the stage and Tyler finally shows up by taking 2nd.
I actually managed to export the results this time. \o/ wahey!

Tour of California
Stage 8: Long Beach Criterium
Short, flat stage today. Last chance for Tyler Farrar to grab a win here. We may send Lars Boom in the break just to see what happens and to avoid having to work in the chase.
The days break goes, and it does include Boom along with 10 others.
With 68 km to go, the lead is 6'30" and the pack is not doing much to pull the break back in. Seeing a chance, the attacks start happening to push the pace.
However, the break is eventually caught and we'll have a sprint finish. Tyler is feeling very good today. However, he has managed to get himself in bad position (a running theme for him in this Tour).
He gets better position by switching to the Health Net train.
As the sprint gets in full swing, Tyler is in the mix.
As he goes to make his move, he gets boxed in by Mortensen.
Tyler can't manage to find a way through and he watches while Sylvain Chavanel wins the stage. Tyler gets 8th.
Tour is over. We came with the objective of taking home the win and the points jersey. We got neither so this is a bit of a disappointment. However, we did get two stage wins and 2nd and 6th overall, so it was not a total loss.
My success with the export button was short lived /o\. The final standings did not change from the end of Stage 7, nor did any of the jerseys. |

2007: Luca Mazzanti (Ceramica Panaria)
2008: Joaquim Rodriguez (Caisse d'Epargne)

Next race up is the Volta a la Communitat Valencia. This is a combined final tune up for Paris-Nice for riders like Andy Schleck. For others, it is the first tune up for the Tirrenco-Adriatico.
The course favors explosive hills specialists - those who can burst up the hill through strength and speed, and finish in the sprint. We are sending Ivan Rovny to the race as the team leader. While he is in typical early season condition, he has the kind of explosiveness needed to win a race like this. In case Ivan is not in best condition, Andy Schleck is here and is in good condition as he continues his Paris-Nice preparations. He is a potential contendor for the overall win.
The competition is tough: Edvald Boasson Hagen looks in good race shape now and this race is perfectly tailored to his skills. Jonay Perreiro from CSC is a real threat on the hills. Caisse d'Epargne's young Mexican rider, Elias Morca, has a good chance to win. Of course, veteran Damiano Cunego is always a threat in a race like this.

Volta a la Communitat Valencia
Stage 1: Torrevieja - Guadamar del Segura
Flat stage, definitely one for the sprinters. Expect Haussler and Boasson Hagen, along with possibly Steegmans to battle it out.
The days break consists of 6 and is easily caught by a Caisse led peloton. There will be a sprint, and as we line up, Haussler jumps on the Rabobank train right behind Boasson Hagen.
Haussler shows a lapse in concentration and allows Gavazzi to insert himself into the train between Haussler and Boasson Hagen.
As the sprint starts, Boasson Hagen looks strong while Haussler sits on Gavazzi.
Edvald looks very strong as he powers himself towards the finish.
Edvald gets the win. Meanwhile, Haussler moves to pass Gavazzi and will take a decent 2nd place.

Thanks! Should keep going for a while as I am enjoying it. Story writing makes more motivation for the game. |

Volta a la Communitat Valencia
Stage 2: Alcante - Xativa
We'll see today who are the real contenders for this race. Expect attacks up the final climb and a chase to the finish.
The days break consists of 11. Initially Rabo and Caisse control the pace. Eventually, we move forward to join the chase.
The break is caught and the peloton moves to the final climb. Kohl launches the first attack.
A number of riders counter. Rovny is having a bad day and can't muster an attack so Schleck has to go.
A large group of favorites come togther. In here are Schleck, Pereiro, Garate, Cunego, Chavanel, Vicioso, Boasson Hagen and Morca.
Not in the group, however, is Kohl. He has launched the most effective attack and goes over the peak alone.
It is a short downhill to the finish line and Kohl will stay ahead all the way for the win. Great ride by Kohl.
The remaining challengers finish in a mass sprint. Schleck manages to stay near the front and will finish 4th.

March Schedule
March is upon us and we are beginning to hit the heart of our racing season. This will be a busy month and includes our first sponsors goal, a win at Paris-Nice. We'll be counting on Andy Schleck to help us meet that goal. Jason Donald will be riding his last race until after the Tour de France when he saddles up for Tirreno-Adriatico.
Henrich Haussler will be our main guy at Milano-San Remo and our cobblestone team will start their warm up for the main April classics. Schedule is as follows:
3/3 Omloop Het Volk
4/3 Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne
7/3-11/3 Vuelta a Murcia
9/3-11/3 Driedaagse van West Vlaanderen
11/3-18/3 Paris-Nice
14/3-20/3 Tirreno-Adriatico
24/3 Milano-San Remo
26/3-30/3 Vuelta a Castilla y Leon
28/3 Dwars door Vlaanderen |
