If you ameliorate Deignan, stage like that will not be a problem.
Yeah, we'll see. My problem is how to keep him happy, because I can't see how I can get him the results worthy of his contract status as absolute leader...
When looking at the results, please keep in mind that I should probably be the fittest roster there - their fitness schedule has been maximized at this point, which should give me an edge. I wantet to get som early results to both take pressure of and to get me into races. |

No, but I'll pay for them later - as there will be other races later in the season where the others will have the same advantage over me - as I have over them. Getting results then should be more difficult.
The stage two results were over the top, but the rest is in the "normal" range, I think. |

I'm also hoping on Kopp for the sprints in smaller races with not to many good sprinters. We'll see in Langkawi. Traditionally it's not been a race for the top tier of sprinters and Kopp will be in good shape if he follows his schedule! |

Farewell to Argentina: Stage Six
"Flat as a pancake", is how to describe the finishing stage of Tour de San Luis. We have expectations for a sprint finish with Kopp. Our strongest competitors are likely to be Jimmy Casper (Besson), Garrido, Rasmussen (Saxo Bank) and Greg Henderson (Columbia).
The mountain took it's toll. Riders hitting the wall already early in the race!
A rider is off from the start. Not surpringsinglt it is Tchanliev. He has been on the move constantly in this race! McCann follows. A move is established. It is McCann (Statkraft-Bianchi), Coelho (Barbot-Siper), Moyano (Colombia es Pasion), Portal (Caisse d’Epargne) and Tchanliev (Club Bourgas). The gap was over 10 minutes at the most with 60 km yet to go. With 40 km to go the breakaway still had 8:39. The breakaway will come through! Coelho have a 70-sprint stat, while the rest have around 60. But McCann is the strongest rider in the group, by some margin, based on their stats.
With 14 km to go, Tchanliev attacks.
Coelho and Moyano can’t keep up. McCann is feeling very well today (+5) he counters and goes alone. He gets a gap . And he Wins! It was the second stage win for Statkraft-Bianchi.
Kopp finished third in the pack, behind Drujon and Henderson. The sprint in the peleton actually caused a split in the strong winds. Arvesen, who lead out Kopp, was on the right side. The rest came 1:13 back, so Arvesen actually moved up to take 8th overall.
PRESS RELEASE
“- Lovely stuff!”, says team manager Odin van Ginohove after Statkraft Bianchi’s second stage win in Tour de San Luis. “- McCann was in front from the start signal went. A five-men strong breakaway got loose. There was no one who could threaten the overall which, together with strong winds, help the breakaway stay clear”. The season opener have been very successful for the new pro-continental team Statkraft-Bianchi. Kurt Asle Arvesen came 8th in the overall, the best ranked rider who did not ride for a pro tour-team.

Editorial
This is the second breakaway that succeeded. I can't remeber a breakawy even taking the stage before. Is this because Kopp is the hot favourite and the best sprinter in the group alongside Casper. When I, as a sprint favourite did not chase - noone else seemed to do it either. Is this a bug?

McCANN, david (Giant Asia) (f.1973) - SHORT BIO
Irish veteran rider, and three times national road race champion, last time in 2006. He has also won the national time trial championship four times. He has mainly been riding outside Europe the last year, mostly for the Giant Asia Racing Tean based in Taiwan.
McCann has produced some strong results in the asian circuit. Last year he finished 4th in the highly ranked Chinese stage race Tour of Qinghai Lake, and 2nd in another Chinese race Tour of Hainan. He is a good allrounder which will be valuable to the team.
Not in the press kit info...:
In 2002 he testet positive for Noranrosterone. It was proved, however, that the substance was found in a glutamine supplement but was not listed on the label. He was given the minimum sentence of six month suspension. |

January summary
It's been a very good month for the team. My training strategy paid off as my riders were fit and had big sucess in the opening race. Two stage wins, and involved in all stages. Even my sponsor is feeling very good right now!
At this point we are 6th in the continenteal tour and 23rd in the CQRanking. Only four teams have more than our two victories!
Newsflash!
I am also selected to manage the national team of Norway this season.
Outlook
The travelling expense account is moaning, but we are still on our way to another exotic destinatnion. February will see the team go to Malaysia to ride Tour of Langkawi (2.HC). The absence of a time trial means that Philip Deignan might be on the first page of the overall standings - depending on the opposition of course. David Kopp will contest the sprints.
Then we head back to Europa to make our first showing there in Tour du Haut Var (1.1.) on the 21st, while celebrating the King of Norway's birthday!
Our clasical campaing is not on track, however, as we are turned don for borth Omlopp Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne. In february we want to have quite a people in good shape. My entire Langkawi squad will have fitness level 4 in their traning plans. Arvesen, Kopp, Backstedt, McCann and Nordhaug will all go to level 5 towards the end of the month.
In the News
In an interview with Syklingensverden.com Odin van Ginhove called it a huge frustration to be left out of Omloop Het Niewsblad, Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne and E3. “We have a team consisting of the reigning winner of E3 and a top 10 finished in last year’s Ronde van Vlaandaren, a former Paris-Roubaix winner and finally also the runner up from last years E3 and a three time top 15 finisher in the cobblestone Pro Tour races. On the basis of sports – we should have been in. It is just stupid, we have both the winner and the runner up in last year’s edition of E3 – but we are still refused”, van Ginohove complaied and added “- It’s like they have some stupid computer algorithm to pick teams with no analysis of what the teams actually can add to the race!”
Other results:
Tour of Wellington (T.2). Dario Cioni (ISD) won the race with a 10 seconds margin til Danny Pate (Garmin) and 12 seconds to Bartosz Huzareski (ISD). The decisive stages were the time trial and the only lumpy stage of the race. Cioni was 4th and 2nd in those two stages respectively.
Pro Tour kicked off with Tour Down Under. The race has one hilly stage, which saw Cancellara, Pozzato, Ballan and Fedrigo gain time on their rivals. Cancellare took the race win with his bonus seconds there. But the big winner was Cavendish – who took the five other stages. Cavendish looks unbeatable! |

Preview: Tour de Langkawi looming
PRESS RELEASE:
After a successful trip to Argentina and Tour de San Luis, Statkraft-Bianchi has now moved to Malaysia to participate in the Tour de Langkawi. “- This is the most prestigious race in Asia, and it will be a hefty challenge for the team ”, general manager Odin van Ginohove says. He continues “- But we showed to be in great shape in Argentina and we are hoping to produce some good results here as well”. One particular challenge will be the monstrous climb to Genting Highlands. “- That climb last forever” according to Statkraft-Bianchi rider Philip Deignan who have previous experience from the race. The climb is 20 km long and rises to 1650 metres with an average gradient of 5,5 percent.
MANGER COMMENTS:
All the flat stages should give some opportunities for making an impact. Much, of course, depends on who will be turning up. Kopp is in good shape and should be doing ok in the sprints. Deignan is also fairly fit, but he is not strong enough to follow the best (or the second best) up the slopes of Genting Highlands. That will probably be a stage to forget. But again, that obviously depends on who will be racing. If the really good people are away, Deignan's better fitness should perhaps send him in top 10?
My team:
D Kopp (Sprinter)
J Ramussen (Lead Out #1)
M Backstedt (Lead Out #2)
P Deignan (Climber)
S Remme
D McCann
L Persson
R Guldhammar
The competition:
Two Pro Tour teams (Bouygues Telecom, Francaise de Jeux) and some of the strongest pro -continental teams (Cervelo, Semmamenti PVC, CSF Navigare, Agritubel and more)
Quite a few strong sprinters present: Hushovd and Haussler (Cervelo), Loddo and Gavazzi (Serramenti PVC), Richeze&Richeze (CSF Navigare), Feillu (Agritubel), Haselbacher (Voralberg)
Strong climbers Serpa, Scarponi and Simoni (Serramenti), Sastre and Cuesta (Cervelo), Laverde (Colombia es Pasion), Pozzovivo (CSF) Cervelo, Serramanti and CSF will be the ones to dominate the race, I guess. But a top 10 should be within reach.
My fellow Norwegian team Sparebanken Vest is present. It shall be interesting to see what they can do. They have a wider squad this year with the rest of the old Joker Bianchi team. But more for the long term I guess, since I have taken all the good ones, hehe. |

LANGKAWI STAGE ONE
A Break goes from the start. Without me doing nothing Rasmussen is in E2, so he decides to follow. For no obvious reason, they are not allowed to go. Some time later 10 riders is allowed to go. We have no one. We are interested in a sprint to day, so we sends up Remme to help Cervelo who was alone in the front. They still have 2:30 with 35 KM to go. That shouldn’t hold. But we sets up McCann to help as well Team Halfords sends up 5 riders as well, riding for Hayles I assume. The last of the escapees to be wheeled in, is swallowed with 8K to go. Backstedt struggles to stay in the front. Rasmussen finds the wheel of Hunt (Cervelo).
Backstedt reappears. But Rasmussen can’t keep it up. Backstedts finds the wheel of Hayles, which helps us closer to the sprint.
Haussler and Hushovd is soon a distance from the rest.
Backstedt struggles to navigate. With 800 meters to go Kopp jumps after Richeze and tries to pass him. He can’t. Haussler takes it, Cervelo takes the double and we finish 5th and 6th.
We struggled in this sprint, so we are fairly happy with the results, coming in 5th and 6th. We have leared something about who, when and where today. So surely we should be able to pass Hayles on a good day. On the other hand, we kept Feillu and Loddo – stronger sprinters behind us.
FROM THE PRESS
“- We struggled to find each other in the sprint, but coming in 5th and 6th is not bad at all in this company. There is some top class sprinters here” van Ginohove commented to feltet.dk. The sprint was totally dominated by Cervelo duo Heinrich Haussler and Thor Hushovd.”. |

Yeah, they should be in normal circumstances. But I doubt they are very fit at this point, so it should be possible to come closer. Today my lead out was very unconvincing. If I utilize Backstedt better, Kopp should be able to start his sprint in the best position. Backstedt has the machine to pull him to the front in this race. |

Langkawi: Stage two
Another sprint stage. We’re not gonna go in breakaway today, and will purely concentrate on the sprint. It took some time before anyone got away today. After 40 KM (125 to go) Clancy from Team Halfords is out there on his own with 1:19 to the rest. But attacks kept coming. Johanson (Differange) and Hermans (Topsport Vlaanderen) bridged up. And shortly after a larger group was established in pursuit, including Davide Rebellin. Both my Irish and Norwegian counter parts (Sparebanken Vest and Sean Kelly Team is represented). But it took them 60 KM to get up with the others (except Hermans. They had 4 minutes wih 60 KM to go. Nobody was willing to pull in the peloton. So we went to work with Remme, McCann and Guldhammar.
Kopp is feeling very well today, so let’s hope we can set him up in a good way. 35 KM to go, and the peleoton is 2:30 back. We got some help from a couple of teams. But not Cervelo. They did not have anybody up front, so it was slightly frustrating. With 25 Km to go Rebellin attacked the breakaway group. Lucas Persson was not feeling well, and was dropped from the peloton (as on last stage) after having protected Deignan most of the way.
With 12 KM to go Guldhammer was leading our group, sitting in 3rd. He had Backstedt, Rasmussen and Kopp (protected by McCann) on his wheel. Backstedt took over with 9 KM to go as Rebellin were caught. Backstedt went on with 90-95 keeping us at the front. He needs to bring us the where the sprint starts. But Rasmussen had to take over with 4KM to go.
But we are in front. Kopp should be OK positioned today. At 2,9 Rasmussen openes up the sprint together with Hunt (for Haussler), Dall’Antiono (for Richeze) and Jalabert (for Feillu). Backstedts and Guldhammers high speed has made a gap with only 14 riders in the front. Hushovd is the only major sprinter to miss out. No overall contenders was present. Haussler had to go to the front withmore than 2KM to go.
Rasmussen sprinted well, so when Kopp left with 1,5 KM to go – we had a few metres, and Haussler had been going for some time already.
Kopp takes it!
IN THE NEWS (VG.no)
The norwegian cycling team Statkraft-Biancho took an impressive victory today in the most prestigious race in Asia.
David Kopp took the teams 3rd victory for the season in a mass sprint. He won in front of Thor Hushovd’s team mate Heinrich Haussler. Statkraft-Bianchi also had Jacob Moe Rasmussen coming third. “- It was an impressive and important victory for us”, team manager Odin van Ginohove says. “- With a new team on this level we wanted to make an impact early in the season to get attention and hopefully get invited to important races later in the season. We are now profiting from focusing on being fit early in the season”, he continues and adds that the team did an impressive job to set up Kopp.
Thor Hushovd came in 15th today. “I suffered from cramps, so I didn’t really participate in the sprint”, he explained. He came 2nd on the first stage and remains the best Norwegian rider overall on 3rd. Team Sparebanken Vest also participates in the race. “We have tried to be present in the breakaways, as we do not have strong enough sprinters to contest mass sprints”, Børge Ingar Persen tells VG.
The race will be decided with a mountain stage on Friday. None of the Norwegians expect to be able to keep up with the best there. “We will work for Philip [Deignan]”, Stian Remme says.

Yeah. Quite happy about that. He had to start the sprint behind me, and much before Kopp. He had been in the wind for at least a kilometer, when Kopp left Rasmussen's wheel
