I have a new team. I've taken Sastre out, just heard some things about him. I assure you this is not a tour for him, he isn't in form yet, he really wants another TdF. In the long TT he's going to be in very big trouble, although in the mountains he is going to do well.
I'm pretty sure he'll be at the top of his game and will be 4th or so overall. Feel free to join the long list of people who've been telling me otherwise

Well here goes this is my team!
Climbers: Kinda hard to overlook Simoni and Sastre considering they are likely to be up there on GC, Augustyn and Valjavec are in this category but not really in the same class. Not sure about the others including Rodriguez, I mean he did great in L-B-L but seems inconsistent in Grand Tours up to date (I guess partly due to towing Valverde)
Sprinters: Cav and Petacchi surely not worth the price, went for Hunter though Hunt was tempting for the team mate category points but I felt Hunter is the type of sprinter who just keeps trying and may go for points comp. Hunt is again not of the same class. Not sure Haedo will be up there all the time, was tempted by Hagan but he is young and unproven.
Gregerios: Was torn between going for sprinter types or GC outsiders/climbers. Farrer well he is an out and out sprinter, hoping Swift will repeat his Basque GC sprinting and I have always had a soft spot for Siotsou. I really wanted to go for Voekler, Kessikoff, Gilbert but I wasn't sure they wouldn't be one stage wonders. I did also consider Wegiulias for a complete Brit pack selection in the Gregerios but ... well he is also a probable one stage wonder type.
All-round: Just couldn't get Garzelli sprinting for every situation when a reduced peloton gets to finish out of my head as may well happen in a large amount of stages this year. I think Basso (and kinda want Basso) will win the Giro, but he is too expensive, leiphiemer will surely be up there. Cunego well I felt he would be like Garzelli and may well hang with the best. |

Weglius won't win a stage, he's a pure domestique, and a good one at that - ie he sits up once his work is done to conserve for the next day. I'd seriously doubt him to be up there even though he's a talented climber. There was an article in a cycling mag once I believe that interviewed him about his role, he explained that he's forgotten how to win as that's no longer his goal. He is one of the forgotten by the public cyclists that put their entire careers into serving others. A true gregerio.

Yeah, I recall that article too, I love seeing the work of Charly. I am guessing Silence-Lotto bought him for Evans in the TdF but here in the Giro where Charly has a lot of experience who exactly is he riding for? Gilbert? Charly is a true gregerio for sure I heard he once de facto rode for Italy in the worlds whilst wearing a GB vest!!! |

The plan was Lloyd for the GC.....then Lloyd crashed very hard. And that was that.

Well, maybe we'll be surprised and see him riding for himself... but I seriously doubt it. I imagine his role will be looking after Gilbert so old Phil can make a badly timed attack about 60km out on a hilly stage...

Hence why he is no longer selected for GB in the World Championships. |
