The first four escapers, Haddou is there.
A second group is after them.....
No sooner have they come together then the peloton is there, they're reeled in already.
Eventually more attacks go. This one features Neyens, De Maria, Milan and Giling.
Another group sets off after them. It features, Jeandesboz, Pliuschin. Bouet, Labbe and Guldhammer.
Another group goes to join the others. Bellemakers, Fuchs, Rault, Knudsen and Jorgensen are all there.
Mombaerts has a sly dig on the front, several riders respond but the Auber rider sits up promptly.
More riders break from the peloton. This group includes Gillou, Kangert, Kreder, Meirhaeghe and Meyer.
Mombaerts then attacks alone.
He makes it across to the break.
Yet more riders attack to join the break. Didier, Smukulis and Le Lay this time.
Coenen takes a tumble....
As Thire punctures, the duo would work together to get themselves back to the peloton.
Beppu and Ockeloen attack from the peloton to join the break.
It's getting ridiculous as Mangel, Bideau, Kruijswijk and Vanspeybroeck attack to get across to the break.
There goes Valentin and Delrot now too.
A bird eye view of what's going on up front. When Valentin and Delrot join the break numbers 29.
In the peloton Landbouwkrediet try to get things going but with so many teams having riders up front they have little help.
The break tackles a hill.
On another hill, Mombaerts tries to shake things up by attacking, his companions refuse to let him go.
The pace in the peloton has quickened and in a semi disaster for Auber, they lose sprinter Bacquet as he drops.
Things get itchy up front as they increase the pace to stay away. By this point the gap isn't coming down fast enough and it becomes clear the chances of the break making it are high.
Vanspeybroeck blows it open at the front as he heads for the sprint but Kruijswijk has his number.....
and the Rabobank Continental rider takes it in the sprint!
1 Steven Kruijswijk Rabobank CT 4h47'25
2 Pieter Vanspeybroeck Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator st
3 Diego Milan Acqua & Sapone-Caffè Mokambo st
---------------------------------------------------------------------
27 Johan Mombaerts Auber 93 +56 (st as Geslin 22nd) |

It was after the Cholet-Pays de Loire and Dubois was making his way back to the team hotel on foot. He had a lot to contemplate, that morning he'd run into Christian Prudhomme and it had been eventful. The Tour de France director informed Dubois that his application to take the team to the Critérium International had been accepted. He then dropped a surprise by stating the team was to be given an invitation to Paris-Roubaix if they wanted it but they'd need to respond soon. Dubois accepted on the spot but he still expressed an element of surprise, he stated his team might not be able to set things alight. Prudhomme informed him that there are other teams who never do so either and this was mainly for the benefit of French cycling that his riders would at least be able to ride. Dubois was still confused, Prudhomme then imformed him that someone had encouraged him to extend the invitation, Dubois wanted to know who but Prudhomme stated he'd know soon enough.
Dubois has these thoughts at the back of his mind during the race, it had been a strange experience itself with the break, it was just unlucky that Mombaerts wasn't much of a sprinter but it was a decent showing none the less. Now here he was walking through the streets, wondering how to deal with the huge challenge that awaited. Dubois noticed a sort of commotion up ahead as a crowd gathered, he approached two police officers and asked what was going on. "That man is talking to the wall" said one of the officers "He's been doing it a while now" said the second officer. Dubois thought the guy was nuts but curiosity killed the cat as they say and Dubois inquired as to what the man was saying. The first officer responded "He's saying things like Boston, Racing, Bruins, Celtics, Damn you ESPN and..... Erin". Dubois came over all white 'No, it can't be, it's impossible' he thought. He decided to approach the man and heard him start singing "Up and down the City Road, In and out the Eagle, That’s the way the money goes...." Dubois put his hand on the man's shoulder, the man spun round and shouted straight in Dubois' face "POP GOES THE WEASEL". Dubois recoiled in shock and ended up falling on his ass, he looked up at the man. "Toto!" he exclaimed as Toto roared with laughter. |

Toto extended his hand to Dubois to help him up. "Well Dubois, it looks like I found you" said Toto before he became confused and said "or did you find me? Technicalities, technicalities, technicalities, hmm marvellous YES!" The two police officers approached seemingly wanting to have a word with Toto. Dubois stopped them and explained he could deal with Toto, the police officers shrugged and warned Toto to cut down on the histrionics, "YES SIR!" said Toto loudly as he snapped off a salute. Dubois turned to Toto and said that perhaps they should go somewhere to talk, Toto agreed and said they should make their way to a cafe "Yes, coffee, everyone loves a nice cuppa, whether it's a nice cup of tea or a coffee. It makes people relax, women use it to catch up on the gossip like who their neighbour that they don't like, is having an affair with. We'll go catch up on all the sexy gossip". Dubois looked at Toto quite confused about what he just said "HA HA" said toto quite madly.
The duo were now in a cafe waiting on their coffee and croissants. "Coffee, Coffee, Coffee, Coffee" Toto said over and over again. Dubois was starting to believe those that said Toto had gone mad, the waitress arrived with their order and Toto seemed to snap out of it "Coffee, ah yes, great" he turned to the waitress and handed her €5 "There you go my dear lady a tip for you and if you're not supposed to accept tips then stick it down your undercrackers, I'm sure the boss won't look there as there's this great big hidden sign that says 'Don't even go there until there's a ring on my finger' oh I'm a hopeless romantic me". The waitress shuffled off quite confused by what Toto was talking about. Toto slapped the table playfully and began to speak quickly and barely taking a breath "Now then now then. You've got questions, loads of questions, all these questions swirling inside your head. I have answers, not answers to all your questions but I'll try my best anyway because that's what I do". Dubois paused for a moment and asked the most obvious question considering recent events "Was it you who helped get the team invited to Paris-Roubaix?" Toto smiled and said "What makes you think it was me?" Dubois paused again and said "I was told you had an obsession with me, perhaps the team and I do know your obsessed with cobbles and Paris-Roubain in particular. Who else could it be!". Toto smiled "Amazing powers of deduction you have there Dubois, maybe you're the new Sherlock Holmes".
"Do you have dirt on the ASO or something?" Dubois said. "Dirt dear boy? Toto doesn't like dealing in dirt, I prefer to use my influence and standing in cycling to influence things. People look at me and say "There goes Toto, mad as a hatter but a wonderful person at the same time". Toto thumped the table a few times with his fist, "Do you mind" said an English woman at the next table, "Yes" said an Irish woman "You're wrecking our time here". Toto's face came all over like a clap of thunder. "Oh I'm ruining you're time here? I've watched you two witches for two days now and you're always either in this cafe or one of the others. I haven't seen you two do anything apart from pretend you're continentals, yet I'm the one ruining your time here. Get a f*****g grip!" The two women looked quite shocked and the English woman said "Well I never...." Toto smiled and interrupted her "Never been what? Never been kissed? Never had your 'back doors' smashed in by your husband? Yeah, you don't want him jack hammering away there because that's where you s**t from!" Toto was interrupted by the Irishwoman "You've crossed the line" she said. Toto broke out in a mischievous grin. "No how's this for crossing the line? You're women, that means when a man is talking, you keep your mouths shut". he turned to the Irish woman "You look like a frustrated old bag" to the English woman "You look like Churchill and I don't mean Winston". Toto rummaged inside his pockets and produced a picture
"Ooooohhhh Yes!" Toto said to her face. The women went quiet and Toto turned back to Dubois. "Where was I?" Dubois still not knowing what to say about what transpired just said "You helping me". "Help? Help? Yes wonderful idea" said Toto "Just like when an old lady is struggling to her home with her shopping, a young man comes up and offers to help. Sadly theses days there are those that would approach the old lady with a knife and say "Giz your bag old lady" oh what a terrible world we live in but what a wonderful world all the same". Toto drank his coffee "Help you I shall Dubois, in whatever ways I can find, but don't expect miracles of me, for I am only a man". With that Toto stood up and swept out of the cafe. |

Criterium International (which I played and completed last week) will be up by tomorrow morning (namely the twighlight hours). I've started losing my sanity and it looks likely that the College World Series is the last possible saving grace. Kida will testify to this as I went loony on him last night over MSN as I was watching the Red Sox @ Tigers, he said I'm beyond help and he might be right. |

Dubois was now beating off questions from the media, they'd taken an interest in Auber and it's performances. It didn't help that both Brouzes and Mombaerts had been spotted kicking the team car in frustration after the 2nd stage. One journalist, an Irishman called Paul Kelly was very enthusiastic. He represented an unknown site called Irishplay.ie and was forever telling Dubois to hang in there and that he was doing great work. After the finish of the stage 3 TT however, Dubois recieved an email from Toto, it said "The media are all over you like Hugh Hefner on a young blonde. Congratulations on that but I advise you to be wary, especially of Paul Kelly, he may not be the friend you think he is". Dubois was confused until the next morning when he was tipped off to view the website Kelly worked for. There screaming in big letters was the headline:
TOTO INVOLVED IN DOPING PRACTICES! |

The deatails basically summarized were that Toto was linked to a mysterious doctor, codenamed "Doc Hollywood" and that the pair of them had been doping riders for some time. Dubois was startled by this, had Toto been involved in such practices? He was worried that such events would lead to a 'guilt by association' mindset for him and Auber, depsite Toto having no involvement in the team. Dubois would have to set these feelings and worries aside though as the build up to Paris-Roubaix was to begin.
This was easier said than done though, over the next few days, Paul Kelly printed articles that included the headlines:
TOTO THE FRAUDSTER!
TOTO FIXED YOUNGSTER RACES!
TOTO THE PHILANDERER! WORSE THAN BERLUSCONI!
It seemed either there was truth to these allegations or Kelly had a vendetta. He recieved a phone call from Seamus Cassidy. "I'll explain everything you need to know soon Dubois but have patience. I must inform you now that Toto has siappeared and no-one knows where he is"....... |
