One stage and the KoM shirt. That's a very decent start.

Stage 5 - Profile
The first mountain stage of this year’s Giro takes us 219km from Sora to the central Apennines, and specifically the monastery town of Montevergine
The Stage is reasonably flat throughout, with several small hills early on breaking the monotony, but the real test comes at the end!
The final climb is 17.1km long, with an average slope of 5%, but with sections approaching 10%. This will be the first test of the riders who will challenge for the General Classification.
We enter the stage in good condition, but with 15 mountain points on offer for the stage winner, and only 5 points on offer for the intermediate mountain sprint, this will be Voeckler’s last day leading the mountain classification.

Stage 5 – Race
The riders head off toward the foothills of the Apennines, knowing that not only do they have a long 200km ride ahead of them, but that the last 17km are all uphill!
The first attacks come after 10km, and Voeckler goes with them!
A second group of attackers goes clear 10km later, and the pack does not give chase
With the mountain sprint approaching a group of 3 goes clear, and Voeckler is in it!
Voeckler attacks!
And wins the mountain points
His work done for the day, Voeckler sits up and allows the peloton to catch back up
Meanwhile the break keeps gaining time on the pack
Eventually, with the break holding a 7 minute lead, Astana and Caisse d’Epargne take up the chase, for Basso and Di Luca respectively
With 20km to go, the peloton reaches the foothills of the Montevergine climb. The break is now only 30 seconds up the road and the main climbers are moving up the field. Columbia has been watching all of the leaders closely today, and Basso of Astana and Gonzalez of Saunier really do not look well! Di Luca, however, looks in really good shape, and looks eager to attack. Gesink reports that he is feeling strong today
The climb begins just as the breakaway is reeled in. We will wait to see who goes first
12km to go and the pack is starting to break up. Astana and Caisse pound out the pace at the front, but nobody has attacked yet
We hit the steepest part of the climb, and Kasper Linde of Lampre attacks! Suddenly, the World Champion, Danilo Di Luca, goes with him. Di Luca shows his strength, however, and powers past Linde to take the lead
Gesink looks at Devine, and they both know that it is time to attack! Ardila of Rabobank goes with them, and together they make it up to join Linde
Finally, Basso attacks and Cobo goes with him, but where is Gonzalez?
They close on the second group, so Gesink attacks again!
Di Luca is still alone out front, can anyone catch him today?
Gesink is in 2nd place, with Linde leading the chasing group, when suddenly Ricco attacks with just over a kilometre to ride!
and charges past all of them!
But its all too little too late, and Di Luca cruises to the stage victory!
Ricco charges after Gesink, to try to grab second spot
But Gesink holds on, and Ricco has to settle for 3rd
Devine finishes with the Basso group just behind Ricco
And the rest of the field follows on later

A great stage for us, with Gesink and Devine performing really well! Tomorrow Gesink will wear the Young Rider's jersey and Voeckler, although second in the Mountain Classification, will keep the jersey as Di Luca will be in the Maglia Rosa.
The big surprise was Gonzalez, who lost time on all of the main players today. For those following the Inigo Cuesta saga, he finished 17 minutes off the pace in 159th! |

Stage 6
An overnight transit of 80km South takes us to the start of the 6th Stage of this year’s Giro, Avellino, a small town in the hills East of Naples. From here we head northeast to Foggia, 154km of rolling hills, with a long descending run in to the finish.
We enter stage 6 off the back of a great day yesterday. Gesink is lying 2nd in the GC, and wears the Young Rider jersey, with Devine sitting nicely in 4th spot. Voeckler is 2nd in the mountain category behind Di Luca, but will wear the jersey today as Di Luca will be in pink, and Pacheco stays in the Points jersey. Today’s mountain sprint is worth 3 points, not enough for Voeckler to overtake Di Luca, but we’ll have a go anyway!
The sun is shining and it is a beautiful day as the riders head out into the countryside
The serenity lasts about 10km, until the attacks come! Voeckler goes again!
The pack chases for a short time, but the break hangs on and eventually the pack lets them go. Voeckler, meanwhile, jumps off the front as they approach the mountain sprint 30km into the stage
Crosbie tries to take the mountain points, but Voeckler hangs on for the win
Meanwhile, the pack has really given up, and the breakaway gains more and more time. We decide to let Voeckler stay with the break as the descending run in might give them a chance! With 70km to ride, the break has 6’40”, and Caisse d’Epargne finally starts to worry!
Disaster for CSC, as Larsson falls! With the peloton at full tilt, he has no chance to catch up and will lose a lot of time today
Inside 50km, and two riders have jumped off the front of the break, but the other 4 are riding them down. The pack is closing but the break might still make it!
With 20km to ride the break is back together, and the pack is still more than 2 minutes behind!
9km to go, and Voeckler attacks for the line! Crosbie goes with him. The man on the right of the screen misses the action as he looks like he is texting someone!
With only 4km left, Leleuso, one of the breakaway riders, finds some strength and goes past Voeckler and Crosbie, but the pack is bearing down on these three riders
Meanwhile, the pack lines itself up for the sprint – Riccio of Liquigas and Machado of Rabobank look well placed, while Boom and Pacheco are in the central train, with Nielsen of Mitsubishi on our wheel. Vigano of Quickstep, and Passeron of Silence-Lotto are in the mix as well
The sprint begins with the 3 remaining breakaway riders only metres ahead, and Nocentini leads Riccio to in the sprint
Nocentini and Riccio sprint past their teammate Leleuso, and the break is finally caught! Pacheco sprints past Crosbie and Voeckler into 4th spot! Are Liquigas going to get an unlikely 1-2-3?
No chance! The breakaway riders are running on empty and the sprinters rocket past them.
Pacheco and Nielsen pass Nocentini, but no-one will catch Riccio today!
And Liquigas get the win!
Pacheco comes home in 2nd place, and extends his lead in the sprint competition, with Nielsen of Mitsubishi getting a very good 3rd place for the small team. Cuesta, meanwhile, finally finishes a stage in the pack

I'll try to get them tonight when I get home, but unfortunately my laptop powerpack has died, and I have to wait until tomorrow for a courier to deliver a new one, so my battery might run out of juice On that note, I was going to play stages 7 and 8 tonight, but without power I'll have to wait until tomorrow night!

Voeckler and Crosbie were caught 1.4km from the line, and Leleuso was caught with 1km to go! There'll be another day for a break to make it though, so I'm not bothered - anyway, Pacheco got 2nd place, and I'm happy with that |

Larsson isn't that great tbh - his TT stat is only 78.
Riccio isn't that good - I think his sprint stat s 79 - he just had a really good lead out from Nocentini, and my sprint train didn't have Southerland leading out as he was too tired, so Pacheco had some catching up to do!
Nielsen's stats are below

I must admit that I hadn't spotted him before - without looking in the game (I'm at work at the mo) I guess he's one of the scouted guys on a small Continental team, as I don't recall him featuring in any of the races I've ridden this season.
The Plus Package is a great db, but the only reservation I have with it is that a lot of the young riders either have too much potential, or develop too quickly. Although maybe its just a function of the game rather than the db!?! |

Well, the courier hasn't delivered my new powerpack, apparently they are delivering it tomorrow!
So, no PCM for me tonight! |
