February/points review

Inspired by seancoll I'll do a short review of the season so far. It will center around our expectations and the points we've scored in the first two months:

NameExpected points pre-seasonPoints scored so far Adjusted expectations
Zariff2004100
Kozhatayev100131200
Schomber1500150
Page10018100
Carpenter10028100

Liphongyu15015
Granigan30025
Moutsios505
De Comarmond505
Iradukunda000
Aru10010
Mundle502665

As written pre-season the team expectations is to be just outside top 5, though we would love to join the battle for promotion. We've had a great January and a quiet February, which sort of balances each other out. Let's dive a little more into the over- and underperformances so far.
Zariff has only scored 4 point, but he's also only had 1 chance. I'm certain that he will score at a later point, but our expectations were probably too big in hindsight. Kozhatayev, on the other hand, took the CT with storm in Tachira and brought home the first GC win in the team's history. He should at least reach 200 points before the season ends. Our last captain, Schomber, hasn't really had the opportunity to prove himself yet, but 150 points still seems reasonable with races like Amissa Bongo coming up.
Page and Carpenter are doing well. Some minor points here and there, they're performing as expected. Dennis hasn't scored yet, and I think he's a big reason for our poor TTT in Catalunya. If he doesn't improve, we're going to have a hard time in the upcoming TTT's. Nikiema is scoring decent however, and more suiting races like Izola is yet to come.
Then we have a big field of luxury teammates and domestiques. Smit stands out with 46 points and could turn out to be our best bargain of this transfer period. Lastly, we have Mundle who has already proved his worth. He's not going to receive a new contract, but he could very well earn a place in the team's history books if he keeps delivering.
Ultimately, we expect around 1160 points after the adjustments. Last season that would have been enough for 7th, but right now it looks like it would only be enough for 9th place as Team Würth MODYF is projected to reach 1200+ points currently. Nevertheless, we'll keep pushing for promotion. Especially as 6th and 7th might also grant access to PCT (perhaps 8th as well, who knows).

We might as well divert the attention from TOME to some of our upcoming races in April, as our sponsors probably won't be too delighted with how the team performs currently.

Ah shit, here we go again... Another chance for Zariff to disappoint.
We're aiming for a podium spot with the help of a full leadout train and lots of strong guys to control the break, but I still have a feeling this won't go our way.

The competition is most likely going to be very tough, hence we don't really have any expectations. Nikiema and Laas should mainly chase stages, but Carpenter might sneak into top 20 in the GC.
The rest are here to support in any way possible or maybe join a breakaway. Especially Manfredi could be nice to see in an early attack under the right circumstances.

The first HC race in team history! We thought long and hard about the roster, but we already regret not bringing Smit. Instead, we have Zariff for the sprint and Mundle to cover attacks. Granigan is the only leadout guy available, but Zariff will most likely surf wheels instead as other teams should have way stronger setups.
Top 10 is the goal, although it could just as well be a zero-pointer.

The sponsors enjoyed the early April previews, so we'll continue that trend. Four races upcoming, but we've already presented our roster for Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt as it's a goal race, so this will be for the first three races of May.

Looking forward to seeing if Seboka can do anything here, or if he'll already start tiring before the climbing starts. Even if Seboka tells us he has good legs, we probably still want someone in the BOTD. Aru, Liphongyu or Dennis should be our primary targets. Manfredi is also more than welcome to try something from far out.

Should we bring Kozhatayev, Smit or both? We decided to send Smit elsewhere, but still a team composed with the TTT in mind. Barbari is also here with a rare occurrence as our main sprinter. No support for him though, he'll have to surf wheels or find a reliable SEE turtle.
Dennis and Kiflay should also be looking forward to the opening ITT, whereas Schomber finally gets a chance to shine on the final stage.

Finally, a prologue for Schomber (and Dennis). Unfortunately, it contains cobbles, so we won't see any major result from him most likely, but Kiflay might perform decently.
Our priority will be to get Zariff to part of the sprints - which we haven't really succeeded with thus far... Page is even welcome to take over priority if Zariff doesn't perform, and should regardless be our best option for S5.
Lastly, I'd like to mention Mundle, though he should fly under the radar most of the time. Hopefully, he causes some havoc and might even score in one of the stages if he play his cards right.

We've entered April so it's time to present our squad for the races in June, right? It might be a bit early, but better too early than late, or however that saying goes.

Zariff will captain the team in Finland. Barbari and Granigan are there to setup a sprint train if needed, but it's not expected from the team. More likely is it that we'll be present in the BOTD or see a late attack from Mundle.

Should we have brought an 8th rider? Probably, yes.
However, we'd rather spend Carpenter and Barbari's race days differently, which means we could bring Manfredi or someone even less suited for TT's. Thus, we opted for a leaner setup, which hopefully still nets us some points.

We expect big things from Kozhatayev in Canada; top 3 is the goal, but top 5 will still be considered a success. Manfredi was 8th last year, but won’t have the opportunity to improve, as he’ll be our primary mountain domestique, with Liphongyu as the only other capable support in this terrain.
Moutsios, Schomber, and Dennis are here to secure a decent result in the final stage, the TTT. That leaves only Barbari, who will be free to chase his own result on the three flat stages.

As I thought the Zariff + Page/Barbari combo is not working out and they're better off separated. Zariff also might be better suited in a more of an underdog role in PT/PCT.

Most likely another sprint finish, but finally it's Page’s time to shine again. He should have plenty of support and can decide on his own if we should try to build a train or if he'd rather surf wheels.
Nikiema and Manfredi are more than welcome to join an early break, but we'd prefer to see De Comarmond stay in the peloton to help our leaders. On the other hand, it would be cool to see Mundle and Smit throw in a sneaky attack in the final kilometers, if they have the legs for it.

Overall, we've had to slightly decrease our expectations. However, 1135 is pretty close to both the Ranking Projection and our own initial assessment pre-season.
Dennis, Barbari, Manfredi, and Granigan aren't performing as expected, and Page isn't happy working in the shadow of Zariff. On a more positive note, we've seen great performances by Nikiema and Kiflay recently plus Aru has scored some minor points.
If we score 1135 points in total, and the Ranking Projections stick for the other teams, we should improve one spot to 8th. That's still a bit too far from the promotion spots, however both Trans and Würth have relied on the cobbles, which means they might not meet the current expectations. Therefore, we'd like to underline that we're still fighting for promotion.
May the strongest pride rule the savannah.

Interesting to see how you adjust the expectations, a bit more red than green in the last update, but hopefully your riders can still positively surprise you. 149 points to go (not looking at Olympia Smile ) is still quite a way to go for Schomber, let's see if he can do it Smile

Slightly lowered our overall expectations, but still plenty of room for positive surprises. Schomber is the furthest from our expectations, and even though he's just scored in Olympia, a lot relies on his performance in Uppsala, where a strong performance in the prologue might also bring GC points.

Back on with the previews. It has been a rough couple of months for the team, with the exception of the Tour of Vancouver, hence it's with great pleasure we can now present almost the same roster for Giro del Trentino:

While we expected great things in Vancouver - and succeeded. We would be happy with a top 5 in Trentino, as the parcour doesn't fit Kozhatayev quite as well. The support should be just as good though, or maybe even better, as Carpenter replaces Barbari, and they are approximately equal in TT, but Carpenter is stronger in the mountains. No other changes have been made to the roster compared to Vancouver.

No Smit in Yekaterinburg, but first race of the season for our youngster Iradukunda. However, as usual our captain should be Nikiema. If he doesn't have the legs on the day the lieutenants - Carpenter and Laas - are welcome to pursue a result on their own. It would also be nice to see Manfredi, De Comarmond or Seboka in the break, whereas Aru is the key domestique for the day and should stay in the peloton for as long as possible.

Kozhatayev has (almost) been the sole highlight of the team so far, but I'm not sure how much more we can expect from him. He should have decent support on the harder stages by Laas, Seboka, Manfredi, and Aru, but I suspect the competition will be too strong in Morocco.

Initially, we had planned to bring Page, but unfortunately the plans were changed. Instead, we're bringing Barbari in case it ends in a mass sprint. If it's a reduced group Nikiema might be able to make the cut, but ideally, we'll ride the stage aggressively, where someone like Smit could play a big role.

As stated in the Period Ranking #6, we're projected to reach 1030 points, which should be enough for 7th. However, we're still aiming for top 5, and believe 1160 points are possible. You might also notice that there are more red than green numbers above, but those are mainly minor tweaks, whereas our expectations for Kozhatayev and Nikiema has risen greatly.
Speaking of Kozhatayev, he has recently performed well in Vancouver, and we expect a few more points in Trentino. Nikiema has also done well, and he should have a few more chances of scoring before the season ends. Schomber is another one of our riders looking for a chance to score, and Uppsala should be the perfect opportunity. We need a flawless performance from him, as we estimate he could score around 100 points in that race alone. However, we only expect minor points from him in the remaining of the season, so a lot of pressure on his shoulders in Uppsala.
Zariff has finally started to (slightly) perform, but Page apparently doesn't like to work with him, so let's hope Page can do something in San Luis, where Zariff isn't in the roster. We also expected a bit more from Carpenter, but he's been working hard for the team, so we won't be too disappointed if he manages to double his points through races like Yekaterinburg.
We'll conclude this update with a small look at Smit and Mundle. They've both done well, but it's been a while since they found the needed luck to really succeed. Smit is running out of options, with only a few races left on his calendar, but Mundle will conclude his time in our cow-spotted jersey with plenty of race days, and therefore also the possibility to beat our expectations.
All in all, we hope to reach 1160 points when the season ends, and that should be enough for 6th, if the current projections hold true. Let's see if that's enough for promotion?
