besides these 'top grades' you must remember how the grades are rewarded. There is no set grade boundries untill all papers have been marked. It's then done on how students found the papers. So they may say 10% got 85% so that will be A*
Basically it's a numbers game with no set boundries.

crommy did you do yours? I can honestly say this year wasn't easy.
No, I took my AS levels this years (that's the first half of A levels for you non-English people).

Nope. That's wrong.
They do it by making some people take practice versions of the paper years beforehand (I took some of them). The marks they get set the grade boundaries. It's only if say everyone gets an A* in the real thing they use the way you describe.
And yes, AS levels are more fun - you only do the subjects you want to do, so most of the time your not bored

Most definately incorrect there for A levels. Maybe for GCSEs that would stand, but for A levels, the marking is a whole different kettle of fish. For example, my sister in one of her maths papers didnt answer 2 of the 10 long questions, and got 100% mark. How? Because the paper was so difficult that people had to be graded up. Ie the whole country. It's a combination of guessing at the correct grade boundaries and moving it once all exams have been marked. And also, if the grade boundaries moved completely based on amount of people getting certain percentages there wouldn't be the yearly "uproar" about exams getting easier and more people passing them. Though i do have to say, all exams i have taken so far have proven little in the way of a person's intelligence, or apptitude in doing any kind of skilled, logical, common sensical, or plain simple, job at all. In other words, i think exams are a load of bull. Apart from they do seperate the scum from the slightly lesser scum at uni. Though the dumbest people go to uni, it must be said.

I was of course talking about GCSE's. A levels have UMS scoring, which is completely different. You can get full marks without getting every question right. So you can get full marks without getting full marks

GCSEs have UMS marks too. Most, if not all of my GCSEs had the UMS scoring system.

In my GCSE maths exam 4 years ago all you needed was 80% for full marks so I am sure that they use UMS

Well, we can use the ECTS-system for comparing European grades, I guess?

*sigh*
School's been in session for a week now, and I already feel half dead.
Anyway, apparently I got ( if I change the grades correctly to English ) 8 A's, and 6 B's last year, so at least my results are okay.

pff University is still 2 years away for me, or 3 if something goes wrong obviously
Im now in the 5th year still doing the bilingual program although most lessons are done in dutch now since the national exam is not in english, only some subjects that arent a part of the exam like physical education, religious studies are still in english while our english classes are longer and also more difficult, not nice for my parents financially since even tho the EU is supporting the bilingual program it costs alot of money partly because we have a trip to England (almost) every year, first year we visited Canterbury for 2 days, 2nd year it was 5 somewhere in West Midlands, 3rd year 6 days Stratford Upon Avon, last year the Ardennes and this year Helsinki which seems like fun also cos we're taking the plane...I already pity the ones who are going to be on the same plane as me and my crazy classmates
Also 1 year ago you could choose a profile just like the ones who followed the regular dutch program (VWO and TTO it is called for the dutchies), I chose the economical profile since science, biology etc. were by far my worst subjects the previous year and instead of following Management class I decided to do both languages (French and German) and since I was the only boy to do so I have a French+German Class with me being the only boy I mainly did this because my main goal is still to become a sports reporter/journalist and I thought it'd be handier for me to do both German and French instead of another economical class. Only thing I need to improve severely if I want to be accepted at a university where I can follow a journalism program is my Dutch, my Dutch grades were mediocre the past few years and it really must go up
School starts in 2 weeks here, yay...

My education is now officially over: I handed in my Msc Project on friday and am now ready to start my career.
As previously mentioned on these pages, it's a dream job for me, not just because of the subject matter (hydrographic survey), but because of the job timetable. For example, the first week of employment I get to sit at home and be paid. Then, I do basic introductory training for a week followed by another week at home. Then two more weeks of training followed by another week at home...and thats all I know at this time.
I love the smell of free time! |
