Another hard race and first one from few 1.HC races until the very end of the year. Many great WT teams and very good riders. It will be hard, but as always I'm trying my best.
20 km to go - front group with 37 riders.
11 km! Only 20 riders. Tempo is really high. I can barely catch a breath.
5 km to go. Only 19 riders are fighting for the final victory.
Attacks! 1.5 km!
What a hard and steep climb that was. I finish in the top 10, which (looking at what riders are in the top 10) is awesome result.
Top 15:
1 | Jakob Fuglsang | Astana Pro Team | 5h16'16 | 2 | Adam Yates | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 3 | Miguel Angel Lopez | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | Fabio Aru | UAE Team Emirates | s.t. | 5 | Diego Ulissi | UAE Team Emirates | s.t. | 6 | Simon Yates | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 7 | Remco Evenepoel | Deceuninck - Quick-Step | + 23 | 8 | Claudio Rusconi | Zalf Euromobil Desirèe Fior | s.t. | 9 | Bob Jungels | Deceuninck - Quick-Step | + 39 | 10 | Damiano Caruso | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 11 | Domenico Pozzovivo | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 12 | Enrico Battaglin | Team Katusha Alpecin | + 55 | 13 | Gianluca Brambilla | Trek - Segafredo | + 1'16 | 14 | Mikkel Frølich Honoré | Deceuninck - Quick-Step | s.t. | 15 | Dries Devenyns | Deceuninck - Quick-Step | s.t. |
Mini Lombardia! What more to add. Great chance to check the route and roads so I might have a bit of an idea how Il Lombardia looks like. Not that hard as real monument, but it's still very difficult race. I think I might have a decent chance for good place.
I'm being one of the outsiders for final win right here. So I try some moves to make this more difficult for my rivals - 19 km.
I'm riding alone - 11.5 km.
5 km - only +39" lead.
3 km - 1 minute lead! I've got this in the bag!
I have just won Piccolo Lombardia! Wow, I'm absolutely speechless right now. What a performance on last 12 km. Incredible!

With a really high tempo this classic can be really selective. I have to be careful to not drop accidentally from the main group.
Riders are attacking. With 27 km left we have seen many moves, no one escaped. 38 riders in the front group.
10 km to the finish - 26 riders in the front.
Attacks! I'm too tired to follow.
I was out of energy with 5 km to the finish. Couldn't do more than that.

One of the most well known races that isn't WT classic. Two very difficult attempts at one climb after very long flat section. Many great puncheurs will make this race very difficult for me.
In 15 km we will turn left for the final 2 km.
We start the final short climb!
3 km - I'm still in the competition for the final win.
Last one km!
It was really really close. But look at the all the great riders I beat. I'm really satisfied with my performance. Podium place was so close.

One last classic of the year. Last difficult race in this season. I'll do my best to perform good here.
It's probably the longest race in my career so far. Probably even in my life. I have to manage my energy very well.
One last attempt on La Serra - 20 km to the finish. Still a lot of riders in the front group.
More than 20 riders were fighting for the victory right here. Some of them tried to attack on final 5 km but nothing serious happened. Final sprint was good. I saved some energy for it and finished 2nd. Really good race to finish my last difficult and not flat part of this season.

My last race of the year. Completely flat one. All 5 stages are flat. Nothing serious, nothing dangerous. Even tho on few occasions, few final km aren't looking completely flat, it should all ends with a mass sprint. Unless some breakaway riders will be able to deliver big time. I might try few breakaways hoping I can grab few bonus seconds so I can finish a bit higher in final GC.
I went into an early breakaway. I did win first two intermediate sprint to secure few bonus seconds. Then I decided to slow down so I could be caught by the peloton and save some energy to not lose that bonus seconds. I did still finish on 10th place. Currently 3rd in GC.

Stage that finished via mass sprint. I again did top 10.

Another flat stage that ended with mass sprint. I'm not the fastest here, but with those routes that aren't fully flat I managed to almost grab a win. Almost!
Top 15:

That was absolutely amazing. I didn't expect that with those terrain inequalities I'll be able to escape with around 4 km to go. And it seems the peloton wasn't able to follow me either. What a win. Now I'm also GC leader. Who would have thought about that?

On this stage the only thing we cared about was to not give breakaway to much space so I could grab a final GC win. What a fantastic first season I had. And this victory on flat stage race is awesome too.

Few words from Claudio Rusconi: I'm absolutely in shock how good my results in first season were. I wasn't expecting much, but the amount of wins I secured is an amazing achievement. I never thought I'll be so successful in my first year. I had hard time deciding whether I want to stay in my team or change it. I decided to change that. I want new goals and races. I finished 2nd in individual continental ranking which I'm really proud of. I think those results can be a great thing for my new team. All I can say now that silently I'm hoping we can get a wild card for one of the Grand Tours next year. I won't tell your which. But you'll see from what country my next team is... you might have an easy guess then. See you in January I guess!

Time to start 2020! What is my team for this year? Euskadi Basque Country - Murias. I'm really looking forward to work with them! First months of the new season are really busy. I hope we can get invitation for Catalunya, because it's my first goal for the year:
First race to start new season. I'm very exciting for it. First one is categorized as hilly, but the only hard part is the final climb to the finish.
I'm actually very out of form so I don't expect my first races this season to end positive for me. We start the final climb.
2 km to go!
Like I thought. Even tho I finished 10th (which is nice), with a bit better form I could be fighting for the top 5. Or even podium.
Top 15:
1 | Carlos Alberto Betancur | Movistar Team | 4h18'25 | 2 | Daniel Felipe Martinez | EF Education First | s.t. | 3 | Tanel Kangert | EF Education First | s.t. | 4 | Gregor Mühlberger | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 5 | Pieter Serry | Deceuninck - Quick-Step | s.t. | 6 | Raul Alarcon | Movistar Team | s.t. | 7 | Thomas De Gendt | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 8 | Cesare Benedetti | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 9 | Gianluca Brambilla | Team INEOS | s.t. | 10 | Claudio Rusconi | Euskadi Basque Country - Murias | s.t. | 11 | Merhawi Kudus | Caja Rural - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 12 | Tosh Van der Sande | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 13 | Omar Fraile | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 14 | Diego Ulissi | UAE Team Emirates | s.t. | 15 | Andrey Amador | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. |
This classic is actually much harder than the previous one and will be much more selective. I have to be careful. Being out of form at the beginning of the season makes everything more difficult.
In the race itself I wasn't feeling quite well. I decided to work for my team-mates at the front, but I don't hope for much here.
I'm already staying behind - 38 km to go.
Things are looking a bit better now. I'm almost empty, but still somehow holding in the first group - 20 km.
Attacks! I can't follow them.
5 km left. Many riders attacked and I'm empty. Can't do anything at all.
The group which I was in for the final sprint wasn't working at all. I launched my sprint and finished in front of them all. Another top 10. Surprisingly, place is higher than in previous race.

Third day and third classic. Again a bit harder than the previous one. If in those two I could finish in the top 10... Maybe I can here too?
I barely survived Coll de Puig Maior - 21 km to the finish and a long downhill now. I can save some energy for final sprint.
Attacks with 6 km left.
I was completely outsprinted by that group. No top 10 this time.

Last classic from a four days route around Spain. Probably the easiest from all four. So it should ends with a sprint from a group with many riders.
Many riders decided to attack on that small climb and descent.

My first stage race in 2020 starts right now. I mostly train and race in Spain now due to my current team. That long TTT is going to destroy our chances at high GC place. I was dropped right before the finish. And we lost a lot of time here. My time was even worse than my team; + 3'36.
Top 10:
1 | Mitchelton - SCOTT | 45'14 | 2 | EF Education First | + 47 | 3 | Movistar Team | + 54 | 4 | Groupama - FDJ | + 1'08 | 5 | Astana Pro Team | + 1'11 | 6 | Team Jumbo - Visma | + 1'20 | 7 | Israel Cycling Academy | + 1'40 | 8 | Lotto Soudal | + 1'48 | 9 | BORA - hansgrohe | + 1'49 | 10 | Team Katusha Alpecin | + 2'04 | 16 | Euskadi Basque Country - Murias | + 3'11 |
Our only chances are breakaways and since we lost quite some time in the opening TTT we might get a chance to grab a win via breakaway. I decided to give it a go today.
I was first on the first climb today.
On 2nd climb I was also first.
And third climb. I might wear a best climber jersey tomorrow if it ends like that now.
I guess it's over. My fellow breakaway rider is out and peloton is right behind us on another 3rd category climb. I think I'll rest in the peloton now.
6 km - like I said, I'm staying behind.
I can be really satisfied. The most important thing is that I was 1st on 4 climbs today and I'll wear best climber jersey tomorrow.

This stage was flat for sprinters. I wasn't taking part in final sprint. I was saving the energy for the next stage so I can defend my best climber jersey.
Top 15:
1 | Elia Viviani | Deceuninck - Quick-Step | 3h48'31 | 2 | Magnus Cort Nielsen | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 3 | Rüdiger Selig | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 4 | Phil Bauhaus | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 5 | Amund Grøndahl Jansen | Team Jumbo - Visma | s.t. | 6 | Jens Keukeleire | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 7 | Nacer Bouhanni | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | s.t. | 8 | Bert-Jan Lindeman | Team Jumbo - Visma | s.t. | 9 | Alejandro Valverde | Movistar Team | s.t. | 10 | Daryl Impey | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 11 | Thomas De Gendt | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 12 | Tim Wellens | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 13 | Thibaut Pinot | Groupama - FDJ | s.t. | 14 | Davide Formolo | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 15 | Sergio Samitier | Euskadi Basque Country - Murias | s.t. | 22 | Claudio Rusconi | Euskadi Basque Country - Murias | s.t. |
Few of the best climbers in the world vs. me. I'm going for a breakaway today! I need to defend my jersey.
It's big and strong breakaway. We can't really escape now.
I won the first mountain sprint today. Damn trees blocking the view!
I think I'm safe in mountain classification.
I'm out of energy. I guess that's all for today. I think I can still win best climber jersey.
We start the final climb of the day with 7.5 km to go.
I'm surprised. I decided to setup a pace perfect for me yet I still managed to finish in the top 10. Really hard but impressive day for me and my team. I'm still best climber in the race.
Top 15:

Last stage is another flat for sprinters with only one 3rd category climb. I guess I won best climber classification in this race and finished in the final top 15 too.

That is a very interesting stage. If I somehow survive that one big climb I can have a chance for decent place.
Now downhill, flat section and finish. I survived that climb while not feeling that good.
5 km to the finish!
Short steep climbs are not my main terrain where I can fight with the best in the world. Somehow I end this race as 9th in GC.

Flat classic for sprinters. It was a really weird sprint. Luke Rowe tried to attack, no one followed him. Many started their sprint pretty late... I was able to finish this classic pretty high placed and I like that.

We start another stage race in Spain with a mass sprint on flat stage.

Now an ITT which I'm not the best in. I was just trying to not lose too much time.

A bit harder stage now. With all those great WT riders I hope I didn't lose much time here. Or who knows, maybe later I can try something for a stage win?
We start that one short, but steep climb with only 10 km to the finish.
Like I said. I decided to attack and I have small gap.
5 km - the peloton and S. Enger are chasing.
We were sadly caught... But you can't win if you don't try it.
Top 15:

That one mountain stage will determine everything in this race.
That final climb looks incredible and really hard.
I decided I should ride that climb with my own pace - 4 km to go.
Oh wow. What a ride and great final push. I didn't expect to finish this stage so high amongst those great climbers. Awesome.
Top 15:
1 | Primoz Roglic | Team Jumbo - Visma | 4h29'27 | 2 | Rigoberto Uran | EF Education First | s.t. | 3 | Claudio Rusconi | Euskadi Basque Country - Murias | + 27 | 4 | Rafal Majka | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 5 | Mikel Landa | Movistar Team | s.t. | 6 | Bernt Charton | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | + 1'29 | 7 | Sergio Andres Higuita | EF Education First | + 1'40 | 8 | Ilnur Zakarin | Team Katusha Alpecin | + 1'47 | 9 | Omar Fraile | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 10 | Andrey Amador | BORA - hansgrohe | + 2'46 | 11 | Raul Alarcon | Movistar Team | s.t. | 12 | Andrea Vendrame | Androni Giocattoli - Sidermec | + 3'22 | 13 | Jack Haig | Mitchelton - SCOTT | + 3'32 | 14 | Rémy Rochas | Team Total Direct Energie | s.t. | 15 | Fernando Barcelo | Euskadi Basque Country - Murias | + 3'48 |
Last stage is again really hard and long. 200 km of pure hills. Let's hope I can defend my very good 5th place in GC.
5 km to go. Now that short and steep climb!
Again very impressive performance here. Many riders were riding faster those first few kms but after I found my pace I did a really great job on finish 5th.
Top 15:
1 | Primoz Roglic | Team Jumbo - Visma | 5h04'54 | 2 | Rafal Majka | Mitchelton - SCOTT | + 12 | 3 | Mikel Landa | Movistar Team | + 33 | 4 | Rigoberto Uran | EF Education First | + 57 | 5 | Claudio Rusconi | Euskadi Basque Country - Murias | + 1'15 | 6 | Sergio Andres Higuita | EF Education First | s.t. | 7 | Jack Haig | Mitchelton - SCOTT | + 1'40 | 8 | Andrea Vendrame | Androni Giocattoli - Sidermec | + 2'18 | 9 | Ilnur Zakarin | Team Katusha Alpecin | + 2'30 | 10 | Andrey Amador | BORA - hansgrohe | + 2'56 | 11 | Omar Fraile | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 12 | Tosh Van der Sande | Lotto Soudal | + 3'24 | 13 | Bernt Charton | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | + 3'42 | 14 | Delio Fernández | Delko Marseille Provence | + 3'55 | 15 | Kosta Konerding | Team Katusha Alpecin | + 4'19 |
It was more than I could expect before the race. Two very good stage results and 5th place overall is great for me and my team. I actually also won youth classification.

Even though it's categorized as flat, those climbs might cause the peloton to split.
Like I thought - 15 km to go and not many riders will be fighting for the victory.
Splits - 6 km to the finish.
Ahh. I was so close. I decided I should setup a pace even though no one really wanted to do so. But I knew it's the best for me as I don't really have a chance versus big peloton.

It's a well known classic. First from many cobble races in early part of the year. I'll do my best to fight against all those WT riders.
I'm all wet and dirty, but what a fun race this was. Whole peloton took part in the final sprint. I was trying to follow Viviani's wheel for the last 15 km, but couldn't do so with less than 5 km to the finish. I'm satisfied with my final sprint. It's another top 10.

After almost 3 weeks break it's yet another classic right before my first main goal for this year. I can't wait for that race to finally start! My current classic is as you can see flat. I expect nothing else than a sprint from almost full peloton.
Another very good sprint and yet another top 10.
Top 15:

Last classic for now. Including cobbles! There are more cobbles than in previous few races so I'm interested to see how I can perform here.
Cobbles made the peloton to split - 20 km to go.
With 15 km to the finish front group had only 22 riders in it.
Oh my! What a fantastic finish that was! The peloton wasn't really trying and they were slowing down the pace after every rider that tried to attack was caught. I decided to setup a pace with 1.5 km to go and started sprint pretty early. Look how good it ended! Who would have thought I can win flat cobble races?

Yes! There is no break! We actually get an invitation to WT race in Catalunya. I'm so excited to come here. It's my first ever WT race so I want to ride that race well. I don't know how I'm going to do it, but I want to finish this race as high in GC as possible. Wish me luck!
First stage is "flat". My team decided that my goal for this race should be final top 30. I think it's pretty accurate and possible to achieve.
Since it was a "flat" stage, it was a mass sprint for a victory.
Top 15:

2nd stage is also not that hard enough to make a big gaps in GC. Another mass sprint.
We decided to create a train for me for final sprint and my team did a great job. I finished 4th.

First of two the most important stages in this race. If I want to finish inside final top 30 I have to be well placed and ride that final climb on my own tempo.
We start the final climb for today - 10 km to go.
3 km to the finish!
What a hard finish it was. I didn't expect to ride that so well. I couldn't catch the first two, but I'm really happy with that. Currently I'm 3rd in GC too.
Top 15:
1 | Egan Bernal | Team INEOS | 4h58'59 | 2 | Pierre Latour | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 3 | Claudio Rusconi | Euskadi Basque Country - Murias | s.t. | 4 | Richard Carapaz | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 5 | Thibaut Pinot | Groupama - FDJ | s.t. | 6 | Sergio Andres Higuita | EF Education First | + 22 | 7 | Julian Alaphilippe | Deceuninck - Quick-Step | s.t. | 8 | Mikel Landa | Movistar Team | s.t. | 9 | Guillaume Martin | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | s.t. | 10 | Chris Froome | Team INEOS | s.t. | 11 | Jack Haig | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 12 | Romain Bardet | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 13 | Lennard Kämna | Team Sunweb | s.t. | 14 | Miguel Angel Lopez | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 15 | Marc Soler | Movistar Team | s.t. |
This is that 2nd stage that will decide almost everything. Again I have to be careful and hope I'll deliver today the result as good as yesterday.
And now we go - 13 km to the line.
No more breakaway and immediately attacks occurred!
4 more km!
It was yet another very good performance by me. I finished 6th with all those great climbers. Actually I'm now 5th in GC.

This hilly stage can create some gaps, but they shouldn't be that big.
We start the final short climb. Breakaway is still up front.
I decided to attack! I feel well, so why not?
We caught 17 riders from breakaway! What a mess right now right before the summit.
5 km to go. P. Bilbao 57" up front.
P. Bilbao had too much time. We couldn't catch him. Again I finished in the top 10.

The very last stage of this very successful race. It's still dangerous because those laps on 2nd half today can create some interesting things.
2 more laps. Problem is there is still massive breakaway up front - 17 riders with 1'15" lead.
Last lap! 8 km to the finish.
I decided to attack!
I finished 2nd! From the peloton. There were still some riders from the breakaway before me at the finish line. It was strange there was no gaps.

That was a really good race for me and my team. My goal was final top 30. I wasn't expecting being 5th! I had also few decent stage results. That was my WT race debut.

April/May part of the year:
We are back to another hilly classic. Actually, I'm even one of the outsiders for today. Our goal is to finish inside top 10.
With 30 km to go, this is what was left from the front group.
10 km to go - only 16 riders are in front group.
3 km - this is what awaits us.
What an another awesome victory right there. Last short climb was really hard and I wasn't expecting this to happen. I was completely out with those last few pushes, but somehow I managed to win. Impressive.
Top 15:
1 | Claudio Rusconi | Euskadi Basque Country - Murias | 4h57'11 | 2 | David De la Cruz | Team INEOS | s.t. | 3 | Andrey Amador | BORA - hansgrohe | + 18 | 4 | George Bennett | Team Jumbo - Visma | + 43 | 5 | Joao Rodrigues | W52 / FC Porto | + 51 | 6 | Omar Fraile | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 7 | Jesus Herrada | Movistar Team | + 1'08 | 8 | Daniel Felipe Martinez | EF Education First | s.t. | 9 | Ben Hermans | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | + 1'30 | 10 | Felix Grossschartner | BORA - hansgrohe | + 1'38 | 11 | Carlos Verona | Caja Rural - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 12 | Jonas Vingegaard | Team Jumbo - Visma | s.t. | 13 | Odd Christian Eiking | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | + 1'56 | 14 | Tao Geoghegan Hart | Team INEOS | s.t. | 15 | Jay McCarthy | BORA - hansgrohe | + 2'25 |
This was scheduled for sprinters. I tried to fight for high place as always, but I tried also to save as much energy as possible. Because on the very next day... there is yet another race I want in to perform on the very high note.
I tried to surprise other sprinters by starting my sprint a bit earlier. And I think they were seriously in shock because I again did an amazing sprint. This time to finish 2nd.

Another WT invitation! After successful Catalunya, this time my team have a chance to ride in Basque Country. All 6 stages are important, but the problem is, even though I'm still in form, I did not feel well. I hope it's just for today and not something serious.
It's actually one of the easiest stages in Basque Country, but the front group right before the final climb have only 49 riders in it.
Even less than that participated in the final sprint.
Top 15:

Decent start. Now a bit harder stage. Especially for me. It might be a flu. I just hope it won't influance me much.
We start the final climb for today.
8 km to the finish. I'm with Alaphilippe and Jungels. The group is right behind us.
We caught the front two! And we have 30" gap over the peloton.
Jungels is out! Alaphilippe a bit blocked. Can I win it?
Wow... not against Alaphilippe. That sprint was so fast. Look at the gap at the finish!
