Matteo Trentin and Michael "Bling" Matthews were the biggest names in terms of sprinters in California and both got their moments of glory both in terms of stages as well as leader's jersey.
The most crucial stages for the GC were the fifth stage which went up to Mount Baldy and the time - trial in the sixth stage. The stage up to Mount Baldy was brutal and we saw some serious time gaps between the favorites. George Bennett proved to have the freshest legs in the last kilometer and managed to grab the stage win. The only rider that did not lose time to Bennett was Bob Jungels.
Bennett celebrates at the top of Mt. Baldy
Not being able to distance Jungels was not ideal for Bennett in terms of GC and even though the Kiwi became the leader of the race after the queen stage he failed to keep the yellow jersey after the time - trial. Despite only coming third in the stage, behind Tony Martin and Van Garderen, Jungels did more than enough to take the yellow jersey and the overall win as he was one minute faster than Bennett.
Bob Jungels knew exactly what he had to do in the time - trial

13 riders went clear today and no less than four of them were from Nippo. Among them, the blue jersey wearer, Givoanni Lonardi. The breakaway might have a chance today given how tricky the last half of the stage looks
And indeed with 20 kilometers to go the advantage of the breakaway looked big enough to survive until the end of the stage. Only the seven strongest riders in the breakaway would survive though as they left their fellow escapes on the ups and downs of the final kilometers: Gouchard, Geschke, Canola, Cima, Laengen, Schar and Montaguti.
The finish line comes quite quickly after the last downhill of the day so having a good position on the downhill will be crucial for those who want the stage win. Geschke looked really strong in the final but was not able to get away from the others as Canola stuck to his wheel on the downhill with the others not far behind either
The best sprinter of the group, Marco Canola took advantage of his great position after the downhill and had no problems taking today's win. A great move from Nippo, who with 4 riders in front made sure the breakaway would give the pack a fair fight. Geschke faded away in the final kilometer and even lost the second place to Alexis Gougeard
There were some events in the pack as well with plenty of falls and breaks in the pack on the last part of the stage. Majka and Roglic got away on the downhill but in the end they were registered with the same time as the rest of the riders that still hold hopes for a good GC after the previous stages.
Not all of the riders with high ranking in the GC survived the stage actually as two of the performers from the previous stages found themselves in trouble after crashing. Ilnur Zakarin lost 4'40 to the main group today, while Dylan Teuns was even unluckier as he was forced to abandon the race.

With 6 flat stage this seemed like the perfect race for Dylan Groenewegen and the Dutchman got a great start to the race after winning the first stage. Things would get worse after this stage though as he fell ill and was forced to eventually abandon the race.
Groenewegen won in the rain but it came with a price
With Groenewegen out we had a very opened race with each stage having a different winner. The stage that did the most damage to the GC stage was the fourth stage which saw only 12 riders finishing in the front group and Mike Teunissen taking the stage win after a great team work by Jumbo.
Teunissen wins the hardest stage of the race
Disaster stroke once again for Jumbo in the fifth stage as with less than 10 kilometers the finish line Van Aert and Teunissen crashed ruining both of their hopes for the GC. Out of the 12 survivors of the fourth stage, Bryan Coquard got the best out of the bonus seconds to win the overall.

We already had a time - trial with a climb at the end in the first day of the Giro, but compared with this one that one looks like children's play. It was clear from the first riders that finished the course that we will see some big gaps today even between the favorites.
Quintana didn't have a great week so far as he found himself almost two minutes down in the GC. Today things would get even worse as at the end of the day he would more than 6 minutes behind the pink jersey wearer
The Yates brothers have been matched pretty evenly so far. That did not change today as Simon was only seven seconds faster than Adam. Not bad times for the Mitchelton riders but far from a great ones as well
Vinvenzo Nibali seems like the Italians best bet to win the Giro this year. Today he had a decent ride but nothing spectacular finishing with 1h02'04
Richie Porte is still looking for that one GC to prove that he is more than a one week rider. It looks like this Giro won't be that one though as today he was slower than Nibali by 34 seconds in a stage where he should be winning time on the Italian
The first big time by the GC riders was set by Geraint Thomas today. The Ineos rider finished with a time that was 1 minute and 31 seconds faster than Nibali's
The white jersey will be a Colombian affair this year. Lopez wore it at the start of the stage but it will be Bernal who will have it at the end as Lopez lost nearly one minute to his compatriot and 1 minute and 37 seconds to Thomas
Konrad had a great first week, winning one stage and nearly winning a second one. He continues his great start of the Giro with a good time today, enough for a top 10, but 1 minute and 27 seconds behind Thomas
Roglic had a slower start to the stage and was quite behind Thomas at the first intermediate check points. He shook things up on the climb though and managed to beat the Brit's time by 19 seconds at the finish line
Dumoulin came second in the opening time - trial, but then took the pink jersey after winning two hilly stages. Today he was flying at all intermediate check points and he took his revenge on Roglic after the loss from the first stage. The Sunweb rider crossed the line 39 seconds than the Slovenian!

We're back in Il Giro after the rest day with a very flat stage, ideal ground for the sprinters.
Ewan and Viviani had the best trains as their teams battle for the front positions inside the last 3 kilometers, with the other sprinters just being happy following their wheels
Alvaro Hodeg pulled out an amazing lead out for Viviani and the Italian Champion entered the last kilometer with quite a gap to the rest of the field
But he was not strong enough to keep his speed and he bottled with 300 meters to go as he was passed by both Ewan and Sam Bennett
And it's Ewan who is first across the finish line! Primoz Roglic kept up with the sprinters today and it was a good move by the Slovenian as there was a slip in the back which saw both Bora riders from the top 10 in the GC losing time. No other big fishes were caught in the net

Another flat stage with no categorized climbs on the route in Il Giro. And this time we have some strong wind. There were no gaps made but the pack was pretty thinned and with 3 kilometers to go it was the GC riders who were at the front as the sprinters were caught behind
Two sprinters managed to survive the wind though and will battle for the win: Jakub Mareczko and Alexander Kristoff. The Norwegian would sure love a third stage win here. He is the only sprinter with more than one stage win this year
But it was not meant to be for Kristoff today. Mareczko had a far better position in the final and was able to keep his position to grab the stage win for CCC. A great win for the orange guys as they missed out on a stage win with Geschke a few days ago

We finally enter the high mountains in Il Giro with a category one climb on today's route. The climb is too far from the finish to be decisive in the stage but the little kick at the end of the stage will make for some interesting racing.
14 riders went in the breakaway today but by the time the summit of the category one climb was reached only Julien Bernard had survived as he was joined by Primoz Roglic who had gotten clear from the group of favorites in the last kilometer of the climb. Roglic being second at the top means that he will take over the blue jersey from Lonardi. The Italian's adventure seems to end here, but it sure was a great one
The duo would get a maximum advantage of around 1 minute on the downhill but they would eventually be caught on the flat section that followed as the other favorites found sounds team - mates to do the chase for them
After Roglic and Bernard were caught the tempo of the front group slowed down quite considerably and a lot of riders got back. The white jersey wearer had real come back story managing to get back to the favorites group after being more than 3 minutes down at the top of the climb
With such a big group the last uphill section of the day and the small downhill that will follow will be crucial the stage win. And as soon as we reach the small hill, Jumbo go to the front of the group to set up the pace
The finish will be right after the downhill ends and the Jumbo duo of De Plus and Roglic are in the driving seat for the stage win. They have to thank Robert Gesink for this as the Dutchman did a fantastic work on the last slopes of the day

Yesterday we entered the mountains. Today we have the first high altitude finish to Lagu Serru. It's going to be a brutal stage with other two category 1 climbs on the route as well.
We had some very interesting names in the breakaway today: Soler, Martinez, O'Connor, Cattaneo, Ciccone and Reichenbach. Despite this none of them would be able to survive until the end. The only one who comes out of this stage with something palpable will be Ciccone as the Italian will be wearing the blue jersey on the podium at the end of the day
Nibali was very aggressive in the final kilometers of the climb and although he was able to do some damage 5 other riders were able to follow him throughout all of his accelerations: Thomas, Dumoulin, Roglic, Zakarin and Lopez
As we approached the summit the high effort started to ask for its tribute and all of the riders seemed spent and we saw the front group split into 3 of 2 riders each. The situation with 1km to go was: Thomas with Dumoulin at the front, followed by Nibali and Roglic and then Lopez and Zakarin
Zakarin seemed to be the only one with anything left in his legs and he dropped Lopez in the final kilometer, then flied by the Nibali-Roglic duo to go after the front two. The Russian would sure love a stage win after the bad luck he had in the first week where he saw his GC ranking ruined by a crash
But he's not strong enough to make the final jump and he does not catch the leading duo. It will be between Thomas and Dumoulin for today's win
And it's Thomas who gets it! It's not a fourth stage win for Dumoulin but the Sunweb rider will be very pleased to not lose any time on the road in the first real test of this Giro

Plenty of climbing today which will definitely make Roglic and Jumbo regret the events of yesterday that forced Tolhoek out of the race after a crash. With the Dutchman out, Roglic is now left with two main helpers in the mountains: Gesink and De Plus.
We had a huge breakaway group today, consisting of no less than 34 riders. This was not on Ciccone's liking as he even though he was present in the group he did not manage to grab as many points as he had hoped in a stage with four categorized climbs apart from the final climb.
Only two riders would be able to survive from the breakaway in the very cold weather conditions and snow of today though as they attacked from the front group on the penultimate climb of the day to take an advantage good enough for the stage win: Simon Yates and Emanuel Buchmann
We had plenty of action in the favorites group on the penultimate climb of the day as well with Roglic testing Dumoulin once again but the pink jersey had no problem to follow the Slovenian. They were joined by Thomas, Bernal, Nibali and some remains from the breakaway at the top of the climb and on the downhill that followed
A few more riders managed to join the favorites group at the bottom of the last climb of the day as they slowed down as soon as the downhill was finished. The first one and the only important name for the GC to do so was Nairo Quintana
Meanwhile at the front of the race Yates and Buchmann rode the final kilometers being happy with just staying in front of the favorites and let everything be decided in the final kilometer. And it was a close one with Yates taking the win by only just in front of the Bora rider
The favorites group broke again in the last kilometers but this time Quintana wasn't caught out and was able to follow Roglic, Nibali, Thomas and Dumoulin, with the Sunweb rider taking third and further extending his lead due to the bonus seconds
It was Bernal who lost the contact with the other favorites as they accelerated on the final slopes of the climb. It would still be enough for Colombian to move back into the white jersey though as his compatriot, Lopez, one of yesterday's performers did not enjoy today's weather and came in 4 and a half behind the pink jersey group

Not as much climbing as in the previous days but we could see some time gaps between the GC favorites today as well.
13 riders went in the breakaway, including the blue jersey wearer, Giulio Ciccone. Four of them attacked on the first category climb to go on for the stage win while the others were slowly caught by the pack. The four attackers were: Pinot, Buchmann, Spilak and Soler. Buchmann with another attempt today after his second place of yesterday
With the pack not far behind them, the four had to ride the last two climbs of the day at a very hard pace and at the top of the last climb Soler was in the lead followed by Pinot and then Buchmann, who seems to be paying for his previous efforts. Spilak had already been caught by the pack but the other 3 seem to have enough to make it till the end
In the pack, Roglic was determined to not give Dumoulin a day off and he made a move at the top of the final climb, but with Sunweb having plenty of riders still left in the main group it will be quite difficult for the Slovenian to gain any time today
At the front, Pinot caught up with Soler on the downhill but the Spaniard was clearly stronger in the sprint and crossed the finish line first. A redeeming stage win for Movistar who are not having the greatest of races so far
Roglic finished right behind Buchmann and even though he did maintain the gap he had to the favorites group at the top of the climb, it was not enough to be awarded a time gap which means the GC podium stays the same as yesterday with one week left of racing

We are back after the rest day with the final week of this year's Giro. And what a stage do we have on our hands today - Cima Coppi on Passo di Gavia and then we take on the mighty Mortirolo. Despite its summit being quite far away from the finish, Mortirolo is the place where we should see the big moves being made as the last climb of the day is not steep enough to create any significant time gaps.
13 riders got away from the pack today. Among them was the blue jersey wearer, Ciccone who wanted to honor his jersey on the Cima Coppi. He was only second at the top of Gavia though as Soler messed up his plans
Ciccone would take his revenge on Mortirolo as he was the first across the top proving everyone he is a very deserved wearer of the blue jersey and making a strong statement for the stage win as well
Barely any action in the pack on Mortirolo as everybody from the riders that are still in contention for the podium/pink jersey seemed happy with just not losing any time today. Only S. Yates tried something but his action was shortly lived and he was caught on the downhill down from Mortirolo
In the front, Ciccone was caught by Reichenbach and Majka at the foot of the last climb. The three would be the only survivors of the breakaway and they would settle the stage win between themselves
Majka and Reichenbach seemed to have give all of their energy when chasing down Ciccone as they almost did not contest the final sprint which results in a easy looking win for Ciccone. But with Gavia and Mortirolo on the route there was nothing easy about this win
Dumoulin and Roglic led the favorites group across the finish line as we see yet another day without any time gaps between the best four riders in the general classification.

Happy with yesterday's result, Giulio Ciccone did not make the breakaway today despite quite a few riders being able to do so. Second in the mountains classification, Marc Soler was there. And his team seemed determined to put him in blue as two of their riders guard him at the top of the first climb of the day
With no big climbs on the route, Ciccone must have believed his jersey was safe but at the end of the day it would be Soler who would walk up on the podium to receive it. Today also marked the first stage in a while not won by a breakaway.
With 1 kilometer to go Colombia was at power with Bernal leading the favorites group, with Uran right in his wheel. Their compatriot, Lopez was not having such a great day as he was 3 minutes down the road from the front group! His strike of bad days seems to just be getting bigger
Bernal looks really good for the stage win with 600 meters to go as Uran has cracked and a gap was created as a result a small gap was created between Bernal and the others
Dumoulin and Nibali are determined to give the young Colombian a run for his money today as they move closer to the Ineos rider with 300 meters to go. Bernal might have to wait a little longer for his first GT stage win
It's a close finish but Dumoulin is the first across the line today. A fourth stage win for the pink jersey wearer this year. The Dutchman is flying!

Despite some strong riders taking part in it such as Giro stage winner, Damiano Cima and Jumbo duo of Van Emden and Lindeman, the breakaway would not make it today as the pack was determined to not miss on the last opportunity for a mass sprint in this Giro
Once we entered the mountains, Elia Viviani withdrew from the race so there was no point in Deceuninck setting something up for today and Lotto were had no rivals today as they tried to put Ewan in the best position possible
Jakub Mareczko tried to surprise the Australian with a early move under the flamme rouge. Ewan was quick to react though and closely followed the CCC rider's wheel, with Viviani's lead out, Alvargo Hodeg and Nizzolo behind him
Mareczko was not able to keep the speed up in the final kilometer and it was Ewan and Nizzolo who went head to head for the stage win
And it's Ewan who takes it! Another one for the Australian as he moves into third in the points classification, but this jersey seemed forbidden for sprinters this year with Tom Dumoulin taking 4 stage wins and confiscating the jersey

After Movistar dedicated themselves to the blue jersey a couple of stages ago, it was now Trek's time to do the same for Ciccone. Soler missed out on the breakaway today so this was an ideal opportunity for the Italin to move back into the blue jersey
The 24 riders that went into the breakaway today started the last climb with a little over two minutes over the pack. It's not a lot but it could be enough for the best climbers in that group to contest the stage win today
It was a full day for Trek today. Busy at the front as well as in the pack with Richie Porte being the first favorite to make a move today. We haven't seen a lot of him so far despite being 7th in the GC so he must be having good legs today
Roglic was the first to respond to the Australian's acceleration as they start catching up to some of the breakaway riders that were dropped by their fellow escapees
Very soon it was Dumoulin who accelerate in the favorites group to catch up with Roglic and Porte. The Trek rider isn't exactly a rival for Dumoulin being more than 9 minutes behind in the GC, but Roglic definitely is!
No moves yet from Nibali nor Thomas, who seem happy to ride in the pace of the favorites group. Well the second tier of favorites since Roglic and Dumoulin are up on the road and seem to be gaining time on them at the moment
At the front of the race three riders distanced themselves from the other survivors of the breakaway and will looking to settle the stage win between themselves. Pello Bilbao is there and will be looking for his first stage win in this Giro, while the other two, Simon Yates and De Plus have already got one in the bag
Back to the GC battle, it looks like Nibali and Thomas are indeed not having a very good day and we see the big four split into two now with Roglic and Dumoulin still going very strong and looking to win some time today
It won't be Bilbao's first win of this Giro today. Instead it will be Simon Yates who puts another stage trophy next to his name. The Brit is not doing well in the GC but will be happy to call this Giro a success
Dumoulin and Roglic arrive together at the finish line, putting 35 seconds between themselves and the Thomas-Nibali group. Roglic moves into second in the GC now, while the podium seems to be more and more out of reach for Nibali

With one HC climb, two second category climbs plus the final climb if the breakaway could make it till there this seemed like a great stage to settle the fight for the blue jersey. But Soler seems to have given up on it as he was not in the breakaway today. Ciccone was and he enjoyed showing off his jersey at the top of the climbs
Despite a strong, large group that went away, the breakaway would not make it to the finish so we will have the opportunity to see the GC riders going for the stage win. Thomas and Nibali lost time yesterday and today are on the move. They are joined by Quintana
Weird move by Movistar as Soler is chasing down the attackers in the favorites group. Surely he must know that the battle for blue is over by now and even winning this climb would not make a difference as Ciccone must have already opened a bottle of champagne a few minutes down the road
Not a Giro for Thomas this weekend it seems. He was the one who initiated the attack and now appears to be cracking as he could not keep up with neither Nibali nor Quintana and now is struggling keep up with Roglic-Dumoulin group
The shark loves water and Nibali seems to be having a great day in the terrible weather conditions we had today. He is alone in the lead with 1 kilometer to go. Behind him, a chasing group consisting of Dumoulin, Roglic and Quintana has formed
Nibali was first at the summit but the chasers caught up with him in the downhill. Thomas seems to have recovered as well and he is no far behind. He is saving his Giro podium right here
Roglic put in everything he had in staying with Dumoulin and Quintana on the climb and then in chasing down Nibali on the downhill and he is fading away in the last corner of the stage as the other 3 will go on to fight for the stage win
It won't be a podium in the GC for Nibali this year and it won't be a stage win either. The Italian comes up empty handed out of this Giro with Quintana saving some of his race here by grabbing the stage win

Here we are in Verona for the final stage of this year's Giro. Sadly, there's nothing left to fight for except the stage win as all the jersey winners seems to be decided as well as the overall podium.
Adam Yates was hoping for a good GC here but he was not able to follow the strongest riders in the mountains. He rode very well though and which allowed him to save appearances with a top 10 finish overall.
Nibali would be disappointed to come out empty handed after this Giro. He could have a shot at the stage win today as he is the fastest rider at the time of his finish: 21'36
It was indeed a very good time by Nibali as Thomas is not able to beat it. He is 9 seconds slower than the Italian. Thomas will have to settle with a third place overall next to his name in this Giro
Thomas was not able to beat Nibali's time, but Roglic. Primoz was just 3 seconds faster than Nibali. Is this enough for his and Jumbo's third win in the race?
It is not. It will be Dumoulin's fifth though as the Sunweb rider smashes Roglic's time - 12 seconds faster.
What a race it has been for the Dutchman. Not losing any seconds to his rivals in the mountains and then adding stage wins in time - trials and hilly stages.
Tom Dumoulin - the man of the hour

Very good Giro, always hard to miss an important GC win when you are close, but 2nd in Giro is a great result.
