Schedule Reveal #1: Toms Skujins
FL | MO | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | PR | 70 | 70 | 83 | 59 | 80 | 77 | 73 | 67 | 68 | 76 | 66 | 66 | 59 |
Date | Country | Race | | Race Days | Role | 10-Jan | | Badaling International | PT | 2 | Leader | 15-Feb | | Classique du Grand-Duché | PT | 2 | Leader | 7-Mar | | Vuelta al Pais Vasco | PTHC | 6 | Leader | 20-Mar | | Strade Bianche | PTHC | 2 | Leader | 30-Apr | | Amstel Gold Race | PT | 2 | Leader | 3-May | | Fleche Wallone | PT | 2 | Leader | 7-May | | Liege - Bastogne - Liege | PTM | 2 | Leader | 12-May | | Scandinavia Open | PTHC | 3 | Leader | 11-Aug | | Volta a Portugal | PTHC | 11 | Leader | 4-Sep | | Balkans International | PTHC | 8 | Leader | 18-Oct | | Giro di Lombardia | PTM | 2 | Leader |
Skujins is the one Evonik rider where we dont have to talk about his role a lot because he is our leader whenever he is on the startlist.
His focus for the season is on one day races and he will race seven of them this season and all feature hilly terrains of varying difficulty. For the first time since joining Evonik - ELKO this includes Classique du Grand Duche as we decided that he should not use his race days in the clashing Tirreno - Adriatico.
His schedule also includes some obvious hilly stage races like Pais Vasco, Scandinavia or Balkans International which should be no surprise to see him attending. A bigger surprise might be that he attends Volta a Portugal where he will compete against top puncheurs like Bobridge and several strong stage racers from both PT and PCT.
A noticable change from the last few seasons is that he won't ride in Tasmania but that hasnt been amongst his favourite races in the last few seasons. In 2016 he lost his chances to score well with a crash and in 2017 he finished on a disappointing 46th place. Perhaps the other races will suit him better.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Skujins at Portugal sucks, how could you have this idea? well, at least it may animate both him and Bobridge (and whoever 80+ puncheur is attending) to fight for line honors in several stages. Need to get rid of riders like Yates

It fit in nicely into his race days as i only had to sacrifize Tasmania (plus picking The Big Shower Classic in the triple header) for Portugal and guys like Ponzi or Bobrodge surely wouldnt go there because Ponzi has too few RDs and Bobridge cannot fit in all hilly stage races with a TT and all hilly classics.... right?
More working power on hilly stage isnt a bad thing as it could raise the pressure on the climbers

Haha, I see your point. Too bad I had other ideas but I agree. We should double-team to destroy all climbers!

Ah about that, can you ask your guys to take Costa along in the hills of Portugal so that he doesn't drop too far back and then takes advantage in the TT?

Yep, let's all work together to destroy those climbers. Puncheurs are cooler anyway, right?

Schedule Reveal #2: Michael Van Stayen
FL | MO | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | PR | 76 | 64 | 79 | 60 | 76 | 71 | 80 | 69 | 84 | 78 | 73 | 63 | 60 |
Date | | Race | Cat. | RDs | Role | 21-Jan | | Tour of Qatar | PT | 6 | Leader | 13-Feb | | Tirreno-Adriatico | PT | 7 | Leader | 25-Feb | | Milano San Remo | PTM | 2 | Leader | 14-Mar | | Praha - Karlovy Vary - Praha | PT | 4 | Sprinter | 20-Mar | | Ronde van Nederland | PT | 3 | Leader | 26-Apr | | Lisbon Classic | PTHC | 2 | Leader | 30-Apr | | Amstel Gold Race | PT | 2 | Co-Leader | 3-May | | Fleche Wallone | PT | 2 | Co-Leader | 12-May | | Scandinavia Open | PTHC | 3 | Co-Leader | 8-Jun | | Riga - Jurmala GP | PTHC | 2 | Leader | 3-Oct | | GP Moscow | PT | 2 | Leader | 13-Oct | | Tour of Tasmania | PT | 3 | Leader |
The schedule of Michael Van Stayen is probably our leader with the most interesting schedule reveal as a rider like him has opportunities in a lot of races.
As our best sprinter he will lead us in typical sprint races in Qatar, Moscow, Riga, or Lisbon and will also be our sprint leader for the two flat stages in Praha.
His abilities on the hills will be used in Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallone and in Scandinavia to support Skujins and perhaps get a result himself too.
His schedule is completed by lots of races where he can combine his sprint strength with his ability to ride over hills and we hope that he can get results in races like Tirreno-Adriatico, Ronde van Nederlands or maybe even in Tasmania. And of course he will try to repeat his Milan San Remo victory.

Not at Paris - Nice. I like. Obviously, will beat Howard in some other occasions, but who cares?

He climbed so high in the new OVR formula that a GT didnt look too interesting - especially with a couple of interesting new alternatives on the schedule. I do like that you are worried about MvS in a GT though
tsmoha: Especially stage 2+3 in Paris-Nice look very nice but i hope that he can also get a solid GC result in Tirreno on top of stage points. Keep your faith for nederlands, no need to ruin your mood already now
gustav: Surely i sense some fears about a strong puncheurs startlist in Portugal....
sotd: mvs was the least likely attending top sprinter anyway. Few RDs, more good alternatives than the other top guys and the Vuelta being a good alternative as well.

Schedule Reveal #3: Greg Van Avermaet

Water is wet, Evonik doesnt sign time triallists and Greg Van Avermaet leads all non-clashing cobble races - some things dont have to be mentioned.
The rest of his schedule is probably more interesting. Greg Van Avermaet is still a good hilly sprinter capable of stage wins when leading in weaker startlists - although obviously not quite as good as Van Stayen as he proved during the last two seasons. He also is a solid puncheur who can do well in hilly classics as he also proved at times last year so the question is: How did we plan his season outside of the cobbled season:
This might be surprising to some guys but his 43 race days were enough to participate in 17 races throughout the season and he will not lead in a single other race all season long:
He will be one of the key domestiques for Toms Skujins in four hilly classics: Classique du Grand-Duche, Amstel Gold Race, Liege - Bastogne - Liege and Giro di Lombardia. The aim is to help Toms Skujins onto the podium with the hope that Van Avermaet can score top 30 results himself too.
He will also be the most important helper for Michael Van Stayen in six races. He already proved last season in Milano - San Remo, Lisbon Classic and GP Moscow that he can be a force as a 2nd man in this kind of classics and he will participate in those races again as well as the hope that he can do similar things in Ronde van Nederland and Riga - Jurmala too. He also will take a more standard leadout role for the two flat stages in Praha.
I'm very curious about your opinion. Would you have done the same thing or would you have done sth else with him?

Genuinely appalled that no single former strava rider was signed by Evonik. #MakePottsEvonikAgain
that said, team looks sublime. Van Stayen is such a beast and GVA may still have hope for that monument win somewhere down the road

Im genuinely disappointed about that too and surprised as well. Lasse N Hansen was high on my shortlist until ten minutes into transfers when trek went bonkers. I expected Potts to get a bit too expensive but that Marzuki would get a 6figure wage is madness. Gaudin had a wage that was 5k too high in the end. And actually i had the thread to sign Timmy Dupont or Van Wyk typed already but decided i wanted to sign someone else.

Schedule Reveal #4: Andris Vosekalns
FL | MO | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | PR | 66 | 78 | 75 | 62 | 69 | 73 | 72 | 51 | 67 | 71 | 81 | 68 | 62 |
Date | | Race | Cat. | RDs | Role | 10-Jan | | Badaling International | PT | 2 | Key Domestique | 15-Feb | | Paris-Nice | PT | 8 | Leader | 28-Feb | | Pro Hallstatt Classic | PTHC | 2 | Leader | 3-Apr | | Giro d'Italia | PTM | 21 | Leader | 11-May | | Vuelta a Espana | PTM | 21 | Leader | 8-Jun | | Tour de Suisse | PT | 9 | Leader | 11-Aug | | Volta a Portugal | PTHC | 11 | Key Domestique / Co-Leader | 18-Oct | | Giro di Lombardia | PTM | 2 | Key Domestique |
As our best climber, Andris Vosekalns will race the majority of the season as our fourth leader. He had enough race days to ride three Grand Tours but we decided to only send him to two GTs because we expect more strong riders to go for two Grand Tours which hopefully results in bigger opportunities in shorter races. Paris-Nice and Tour de Suisse and the PTHC Pro Hallstadt Classic are the shorter races where he will have undisputed leader roles.
He also races the PTHC race Volta a Portugal where Evonik starts with Toms Skujins as our leader and Vosekalns as one of his key domestiques but if the hilly stages provide smaller gaps than expected then he might move into a more GC focussed role himself.
His participation in the season opening Badaling International and Giro di Lombardia will be strictly limited to a support role.

I don't think there's really a viable other approach for him. Already the cobbles provides him with ample leadership opportunity; and the support role then takes him to the next best races for him anyway. Particularly with the crazy team results Evonik are capable of
One of the reasons I was glad to bring in Reimer, was to have a quality support for Van der Lijke in the same way that GVA is for MVS. And that's even when it may make less of a difference for me, than it would for a likely 3-star favourite in Van Stayen. And while the lack of cobbled skill obviously means more stage leadership opportunities for Reimer elsewhere, I don't really have too high expectations on the 75 Hill / 77 Sprint combo being allowed to deliver.

I think he could have scored decently in a couple of less frequented races like possibly Dauphine (with Riga and Suisse both clashing) and one could have gone more for either hills or sprints where I'm taking a bit of the middle road. Taking him out of Qatar because i'm not really expecting evonik trains is a decision that could be quite bad particularly with the chances of "the crazy team results".

Fan favourite, manager's darling and Evoniks only rider capable of riding against the clock. His calendar basically includes every time trial with less than ten kilometres on our schedule and a couple of flat races where he will be an important domestique for Michael Van Stayen. He will also slide into our cobbles squad for Paris-Roubaix, Ronde Van Vlaanderen and Tour of Northern Europe where we hope that his strength on the flat roads will be a valuable asset in the first of half of these races.
