I just re-read your TDU. lucky bastard, mine had 60-70 km winds most stages, making bunch sprints impossible (the sprinters "died" in the wind) and the field had Freire, Boonen, Hushovd, etc.

anyway, what are your expectations for each of the 3 guys for the GTs?

Yeah, winds are harsh in 08!
Well, i fully expect to meet the sponsor demands at least, which is top3 Vuelta, top5 tour de france. And if i can get a top5 placing in the tour i can get a top5 in the giro. So i guess that's my expectations. I dont think a victory is in the cards this season.

Stage 4 is up. With a rather large climb just before the finish. Koldo Fernandez is probably out of the question. Let's see what happens. We join the race at 69km to go, a pack of 9 have a 3:36 lead on the pack when, surprisingly, Thomas Dekker decides to follow Zaballa on a raid!
img529.imageshack.us/img529/6886/thpcm0001vv3.jpg

A bit worried about Dekker and the likes of Camano in the front group, we assisnt QuickStep in the work to bring them back.
img57.imageshack.us/img57/38/thpcm0006ut7.jpg

Camano goes on his own, and then all hell breaks loose. Valverde and Gutierrez jump over the top of the hill. Now it's Gutierrez, Camano, Valverde, Astarloza.
Asterloza is burning energy trying to latch onto Valverde.

img242.imageshack.us/img242/3059/thpcm0009gf0.jpg

Kolde Fernandez can only watch the proceedings from behind the pack.
img512.imageshack.us/img512/9016/thpcm0012hg9.jpg

Landaluze is keeping himself at the front of the Peleton if an opportunity presents itself.
img57.imageshack.us/img57/6497/thpcm0013zx8.jpg

Astarloza has caught Valverde and Camano and still has some gas to spare. He attacks to distance Valverde in the sprint! Gutierrez is nowhere to be seen and has a 40 second lead over the chasers!

img512.imageshack.us/img512/4579/thpcm0014nl7.jpg

Gutierrez in style. We should've paid more attention to the GCE rider today.
img514.imageshack.us/img514/758/thpcm0016ys8.jpg

But how about that. Astarlozas small advantage gives him the edge as he stays out of Valverdes reach and finishes 2nd. Camano is 3rd.

5th and final day of the Vuelta a Mallorca. It's a hilly one, and we might be able to rack up another stagewin or snag the pointsjersey with Astarloza. It's slow and steady untill Capecchi of Sanuer Duval and Xavi Tondo of LA-MSS break away with 40km to go. Smaller groups are scattered in front of the peleton. You can just make out Klöden trying to catch them a 1:23 behind them.
img242.imageshack.us/img242/5536/thpcm0023ey5.jpg

At 30km It's still Capecchi and Tondo in front, and they're still going really fast!
The pursuers have come together in a big group of 11 about a minute ahead of the chasing pack.
img529.imageshack.us/img529/3678/thpcm0024ag5.jpg

16,3km to go. The large group is nearly hauled back in. And we're 3km from the top of the last hill. Landaluze is going to do some work for Asterloza. We'll send Landaluze on the attack and put Astarloza on his wheel. Hopefully Astaloza can pick up enough points to grab the green jersey!
img512.imageshack.us/img512/1331/thpcm0025at1.jpg

And we get a good gap! 11km to go, the lads look down and power forward!
img529.imageshack.us/img529/8570/thpcm0028dw7.jpg

Freire and Trofimov managed to get a bigger gap than my boys and are ahead by 30 seconds. They're coming close to Capecchi and Tondo now. But at 1600m it looks like the duo is gonna hold out.
img242.imageshack.us/img242/1629/thpcm0031en5.jpg

And they do. Tondo takes the stage by a wheels length while Freire takes care of 3rd.
img514.imageshack.us/img514/1890/thpcm0032dg5.jpg

We cross the line 45 seconds after. Boonen is much too strong in the sprint and will win the green jersey in front of Astarloza. There's a good gap back to the pack though and we should advance a bit in the GC.
img512.imageshack.us/img512/8678/thpcm0033ey9.jpg

And here come the GCE boys at 1:38 after Tondo and Capecchi.

Managers thoughts
We did allright in this race. Our ambitions for Asterloza took a hit from the get-go as he was caught in a split in the peleton. We grabbed some stagewins and decent results. And again, for the 2nd time running we're edged out of a jerseys competition by a few points. We've got one rider, Landaluze, in the top 5 and Astarloza just outside the top 10.Morale is high in the camp. Astarloza likes this race and is happy with his stagewin. Also served us well in building up some condition.

The rest of february will serve as a fitness improvement. We'll take a look at the march schedule a little later on. I can allready tell you about the next race we'll be following closely though. It'll be the Paris-Nice at the beginning of next month.

See you then!

Race Schedule, March
img529.imageshack.us/img529/6601/thpcm0043uh6.jpg

Allthough the Vuelta Murcia is also at the beginning of march. We wont be bringing our fit riders there as it collides with the Paris-Nice. Paris Nice is the big one for us this month. Then the Milano Sanremo where we could hope to snag a good result by doing something on the final climb. To round of March is the Vuelta Castilla y Leon, with both a timetrial and a mountainfinish it's our terrain.

Injury
Zubeldia manages to injure himself in the Vuelta Murcia despite being told not to excert himself. It'll put him out of action for a good months time.

Paris-Nice

It's Paris-Nice time! Mikel Astarloza will be aiming for the top3 here. With 9km prologue, 3 mountainstages and a lot of hills, he should have good chances. Stage 1
img514.imageshack.us/img514/2323/thpcm0048lk1.jpg

The prologue kicks of and Gutierrez, now spanish champion, sets the standard when he runs it at 7'09.. that is going to be hard to beat!
img242.imageshack.us/img242/2427/thpcm0052ga4.jpg

Hoste is on the track. He rides just 2 seconds slower than Gutierrez.
img410.imageshack.us/img410/4859/thpcm0053yy1.jpg

Another one of the favorties, Thomas Dekker clocks in at 7.12. Astarloza is next for us and we'll get an idea about his condition compared to Gutierrez and Dekker from his performance.
img95.imageshack.us/img95/7095/thpcm0054iq2.jpg

And here he is. Astarloza clocks the exact same time as Thomas Dekker despite Thomas being slightly superior to him in the discipline.
img514.imageshack.us/img514/8784/thpcm0055uk4.jpg

Bradley Wiggins tried to knock Gutierrez of the top spot but he is just one second slower than the spanish champion. Impressive by the young brit.
