Alex Edmondson ~ Giro Week 2!
Teddy The Creator
@Reveille He's really performing so far! Anything from here is just a bonus, 4th at RvV is more than we ever expected from him.

Compiègne - Roubaix 258.8kms

Here we are, the Hell of the North. 258kms of brutal cobblestones, with over 24 seperate sections awaiting us. It's gonna be a harsh day, but after Matt Hayman's miracle victory last season, we come with an air of confidence knowing that anyone can win today.

We'll be challenged by the same foes we fought in Flanders 7 days ago. Sagan, Van Avermaet, Boonen, Terpstra & many more. Jens Keukeleire had an amazing race last week coming in 4th, and the peloton is officially on notice. If Luke Durbridge's luck is a little better, we'll have an even better shot at getting into the top-5 again.

I can't wait to get out onto the pavè for my first Paris-Roubaix. Let's get into it.

Race Report

The 5 riders that took it upon themselves to breakaway early, highlighted by French champion Arthur Vichot (FDJ), entered the first cobbled section after 95kms. They had a lead of 4'00", and with 160kms left, they would surely be caught soon.

i.imgur.com/TPng6pm.jpg
The break entering a 3-star rated section

And crunch! A crash in the peloton, as several riders hit the hard cobbles! The riders approaching them scramble to dodge, and many more fall down. Terpstra, Degenkolb, Sagan, Naesen, Hayman and young Orica rider Alex Edmondson are all on the ground. No serious injuries, and they will ride on, despite some scratches and bruises.

i.imgur.com/J60Lf4e.jpg
Will those fallen pay for their slip up later in the day?

As the peloton hit the infamous d'Arenberg sector, the break was all but caught. Always a decisive point in the race, d'Arenberg again marked the point where the race began to split. The strongest remained at the front while the weak began to fall behind, as always. Niki Terpstra & Alex Edmondson are two of those fallen behind, clearly feeling the pain from their earlier crash.

i.imgur.com/TToKsBy.jpg
The peloton prepares to hit Trouée d'Arenberg

There was now a select group of 22 at the front. All the favourites were present, except Quick-Step were down to just Stybar & Boonen after Terpstra had fallen behind. The Orica big-3 were sitting comfortably at the front, while Daniel Oss, Greg van Avermaet's teammate, drove the pace on the front.

i.imgur.com/lgSvhIZ.jpg
The final 22 riders in contention for the PR crown

And an attack from Tom Boonen! In his final Paris-Roubaix, he took advantage of a slight decrease in pace in the front group, and launched ahead. While no one could grab his wheel, the group worked together to bring him back. A warning shot to those just trying to ease along to the finish line. Hayman & Durbridge begin to struggle, as Keukeleire would soon be isolated.

And news from the back that there's been another big crash, once again involving Alex Edmondson, as well as teammate Roger Kluge, Sylvain Chavanel, Taylor Phinney, and a few more. A horror day for Edmondson's first Paris-Roubaix after a very promising start to his classics career.

i.imgur.com/HkgkhBz.jpg
Not enough to win, but a show of strength from the 4-time champion

Just as Boonen is brought back, John Degenkolb goes for it! Clearly very motivated after a dissapointing season so far, the German tries to attack, and does some serious damage. He is reeled back, but only by 14, many of whom were simply trying to keep in touch, and looked without a chance in the final sprint. Sagan, Vanmarcke, Boonen & Keukeleire look the most comfortable, as the velodrome inched closer.

i.imgur.com/IrYufhR.jpg
John Degenkolb will win or die trying

With the group inching closer to the stadium in Roubaix, an attack comes from the man hiding in the shadows all day, and winner of the Ronde van Vlaanderen just a week ago, Peter Sagan. You can hear the crowd's vocal excitement as the showman rips away from his competitors towards the finale.

i.imgur.com/f0g3AEA.jpg
A quiet race thus far, but the world champ is here when it counts

Despite looking almost unstoppable, Sagan is caught just as they enter the stadium. What damage will that effort do to his chances today? With Degenkolb, Boonen, GVA & Keukeleire all still in the group, he would seriously be up against it come the final sprint. Keukeleire leads the group for the final laps around. It would end in a sprint, but after today's race, anyone can win.

i.imgur.com/rOmBVQi.jpg
Not long left before we have our champion

And it begins! Degenkolb goes first, with Sagan on his wheel. Boonen tries to get up onto the ramp to get a start on his sprint. Vanmarcke is on his wheel. Keukeleire is just behind Sagan, waiting for his moment. A new champion awaits.

i.imgur.com/mvdt0uR.jpg
Sagan in prime position, but did he have the legs?

It's super tight! The riders can almost touch the line! Degenkolb and Sagan took an early lead but Keukeleire is charging through the middle of the pack, as Boonen & Vanmarcke begin to fall. Could the Orica man get the biggest win of his career?

i.imgur.com/b3tKpLo.jpg
Sagan, Keukeleire, Degenkolb

And our winner today.. John Degenkolb! He kicked early and held off the charging Keukeleire and Sagan to take his second Roubaix trophy! A mammoth effort by Keukeleire to cap off a truly breakout classics season, proving himself to be one of the premier cobbles riders in the world.

Again, all I can say is wow. Today was brutal, I won't lie. I hit the ground hard twice, and I can really feel it now the race is over. There's no serious damage, but let's just say I'm happy to have three weeks off now before my next race. I'll definitely enjoy my rest.

But forget about me, how about the performance so far this season from Jens Keukeleire. Third at Omloop HN, 5th at Gent-Wevelgem & E3, and of course 4th last week at the RvV, and now today, he's really proving himself and the world is paying attention. And of course all of our teammates have been instrumental in his success so far, we all have a job to do, and the satisfaction of earning those results for the team really makes all the blood, sweat and tears worth it.

It's been an amazing classics season again, but I'm done now until my Giro prep begins at the Tour de Romandie. Before we start there though, we've got Ardennes week, so I'll let you know how we go there, as well as the two WorldTour races in Catalunya & the Basque country that have just finished.

Until next time,
Alex

Race Recap - March/April 2017

It's been a while since I last checked in, but I'm back, here in the town of Aigle in Switzerland for the start of the Tour de Romandie tomorrow. But before we get into that, let me fill you in on how things have been going around the rest of the world of cycling..

While we were in Belgium racing the cobbles, the rest of the team where in Spain for the two respective tours of Catalunya & Pais Vasco, Some good early season tests of form on some challenging climbs over a week or so each. Over the two races we had some great results and amazing individual performances.

And of course just as the Paris-Roubaix ended, the Ardennes week began. Starting with Amstel Gold Race, then onto Fleche Wallone, and finishing at the famous Liege-Bastogne-Liege, it was another thoroughly entertaining week of racing highlighted by some great results for our leaders. Check it all out below!

We started the race perfectly, with Magnus Cort Nielsen winning a chaotic bunch sprint to Callela, earning him the leader's jersey and the points jersey. He lost it however in the second stage 40km team time-trial, which was won by Movistar, handing the leader's jersey to Nairo Quintana, who never lost it.

We didn't come here with many expectations for the overall, with Roman Kreuziger leading us against a very strong field. He wasn't in great form, and after losing over 2 minutes to the leaders on stage-3, we focused on other classifications, and snagging another stage win. We did just that, with Ruben Plaza outlasting all his breakaway compatriots and just beating the bunch sprint on stage 4. On that stage he earnt the King of the Mountains jersey, which he defended terrifically throughout the final two stages, and finished with a 40 point buffer onto second place.

Two stage wins, and the mountains classification; you can't call that a bad tour.

Led by the Yates brothers, the Tour of the Basque Country was a tremendously succesful race for the team, as we finished with three riders in the top-10, and just like in Catalunya, finished with the King of the Mountains jersey on our shoulders.

Daryl Impey competed in the bunch sprints on stage 1 & 2, earning top-10s on both. On the 3rd stage, a very hilly profile with several tough climbs, Impey survived in the lead group until the finish line, and sprinted to 2nd place behind Dan Martin, giving Impey the leader's jersey, which he defended valiantly the next day, finishing 3rd behind Felline & Valverde.

The 5th stage was the end of Impey's run in the leader's jersey, despite finishing on 8th on the summit finish to Eibar. He lost 42" to Alberto Contador, who took the overall lead, as the Yates brothers finished together in 2nd and 3rd, 12" ahead of Nairo Quintana & Chris Froome. On the final 26km hilly time-trial, which was won by Chris Froome, Adam & Simon dropped down in the GC to 4th & 5th, while Impey solidified a great performance to take 8th overall.

All while this was happening, young gun Robert Power was jumping in every break he could, and confidently won the King of the Mountains classification, mainly due to a terrific performance on stage 3, where his breakaway was caught in the final kms.

Another super succesful tour for the team, with great signs for the bigger races later in the year.

Maastricht - Valkenburg 258.1kms

The first of the big three Ardennes classics (although not actually in the Ardennes), AGR is probably the least tough of the three, but at 258kms, is still a pure slog designed for the puncheur with a fast finish.

The race was quite uneventful, with no successful attacks all day. While there was a strong selection in the final third of the race, a group of 35 riders or so reached the uphill finish together. Despite a late charge from Sky's Geraint Thomas, two of the quickest men left in the group overtook him up the final sprint, with Sonny Colbrelli taking the win, clearly a race he likes after his 3rd place last season, ahead of a charging Fabio Felline, his 5th podium place (yet no win) of the season so far. It was a quiet race for the team, with unsuccesful attacks coming from Roman Kreuziger & Esteban Chaves, although Michael Albasini finished very well to take 8th place.

Binche - Huy 208.6kms

Onto a far tougher course at La Flèche Wallonne, the peloton faces several short and steep climbs, highlighted by the infamous Mur de Huy, whose immense gradients always mean the strongest man wins. Alejandro Valverde has won the last three editions here, and was looking to make it 4 on the trot.

We came here with the same squad as AGR, led by Albasini, Chaves & Gerrans. On the first ascension of the Huy, an elite group of 22 formed at the front, and it was a full on race from then on, with 60kms of attacks leading up to the final climb, as Valverde, Sergio Henao & Dan Martin escaped the rest and headed to the final sprint. And once again, the extraordinary Spaniard won his 5th Flèche Wallonne, winning the sprint comfortably, with Albasini continuing his form to take 4th place. Chaves & Gerrans were in the same group as Albo, taking 6th & 8th to make it 3 in the top-10, an amazing team performance.

Liège - Ans 256.8kms

By far the most prestigious of the three races, we end the week with the legendary LBL. One of cycling's 5 monuments, the stakes are even higher here on the very tough hilly course. Valverde was the hot favourite once again, and looked unstoppable at La Flèche Wallone.

The race was going just as expected, as with 18kms remaining a group of 24 riders headed towards the final few climbs. As the rain began to fall, they took a tight turn and a clip of wheels led to a mass crash, with almost all of the favourites hitting the ground hard. Valverde, Martin, Nibali, Dumoulin, Gilbert, Chaves & more were all down and their chances of winning over. 8 riders were left at the front and they sped towards the finish line.

We were very lucky to still have Albasini & Gerrans in the main group, and we felt confident as they headed to the final line. As the sprint started they had a strong lead over the remaining field, and it looked like a famous 1-2 was about to occur, but just as the road flattened, a lightning fast Diego Ulissi overtook them both and took an incredible win. Heartbreak for the team, especially Albasini who has now finished 2nd at LBL for two years running.

Unfortunately Valverde abandoned after the crash, and is currently nursing a wrist injury and rumour is will not compete again until June.

Well, what can I say.. watching LBL was a serious rollercoaster ride, I was sure we had the win there at the end but Ulissi pulled something out of nothing, and we can't argue with that. A podium in LBL was our overall goal for this week, and we achieved it! Not in the way we had hoped, but we'll take the result.

It's been fun watching the racing but now it's my turn again. Romandie starts tomorrow with a prologue, my favourite!

See you there,
Alex

Aigle - Aigle 4.8kms

The latest WorldTour stage race is here, in the form of the Tour de Romandie. Many teams use it as a warm up for the Tour de France, but we're here to fine tune our fitness before the Giro starts in just 10 days. We're led here by Esteban Chaves, but since he's saving his peak for slightly later in the Giro, Roman Kreuziger may take over that role depending on results come stage 2. We've also brought Caleb Ewan for the sprints, and local hero Michael Albasini, so we're expecting some great results here.

I'll be an integral part of the lead out for Caleb, as well as pure domestique come the hillier stages. I get a chance to ride for myself today however, as we have a short prologue to start us off, which I love to ride.

There's a strong start list here, headlined by Nairo Quintana (Movistar) & Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo), who will continue to lock horns after some entertaining battles already this year, as well as French stars Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) & Romain Bardet (AG2R), who are remaining tight lipped as to whether they'll be riding the Giro or Tour. Team Sky is led by Mikel Landa, who leads the pack of outsiders, amongst them former champ and race favourite Simon Spilak (Katusha-Alpecin), Jakob Fuglsang (Astana), Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo), Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R), Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) & Tejay Van Garderen (BMC).

Sprinting stocks are slightly lower here, so Caleb will go into most flat stages as the resounding favourite. His main competitors will be Phil Bauhaus (SunWeb), Andrea Guardini (UAE), Leigh Howard (Aqua Blue) & Rudiger Selig (Bora-Hansgrohe)

Today's profile looks pan flat, but the course actually starts with a 1km or so climb, which pushes the odds slightly in favour of the climbing TTer, not exactly my cup of tea. But I'm feeling good, and the course ends with a long flat section so let's see how I go.

Also one last quick note, I'll be doing the race reports myself from now on! Let me know if you prefer them like this, or the usual way. Enjoy!

Race Report

Our first rider off the blocks was Roman Kreuziger, who has publicly stated his claims to want to lead here in Switzerland. And he's started strongly, posting what was the quickest time, and ended up finishing in 13th place, ahead of most of the other GC contenders, including 5" ahead of Esteban Chaves.

Kreuziger stakes his claim for the leadership

It was very grey skys today, and with the roads very wet still from earlier rain. I got a bit spooked by the first downhill section, and it must've affected me because I underperformed here today, finishing the 4kms in 6'27", which put me in 85th place. Very dissapointing but I'm just happy to finish unscathed.

i.imgur.com/adjVHP6.jpg
The only thing I could enjoy today was the scenery

Local favourite Michael Albasini came out to the cheers of the large crowd here today, and he was flying! He posted the fastest time at the final check, but would eventually be overtaken to finish in 3rd place on the stage. A very good position to possibly steal the leader's jersey soon!

i.imgur.com/Xh5PHMF.jpg
The local hero clearly in great form for his home race

Today's winner and first wearer of the leader's jersey was Simon Spilak (Katusha - Alpecin). A suprise winner, but it shouldn't be, he's won here in 2010 and finished in 2nd place three times also, so clearly a big fan of this race and he's come to win again.

A smokey for the overall win?

A dissapointing day for me, but I haven't raced in a month or so, and the rainy conditions meant I was taking it pretty easy. As for Michael, a great ride, and Roman & Esteban did well too, so all in all a good day for the team.

Tomorrow we're right into the tough stuff, so I need my rest.. See you tomorrow!

Cheers,
Alex

Tour de Romandie - Stage 1 - UWT

i.imgur.com/t0un09h.jpg

Aigle - Champéry 173.4kms

The first stage proper of the Tour de Romandie throws the riders straight into the tough stuff. With three short climbs, as well as the Montée de Vex in the middle of the stage, the peloton will be tired by the time we arrive at the final climb, which will be the first test for the GC contenders. It's not too long so we hope Albasini will be able to stick around but if not we've got Roman & Esteban waiting in the wings.

I'll be looking after Michael for as long as I can today, keeping him safe up front. I'm feeling good so I think I'll last for most of the day.

Race Report

A 3-man break highlighted the day's early action, with Daniel Teklahaimanot (Dimension Data) beating his competitors Manuele Mori (UAE) & Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora - Hansgrohe) to all the first 4 mountain passes, earning him the KoM jersey for tomorrow.

i.imgur.com/VbVko5K.jpg
The Swiss Alps providing the backdrop

As we reached the first major climb, there was no massive damage. The peloton started to split slightly, and over the top the main group was about 80-riders strong. I was feeling good still in front of Albo, with everyone on the team sitting comfortably near the front.

i.imgur.com/PAluJdq.jpg
A group effort in the chase

Teklahaimanot soon dropped his two breakaway compatriots, and although riding very well, going solo was too tough for him and he was caught just under the 20km-to-go banner, with the final climbs in sight.

i.imgur.com/wJ9tuGi.jpg
A terrific ride from the Eritrean climber

As the peloton hit the final climbs, the pace was high. Katusha were working hard to hold off any attacks to keep the leader's jersey on Simon Spilak's shoulders. I soon dropped off, as did the rest of the team's helpers, and it was just Roman, Esteban & Michael, facing off against the rest of the favourites.

And an attack from Kreuziger! The pack slowed down slightly so he tried to grab a gap just before the descent towards the final climb. He got a decent gap as Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) jumped on his wheel.

i.imgur.com/W4t9Kev.jpg
Strong attack from the Czech champion

Kreuziger & Fuglsang held the lead on the descent, but they couldn't hold off the chase from Katusha, who had their hearts set on keeping the yellow jersey. But as Kreuziger gave up and settled back into the pack, Fuglsang attacked again, this time followed by Esteban Chaves, with the pack chasing hard.

i.imgur.com/6fYVBUl.jpg
Chaves had his eyes on Fuglsang with 2kms remaining

And under the 1km banner, Fuglsang and Chaves still led, but Spilak, Alberto Contador, and Geraint Thomas, who was seemingly Sky's leader, with Mikel Landa struggling behind, on their heels. Albasini was just to their left, just holding off for the final sprint. Would the Dane be able to hold on?

i.imgur.com/aArD2N0.jpg
Alba the fastest man, but were his legs there?

And somehow, Fuglsang takes the win! He was chased very hard by Albasini who finished just short, with Esteban taking 3rd. Another 'so-close' moment for Michael, his third 2nd place of the season already.

i.imgur.com/YBpO1sY.jpg
2nd & 3rd place for Orica, so close yet again!

Despite getting the same time as Fuglsang, Simon Spilak loses his leader's jersey due to bonus seconds. Albasini stays in 2nd, with Spilak down to 3rd. With Chaves 4th & Kreuziger 8th, we're looking very good for the rest of the race.

A successful day! 2nd & 3rd is great, we're in a great place for the rest of the race, plus I felt really good and was able to help out all the way until the final climb. Tomorrow's a bit easier so a chance for Caleb or Michael. Let's get that stage win!

Cheers,
Alex

Tour de Romandie - Stage 2 - UWT

i.imgur.com/Xp8ld3g.jpg

Champéry - Bulle 153.5kms

The third stage is a hilly profile, with three fairly tough climbs before the finish line, so if Caleb can survive in the pack, we think today is his chance in the bunch sprint. If not we have the always reliable Albasini who can keep us in the hunt for that stage win. If we get over the hills intact I'll be leading out Caleb, otherwise it's just a quiet day enjoying the picturesque scenery, getting bottles, and working on the front.

Race Report

There were 6 riders who entered the day's breakaway today, for some precious TV time and of course mountain points. The big winners of the day in that respect were Danilo Wyss (BMC) & Jack Bauer (Quick-Step), who took 16 and 13 points respectively over the 3 climbs. Because they shared points however, neither had enough to overtake leader Daniel Teklehaimanot, who missed the break but got to hold onto the pink mountain's jersey for at least one more day.

Fighting it out for the elusive mountain points

As we reached the final climb, the pack, other than 15 or 20 stragglers at the back, was still altogether, and a mass sprint was on the cards. The break never really looked dangerous as the hilly profile meant only Wyss & Bauer were strong enough to hold on to this point. But with a lead under 2 minutes, their chances were looking very dim.

I was looking after Caleb up the climb, and he was feeling good! As was Michael, sitting comfortably behind. Down the mountain now and onto the finish.

The peloton on the toughest climb of the day

With all the climbing done for the day, and the sprinters ready for the finish, we sent Hong Kong champion King Lok Cheung & Kiwi workhorse Sam Bewley onto the front to gobble up the remaining riders out in front. They would all be caught in a matter of minutes, as the finish line inched closer and closer.

An exhausted breakaway rider being swallowed up the chasing peloton

Under the 10km banner, and I was up near the front, as Cannondale took on the task of leading the peloton for their sprinter Tom Van Asbroeck. Caleb was sitting on my wheel, with Alba just behind him. I was ready to begin my lead out, waiting for the perfect timing.

i.imgur.com/NAhyrjL.jpg
All the big names staying safe up front

Just over 2km left now, and Tom Jelte Slagter (Cannondale - Drapac) shoots out the front first. Far too early to win, but teammate Van Asbreock was ready to kick just behind him. I was getting tired as Caleb & Michael ready their sprints.

i.imgur.com/0zZzhPZ.jpg
Cannondale vs Orica, who would win?

And as Caleb kicked, he left the rest in his wake! Michael was doing very well too, just behind him! Caleb went a bit early but it had seemed to work, could this be a famous 1-2 finish?

i.imgur.com/0UCG4sX.jpg
The finish line in sight for Caleb Ewan

No! Somehow, out of nowhere, Van Asbreock overtakes BOTH Albasini & Ewan to take the win! It seemed Caleb just went a tad early and faded at the end, while Alba couldn't match the young Belgian's speed. Another 2nd and 3rd finish for the boys, and the 3rd this year! Our execution just isn't here when it comes to getting those wins.

He shrugged off two of the best to take an impressive win

Although dissapointing for the team, the bonus seconds mean Michael Albasini is the new overall leader!

Well we seemed to do everything right today; protected Caleb right up to the finish, nailed the lead out, but when it came to the sprint? Just too early. We missed out on what should've been a definite stage win. But hey, the positive is Alba now leads the race overall and the points standing. He might struggle to win the whole race, but that points standing is definitely something he can hold onto.

Tomorrow is another sprinter's stage, let's hope thing's work out a little better than they did today.

Until then,
Alex

Reveille
Great to see Alba in such great form. Shame that the boys pulled a 2011 Leopard-Trek getting 2nd and 3rd in L-B-L Smile

VoetsT
Albasini seems in really good shape Grin

sutty68
Great to see Albasini in yellow Smile, now to defend it Wink

@Reveille It was such a frustrating finish, we got so lucky with those crashes and I thought we definitely had the win but Ulissi's speed was ridiculous. Anyway, we got a ton of points so no complaints.

@VoetsT He definitely is! Feel like he could beat anyone in this form.

@sutty68 Thanks for the good wishes! Let's see how he goes.

Tour de Romandie - Stage 3 - UWT

i.imgur.com/8Erq7bk.jpg

Payerne - Payerne 180.2kms

A similar profile to yesterday, except the climbs come a little later in the stage, which could cause some issues for the hopes of a bunch sprint. But they're not too harsh, and with the yellow jersey and hence control of the peloton, we should be able to keep things together for Caleb to do his thing. We feel we made a mistake yesterday having Caleb & Michael sprint, so we're gonna hide Michael in the peloton while we put all the focus on Caleb, looking for that elusive stage win.

Race Report

To take a bit of pressure off the team to chase, we sent King Lok Cheung out into the breakaway, showing off his Hong Kong champion's jersey on the way. He wasn't working that hard up front, just sticking around to force the other teams to chase. It was a dreadful day weather-wise, with heavy rain and thick fog making it a fairly slow and steady race through the first 100 or so kilometres.

The 5-man break working hard for the cameras

As the weather cleared up, and the break almost caught, the peloton headed up and over the days climbs without any major casualties. Caleb was working hard to stick around but assured the team and the DS he was all good for the sprint, giving Michael the all clear to relax back into the group.

i.imgur.com/oTOWXdJ.jpg
Only 1km left of climbing for the peloton

The break was down to just King Lok & BMC's Michael Schär, who wasn't giving up, but they were eventually caught with around 18km left to race. I lifted the pace up front, with Roger Kluge on my wheel, ready to lead out Caleb who was sitting pretty behind him.

i.imgur.com/eiN09yP.jpg
Schär never gave up, but couldn't hold off the chase

5kms left now, and I was still on the front, pushing a very fast pace, giving it my all. Cannondale were right next to us for Van Asbroeck, with Aqua Blue's Leigh Howard in no-man's land in between us both. A perfect lead out thus far.

The Cannondale & Orica trains battling it out once again

1km left and Kluge was leading out Caleb lightning quick! Cannondale's leadout man lost Van Asbroeck's wheel, and darted out alone. Caleb was ready to kick, surely this was his day?

The town of Payerne enjoying the fast finish

He really had to fight for it but Ewan was flawless today, and grabs that elusive win. It's been a two-horse race here but the young Aussie gets the victory today. It really feels great to nail that leadout!

Yes! This tour is a success now no matter what happens tomorrow. Speaking of tomorrow though, I've been looking at the profile and I'm curious if Michael will be able to survive. He's in such tremendous form at the moment, I think he's definitely got a shot at taking the overall victory. We'll have to wait and see..

Until tomorrow,
Alex

Tour de Romandie - Stage 4 - UWT

i.imgur.com/utLb0M8.jpg

Domdidier - Leysin 160.2kms

Today is the queen stage, with 4 big climbs awaiting the riders, including the summit finish into Leysin. With the weather forecast for rain and snow, it's gonna be a very tough day. The goal is to defend Michael's yellow, and if we can't, get Esteban into it instead. Simple.

The DS just informed us that Caleb Ewan & Roger Kluge have dropped out to rest up for the Giro, and considering there's no more stages for them it makes sense. I'm kinda jealous though, today is gonna be brutal.

Race Report

Today was definitely the best chance this tour for a breakaway to succeed, and considering it would also decide the KoM jersey, there was a big, strong break up in front. The top-2 in the Mountains standings (Teklehaimanot & Mori) were both present, as well as Alexis Gougeard (AG2R), Danilo Wyss (BMC), Toms Skujins (Cannondale) & Imanol Erviti (Movistar). They quickly gained a 7+ minute lead, and the battle was then officially on for not only the Mountain classification, but the stage win.

The brave 8 riders out in front

Atop the Jaunpass, the first and toughest climb of the day, the snow trickled down onto us as we sped back down the other side. Everyone was nervously waiting for the final 2 climbs where the moves would have to be made for the overall win. Everyone was feeling good, so hopes were high.

The peloton head down the Jaunpass

After Manuele Mori claimed the max points on the first two climbs, Teklehaimanot pulled ahead on the penultimate climb, gaining the vital 12 points to give him the lead once again. It was all down to the finish now, where Mori would have to beat the Eritrean to claim the jersey.

Back in the peloton, the first attack came! It was Thibaut Pinot, who caught us off guard, as we were slightly behind in the pack. Contador hopped on his wheel, and Chaves used his signature acceleration to catch up straight away as they sped down toward the final climb. Astana worked hard for Fuglsang to bring back the attackers, and an elite group formed at the front.

Thibaut Pinot with the first major attack

Over the top of the climb a small gap formed, and Albasini, Kreuziger & myself got caught behind in the following group. I was ordered to hop on the front and face my fears, taking every risk I could speeding down the slippery mountain to catch up to the lead group. It was intense, but soon we got back, without any skin off the back of me or my leaders. As the final climb began, the DS told me to just relax and that I'd done a great job. Phew.

The yellow jersey caught behind!

As the final climb started, another attack from a Frenchman, this time Romain Bardet! Astana still chasing hard, trying to keep Fuglsang at the front. They must be confident he'd be able to secure the win tomorrow in the time-trial, not needing to overtake Albasini.

Romain Bardet tries his hand at attacking

Bardet was still just leading into the final few kms, with Chaves just behind him. While Albasini was slightly behind, he was still part of the same group, and with some gas left in the tank for the sprint. It looked like he'd make it!

Michael Albasini climbing his heart out

And slightly up the road, Sander Armee (Lotto-Soudal) had soloed ahead of his fellow breakaway riders to claim the stage! Far too exhausted to celebrate, he took perfect advantage of today's stage, just sitting quietly on the earlier climbs, saving his energy for the final push. Mori finishes 3rd with Teklehaimanot 5th, but he didn't gain enough points to knock off the Eritrean, who claims an impressive win in the KoM classification.

The Belgian veteran takes an impressive solo win

Esteban Chaves leads the following group over the line, just ahead of Bardet & Spilak. And along with the rest of the favourites, is Kreuziger & Albasini. The Swissman holds on, he'll have to defend the yellow jersey in tomorrow's time-trial!

Michael Albasini holds onto yellow!

I roll over the line 7 or so minutes later with King Lok just behind me. We can be proud of our efforts today!

Job well done! Albasini defended which was an awesome effort, Esteban proved to be the strongest climber here, and Sam, King Lok & myself all worked hard to protect the guys up front and get them water & food. It was a tough day, but worth it for the result.

Nothing else we can do now though, it's all down to Michael, Esteban & Roman to perform in tomorrow's ITT. It's a mountain ITT but I'm gonna do my best to perform well too, I need all the practice I can before the Giro.

See you tomorrow!

Alex

Tour de Romandie - Stage 5 - UWT

i.imgur.com/1zd5UIw.jpg

Lausanne - Lausanne 15.6kms

Here we are for the final time-trial, which will decide the outcome of this year's Tour de Romandie. It's no ordinary time-trial, with the first 8 kilometres of the 15.6km course pinching uphill, through the narrow city streets. There will be some high gradients in there, so it's going to favour a strong climber. However the second half of the race is pracitcally all downhill, so strong descending skills will be necessary to post a good time. Basically, not a day for me.

It looks definitely a course suiting Kreuziger & Chaves. Albasini however may struggle, but considering his form this week, anything's possible. It'll be tough to hold off Fuglsang & Spilak, who after a defensive performance yesterday must be confident in their abilities.

Race Report

Just as I feared, today wasn't my day. I was feeling good and pushed through the course at a high speed, but I lost a lot of time on those tough gradients and I wasn't taking too many risks on the downhill section. I finished the course in 24'38", 63rd place for the day.

Not the day for young Edmondson

One of today's favourites was former world champion Vasil Kyrienka, and he didn't dissapoint. He put in a blistering time, knocking off Thomas De Gendt's leading time by 20'. He wouldn't be beaten today.

A blistering ride from the Belarusian

Roman Kreuziger's form is slowly getting better and better for the Giro, and here he proved just how good he's feeling. A terrific time, just 9' behind Kyrienka. He would finish the stage in 4th place, very impressive ride.

Solidifying his top-10 with a great time-trial

Alberto Contador has had a quiet tour so far, prompting suggestions that he's going to skip the Giro and go for the Tour de France. However he performed terrifically here, finishing just 3" off Kyrienka's time for 2nd place. A top-5 overall for Alberto.

i.imgur.com/fOTUMBE.jpg
He's still go it, atleast on the time-trial bike

Esteban Chaves hits the course, and rips up the first half of the course, dancing on his pedals up the parcours to set the fastest time yet. He didn't light it up quite as much on the second half, but still claimed 3rd on the stage, 6" behind Kyrienka. Depending on the times of the riders to come (Spilak, Fuglsang & Alba), he could possibly move into the leader's jersey!

A tremendous ride, bring on the Giro!

After his barnstorming prologue, Simon Spilak would've been liking his chances of snagging the overall victory today here. However he struggled slightly, especially on the second half, finishing 16" behind Chaves. He would not be the winner of the Tour de Romandie.

i.imgur.com/dfjtwt1.jpg
Dissapointment for Katusha & Spilak

Fuglsang hits the road right after Spilak, and was 25" behind on the first check. Not good. However he rode hard in the second half and gained 5" back on Kyrienka, however it wasn't enough! He was 1" behind Chaves overall! Esteban had secured atleast 2nd place, now would Albasini be able to hold on?

i.imgur.com/Xx2WM5Y.jpg
Jakob Fuglsang so close but so far!

And now the race leader was on the road. He was met with huge cheers from the crowd here in Lausanne. But come the first check it was clear he was in trouble. He was already 38" behind. He pushed hard downhill but couldn't do any better, and finished 57" behind Kyrienka, which was 51" behind Chaves. He would fall down to 6th overall.

The silver lining however, is Esteban Chaves is the 2017 Tour de Romandie champion!

i.imgur.com/L1EGLdN.jpg
He doesn't like to time-trial, and he couldn't hold onto the yellow.

Well, a surprise, but Esteban just had it today. He rode his ass off and although Alba was disappointed, a great way to lose the leader's jersey, by handing it off to a teammate. A truly perfect way to prepare for the Giro. Here's hoping Esteban is atop the podium just as he was today in 3 and a half weeks in Milan.

A few days rest before we head off to Alghero for the start of the Giro. Exciting! I'll give you a preview of the race with the startlist, the favourites, and everything else you'll wanna know in the coming days.

Until then,
Alex

Thanks so much for everyone following! I'm really enjoying writing this story and it's been one of my longest lasting ones I've made so it feels good. Just wanna say thanks to everyone following, whether you're commenting or not, I appreciate you reading! Wink

@sutty68 It was an eventful finish but a great one for the team

Hey guys, Alex here.

We're officially in Italy now, doing some prep rides with the team, enjoying the gorgeous mountain top views and beautiful towns. I'll be giving a full preview of the big race soon, but first I'll update you guys on the landscape of the cycling world at the moment with the CQ Rankings, and the UCI WorldTour rankings.

As you can see, there are two men dominating the year so far, Alejandro Valverde & Peter Sagan. With 11 wins, Valverde leads all comers, highlighted by victories at La Flèche Wallonne, two stage wins at Paris-Nice, and the overall victory at the Tour Down Under. Sagan on the other hand earned his points in the northern classics, and a dominant performance at the early season stage races in Spain & Portugal.

Our best performers are Esteban Chaves & Adam Yates, with their points earned predominantly at the recently completed Tour de Romandie & Paris-Nice earlier in the season. As for me, obviously I'm not posting a lot, but to earn a few points is nice.

And look at that! Top of the bunch! Feels great to be part of the #1 team, and also to see an Aussie flag sitting atop the world rankings. With 6 riders (Chaves, Yates x2, Albasini, Keukeleire & Ewan) within the top-20, it's not surprising. We've had great performances all round, with several top-5s and podiums in the northern classics and the Ardennes, as well as consistent showings in all the WT stage-races. The DS is very pleased with our results so far, and with hopeful stage win(s) & a high finish in the Giro, we're trying to increase that lead!

As for the teams struggling, Lotto NL-Jumbo, Dimension Data & FDJ are the big ones that are yet to make their mark this year. Mark Cavendish has yet to really perform for Dimension-Data, however the Tour de France is in his sights and could be a big point-earner for the team. FDJ will also be hoping for their big guns to perform soon, as neither Arnaud Demare or Thibaut Pinot have picked up any victories so far this season. They will need to pick up their game if their team have any hope of staying in the World Tour, with Cofidis currently ahead of them, mainly thanks to the work of sprinters Jonas Van Genecthen & Nacer Bouhanni.

And before I leave you, I thought I'd give you an update on how I'm progressing myself.
i.imgur.com/0GgVEp0.png

While there have been no massive changes in my output and skills, I've noticed some slight improvements. I've been working very hard with the team on my time-trialling (TTR +2, PRL+1), and as a result I'm posting my best ever times against the clock. Not so much in competition, where the courses haven't exactly suited me, but in predominately flat courses over 10-30kms I've been posting some career best times, which is very encouraging for the future in a discipline I hope to one day truly excel in.

As well as time-trialling, I've also noticed a slight improvement in my aerobic capacity and stamina (STA +2). I've been lasting a lot longer at peak output in training, and longer stages, while still very challenging, are becoming easier and easier. Just a side-effect of consistent racing at a high level I suppose.

While I'll continue to work on my time-trialling, as well as my overall fitness levels, my trainers and I have been talking about improving my short-form climbing skills, as well as sprint capabilities, both areas I've been told they think I have real potential! So look out for some improvements there in the coming months.

Anyway, that's how things are looking at the moment on the WorldTour, and for me personally. Very good signs all round, let's hope it continues.

Look out for the Giro preview coming very soon, and then we'll get right into the racing!

Until next time,
Alex
