“Thank you Taylor – I can see the hard work put into your report. As I digest your information I might have some questions, but right now I need you to check out the Navigators Insurance squad. Every rider on the squad is working under an expiring contract; maybe we can steal a gem from them for next season.” The cell phone crackled after the signal had been bounced half way across the world via satellite.
“No problem Alex - Find out where they are right now and keep an eye on them – is it ok if I return my report to you in early March?” Taylor asked
“Not a problem – by the way, I’ve talked to Adam regarding getting you some help – He’s all for it so I will be starting to interview potential scouts starting this week. Do you have anyone in mind?”
“Let me make a few calls Alex, I have a few contacts who I think might work out. I’ll give them you number if that’s ok.” I could hear the panic coming through the phone.
“Don’t worry Taylor, your work is top notch – I just want to get reports back quicker so I can make decisions faster. Since we’re a small team I need to wine and dine people a little longer than if we were let’s say Discovery Channel.”
“Thanks for the vote of confidence – I’ll see you in about a month, keep me posted on the scout search. Bye.”
[IMG-R]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/MarkRenshaw020707.jpg[/IMG-R]“Bye Taylor.” Quickly I hung up the phone. I wonder who Taylor has in mind? That kid has a good eye for talent – it didn’t matter who he was looking at or for what job, he seemed to be able to place certain qualities together with certain jobs. What does he see in me?
Mark Renshaw called me today. He verified with me that his contract was expiring at the end of the year, and that he might be enticed to take a closer look at our team as the season wore on. Of course if he did come to BMC he’d be given certain luxuries which would have to be detailed out during talks. Overall it wasn’t a bad conversation, but not very productive. Is Mark a fit for BMC? There’s no question he’s a good rider, but I’m not too sure if I could convince him to leave the Pro Tour to join us. I’ll keep an eye on him as the season wears on and maybe I’ll even let Taylor follow him later this year.
First race day is a day from tomorrow – I’ve got to pull the support staff together tonight to go over support assignments to make sure everyone understands their tasks – I think I’ll have Tristan join me in the team car for at least stage 1.
I still haven’t decided on my starting roster yet – I have a feeling its going to come down to tomorrow’s training ride.
Stephane Bonsergent won the GP d’Ouverture La Marseillaise. Really Stephane is a sprinter; he must be in good form to win this rolling race. I have no interest in this guy though. He’s just not a good fit for us.
Also I received a call from the Tirreno-Adriatico planning committee this morning – they were asking if I planned to enroll BMC in their race since they hadn’t received our paperwork. The jacka$$ was teasing me! I declined again on the spot, I love that race but we won’t be there this year. (Hopefully next year though.)
“David I wanted to call you, I’m not sending you to Etoile de Bessege. I have my reasons, you got to trust me, and let the season come to you. I thought long and hard about bringing you but the timing wasn’t right.” David was silent on the line. “I expect you to train hard with Frankie while I’m gone. I’ll be checking on your progress.”
“Thanks Coach.” And he was gone.
I have a feeling that this might become a problem, I almost inserted him instead of Jackson Stewart, but I wanted another sprinter on the team, rather than a protection rider which David’s roll would have been. We’ll see – they say hindsight is 20/20.
Jackson ready to go 2/8/07 ----->
Race profile
Stage 1 Goals: Have the whole team finish with the peleton, and not lose any time. Also try to take the Mountain Jersey.
Stage Plan: Basically I’m going to have the guys sit back and just ride with the pack today. It’s only the first race so I know the guys are a little nervous. If a break forms I just might send a guy off with it, but only if the rights guys go. It would be nice to hold the Mountain Jersey on the first day.
Bike Setup: I had Tristan set up the equipment for flat stage riding – hopefully we’ll have an advantage.
“So are you ready to go?” I ask Scott. “I’m thinking you should have the Mountain Jersey at the end of the day – are you ready for that kind of effort?
“Not a problem Boss” as a smile spreads across his face. It’s about an hour before the race and I’ve already have gone over race assignments, and Tristan has checked all the equipment. In fact he was up late last night getting everything ready. I even helped him – it was a good bonding time well spent. We’re all a little anxious right now though.
Team roles today (stage 1)
Well there’s the call for the riders to the course – I pat Moos on the back, “Hey watch over Scott today – let’s get him in that break and put that jersey on him.”
“Here we go!” I yell a little too loud into the com link. Did Hartley just pull out his earbud? At least everyone got off the line good with no incidents. “Guys watch this first rise; I bet we’ll see some sort of attack. Moos, Scott go ahead to the front and take a short pull. That way we can counter any attacks.”
As soon as I finish talking – Babes Only send Blanchy on the offensive. Moos and Nydam counter and try to get his wheel.
At the top of the rise Moos checks in: “I’m feeling really good right now, but Scott can’t hang with me should I keep going?”
“Go ahead and fall back, work with Scott, we’ll have to see how the Peleton reacts. Who’s there with you?”
“We’ve got Piil from T-mobile, Jerome from Bouygues, and Blanchy here with us but they aren’t going to help. We’re definitely the strongest here in the group. I think we’re about a min up on the peleton right now, but we’re not moving away.” Moos’ breathing was a little ragged.
“How’s Scott doing?” I ask.
“About as good as I am.” Comes the reply.
“Keep up the effort until you hear back from me. Keep me posted of any changes since I can’t get the car through and up to you. I’m listening to the race official, so I should know when something happens.”
“Thanks Coach.” More heavy breathing crackles across the line.
“Coach, Pliuschin here. Can you hear me?” Pliuschin’s voice seems nervous.
“Yeah what’s up?” I respond.
“Peleton’s picking up speed; what ever Moos and Scott are doing it’s pissing off the boys from AG2R and Credit.” Sure enough, I look at the speedometer and the speed is up to 45-49 km/h. Granted we have a tailwind, but it’s pretty small.
“Just keep pace, we’ll hold tight just a little longer - tell the guys to relax. It’s still really early.”
Within 5km it was obvious that this escape wasn’t going to work. “Moos, go a head and have you and Scott sit up, no need to waste any more energy, they aren’t going to let you guys get free.”
Sayers on the move 111k to go….
“Sayers – move to the front. And watch for the next attack. As soon as Moos’ group is caught someone will go off the front. I want to you take a wheel and go. Maybe we’ll still have a chance at the jersey.”
“No problem Chief.” Comes Mike’s reply as I see him get out of his saddle to start his move forward.
“Attack! Attack! Mike get up here!” Its Pliuschin’s voice crackling over the com.
“Get going Mike! Make sure you have contact after that first sprint banner!” Now I’m yelling into the com. “You’re going to get some separation now, just stay with that lead group. How are you feeling?”[IMG-R]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/Lottotakingthe1stsprint-1.jpg[/IMG-R]
“I’m ok – damm these guys are fast! I think I can stay with them though.” Mike sounds a little rattled.
“Listen Mike I’ve seen you practice, you can stay with these guys. I’ll be right in your ear…”
“Thanks.”
“Ok team there’s 10 riders in the lead group and the Peleton’s stopped chasing – we’ve got our possible mountain leader. Good work Mike! Right now the gap is at 2’ and climbing. Mike, we only have about 10k to the banner – stop taking a pull at the front and sit right off the end until about 5km. Got it?”
“Sounds good Coach. Where’s the group?”
“The lead is up to 2’40” now. OK Mike you just hit the 5k mark – go ahead and jump into the line. How are you feeling?”
“Not too great - the guys around me are re-fueling, should I? I think I can make it to the top without it, but if there is a sprint I’m not too sure.” Mike sounds like he’s beginning to panic.
De Vocht takes the first sprint – Mike is back there I promise.
“Mike, you’re sitting 5th with 1.3k to go it’s too late to refuel now. We’ll just hope for the best. Just keep in line and cover any breaks if you can. After the points you can sit back and cruise for the rest of the time.”
[IMG-L]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/Sayers13toKOM-1.jpg[/IMG-L]
“Sounds good, see you on the other side.” Comes Mike’s breathing over the com.
Mike running out of steam 1.3k from the top. Will he make it and pull on the jersey?
“Mike its ok. Don’t worry about it. We still have 100k to go and 4 days of racing. You got second, that’s nothing to be ashamed of.” I’m trying to reassure Mike, he’s really disappointed.
“Coach I’m sorry, mental lapse there and I just couldn’t respond fast enough.”
“Mike focus – we have more racing to do. Just sit off the back, you guys have 3’ and rising still on the peleton. Don’t do any more work maybe we can take that jersey from Codifis tomorrow.”
“Sounds good thanks Coach.”
Mike coming up a little short, there’s always tomorrow.
Photo Op – Mike sitting off the back as instructed with 64k to go. Lead group still 3’ up on the peleton.
“Coach?” It’s Mike again.
“Yeah what’s up?” I reply.
“These guys here are asking for me to take a turn, should I? How far back is the peleton? I’m still 50k out right?” Once again Mike sounds anxious. I’m going to have to work on that with him if I’m going to let him go off the front again.
“What is this, 21 questions? Mike, just sit tight, yeah they’ll get mad, but we have other goals than winning. Plus it’s hopeless right now. AG2R is driving hard on the chase and they are closing the gap quickly right now. You only have about 2’ right now. With 55k to go you’ll never make it, just relax and let the race come to you. You’ve done a great job today, just save some energy for tomorrow so we can get you in that jersey.”
“OK guys we’re under 28k to the finish, who’s feeling good? We’re all together now with no one out front. Good job at laying off and not trying to go with the break Mike – I can’t believe those guys worked that hard and didn’t get the sprint points. De Vocht isn’t going to retain his jersey with effort expended like that.”
“Coach?” It was Jackson. “I’m feeling ok can I give the sprint a try?” Well, I have to give it to him, he’s got guts…
“Hartley, how you feeling?” I ask.
“Neither here nor there. I’ll just fall in behind Jackson today. Maybe we can find our way into the top ten.”
“Sounds good, everyone else good luck and I’ll see you after the race. Jackson, Hartley I’ll guide you as long as the race director lets me. How are you doing on drinks?” I ask.
“We both have one more that we can use – we’ll take it around the 14k mark so we can follow someone in” replied Hartley.
“Good hold tight – you guys know the drill, and good luck.”
“Go, Go, GO! “ I shout over the com my voice cracking. That kid Jackson was in a perfect position. How’d he get himself there? “Grab his wheel Mike! Pull in the rest of the team.” Looking back Pliuschin, Hardley and Nydam have fallen back – they got caught on the outside looking in. Oh well there will be another day for them.
[IMG-l]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/Sprint17ktogo-1-1.jpg[/IMG-l] Hartley, Pliuschin and Nydam outside looking in.
1.7k out Stewart on Van Avermaet’s wheel can Sayers get his?
Stewart falters at the line….
“AGGGGGHHHH!!! I can hear the pain in Stewart’s voice over the intercom. On the jumbo screen I see him slowly slipping back as Savers and Moos surge…..
“Not bad guys! Not too bad for our first race. Two top tens. I’ll take that every time. And good job to Stewart – he wanted to be in the sprint. That’s what I want to see.”

“Coach – I’m so sorry. I let you and the team down. I can’t believe I finished outside the top ten!” Jackson was beside himself.
“Jackson this is a team sport don’t you realize that with your surge to the line you took almost the whole team on your wheel? Mike was right there to cover your move and you pulled him and Moos into a top ten placing. That same move starting just a little later would have seen all three of you guys in the top ten. There’s nothing to be upset about. We’ve got to think about tomorrow now.” I found myself giving this speech in the team truck directly after the race. The guys were still on the message tables and recovering from today’s effort. “Now we are in a great position to reach all three of our pre-race goals. What are we going to do about Mike and the Mountain jersey? Auge from Cofidis used a ton of energy today, and I don’t think he’s ready to do that on back-to-back days. We’ve got two mountain banners tomorrow, Mike are you ready to take that jersey?”
“Without a doubt – I feel like I could go right now.” Mike answered grinning ear-to-ear.
“Beyond that, all of you guys are only 20’’ out of the lead, and all of you have the same time as a top ten finisher. We need to make sure it stays that way. Let me think about our strategy overnight and we’ll discuss tomorrow’s race at breakfast. The Hotel is right up the street, make sure you are here ready to go at 4:00am – we have pre-race meeting and breakfast then warm-up before we go. Get to bed early, and as a Team, great job.”
I left them all in the truck and started walking around the pavilion area that was dotted with all the other team’s equipment and support vehicles. There were still quite a few people around so I walked toward the finishing line. Suddenly my phone rang; “Hey honey, how the race go?” It was my wife back in the States.
“Man it must be early in the morning there – how are you doing? The kids?” I ask
“Fine everyone’s fine but you didn’t answer my question, how did you guy’s do?”
“Not too bad – we missed out on our Mountain goal I set, but we did get two guys into the top ten.” I could feel myself grinning. God I missed her – I wonder what she is was wearing…….
“I glad you did so well Honey – I was really worried about you getting your results because of the issues you guys had earlier this month.” She sounded like pure honey while she talked. Go ahead and ask – what was she wearing? Something silky? “Honey, why so quiet? I miss you.”
“Oh it’s nothing” I said chickening out with my thoughts “I miss you too, but its getting late here and I have a ton of stuff to go over before tomorrow, wish me luck!”
“Good Luck Honey, I’ll see you where you get back home.”
“Good Night.” I slowly closed my phone. She’s being so patient with me I thought. I owe her big time.
Thanks for the feedback everyone - I'm a little frustrated with the action pictures for this stage and I promise they get better. (I'm actually on the verge of getting rid of the windsock - but most likely won't do that until I get my new laptop.) As I have mentioned earlier thie week the riders names in the pictures are mostly dropped in the next report, and better resolution pictures pick up in the Tour of California.
As you can see each stage is extensive and I'm currently re-writing some dialogue for the Tour of California. Beyond that I have my outline and some plot 'items' that I'm tweaking. I am currently writing my first draft in the April time frame but I have slowed writing somewhat because of an extensive new home search I'm conducting in real life.
Don't fret though, I have over 100 pages in ms word ready to download here with only some minor changes so I don't anticipate any stoppage in the story at this time. But that could change rather quickly.
If you have any input, or thoughts for some plot ideas please feel free to contact/comment here. It's nice coming on-line seeing that someone is actually reading this, and I'm not just doing this because I'm crazy.
if you want to get rid of the circle round the riders, i've found out (thanks to Halvor) that on an english keyboard its the @ button. its hopefully the same in the us
Thanks! But actually on a standard keyboard (US) the " key right next to the (Enter) key does the trick.
it's the quotation mark key for clarification.
you know it's the "little section between the chicklettes and the eraser that doesn't include the bubblegum. Actually it's the whole square inch that includes the thimble but not the ball......"
Steve Martin in The Jerk
Well today is another day and hopefully we will have just as good as results as we did yesterday. At the early morning breakfast, the guys seemed really upbeat and excited.
Stage 2 Profile
Stage 2 Plan: “Toady I want you guys to get Mike into position for those points. Think mountain, mountain, and mountain.” I said slapping my hands together in rhythm with my speech cadence to get my point across. The guys were all on their stationary trainers out of earshot of the other teams.
“What if Mike is being closely watched, and Cofidis take to the head of the field?” asks Zdenek.
“I’ll worry about the contingencies you guys just execute my commands. Understand?” Maybe I was being a little too harsh, but my blood was pumping and I really felt like I could ride myself today and do very well.
“Yes Coach.” They all replied in unison. Maybe I was being too hard – they are acting almost like robots……
“Once the break is caught, I need you guys to move to the front of the peleton but don’t take the lead – that will be Credit’s job plus the other sprinters. We’ll do the same as yesterday – shoot for a top ten finish.”
Team roles stage 2 – everyone is feeling good.
Stage 2 Goals:
1. Finish top ten
2. Gain the Mountain Jersey
3. Conserve energy
Bike Set-up: “Tristan how did the guys like the set-up from yesterday?” I asked
“Great – I was thinking that they should ride with the same one today.”
“You’re reading my mind, man. Make sure we don’t have any failures today.”
“Coach, do you have a minute?” It was Pliuschin walking up to me as I left our warm-up area. “I think you’re being a little too anxious today….” He left his sentence open waiting for a response.
“Yeah – maybe I’ve overdone it today – I forget that we have young guys on the team. But Adam has put a ton of pressure on us to have a good showing in this race, and after yesterday’s good start I want to show him that my trust in you guys is valid.” I kept walking trying to be business-like in nature, but really I wanted to turn to him and give him a bear hug.
“I understand Coach we won’t disappoint you. I think you’re doing a good job. Give me another couple weeks and I’ll get my conditioning back then you’ll see what we can do together.”
Looking over my shoulder back to the training truck, “I hope you’re right Aleksandr – These kids look up to you even though you their age, kind of like me when I was your age. Back up your statements with your racing and they’ll follow you like puppies. I expect big things from you.” Just then the race bell sounded calling the riders to the start. “Good Luck out there today, I wish I could be out there with you today.”
“Thanks Coach – we’ll see you at the finish.”
“So Tristan what’s the word on the street? Is anyone giving us a chance today?” I asked as we climbed in to the team car.
“No, we’re not even a blip on anyone screen – maybe that Mike thing you have planned will work. We’ll find out shortly.” The gun sounded to start the race.
“Kind of quiet so far don’t you think Boss?” asked Tristan in the car. “We’ve already gone 10k without anyone even trying to move. Is this going to hurt you plan?”
“Don’t worry – it’s like a carrot dangling out there, we’re just all waiting for the other one to blink.” I responded. Within seconds, it was a Francaise rider Guesdon making a break through the peleton. Instantly I was on the radio; “Mike here comes Guesdon – hold tight for a minute I want to see if anyone else makes a break.” Just then a whole slew of riders surge to the front. “Go, Mike!” I shout into the com. “Grab Blanchy’s wheel!”
[IMG-r]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/PhotoopSayersonthebreak81k-1.jpg[/IMG-r]“Got it Coach” – as Mike moves smoothly up to Blanchy.
“Now its Cofidis’ move, let’s see what they do.” I said turning to Tristan.
“Alex – I don’t think the break is going to get away – Cofidis has picked up the pace.” Tristan seems worried, but then Mike comes across the com.
“Coach – I’m feeling good and we’ve got 12 riders in the break. I think we can get clear.”
“Keep working with them, the gap is slowly opening and Cofidis is really working hard. They won’t be able to attack if we pick them apart. They have already sent two guys to the front of the peleton right now, but the pace isn’t picking up just yet.” I bark further instruction and encouragement into the com. “Mike you’re about 7k from the mountain banner now with 1’12” on the peleton, stay in the pace line for right now.”
Photo Op - Mike in the early break, can he get any points?
“Ok Coach – let me know when to attack.” Mike’s is hardly breathing.
“Go Mike! you’re 1k out.” I whisper into the com. Instantly Mike jumps off his saddle but Morizot from Auber 93 must be intercepting our transmissions because he does the same at the exact same time. And he was positioned right in from of Mike.

[IMG-l]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/Mikegrabing2nd.jpg[/IMG-l]“Dammit! I hear Mike cussing, the Auber guy cut me off!” Mike is again in a panic at the line approaches.
“Just keep going 2nd will be ok.” I say trying to keep him calm and his heart rate down. “Second should put you in the jersey. And we do have another banner up the road. 2’30” on the pack do you think you can go another 50k with this group?”
“Shouldn’t be a problem Coach – actually this seems to be a good bunch of riders. I’ll position myself for that sprint as we get closer.” Mike has calmed down now and is riding within himself.
Mike coming up short for the second day in a row.
[IMG-r]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/PeletoninChasemode.jpg[/IMG-r]“How are you guys in back?” I ask into the radio.
“Fine” comes Moos’ reply. “Were all staying out of trouble and just going along for the ride. The pace is a little high, but I don’t think we’re gaining on Mike at all, Credit has four riders upfront now.”
“Hold the guys tight for right now. Let’s see how this plays out.” I reply.
Some time went by and Tristan and I watch as the peleton slowly started to reel in the escape group. “Shouldn’t we let the guys know?” asked Tristan.
“Not yet, Mike stills has 2’ and is within 10k of that mountain banner – he gets a little anxious with pressure, I want him to concentrate on that banner so get can bring that jersey to the team.” My voice is a little strained with tension and I’m unable to hide it from Tristan.
“Alex – calm down man you’re going to blow a blood vessel, I don’t want to have to take you to the hospital. Do you want me to move up to the break?”
“Yeah that’s a good idea – let’s give Mike a little visual support.” As Tristan started to move the car up, Mike’s group hit the first rise. “Mike, try to position yourself in third place with 1k to go. I think that should put you in a good position. If you are there go ahead and attack the summit for the point then your job is done for the day.”
Mike’s voice come a little heavy over the com, “Sounds good, guys are already beginning to drop back. “Hey! Are you guys coming up? Damm that car looks good.”
The peleton slowly closing in – Four Credit riders leading the slow charge.
“Pay attention to what you are doing Mike.” I bark into the com.
“Oops, sorry Coach! The 1k marker is coming up and I’m still 10th should I go?” Mike asks as Tristan shakes his head in disbelief.
[IMG-l]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/Sayerstaking3rd-1.jpg[/IMG-l]
“Go Mike! You’re going to miss out!” Again I bark into the com. “Can you believe this guy?” I ask, turning to Tristan. Tristan just shakes his head again.
“Not too bad Mike – go ahead and just take you time coming home – we’re going to get back to the pack and set up for a sprint. You’re only 2’ up on the peleton so don’t put forward any more effort. We’re going to have to sort out the Mountain points once we get back in, or maybe we’ll hear an Official update, but I think you’ve done enough. Good race Mike.” I’m really trying to control my voice over his lack of focus.
“Fall, Fall! – its right in front! Watch out!” I can hear hear Moos yelling into the com. “De Vocht touched wheels!”
“Just stay clear guys we’re just about to catch the break.” I’m trying to calm their nerves.
“Man it’s really disorganized in the pack here, and we only have 5k to go Coach. What should we do?” Stybar is on the line now.
“Tristan and I have to peel off now, but try to get working together. If you see a sprinter, grab his wheel. There will be gaps so watch out for that. Is anyone feeling well right now?” I ask almost pleading into the mike. With only puffing coming over the com. “Ok, Hartley, Stewart see what you can do. Everyone else lets clear a path for them and bring them home. Good Luck guys!”
[IMG-l]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/moosknockingoffTombek.jpg[/IMG-l]“I’ve knocked off Tombek!” It’s Moos on the line. “I’m sitting 3rd! I think I can ride it in! Where’s Hartely and Stewart? “ Moos seems frantic.
“They’re in the same train now – go for the win!” I yell grabbing into Tristan’s sleeve. There’s only 1.9k to the finish. “Who’s leading?”
“Cappelle’s leading out.” Comes Sayers response. “I’ve got D’Hollender’s wheel on the other side!”
“Go Guys!” This time I almost rip Tristan’s sleeve. “Here comes Hartley and Stewart! They’re latching into Moos!” I cry pointing to the big screen. The crowd is at a frantic pitch as the riders round the last bend into the finish. “It’s going to be close!”
“Awww – the guys are fading.” Tristan moans next to me. I take a closer look at the jumbo board and I can see he’s right. My heart drops. The guys aren’t going to win today. Drujon is pulling away from Moos on the far side of the road, still Moos hangs on to 2nd place! What a great ride and move by him coming into the final straight.
Moos Knocking off Tombek sitting 3rd.
Before too long the official results start coming in over the internet – indeed Moos captured 2nd and Sayers somehow managed to hang on for 7th place on the far side of the road. Hartley did get 9th with a very strong move up the middle late. Stewart was left out of a top ten though getting caught at the line with no room to move. Still a 13th was very good for him.
“Coach can you believe it!” Moos is screaming in the radio. “Three in the top ten, and we got the jersey!”
“Good job guys – get a proper cool down and we’re celebrating over dinner tonight. Get some rest we have another big day to prepare for tomorrow.” Once again I’m all business.

“Alex not too shabby today, Moos looks as if he’s ready for Amgen. What do you think?” It’s Adam on the line. We’ve been talking for a while now and he’s planning on showing up later this week, but he wanted to go over some items before I got some shuteye.
“Moos is getting there, but he’s going to get destroyed against the better talent at Amgen. Still though the guys are showing some guts and were meeting the goals I have given them for this race so I really can’t ask for anything else.”
“Alex how can you say that? Moos won’t get destroyed – he’ll do fairly well.” The cell phone crackles proving the distance between us. “I understand the competition will be harder, but the expectations will not be nearly as high as they are for this race.”
“Still don’t get too excited yet Adam – we need to put together a string of good races over good teams. We’ve only raced two days this season, and Moos got lucky today getting that wheel during the sprint otherwise we’d be looking at a 7th place best finish most likely it would have even been farther back than that.” I’m always the pessimist. “Tristan says the guys are feeling pretty good tonight hopefully that will carry into tomorrow’s race. We’re going to protect the Mountain Jersey and see if we can stay within striking distance of the Leader’s Jersey.”
“Sounds good, By the way, the guys from the Tour du Haut Var called the office today – we’re all set all we have to do is file the paperwork, I’ll send it to you email tonight. Get some sleep tonight Alex I’ll see you in a few days.”
“Alex, Sandie from the Cycling Federation Magazine. Your team did fairly well yesterday did you expect to control a jersey this early in the season?”
“Hi Sandie, its good to see you again, I had hoped my guys would come out here and take control of the Mountain Jersey, I just didn’t think it would be Mike wearing it. He’s done a great job for the team so far and he deserves to be wearing that shirt.”
“What about the rest of your team? Moos seems to be riding pretty well so far this season. Are you going to try to attack today to put some pressure on the leaders?”
“Well Sandie, Drujon for Auber has been riding pretty well over the past few days, but there are still over 100 riders in this race only 20” off the lead so its still pretty much any teams race right now. Still I do like Drujon’s chances after yesterday’s sprint. He seemed to pull away from everyone else there at the end.”
“Are you saying that your guys don’t stand a chance of winning? I find that a little unorthodox coming from a coach.”
“Really our goal here is not to win – we what want is to have a good showing, but we are targeting Amgen as an important race for us. If we do win, that will be a bonus. The guys have started out well we’ll see if that runs true over the next few days.”
“So when are we going to see George and the young sensation Phinney? Since they are not here; will they be at the Amgen Tour of California?”
“I haven’t made any decisions regarding who’s going to ride in California yet – the guys here are what I am concentrating on at the moment. All 8 guys have a chance to win this thing and we have plenty of racing to do before it’s over.”
“So have you heard from Scott recently? I understand you two were childhood playmates, are you still in touch with each other? Do you guys discuss race tactics and information on riders?”
“Sandie to be honest with you I haven’t talked with Scott since he took the DFL job. We used to discuss things like that when we both racing for HealthNet a long time ago, but that’s water under the bridge. We’re not as close as we used to be – you can call it going our separate ways, or we’re each doing our own thing but we don’t discuss stuff like that anymore.”
“Who’s going to win today?”
[IMG-l]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/AlexandreMoos010107-1.jpg[/IMG-l]“I really like Moos’ chances today – the course is hilly and Alexandre loves that. The run down to the finish is going to be interesting. I think we’ll see enough daylight between groups today to get some time differences in the main group. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
“Alex, thanks for you time. I’m sure your fans appreciate you taking time out to talk with me. Good Luck today and we’ll talk again sometime soon. Hopefully we’ll see you in California.”
“Thanks Sandie.”
“What was that all about?” asked Tristan as I walked into our staging area.
“Just a magazine asking questions about you guys. It seems that people are starting to get interested in you guys.” I said with a smile. “You better watch out, once you win something you’re going to see more and more of those people around here. Who ready to race today? Its getting to be that time – Tristan, why don’t you get the guys out of the truck and on the trainers – we need to get them loose.”
“Right Captain.” And Tristan followed it with a salute. The rest of the guys just chuckled.
Stage 3 Plan : Once again we’ll see how Sayers is feeling – if he’s got any energy at all, we’ll try to place him in the early break. We’re going to have to be on the defensive today as some of the other mountain point guys will try to catch us with our guards down. If necessary we may place Zdenek into the early break if Sayers can not do it. Then again maybe both will go to gobble up more points. I do plan to have the guys attack today on the final climb (La Grand-Combe), a small gap at the summit should be enough for a win. I really won’t know if my guys have enough in the tank to do this until we get out on the course.
Stage 3 Goals :
1. Top ten finish
2. Maintain Mountain Jersey
3. Attack and create a gap on the peleton in the final climb.
Bike Set-up : Tristan and I discussed it last night, we’re going to go with a mix set-up today leaning more towards a mountain set-up. Tristan felt that this would be more advantageous if I really wanted to attack today.
“So how’s everyone doing?” My voice is over the com. “Nice rolling start there, no problems and it’s a beautiful day today.”
“Coach I’m kind of feeling weak, I think I ate something bad this morning.” It’s Zdenek.
“Come on Stybar – we just talked about the plan after breakfast; why didn’t you say anything?” My frustration level is rising, and I can feel Tristan’s hand on my arm.
“It just came on when we started.”
“Ok we’re still going to go with the original plan – Zdenek, Mike move to the front and get ready to follow who ever attacks. With this first incline, gaps will form, it doesn’t matter who going to go.”
[IMG-l]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/Sayersinhisjersey-1.jpg[/IMG-l]“Got it Coach.” This time it’s Mike.
“Damm man you look good in that blue shirt, what do you guys think? There goes Kuyckx, Mike, go ahead and follow.” I bark into the com.
“They’re watching Mike too closely – have them sit up Alex. Auber and Credit are chasing.” This time it’s David on the com. Sure enough he’s is right.
“Ok guys this wasn’t the right group. Who wants to get a crack at it next?” I’m pleading into the radio.
“I’ve got it Coach – I’m already moving to the front.” It’s Scott.
[IMG-l]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/Nydamonthebreak-1.jpg[/IMG-l]“Ok guys lets try plan “B”. Let me know when someone attacks.”
“Damm Scott’s fast today!” Now it’s Chad on the radio. “I was about to tell him that some guys were going to try to go off the front, and he was already there. They are already about a minute up on us with any reaction from the top teams.”
“Good move Scott, keep it up. I’ll let you know what’s happening behind you. Make sure you work with the group. Who’s up there with you? Anyone we need to be concerned about?” I say into the mike.
“No, I think I just maybe the strongest one here and no one is on the point list. We should be in good shape if the pack isn’t going to chase.” Scott is barely breathing; this could be good for us.
I’m feeling a little anxious, “Scott on the climb to the first banner – do you think you could ride away from these guys?” I ask.
“I think it’s a possibility, you want me to try?” Scott sounds really good.
“NO – sit tight in line, these guys aren’t really a threat, just try to steal some point at the top.” I reply.
"Nice job taking the points Scott, how are you feeling?” I say over the com.
“Doing well, I’m pretty sure I am the strongest in break, there are five of us and the last gap I saw was 4’ are we still at that?” Scott sounds very good too bad the chase behind him has started.
“Scott don’t put too much effort in, Auber has 6 guys in the front plus the leader jersey is with them. Hold tight a little longer and I’ll let you know what to do.”
“Not a problem Chief.” Comes Scott’s reply.
“Ok 8k to the top now – go ahead and go solo from your group. There’s quite a bit of action behind you looking for mountain points so we really need the maximum at this point. Let me know if you get a gap.”
“Will do.” Comes Scott’s replay once again. He doesn’t sound like he even riding at this point.
Pliuschin’s voice sounds over the intercom, “Coach, I saw Scott go over the top in 1st; it’s getting kind of crazy back in the peleton though. We have single guys attacking and then getting reeled back in. AGR2 is trying to take control but it chaotic. I’ve the guys grouped at the head of the peleton to watch for any dangerous break attempts, but so far nothing worth noting. An official board just came by and the gap to Scott is only 1’30”, so we’ll catch them soon. I think we’re under 50k to go right?”
“Yeah I’m showing 48k right now in the car – and we’re behind you. I’m going to have Scott sit up and wait for you guys, maybe we can put a push together for the final climb. How are the other guys holding up?” I ask nervously into the radio.
"Well Stybar, Stewart and Hartely are struggling a little – I don’t think they’ll be much help going towards the finish. Auber just took over the Peleton again and now the gap now is only 48” by the way.” Pliuschin voice seems a little taxed.
“Keep up the work; I’ll get in touch when we reach the final climb. Alex out.”
“Mike how you doing?” I ask.
“Pretty good, we just caught the break, are you thinking what I’m thinking? We’ve got 8k to the top. I think I could go for it.” Mike seems a little spry at the moment.
“Hold on a little longer – we’ll make a move at the 3k mark unless someone else goes first. Stay near the front for the time being. We’ll have Scott protect you as you go until he blows up. He’s done a great job today.”
“Sounds good Coach, I’ll keep you posted.”
“Coach?” Its Pliuschin, “Hartely, Stewart, and Stybar are on their way back to you guys – I think they’re done for the day. Also Scott looks cooked – he’s letting go of Mike and we’re still just over 3k to the top. Do you want to send Mike yet?”
“Patience, just a little longer.” I reply. “Drujon is going! – Moos follow him!” I shout into the com. Instantly Moos is out of the saddle surging forward. “Don’t you love the way that guy rides?” I ask turning to Tristan. “Hold tight Mike – keep a little for the backside into the finish – I have a feeling Pliuschin is almost gone also. AGR2 destroyed the field – guys are flying backward past the car right now.”
“AHHHGH Coach, I can’t stay with them – they’re too strong.” It’s Moos in obvious pain.
“Just get your heads out of the wind - we’re all cooked, bring it home guys there’ll always be tomorrow.” My heart sinks – if we can’t keep up here how are we going to even compete in California? I give Tristan that look, and all he does is nod back.
“I know Alex, I know.” Is his reply finally.
“Damm look at Drujon pull away over the final 100m!” Mike is back in the truck after the race watching the replay. “I wonder how that feels….”

“Whoa guys – tough day out there today. Things didn’t really go our way and it was surprising because it looked as if we were in a good position to make a push there at the end. I’m still proud of your work, the point I want to make is this: You guys were there and in position doing exactly what I wanted done. I can’t ask for any more than that. Drujon was just too tough today and he’s displaying great shape this early in the season. Remember don’t lose faith; our goal here is to get ready for Amgen, and to win the mountain contest. Everyone give some props to Scott today. He really picked it up and came through when Mike couldn’t get away early. In fact he did so well he’s going to be wearing the jersey tomorrow! We’ve got a group of guys chasing us all with 16 points so we’re going to need more effort from you guys tomorrow and most likely on the final day. Get some rest – and I’ll have the game plan ready tomorrow morning. Oh by the way, if you’re not feeling good please let me know BEFORE the race.” As I eyeball Zdenek.
“Coach really it didn’t come on until we started….” Zdenek started but I stopped him with a wave of my hand.
“Guys, I’m not going to hold anything against you, I was a rider myself. I understand you don’t want to be pulled from a race, or ride support for a teammate rather than go on an attack. But when I lay things out at breakfast please let me know. What do you think I’m going to remember? The plan today or Zdenek on the radio telling me he’s ill?” Then I walked out of the truck.
After driving the stage 4 route with the team and pointing out several turns and areas of interest, I was going through tomorrow’s profile and possible race scenarios with them when my phone rang, it was Frankie back home. “Hey Coach, how’s it going at Bessege?”
“Not too bad, we’ve had some mental breakdowns, and the guys couldn’t pick it up today at the end but we do hold the Mountain Jersey.” I sound apprehensive to my own ears.
“Great, good to hear – the guys will come along, remember it’s early and their conditioning isn’t quite there yet. Talking about conditioning, the guys here are coming along pretty well – nothing life threatening to report but I wanted to check in with you.” Frankie seems to be in a really good mood.
“No, Frankie sounds like you have everything under control – I’ll get with you when we get back to evaluate their progress and to decide who going to Amgen. I got to go, talk to you later.”
“Goodnight Coach.” Was Frankie’s reply as he hung up the phone.
“Rise and shine mates!” I cry while slapping the guy’s shoulders as they sat down for breakfast. “Come on who ready to race?”
“Coach it’s still a little early, we really need some grub then you can ask again.” Came Hartley’s reply.
“But it’s a beautiful day Chad – it couldn’t be a better day to race. Does anyone have any questions about today?” I sat down at the table with my big plate of hotcakes, bacon, toast and orange juice and began to eat.
“So Coach, what the plan?” Scott looked pretty eager.
“Well you guys remember the drive through yesterday right? We’re going to go after the second mountain sprint. Other than that it will be a quiet day in the peleton. We’ll let the early break go then if need be, help pull it back in before the second sprinter banner. That should give us plenty of time to put together some sort of attack for those points. Worse case scenario will be a wash on points for today.
Stage 4 Profile
Stage 4 Plan: Take some of the day off to recover – then launch an attack to gain mountain points from the second banner. Anticipate a sprint finale and see if we can get someone up front for a top ten placing.
Stage 4 Goals:
1. Hold onto the Mountain Jersey
2. Take it easy today – looking forward to tomorrow
3. Place someone in the top ten for the finish.
4. Protect our 7th place overall standing
Bike Set-up: Tristan and I agreed to go with the flat set-up today. We really want to try to take advantage of the flat run into the finish. Hopefully our ‘new’ equipment will give is a little edge.
Rider Roles Stage 4
“Ok guys remember it’s supposed to be a quiet day toady. Don’t get too worked up when the break goes. In fact there go some guys now.” I’m giving my daily start speech into the com. “No one there to worry about – Blanchy is the only one who have any mountain points at all (2pts). Just let them go.”
“Coach – Stewart here Blanchy just took max points for the first sprint point. They’re almost 3’ up on us now according to the officials. Do you still want us to sit down?” Stewart sounded very calm; he’s being a professional right now. I’m surprised that Pliuschin didn’t ask that question…..
“Keep riding with the pack, Auber and Bretagne are pulling on the front so it won’t gap too far, we’ll keep an eye on it from here. You guys just take it easy for now.” I reply as I eyeball the speedometer over Tristan’s shoulder. It’s sitting at 39km/h with a slight tailwind.
“Report coming in over the radio” Tristan stated, “Front group is beginning to break up.”
Photo-Op Nydam – a day in the park with the Peleton
“Good” I reply, “that means the chase is on. Even though it’s a 4’50” gap to the leaders they are slowing down up front.” Hmmm everything seems to be going to plan so far. “Who took the first mountain points?”
“Hold on a sec. The report is coming in right now. Sounds like Lembo from Storez took the sprint. He’s not going to be a problem. If fact they are saying it wasn’t even contested.” Tristan seems delighted. “You picked the right course of action today Alex.”
“There’s still a lot of racing to go, but you’re right it’s looking pretty good so far. Let’s keep an eye out on that gap to the leaders – make sure is still coming down. If it doesn’t get close I’m not even going to bother sending our guys to take a turn at the front. No one in the break is really a threat.”
“Watch out Tristan – the officials just indicated that Renden from Chocolade just fell in the pack, we’ll be coming up on him soon. He’s the only one down, where is he in the standings?”
“I think he’s something like 8’ out. Ouch that looks like it hurts.” Tristan voice is pained. “He’ll be wearing that road rash for a few weeks.” Renden’s shorts are ripped open and his raspberry on his right hip is clearly visible as we drive past him.
“It’s going to be hard to finish all alone with 60k to go.” I say more to myself that to Tristan. My brain turns inward to my memories seeing myself down on the pavement; I can almost feel the pain in my hip as I sit in the car.
“Well, Well, Well – it’s Predictor. I don’t think I’ve even mentioned them over the past 4 days. It looks like they want a sprint finish for Steels.” Amusement is in my voice.
[IMG-l]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/Predictorpokestheirheadout.jpg[/IMG-l] Predictor takes a turn at the front - 1st time this race.
“Coach – where are we at?” It’s Moos.
“You have Predictor running the show, chasing a 7-man break with 1’40” on you guys. It’s closing fast so just sit back for a few more minuets then well have Mike, Scott and Stewart move to the front. There’s still 18k to go before the final mountain banner.”
“Ok Boss – I’ll relay the information to the guys.” Moos seems to be in good spirits.
“Go, GO!” I scream into the com. The break has been caught, and we’re only 1.8k to the top of the climb (If you want to call it that.) But Halgand from Credit has the jump on us and wins the sprint. Still Mike and Scott get 2nd and 3rd respectively. “Keep going, you’re starting to get a gap!”
“It’s not going to work.” It’s the voice of reason, Tristan. “See it’s already caught.
“Stewart, Stybar, Hartley move to the front – let’s go after a top ten placing. Pliuschin! What the Hell are you doing? You’ve dropped out the back! Get back on or you’re going to create a gap!” I’m furious at this point seeing Pliuschin fall off the back.
“Look Stewart has a chance, but he started way back. “ Tristan and I are driving in watching the play from the board.
[IMG-r]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/MikeandScott15ktogo24gap.jpg[/IMG-r] Mike and Scott after the climb – 24” gap on Peleton
“Yeah he’s moving up through the ranks, he just might make a top ten. The rest of the guys are done for the day.” I’m really not too excited about this sprint. With 1000m to go Stewart is still charging, but Drujon is moving up faster in the front.
“What a great job by Stewart down the stretch. What was that, 8th place?” I ask turning to Tristan.
“Yeah I think he pulled it out. Where are the rest of the guys?” Tristan is concerned. “Did Pliuschin get back with the main group?”
“There he is – damm he finished back from the Peleton. We need to hit him harder with his conditioning. That run into the finish wasn’t that hard. Maybe sending Mike and Scott picked up the pace too much for him. I’ll have to remember that so it doesn’t happen again.”
Stewart getting 8th, coming from way back.

“Hey Adam, How are you doing?” I ask as I come up to our staging area. Adam is riding one of the trainers grinning ear-to-ear.
“I couldn’t be any better. Alex you seem to have these boys under control. Caught the end of the race, and Stewart looked pretty good coming down the stretch. Plus you have two boys at the top for the Mountain jersey; I’m a pretty happy camper. At the Board Meeting the other day, I can’t tell you the buzz around the table about you’ve already capturing our first jersey, and then Moos getting 2nd on stage 2. People are getting excited, and I’m glad you’re here generating that excitement.”
“Well we’ve secured the Mountain Jersey today, no one can touch us – I just need to decide tonight who’s going to wear it after tomorrow. I’m a little worried about Moos, Predictor rode a great race today and jumped Steels in front Moos today. He’s sitting 8th now and we’re going to need a strong team showing tomorrow to keep him there.” Was that my voice? I sounded very strained.
“Alex, you get too worked up and that’ll be your downfall. You need to learn how to be a Coach and not a rider. A rider mentality will kill you if you keep it as a Coach. Still it was a good race today.” Adam hopped off the trainer. “Can I join you guys tonight for a short ride?”
i would just like to say i have read many stories on this forum but bob, yours is by far my favioraite. u are a really good writer. keep up the good work!
Thanks again for the comments - they do help keep me focused, and encouraged that someone is reading this. I'm sorry to all for the May 27th entry - my format go all screwed up and I'm not pleased at all with the entry. I thought about going back and trying to fix it, but I think I'd rather continue on with the story.
Keep watching stage 5 will be posted later this morning - but that will be it for the week. I've been really busy, and I really need to concentrate in re-writing the final stages of the Tour of California. An unexpected turn in the game has forced me to revise my plot a little so I'm shifting some details around. It's taking me longer than expected to write something that's beliveable so everything fits.
Erik Zabel won the GP Costa degli Etruschi. Milram had 3 riders in the top 10, obviously they were using this race as a tune-up and they did very well.
Stage 5 Plan: “Ok guys, today we’re going to make sure Moos is in the top ten – Pliuschin’s conditioning isn’t here yet, so even though he’s our team leader, Moos is our guy today. Mike and Scott, I decided that we’re going to rest today and let David get some early TV time. David, you have worked very hard protecting our riders this week, and I want the world to know you name. Go out and have a good race.”
Stage 5 Goals:
1. Keep Moos in the Overall GC top ten
2. Stay out of trouble
3. Let David go on an early break (he’s ridden very well and deserves some TV time.
4. Learn – and prep for Amgen.
Bike Set-up: “Tristan we’re going to use the flat set-up today right?” I’m digging through a utility box in our staging area, as I yell at Tristan.
“Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Unless you want to do something different, I’ve been over the bikes last night and this morning, I had to adjust a few brake cables and shifter cables due to them stretching out, but other than that just some lubing and small gear adjustments.” Tristan seems to be in a good mood.
“Hey I wanted to thank you for you hard work this week. We haven’t had a single problem and it’s really helped keep some of our guys relaxed.” Tristan’s smile grew. “Keep up the hard work. I’m going to have you join me for Amgen. Are you good with that? Or will your wife hunt me down and slit my throat?” I’m laughing now.
“I think she’ll be ok. It’s been tough being away this week, but we’ve got our jobs to do right?” Tristan is still smiling.
Stage 5 Profile
So where do I sit?” Adam was excited to join us in the support car.
“Anywhere in the back, just make sure you don’t touch anything.” Tristan was a little uptight, but it’s understandable because he’s responsible for all the equipment in and on the car.
Team roles – stage 5
[IMG-r]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/DavidVitoria021108.jpg[/IMG-r]““So Coach, do you want me to attack right from the start?” It’s David already on the com.
“That’s the plan David, are you up for it today?” I ask back.
“I’m feeling pretty good, but being only 2’ back from the leaders; do you think they’ll let me go?” His voice crackling over the com. “Thanks for giving me the opportunity to go off the front. I won’t disappoint you.”
“David, this isn’t career changing, all I want you to do is go get some points. You’ve worked hard and deserve it. Let’s see what you can do. OK? The race is starting, so go to the front and attack right away. I’ll let you what if you need to keep going. Alex out.”
“Check out David!” It’s Adam from the backseat. “He’s already showing over a minute on the peleton and no one is chasing!” Adam is already excited.
“Calm down Adam, It’s really early and the peleton hasn’t had a chance to get organized just yet. We’ll see if someone wants to give chase.” I reply. “How are you feeling David? You look really good and you have a 1’14” on the peleton.” I ask into the com. “David? ….. David?”
“Tristan, I think David’s com link is dead – did you check the batteries this morning? Go ahead and pull up to him so I can let him know.”
David makes the 1st move….
I’m hanging out the window now talking with David, “Great job getting the separation, but you have a group of guys coming up, and Auber has put their guys on the front of the peleton to chase this break down. It’s up to you; do you want to keep going?”
“Yeah Coach – I’m going to be spent, but we’re not racing tomorrow. Let me go after some points.”
“Ok, your com is down, so you’re going to have to do without any support from us. I’ll stay up here as long as we can, but the officials are going to move us sooner or later. In fact they’re telling us to get you off the side of the car. Good luck on the climb.”
“Talk to you later Coach.” David’s eyes were a little scared as we pulled away. But that’s understandable since this was his first time on a break for us.
David coming in 3rd on the first mountain banner – 2’58” up on the peleton.
“Damm, I wish we could talk with David. Auber is really putting the hammer down, and I’m afraid that David is going to burn himself out before the next mountain point. Tristan, can you get us along side David again?” I’m beginning to get an empty feeling in my stomach. Nothing is worse than being on a break and not knowing what’s going on.
“The race officials are keeping me away right now, but after that next climb I should be able to approach him.” Tristan replied. “They are moving out all support vehicles we’ve got to go Alex.”
“Keep it up David! The second mountain banner is coming up, see if you can steal some points, then take you time coming home. Good work today.” Then we were gone.
“Well I don’t think he’ll have any thing left in the tank to make it to the top – we’ll just have to watch from back here.” I said turning to Adam. Sure enough, as the road rose, David began to falter, crossing the sprint line in 5th place.
“Too bad for him” Adam’s voice was pained feeling for David’s loss. “Still he’s had a good ride just like you told him and he’s still really young. It will be nice to watch him grow.”
Photo-Op, David faltering at the second mountain banner
“Ok guys we only have 18k to go – does anyone want a crack at a sprint today? There’s no one left out front so it’s going to get really fast over the final 10k. Let’s get this sorted out before we have to peel off.”
“Coach I’ll take a crack at it – maybe I’ll get lucky today.” It was Moos.
“You’re not very strong sprinter Moos; Hartley, Stewart are you guys toast?”
“I think we could pull him close to the line, but I know I couldn’t make it to the line especially with Drujon riding so well over the past week. Let’s see if we can get Moos that GC place he lost to Predictor yesterday.” Hartely sounds like he laboring but I have to admire his resolve.
“Stewart are you in the same boat?”
“Yeah.” His puffing coming in ragged breaths.
“Ok Hartley, Stewart go protect Moos – actually let’s have the whole team get together anybody with anything left let me know. At around 10k we’ll either set up a train or jump on someone’s else’s. Let’s go.” I had serious doubts that this was going to work. The guys looked tired and worn out, but heck it was the last day maybe they’ll surprise me.”
“Crash! Moos and Stybar are down – they touched wheels! Damm it looked really bad Coach!” It’s Sayers on the com. “There are several other riders down also – and we’re just outside the 10k mark!!” Sayers voice cracks.
“Damm there goes our top ten placing, there’s going to be a time gap even if Moos can get up from this.” We’re rolling up to the crash site as we speak. “God I hope they’re ok. It looks really bad.”
“They’re getting up, that’s a good sign.” Tristan was really worried.
“Coach, I’m banged up pretty hard but Stybar and I will be ok. We’re just going to roll to the finish; I’m too hurt to push it too hard. Sorry, I had a lack of concentration for a second and touched wheels with Stybar. It’s my fault.” Moos sounds like he’s about to cry.
Crash! 11k from finish BMC will lose its 8th place GC Finish.
“Attack!” Adam yells from the back seat. “I can’t believe they would take advantage like that! Who’s going?”
“It looks like someone from Unibet, Credit and Bretagne. That’s actually a smart move – maybe they can steal the win here.” I have to admire these teams for responding so quickly in this situation. Maybe one day we could do the same. “Is anyone able to go with them?”
“No Coach we’ll all pretty beat up.” It’s Hartley again.
“Well guys just bring it in; we’ll race again in California.”

[IMG-l]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/EtoiledeBessegesSummary.jpg[/IMG-l]Etoile de Bessege Post Race Evaluation
“Alex, don’t be so hard on yourself this was the first race of the year for us, and we still charted a top ten finish and captured the Mountain Title.” Adam was trying to cheer me up back at the hotel. “No one could have foreseen Moos falling like that just outside 10k from the finish. But the fact you had Scott in 11th place and taking the 10th position tells me you had a good race. I expect better GC results as the year goes on, but I’m sure the Board will agree with me that you did a good job here. Now go spend some time with the guys downstairs. After toady if I know you, you’ll be spending every waking moment prepping for California. I’m going to catch a flight back to the states in an hour otherwise I’d be joining you too.” Adam’s grin was infectious.
“You’re right – I need to let the guys know they did a great job, and we did accomplish all of our goals I set before the race began. But first I have to visit Moos and make sure he’s ok.”
“I’ll see you back in the States Alex; let Moos know I’m thinking of him and his family and to get well soon.” As Adam closed the hotel room door, I had to reflect on what he said. “He’s right, every goal we set for ourselves early this week we met. The thing I should be worried about is Moos and he well being then the mental edge of the rest of our riders.” I thought. Putting on my coat I follow Adam out the front door and out to the hospital. I have a friend to go visit.
Evgeni Petrow of Tinkoff won Le Tour de Langkawi. He’s an interesting rider but unavailable for next season.
“Hey Honey how’s everything going?” My wife sounded wonderful, and I could hear the kids fighting in the background.
“I’m doing good, just missing you. I’ll be flying in on American Airlines at 2:00pm our time you’ll be there to pick me up right?”
“Yes sweetie, me and this rag-tag group of monsters. Did you miss the noise?”
“Tell you the truth, it’s been too quiet in the hotel – Moos seems none the worse for wear, they released him after an overnight visit so all the guys went out parting to celebrate. I’m just glad that Moos is ok. Any long term injury would most likely end his career and after talking to him I don’t think he could handle it ending just now.”
“I’m glad Moos is ok too – his wife called me to thank you for making sure he was ok. She really appreciated the time you spent with him since she couldn’t be there. Something like that is always scary for us family people.” I could almost hear her grinning over the phone.
“Well the flight is boarding so I have to go and make sure these guys don’t start an incident. I love you and I’ll see you in a few hours. Take care.” I hate being away for anytime over a week now. Interesting though since when I was racing myself I never gave that a second thought. Oh well it’s time to sit down and plan out Amgen. Now where did I put Taylor’s report? No matter I have it on my laptop – I’ll just review his reports during the flight. He should be coming back this week also if I’m not mistaken unless he found someone he wanted to take a second look at. I should call him when we land.
Samuel Sanchez of Euskaltel won the Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca. [IMG-r]https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/bobhazen/SamuelSanchez021607.jpg[/IMG-r]He’s an interesting rider and most likely out of our reach even though he is available for next season. I emailed Taylor to give him a call and see if he would be anywhere interested in joining us for next season. I’m guessing he’ll respond with a resounding no.
“Hey Alex how’s it going?” It’s Scott on the phone. “I saw your results at Etoile de Bessege. Not too shabby considering you were supposed to be somewhere else.
“Dude shut up. I don’t even want to talk about it.” I mumble a response.
“Aww don’t be a poor sport dude, just because I took that job from you doesn’t mean we have to be hostile to each other.” I could almost see Scott’s sly grin through the receiver.
“Scott you’re an a-hole sometimes. You know I should be thanking you for taking that job. Otherwise I wouldn’t be where I am now. I was just about to call them when I saw your acceptance interview. Did you even know they had offered me the job?”
“Of course I knew – if fact I was in the other conference room when you walked out of the building. Do you think I’m an idiot? I knew exactly who I was up against for this job……..Oh wait, YOU didn’t know they were interviewing other people let alone me! Oh how cute! Damm you’re naive Alex, what did you do? Did you go home without accepting their offer to talk with Beth? Classic! How sweet, checking with your wife on family decisions. Let me guess, she told you to call BMC. Talk about stupid……”
“Wait a second Scott, you’ve are going too far, keep Beth out of this. If you want to bag on me go ahead, but not my family or how we do things. That’s off limits.”
“Ohhh did I hurt your feelings? Are you going to go cry to your mommy like you did when you were 8? Oh wait didn’t she die last year?”
“Dude, when did you turn into a jacka$$?” I turned off my phone before he had a chance to answer. I can remember when we were inseparable and he would have thrown himself in front of a moving car to save me, somewhere over the past few years he’d become the monster that was on the phone just now. I can’t wait until we get to race against each other.
