Your doing great in California Kurtin, that is domination

I think a large part of it is my guys are in very good form. At this point Rogers is at 90 form and everyone else but Hincappie is above 80. I doubt most pro tour teams would have anyone peaking like I am... but winning this race was a goal this season.

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 7

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/7-7pro.jpg

With some hills scattered throughout and a slightly rolling road at the finish, this might take some of the sprinters out of the contest.

Henao has the mountains jersey pretty much locked up, but we sent Martin in the break to keep the pelaton honest.

Since it's been working so well for us, we made a late attack with a bit under 10km to go. 3 of our 4 jerseys were represented with Hincappie leading the way.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/7-7a.jpg

On this one though it looked like we might not make it... but when Edvald shot out from behind Big George he put on a spurt of speed we weren't expecting. He was able to keep ahead of a charging Cancellera at the line.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/7-7b.jpg

Boonen took 4th behind Hincappie. Tom has been pretty invisible in the race to date... must now be coming into form.

A question for you achievement people...

Does a tour win count towards the win total for achievements as well as individual stage wins? I'd assume so but I figured I'd check.

We are pretty much just racing here to get some of our cobbled rideres ready for the Omloop Het Volk. I threw Thomas Lövkvist and Kanstantsin Siutsou
in the race just to have a couple of decent hill riders present, but as it's their first race they're not in great form.

Our team:

Leader: Thomas Lövkvist
Free: Kanstantsin Siutsou
Free: Marcus Burghardt
Free: Andreas Klier
Teammate: Craig Lewis
Teammate: Servais Knaven

We had no real plans coming in. We're just going to hang around in the pelaton and see who has legs at the end.

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 8

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/7-8pro.jpg

The final stage of the race. We just have to control the break and not crash and we'll win all the jerseys and finish a dominating tour.

We sent Henao on the break again even though the classification was already locked up. He would sit on the back of the break and just sprint ahead to take mountain points.

In the end we easily pulled in the break. Frank Schleck tried a late break with 20 km to go and got a bit of a lead. We were forced to use our entire team to ensure he didn't get a time gap and it took us out of the sprint.

Boonen had a dominant kick and Hushovd was able to pass Schleck too at the line.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/7-8a.jpg

This completes our sponsor goal of winning the Tour of California. Not only did we win the race... and not only did we win the team competition and all the jerseys...we actually took first AND second in every classification. Rogers and Boasson Hagen in the overall, Boasson Hagen and Rogers in the points, Boasson Hagen and Devine in the young riders and Henao and Martin in the mountains.

Now let's see if we can continue this through the classics season.

Tour du Haut Var

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/10-1pro.jpg

Another small one day race where we're working on getting our cobbled guys in form. The Omloop Het Volk is just around the corner.

The team:
Leader: Thomas Lövkvist
Free: Roger Hammond
Free: Marcus Burghardt
Free: Andreas Klier
Teammate: Craig Lewis
Teammate: Servais Knaven
Teammate: Marcel Sieberg
TEammate: Bert Grabsch

The race had the required TV breakaway that was pulled back. Heading up the last hill many of the favorites attacked. Lovkvist was able to get into the group, but he wasn't super strong. It was clear this would be the winning move.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/10-1a.jpg

Moreau was the agressor in the group... he kept trying to make attacks. Zabriskie, Gadret and Rebellin kept pulling him back.

It finally came down to a sprint. Rodriguez hadn't been working too hard in the break and he took the race fairly easily. Lovkvist took a nice 5th.

[/b]February Wrap Up:[/b]

It was a good month for High Road. We achieved our first sponsor goal and had some great races. Michael Rogers was our man, winning the Tour of California and just barely getting second in the Challenge a Vuelta Mallorca. He won a stage in each race as well. Edvald Boasson Hagen also won two stages in the Tour of California and took both the sprinter and young riders classifications.

Team Goals for February:
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/feb-goal.jpg

Magazine:
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/feb-mag.jpg

There were no pro-tour races this month, so there is no change on that front. Now we get to look forward to March. We've got some cobbled races, Paris-Nice, Tirenno-Adriatico and Milano-San Remo to look forward to.

Omloop Het Volk

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/11-1pro.jpg

The first of the cobbled classics, this race usually has a strong start field and this year is no exception. Hoste, Cancellera, Boonen, Gilbert and of course Hincapie are all present.

George wanted to test his cobbling legs out here and we expect a good result. He's in solid form after the Tour of California to open his season.

The team:
Leader: George Hincapie
Free/lieutenant: Roger Hammond
Free/Lieutenant: Marcus Burghardt
Teammate: Andreas Klier
Teammate: Bert Grabsch
Teammate: Servais Knaven
Teammate: Marcel Sieberg
Teammate: Diego Ulissi

Pretty much everyone will be working for Big George, but if he suffers an accident we'll switch to either Hammond or Burghardt.

Early on there was very little action. A break didn't even go until a third of the race was in the books. The pace started to pick up over some of the climbs halfway through.

On the second to last climb though an odd thing occurred... after the climb and going onto the cobbles Hincapie had gotten a slight lead on most of the pack. He glanced back and decided to up the pace over the cobbles and see what happens.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/11-1a.jpg

And what happened is he solo'd away from the pelaton! Soon he was catching the breakaway.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/11-1b.jpg

And after a brief rest at the back of the group he simply pedaled away from them as well.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/11-1c.jpg

The favorites made their move late on the flat, but there was too much ground to cover. Hoste made a valiant attempt to catch George in the final kilometers solo... but the gap was just too wide. George cruised across the finish line taking a drink to earn his first victory of the year. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come in late March and April.

What difficulty level, you are playing so well I have to ask

KurtinSC
I'm playing on hard.

Keep in mind that High Road is a very good team and I've only raced one pro-tour event... that being the TDU which wasn't well attended by better sprinters.

I'm curious to see how things go at the April classics and at the Giro when the competition is in form as well.

Team:
Leader: Roger Hammond

Free Rider: Andreas Klier
Teammate: Bert Grabsch

Teammate: Diego Ulissi

While mostly flat, this race has several cobbled hills. There is a significant stretch of flat, uncobbled ground to finish though so it may come down more to sprinters than cobblers.

In the later cobbled sections an elite group formed at the front, with the likes of Hoste, Nuyens, Devolder, Gilbert, Flecha, Cancellera and our guys Hammond and Burghardt.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/12-1a.jpg

Devolder then attacked from the lead group. Unfortuanately, our guys didn't have the legs to follow. Only Nuyens and Hoste could keep up.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/12-1b.jpg

Devolder ran out of juice at the end though and it came down to a sprint between Nuyens and Hoste. Nuyens was able to edge Hoste out at the line.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/12-1c.jpg

Hammond was able to ride Gilbert's wheel to a decent 5th place finish considering the stiff competition. Burghardt was only able to hang on at the end of the group of favorites.

This race was one we thought we could control. The field wasn't too strong and we thought we could set a stiff pace over the later cobbled sections to break apart the pelaton and set up Burghardt and Hammond in an escape.

Unfortunately... the cobbled sections just weren't long enough. While we narrowed the platon down a bit we never got an escape formed. All we did was tire our guys out. We didn't factor in the bunch sprint to finish the race.

A very disappointing day.

Rather than just try to pull away in this one, we decided to send our cobblers on an attack on the extremely long cobbled stretch in the middle of the race to get a gap, THEN start relaying. The longer stretches of rough road may suit us better in this race.

When we made our move we were able to form a break... with lots of High Road riders in it. Looking good.

Paris-Nice - Stage 1

While still an important race, Paris-Nice is no longer part of the pro tour. It's also not a big goal for our sponsors this year, nor do any of our top riders have a particular inclination to ride here. Seeing how cold it is I can sympathize.

That being said, we're going to send a developmental squad to compete this season. John Devine will lead the team. It will be a good chance for him to experience what it's like to be the leader racing againts top level competition.

Paris-Nice - Stage 3

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/15-3pro.jpg

While mostly flat, the late hills could allow a well timed attack to take the stage.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/15-3a.jpg

Or not. The pelaton pulled in the attackers (including Devine) on the downhill leading up to the finish and Steegmans takes the sprint.

Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 1

Both Hincapie and Eisel want to race here in Italy, so they'll be our overall and sprint leaders respectively. Without any big mountain stages, the course favors Hincapies racing style. We're hoping for a podium out of Big George.

Leader: George Hincapie
Sprinter: Bernhard Eisel
Leadout Man: Mark Cavendish
Free: Marcus Burghardt
Teammate: Kanstantsin Siutsou
Teammate: Michael Barry
Teammate: Sergio Luis Henao
Teammate: Craig Lewis

Stage 1:

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-1pro.jpg

The hills at the end of the race aren't sharp, but the extended climbs might let Hincapie break free for a stage win and a time gap. We're going to send Burghardt out to try to capture some mountain points. He's had some issues on the cobbled hills in some of the classics races and we're adjusting his training regimine to address this possible weakness.

Burghardt did get away and took second in the first two mountain sprints, enough to take the mountains jersey by one point.

Ricardo Ricco made an attack on the final hill and Hincapie was quick to follow and then pass Ricco. Fillippo Pozatto got in on the attack as well and the three started relaying with a solid gap.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-1a.jpg

Hincapie pushed the pace on the downhill and Ricco couldn't keep pace. Pozzato didn't help out, riding in George's wake to set up for the final sprint.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-1b.jpg

And unsuprisingly, Pozatto destroyed Hincapie in the sprint. Still, Hincapie got a gap on the rest of the competition which could help quite a bit as the race progresses. It's unclear if Pozatto will be able to keep pace with the race favorites on the hillier stages.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-1c.jpg

Ricco had gotten far enough ahead that he was able to hang on for 3rd place... BARELY.

Paris-Nice - Stage 4

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/15-4pro.jpg

This stage has some climbs in it. Devine is going to hang out near the front and go with a break if he feels like he has the legs. The main goal is to avoid losing any time from the pelaton though.

In the end several waves of puncheurs went and Devine couldn't follow. He did have enough gas to get free on the final downhill and get a few seconds on the rest of the pelaton though.

Pereiro was able to overpower the rest of the attackers and take the stage.

Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 2

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-2pro.jpg

Stage 2 is faily level, but has one of those rolling finishes that pretty much eliminates Cavendish from competing. George will probably try a late move and we'll set Eisel up for the sprint as well.

There's a very early sprint and Hincapie takes everyone off guard by attacking from the start of the race and taking first... giving him a 3 point time bonus and cutting his defecit in the GC to one second. It's clear he's gunning for the jersey today.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-2a.jpg

Hincapie drops back to the pelaton, but Burghardt follows George's attack to get free on a break to score some mountain points. He starts a break this way and takes maximum points in the two climbs.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-2b.jpg

There's another intermediat sprint just before the finish... and 6 km before that point George goes on the attack again, taking first place and the provisional race lead!

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-2c.jpg

But why stop there? George has a lead... so let's keep going at it and see if we can take the stage!

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-2d.jpg

All the sprinters can do is look up the road as Big George takes the stage win and overall lead in the race.
