The Yellow History Book
| Episode I : Aleksei Saramotins |

[img-r]https://www.cqranking.com/men/images/Riders/2015/CQM2015001546.jpg[/img-r]
First Name:Aleksei
Last Name:Saramotins
Nationality: Latvian
Seasons with the team: 2014
Age when joining: 32
Key Stats:75SP, 71CB

Throughout his career Aleksei Saramotins never was a superstar. Despite being on the professional racing circuit since 2008 he did not race in a single WT race. Instead he gained a reputation as attacking journeyman who delivered valuable helping work for his leaders. During his one season with Evonik he had a lasting impact on the team development.

Pre-Evonik Days

His first notable appearance came when he joined Zenmind - Evolution (formerly Agritubel) in 2008. He was part of multiple break attempts in races such as Tour de Georgia, Tour of Britain and Paris - Tours but his groups were never capable of keeping the peleton at distance. His overall performance must not have been good enough as he did not find a team for the 2009 season.

i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/georgia14.png
Saramotins wins an intermediate sprint against Ben Day, Nico Keinath, Carlos Maya and James Lewis Perry in the 2008 Tour de Georgia

In 2011 he joined newly founded Team Pokerstars focussed on sprints and cobbled classics. He was intended as part of the leadout train for world class sprinter Erik Mohs and as domestique for cobble races. His team had a well balanced squad for those races with Roger Kluge, Kevin Van Impe and Anthony Geslin so domestiques like Aleksei Saramotins or Nick Ingels were given no room for own results.

There was only one instance where he was allowed to go for a result himself. Announced team leader Samuel Dumoulin crashed on the opening stage of the Tour Down Under and finished the race with an injury so Dan Holloway, Marco Guillen and Aleksei Saramotins could go for it. Saramotins finished the first stage won by Mark Cavendish as nineth behind stars like Paolo Bettini, Maxime Vantomme or Juan Van Heerden.

Not being satisfied with his role within the team he signed with a new German team for the 2012 season: Team Trilux - Falke. Announced as a leadout and domestique for cobbled races he outperformed the team's expectations by finishing 8th in Nokere - Koerse beating his former leader Kluge. In the following classics he often missed crucial splits and finished in the top 25s. Not so in Grand Prix Herning: At some point during the mass sprint Saramotins may have hoped for more but finishing 5th behind winner Jerome Giaux, Matti Breschel, Toms Stamsnijder and wonderkid John Degenkolb was still the biggest achievement of his career.

He also joined some breaks. While he was reeled in late after his attempt in the Vuelta a Burgos (he still finished the stage at 10th) he was more successful on the second stage of the Giro del Capo. Originally a 7-man group Aleksei Saramotins, Matti Breschel and Jaume Rovira could survive until the finish line. Rovira denied Saramotins his first victory of the career but Saramotins could still enter the podium as new owner of the yellow jersey. He quickly lost it to Rovira on the next stage but it is a proud day in Aleksei's history.

Before the 2013 season he signed with Ekspla-Cision Cycling Team which was to become his most succesful season as a sprinter. And on his very first day of racing with his new team in San Luis he showed everyone that he should not be underestimated. Due to hard fighting team mate Vitauskas Kaupas the big name guys had to go early and Saramotins could beat the likes of Greipel, Kupfernagel, Avelino or Allen Davis in a mass sprint when he finished 2nd behind Mirko Lorenzetto. He added many more good mass sprint results like a 6th place in San Luis, a second place in the Vilnius GP and a 2nd a two 5th places in the Ronde van Belgie resulting in a fiveth place in GC.

He continued to live his attacking spirit and got very close to his first career victory multiple times. After many waves of attacks by the leaders of various teams in Trofej Porec a group of five sprinted for the victory. Saramotins finished third behind Arnaud Coyot and Jonas Vangenechten. He also got a 5th place in the GP Yekaterinburg when fellow escapee Eduard Vorganov won. However, the closest he came to a victory was on stage 3 of the Baltic Chain Tour. He formed a group with Tanovitchii, Hopman and young cobble-specialist Zepunkte. It was the opportunity of a lifetime for Saramotins to take a win in not only his home-country but his hometown as the group hold a four minute gap to the peleton with only six km to go but then it got too tactical and the group sat up completely allowing the peleton to come back. Saramotins only finished 8th on the day on the saddest day of his career.

His Evonik Days

In 2014 he joined once again a newly found team: Evonik - Signal Iduna. Signed once again as veteran who can deliver Simon Geschke some leadouts he got a (shared) leaders role for cobbled classics. Still on the search for his first career victory nobody could know that his career year was just ahead of him at the advanced age of 32.

Early in the season (during Vuelta ao Algarve) he delivered two perfect leadouts to Simon Geschke which Geschke converted into the first two stage wins in team history. Unfortunatelly, only text reports exist of this race as the TV coverage went broke.

Later in the season, the classic season had just started, the GP Oudenaarde would crown his career. Attacking after half the distance with Rory Sutherland on the Oude Kwaremont Saramotins could quickly close the gap towards the morning break. After dropping most of his companions it was the Paterberg where Saramotins went solo for the last 28 kilometres of flat roads. A group of favourites came close again but they couldnt catch Saramotins who finally could celebrate his first career victory. Timothy Dupont even made it a 1-2 for the perfect Evonik race.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/GP%20Oudenaarde/mg2014_oudenaarde_PCM0044.jpg

He carried the form of his life into the later part of the season. He added a 15th place at Tro Bro Leon, a 8th place in Hainlaite and a 9th place in Barcelona but the second highlight of his season was the Lincoln GP. When Cedric Lebris from arch rival Team TomTom and Silvio "Supertalent on a unicycle" Herklotz attacked 83km before the finish Saramotins jumped behind. Quickly gapping the earlier break members the trio entered the final lap together. After a couple of attacks only Cedric Lebris and Aleksei Saramotins were left to battle it out together. It went down to the cobbled climb on the last hundred meters where Saramotins outsprinted Lebris and took home his second classic victory!

He ended his season with a couple of strong leadouts. e.g. on the opening stage of the Herald Sun Tour where he delivered a perfect leadout for Geschke who took the win home while Saramotins finished third himself.

Post - Evonik Days

The 2014 season was his only season in black and yellow. It was a short stint with the team but he left a remarkable and lasting impact on the team. He was responsible for latvian company ELKO noticing the team in the first place and thus, the team would likely look a lot different today if he never had joined us.

Originally, he planned to race one more season with Evonik and use their wildcard to Paris - Roubaix to retire immediately after his first PT race day but it came different.

Due to financial struggles after the deals for Matej Mohoric and superstar Tom Boonen he was traded to (again) newly found greek outfit Elta - Hellenic Post in 2015.

He was used as domestique only and maybe due to his age he could not repeat his performances from the previous season. One single breakaway appearance in Circulo de Juarez was his rare opportunity to fight for his own result but the sprinter teams were too strong that day.

Many expected his retirement after the season but he still felt not ready for ending his career and was transferred to Bulgarian based Vivacom in a stunning trade. As in the previous season he was limited to domestic work with (until now) just one chance to shine.

On the final stage of the Tour of Langkawi he was part of the break of the day. They worked well together and the group could barely survive the chase of the peleton. With 1.5 km to go it looked like only Ruffoni and Gudsell would battle Saramotins for the win but Saramotins completely collapsed and finished 17th - while Ruffoni, Gudsell and fellow former escapee Bassirou Konte finished on the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/10-4.jpg

We'll have to see what he can still add in the remainder of the season but with the widely expected retirement at the end of the season this might have been the final shot at repeating his 2014 victories.

It is rumoured that Saramotins will join the Evonik coaching staff as soon as he ends his career to raise the next generation of Latvian cycling.

Croatia - Thanks! I'll see what I can do. Saramotins was an obvious choice for the first edition but I'm undecided which one would feature in the next edition.

Evonik Continues Sponsorship
sciecon.bts-ev.de/fileadmin/images/content/sciecon_nrw/logos/Evonik_300dpi_Screen_sRGB.jpg

The initial three year contract with main sponsor Evonik was supposed to end after the season but the team proudly announces today that the team and the German sponsors agreed to continue the partnership for another two seasons.

"The team has surpassed every expectation we had just three years ago and has developed from nothing into one of the best classic teams in today's cycling. It is the only logical decision to continue this way and strive for the best."

With Latvian sponsor Elko's initial three year contract running for another year the team looks set to continue its success story with few changes. It is widely expected that the team remains registered in Latvia.

Greg Van Avermaet wins GP Moscow

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Moscow/mos15.jpg

Moscow. After multiple stage wins and many close classics Evonik could celebrate the first Pro Tour race win in team history. With the focus of the local media on the prestigious Deutschland Tour the team has been overlooked a bit in the annual edition of the sprinter classic GP Moscow.

Our classic super star Greg Van Avermaet was sent as leader and was surrounded with 7 young talents aiming for experience against the bests.

After the top sprinters' teams didn't looked too strong after attacks by Vandousselaere, Vandenbergh and Blythe amongst others, Greg Van Avermaet went all in on his own attack 12 kilometers away from the line.

The peleton lead mainly by Orange and Becherovka tried hard to stop him, but Greg Van Avermaet would eventually win by mere seconds - sealing his first victory since joining us during the winter.

@Croatia: Of course. Cannot stop after everything's going so well Pfft

Surprising but really gutsy daring win by Gold Van Avermaet. Finally a classic albeit with way less pavé AND/OR hills than most hoped or were expecting. Evonik really making a great impact in PT in their debut PT season. Smile

The Final 09

After the succesful double header Evonik - ELKO sit in 6th position of the PT rankings between promoted rivals Aegon and Puma. Two months with nine races are left on our schedule and with the top five still in reach these are the races that have to go well to achieve that.

09 - Vuelta a Colombia

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/pt/pt_vac.png

Mountains have never been our favourite terrain and once again keeps us with low expectations. Our best chance for a result might be on the two flat stages with Mark Dzamastagic but we also will be there with our usual climbing trio hoping to join some breaks and hunt KoM points or get into the top 30 in GC.

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/09_Colombia_zpsfnw61ams.png

08 - Tour of Northern Europe

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/pt/pt_tne.png

Possibly the most important race of our whole season. Going through Latvia, being one of our win goal races and being arguably favourite to win the race puts a lot of pressure on our team to perform. Greg Van Avermaet is the most complete cobbler in this race and he has his usual cobble team around him - replacing Marzuki and Kulppi with Bolivar as better time triallist and Stoltz as superb rouleur - to make an impact from stage one. He could also make an impact in the sprints.

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/08_ToNE_zpsg0bvrf8s.png

07 - Tour of Ukraine

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/hc/hc_tou.png

After LLS' victory last season we are glad to be back in Ukraine. We have no favourite but our whole line-up consists of intriguing riders who could play a role in various different scenarios.

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/07_Ukraine_zpseuhzl3re.png

06 - GP Liechtenstein

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/pt/pt_gls.png

We're just here so we won't get fined. Oh, the XP are also a nice bonus.

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/06_Liechtenstein_zpsllzpncqn.png

05 - Copenhagen-Malmo TTT

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/pt/pt_chm.png

We will be there with our five best time triallists (Yes, really!) and a lot of talents looking for experience how not to ride a TTT.

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/05_TTT_zpsje9ipfgv.png

04 - Giro dell'Emilia

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/hc/hc_gde.png

Evaldas Siskevicius finished this race as 25th last year as lieutenant for Simon Geschke. We believe he can be better if given the leader role. We hope for a top 20 result here which might be possible with Siskevicius and Smirnovs both having a good punch towards the finish.

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/04_Emilia_zpsa30udd9r.png

03 - Lisbon Classic

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/pt/pt_lbc.png

Lisbon classic is a race for sprinters who can climb well and Michael Van Stayen is a prototype rider for this race. After a disappointing 13th place last season he wants to do better and the team is suited to help him achieve that with Dzamastagic and Dakteris as leadouts. Toms Skujins will be there as well with his role to be decided depending on the race.
i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/03_Lisbon_zpst2g2mxuz.png

02 - Tour of Tasmania

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/pt/pt_tot.png

The penultimate chance of the season for Toms Skujins and he will need a good gap on the hill stage to get a result as his main rivals are generally seen as better against the clock.

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/02_Tasmania_zpsyfcvnlbs.png

01 - Giro di Lombardia

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/pt/pt_ilb.png

2015 Paris - Roubaix : 2nd Tom Boonen
2016 Milano - San Remo : 3nd Michael Van Stayen
2016 Ronde Van Vlaanderen : 2nd Greg Van Avermaet
2016 Paris - Roubaix : 2nd Greg Van Avermaet
2016 Liege - Bastogne - Liege : 3rd Toms Skujins

Evonik started in five monuments since being founded two years ago and finished all five of them on the podium. Will the streak be continued?

Not so sure yet that we will promote, the points can be made up by the GC teams very quickly on us poor cobblers. Frown But ofc, I'd love to be PT although I'd have to do a big time restructuring of strava then. Racing Volta a Portugal showed me how far away from success we will be.

Sponsor Update #2

Evonik - ELKO has been one of the most happening teams in the world of cycling for the last couple of years and dominated many headlines throughout the seasons. This sparks the interest of many companies who want to use the team as a perfect opportunity for sponsorship. While German specialty chemicals giant Evonik and latvian IT product wholesalers ELKO remain name sponsor a couple of sponsor changes will take place at the end of the season.

The list of new sponsors is headlined by cyclist manufacturer Ērenpreiss . Ērenpreiss owns a legendary reputation in Latvia for producing the best bikes in Latvia prior to world war II. The company was founded in 1922 and quickly grow to supply around 70 per cent of the country’s bicycles. The company died slowly after founder Gustavs Ērenpreiss was forced to flee the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1942.

The brand was revived in 2012 by Toms Ä’renpreiss, descendant of the original founder. The company rebirth created a huge hype and could grow quickly over the last couple of years and reporters from all over the world caught interes: Check out the article of Forbes for further information.

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8f/Erenpreiss_logo.jpg

The Baltic Times is a newspaper for news from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia and will be the official media partner for Evonik - ELKO. They will cover the team and Baltic cycling in general with articles about the team, the history of cycling and the world of cycling in general.

Other new sponsors include our new nutrition sponsor Dion Sportslab who see assistance to athletes in achieving their goals, care of sportsmen’s health preservation and forming a culture of sports pharmacology as their mission; Lithuanian wood company Staki which is specialized in oak floor and furnitures.

Evonik - ELKO also started a cooperation with the Baltic Sports Science Society (BSSS) in an attempt to implement scientific methods into the running of the team as well as developing the youth coaching staff in smaller Baltic teams to guarantee the development of younger baltic talents. The BSSS is a network of organizations with the aim to promote the study and development of sport sciences in the Baltic States. Leading organizations are the Latvian Academy of Sports Education (Riga, Latvia), the Lithuanian Sports University (Kaunas, Lithuania) and the Institute of Sport Sciences and Physiotherapy (Tartu, Estonia).

Companies that didnt extend their sponsorship include Signal Iduna and Turkish Airlines. We thank them for their support throughout the last three years. Here is the full list of 2017 sponsors:

End of season

The season is officially over and we have reasons to celebrate. At the start of the season we were predicted by most experts to survive in the PT after a long relegation battle. However, the team surprised most fans and was in the fight for a top 5 finish until the very last races before finishing seventh in the end.

Farewell to loan riders

After a succesful season a couple of young talents who looked to gain experience on the highest level with us return to their home teams. We thank every team that cooperated with our team and wish the riders all the best back in their usual teams:

Isaac Bolivar
72 COB, 69 TT
The loan for Bolivar was done with one specific stage in mind: The cobbled team time trial in the Tour of Northern Europe. He was one of the four team members to cross the finish line together with Greg Van Avermaet to finish the stage second behind Pokerstars. He remained anonymous in the rest of his 18 race days.

Gabriel Chavanne
80 PRL, 74 SP
Chavanne was the only reason to look forward to TTs this season. TTs? Prologues! He missed a stage win in Paris - Nice by a mere 1s and also added strong top tens in the opening prologues of the Tour de France and Praha - Karlovy Praha - Praha. Should the opportunity arise to sign him on a permanent deal in one of the next seasons we will surely try it.

Arnaud Grand
75 COB
Grand was signed as part of our support team for Greg Van Avermaet and accompanied him in most flat cobbled races. He did his job as the working domestique at the beginning of these races but rarely was noticed which also wasnt expected from him. His one chance to shine on global TV was when he joined the break on stage two of the Tour de France.

Olli Kulppi
74 CB, 70 ACC, 67 HI
Olli was one of the most important domestiques for Greg Van Avermaet this season. He often was amongst the last men at his side and delivered some notable performances throughout the year. In particular, he raised some eyebrows when he single handedly chased down an attack by Burghardt, Bewley and Vanspeybrouck in Strada Appia Antica. He also was seen in the morning breaks in the Dauphine and the Tour de France. If he continues to perform as in the past two seasons with us then Valio will enjoy his service for years to come. Philip Lindau
73 HI, 71 FL, 68 MO
Philip was a quiet domestique who did the dirty part of carrying the water bottles from the team cars to his team mates. His best result was a 6th place on a Tour of Ukraine stage from a break and his most notable appearance was as part of the Tirreno Adriatico stage 4 break. Also, the experience of riding the Ardennes triple will surely help him growing to the future.

Nur Amirul Marzuki
73 HI, 72 CB, 72 SP, 71 MO
Nur Amirul enjoyed a strong season. Used as a swiss knife in all kind of races he surpassed the expectations in his service. He often was seen at the front of the peleton to reduce the peleton or to chase down attacks on the cobbles - sometimes even attacks from superstars like Burghardt as seen below. Marzuki is also remembered for a series of aggressive riden stages in the Basque country as he joined the break thrice on four consecutive stage.

Pawel Poljanski
75 HI, 75 MO
Pawel was signed as an important helper for Skujins on the hills and as a break rider in the mountains. While he did his share of work for Skujins but disappointed in the mountains as he stayed rather anonymous all season long. His highlights of the season were getting into a TDF break on a hilly stage and a 23rd GC place in Tirreno - Adriatico.

Great round-up knockout! seems like your team cares great about loan riders, and with our possibility on correlating future regional interests we might share some exchanges in later seasons - however, what surely stays is that you used your great number of loan-ins for perfect execution of using them in your team demography. Fantastic work!

I like to have some loan riders in my team. They can lead to nice interaction with other managers and I like to help other teams with it. Also they can fill some roles well while being cheaper on the short term (saving money or salary cap). The disadvantage of loan riders to have to give them enough race days to progress in development is a lesser for me because I have little interest in GTs and can use those to give them XP.

We will surely talk about some loans one way or the other in each of the next few transfer seasons but it will have to make sense for both sides. But yeah, I'd love to help with the development of Estonian cycling and Dzamastagic surely likes a few fellow Slovenians as well Wink

Scorchio
As he departs the Evonik stable, Issac extends good wishes and best regards to his hosts at Evonik, and his team-mates from the season for their 2017 PT campaign. With a reduced racing programme, Issac has now managed to complete his University studies and looks forward to his first season focussed full-time on his bike racing. Another PT loan is likely for this developing cobbles in 2017 as he seeks to finalise his racing 'studies' having now completed his book learning.

Thanks knockout mate, appreciated Cool.

Guess he fits well to both of us Cool

Scorchio - Evonik would like to return best regards to Isaac and his future team. Right now, he isn't a prime target for a loan next season but the team likes returning loanees, ToNE might yet again be an important target and the transfer season is long and unpredictable so who knows Wink
