National championships and transfer rumours

With the season close to ending, it was time for the national championships. We won two jerseys out of the blue in our first season, but nothing after that. With the Belgian national championship being ridden on cobbles, we had a big chance to win something again. As we were one of the few full teams, the pressure to control the race was on us.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/BEL/01.jpg

We manage to keep everything together, and with 8kms to go, Vanbilsen attacks. Too many fast riders in the group so he has no choice but to go solo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/BEL/06.jpg

And he manages to hold on until the finish line. A well deserved national title! He'll be proudly wearing the jersey next year.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/BEL/08.jpg

In other countries, Cerny got a 3rd in Czech Republic, Gaviria just missed the podium in Colombia and Umerbekov got a top 5 in Kazakhstan. Senni also got a nice 7th place the Italian time trial.

As for the transfer season, we heard rumours that we want to ditch certain riders. Our official statement is that at this point, no decision has baan made. I want to stress that not a single rider is set to leave the team at this point. We do realise our sprinter section has become a bit too large and we'll have to find a solution there, but I repeat, no one is set to leave yet.

Sponsor blocks manager proposed name change

The offseason started ugly for Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo Pro Cycling Team, as the team manager tried to change the team name following renewals. However, "Team Greedy Piglets" was not to the liking of both main sponsors and urged MG UCI to block the name change. Eventually the team manager backed down and released a short statement.

"Obviously renewals were not to my liking, blocking any chance of acquiring new talents unless we sell riders. It's not a position we wanted to be in, but we will have to cut down our wages budget to be able to sign new riders. So we will be listening to all offers on our riders."

very surprised that you complain here, you had awesome renewals in comparison to most teams in my opinion - congratulations!

Haven't looked at everything yet, but other years I've been able to cut my budget by a few 100.000, but this year my wages went up. Okay, a lot of my riders got better, but still.

That is how it is with talents, yours start to reach a good level and thus their wages increase. Just look at teams that had to let riders go just to not pay fines (or to lower their fines)

Last day of excel access before my holiday, gonna put this one up already.

Out of character message for the transfers: I'll be gone for a week starting tomorrow. If anything, I'm looking for young talents to trade for one of the riders above. Needless to say, if you want Van Asbroeck, you'll have to give me a really good talent. I am not interested in buying or loaning your riders, as I don't have wage budget yet. So please don't PM me with spamoffers, it will be hard enough to follow already Smile

Due to a strike at our HQ, we have missed the better part of the transfer period. Starting wednesday, we aim to be active again. We are still looking to trade the riders above for young talents, so if you have an offer, please contact me from wednesday on.

And please guys, stop the spam. Second year in a row where I ask nicely to not spam my inbox with useless offers. I have already said I have no wage budget, so I can't buy your riders, even if they're incredibly cheap.

Transfer overview

IN MEMORIAM

We lost two important riders this transfer period. Two riders that have been with us from the start were sold in an effort to pay for training for Zico "the Fiasco" Waeytens. But we sold them to teams that we know well and have the best in mind for our riders.

Jasper Stuyven went to Carlsberg - Danske Bank, he was the first rider this team ever signed, so obviously we'll miss him. We'll remember him from his breakaways and KoM jerseys, as shown here in the Giro d'Italia 2016.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/GiroItalia/PCM0209.jpg

The second rider to leave is Nikita Umerbekov. He showed what he could do in his first year, winning a stage in the prestigious Tour de l'Avenir. He repeated his stage win two years later in the Volta a Portugal. He will ride for Eddie Stobart next year.

In with the new!

To replace these two riders, we decided to go young and local. Stan Dewulf and Daniel Savini are talents from our sponsor countries. Only 21, they can make a lot of progress over the years. But most importantly, they can support Sam Oomen this year in his quest for the Tour de l'Avenir. We have a chance of winning it this year, so we decided to get him some extra support.

Wildcards and all time leaders

We are happy to announce the UCI has given us two wildcards for next season. Our top two choices, Ronde Van Vlaanderen and Milano - San Remo were included. It's our 3rd time we ride the Ronde, and we've always shown ourselves in the race. But it's the first time we get to go to the Primavera! Needless to say, we will send out best sprinters there and hope for a surprise result. The other races we will ride are Badaling International, Classique du Grand-Duché and Tour of the Battenkill.

In other news, as we start our 5th season as a team, we came up with the all time leaders stats. It's not much yet, so we hope to add some 3's during the season Wink

All time leaders:

Classic wins: Stijn Joseph, Kenneth Vanbilsen (1)
Stage wins: Nikita Umerbekov, Matteo Pelucchi, Tom Van Asbroeck (2)
GC wins: Tom Van Asbroeck (1)
Point jerseys: Tom Van Asbroeck (2)
KoM jerseys: Daniele Dall'Oste (2)
Youth Jerseys: Louis Verhelst (1)
National championships: Josef Cerny, Domagoj Breznik, Kenneth Vanbilsen (1)

- Our average age has gone up a bit to 25,7. Our short transfer period might have something to do with that. We'll work on that next year, trying to get it below 25 again.

- Nationalitywise, the team is off even better than before. We now have 10 Belgians and 7 Italians to satisfy our sponsors. The 3 foreigners are top talents we don't mind having around.

- Our focus has changed drmaaticaly to sprinters, which isn't a bad thing with the new race days. Tom Van Asbroeck remains the team leader, but Fernando Gaviria almost caught up with him. Matteo Pelucchi stayed on board as well to pick points where no one expects it.

- On the cobbles not much has changed, it's going to be all for Vanbilsen again, although Stijn Joseph may find some leader opportunities at some points.

- Zico Waeytens trained hard to be more competitive in the hills (80Hill). While losing domestiques Stuyven and Umerbekov was not good, Josef Cerny and Gianni Moscon improved to assist him this year.

- Manuel Senni finaly reached his full potential as a stage racer, while Daniele Dall'Oste became an even better climber. Wout Van Aert decided prologues were the best for him and improved there. We hope all this training makes us competitive in areas that often gave us zeropointers in the past.

First win of the season

After coming close to a win a few times, it was time for Roma Maxima. A new Italia classic with lots of cobbles, it was perfect for our team. Kenneth Vanbilsen was the team leader, and he tried to make the race hard as his attack opened the final.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/roma/MG18_roma_004.jpg

It was all vs. one so he had to slow down. Later on he joined forces with Sep Vanmarcke to open another gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/roma/MG18_roma_009.jpg

Eventually it came down to a sprint where he quickly opened a gap, and won the first edition of Roma Maxima!

We have an Avenir!

For the first time in the history of our team, we actually had a contender for this race, Sam Oomen. There was lot of tough competition though, but with a team of De Plus, Biermans, Savini and Dewulf and the Anderberg/Amezawa combo thanks to our friends at Aker – MOT. We started with a first big suprrise, winning the prologue!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS1%2015.jpg

We did lose the leader jersey to the sprinters in the next stages, but thanks to some good sprinting in the mountain stages, Oomen takes it back with a small lead over Ranaweera. They switched places after the time trial, so it would all come down to the final mountain stage. And yes! After some great preparing work by De Plus and Amezawa, Oomen can turn it around once again, dropping Ranaweera and winning the 2018 Tour de l'Avenir with 7 seconds!

A fantastic win for him and the team! And a very important one as well, because just as it seemed we would be sent back to the Continental Tour, we saw the UCI management at the podium ceremony clapping for Sam's great performance. It was time for some backdoor politics..

And with that we somehow managed to save ourselves in the PCT. Time sure flies when bribing UCI officials with pizza and other delights, for the transfer season is upon us!

We decided to extend contracts with all our riders, yes even Waeytens! Is is likely some of them might leave us in the transfer period though, here's a list of their availability. And as always, no means no!

Transfer period

The good:
We got Szymon Sajnok in the team, who will surely help our time trial abilities in the future. In his first years he will already be given big resposibilities for Team Time Trials as he already is our 3rd best guy in that area. We also added some training to Josef Cerny to make him more competitive in uphill sprints and sprints after a hard race.

The bad:
Our average age went up to almost 27, which isn't what this team stands for. Surprisingly we got no offers for Waeytens and Peeters, who could both have left the team very cheap. We can safely say that this will be the last year on the team for some of our riders, unless they suddenly start winning races.

The ugly:
We were very close to signing Jasper Philipsen, but got outbid with 12 minutes to go. Then we got close to Leonard Kamna, also to lose him when we thought we had him. All in all this was probably the worst transfer period for us.

The roster:

Wildcards

Exciting news today after the wildcards were announced. The biggest news is of course that we will be returning to the Giro d'Italia after a 2 year hiatus. The first guy we called with this news was of course Daniele Dall'Oste. He was very excited with the news and vowed to go for the KoM jersey again. Sam Oomen will try his best for a good GC and we hope Fernando Gaviria can do something in the sprints!

We also got wildcard to cobble monuments Ronde Van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix. We've done Ronde before but this is the first time we get a start in the Hell of The North. Kenneth Vanbilsen was incredibly happy with this news and we look forward what he can do there.

Another important race we need to mention is the Tour of America. We've never riden it before but we really wanted to give it a go this year. Watch out for Manuel Senni and Fernando Gaviria to make us proud!
