2014 will have the 54th edition of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco, also known as the Tour of the Basque Country.
The Vuelta al Pais Vasco is one of the oldest races of the calendar. Its first edition already took place in 1924, making it the second oldest one week stage race in the calendar, after the Volta a Catalunya, and older than the Vuelta a España. Back in 1924, Francis Pélissier, brother of the legendary Charles and Henri, won the first edition.
Of the 53 editions held so far, only 23 were actually won by Spanish riders. 8 times, it was a Basque rider taking the honors (not including Samuel Sanchez). Last year, Alberto Contador managed to take the overall win after taking a decisive gap in the time trial.
As usual, the organisation has selected a very tough route for the riders. With many steep and not even very short hills the race seems perfect for those who can get up a mountain or a few more.
The first stage is quite 'easy'. The riders only have to ascend eight categorized climbs. The core climb of the race is to the village of Gaintza, at an altitude of 470 meters. Its summit lies 7km from the finish.
Stage 2 is the second stage without an uphill finish. The main difficulties of this stage are in the first half of the route. Standout is the Alto da Lizaieta with a length of almost 9 kilometers. Also worth noticing is that this is the only stage hitting the French part of the Basque Country.
Stage 3 should be the least interesting stage of this race. The Alto de Gasteiz and the Alto de Zaldiaran are the most interesting climbs, being late in the stage. However, the rest of the stage is quite easy. Chances of this ending in a sprint are quite high.
The organisation has been kind to make such an easy stage before stage 4. Stage 4 can safely be described as the queen stage. The almost traditional finish at the Alto de Arrate will be the decider of this stage, which will surely shake up the GC. Also worth noting is that this is the only uphill finish of the entire race.
The penultimate stage, stage 5, may not have an uphill finish, it surely isn't an uninteresting stage. 5 categorized climbs, including the Alto de Izua, should make a very interesting stage. It's a bit of a pity that the last summit lies about 15 km from the finish though.
The GC will not be decided until the very last day! The route will end with a relatively short individual time trial. Despite its length of under 23 km it offers a serious uphill challenge. The Alto de Gontzagaigana and the Alto de Santa Eufemia will be seriously difficult climbs, and the winner will have to be able to climb well.
Last year's winner, Alberto Contador is absent, meaning we will have a different winner than last year. However, three other former winners are present. To what extent Samuel Sanchez, Juan José Cobo and Andreas Klöden will stand a chance this year is doubtful. All three seem to be domestiques for their respective leaders.
In Contador's absence last year's runner up could well become the winner this year. Rui Costa can climb very well, and has a strong TT to add to that. Last year's edition he lacked the climbing power and his time trial got him to second. This year, the route is easier and Costa has become better. Don't be surprised to see him take the win.
His main rival may very well be the next Basque winner of the race. Ion Izagirre has made an incredible progress last year, and is unquestioned leader in this race for Euskaltel. He's not only great in the hillier terrain, he can also do time trials, which is exceptional for Basques.
The third favourite we can add is Rigoberto Urán. The Colombian already beat Costa a few times last year, and is hoping to do the same this year. He's however a much weaker time trialist, which may cost him the win.
To prevent this preview from becoming too long, I'll just add the stars.

Good preview, hope we get some racing soon!
I'll also make Ardennes + other races at the same time and even the Giro startlist later this week, so for the teams that have yet to send in startlist (Garmin, Giant, Tinkoff and Vacansoleil), it's now or never. For those that have only send in partial startlist or are still missing the raceday total, they have some work to do as well
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Costa is the man to beat so I have huge expectations once again.
A rather weak startlist makes me say that a GC win is as close as it can get to a "must". A few stages on the way would be cool as well...
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

I'm hoping Leo can do what he did in Catalunya here too.
But with a stage win from Phil thrown in this time as well.

Time for the first stage of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. The climbs should have their effects today, but a sprint of a relatively small group seems quite likely nevertheless.
After a hectic opening phase the race calms down with a break of three riders. Mourey (EUC), winner of a stage last year, is accompanied by Vorganov and Kolobnev (both KAT). They acquire a maximum lead of almost 9 minutes.
With 40km to go Kolobnev is the first escapee to be dropped. The two leaders left hold a lead of about 3 minutes.
The KoM goes to Mourey, after being the strongest at the Orendain. Kolobnev is finally caught here.
1 (Cat.2) | Vorganov | Mourey | Kolobnev | 2 (Cat.2) | Mourey | Vorganov | Kolobnev | 3 (Cat.3) | Kolobnev | Mourey | Vorganov | Int Sprint | Kolobnev | Mourey | Vorganov | 4 (Cat.2) | Mourey | Vorganov | Kolobnev | 5 (Cat.3) | Vorganov | Mourey | Kolobnev | 6 (Cat.3) | Vorganov | Mourey | Kolobnev | Int Sprint | Mourey | Vorganov | Kolobnev | 7 (Cat.2) | Mourey | Vorganov | Kolobnev |
Mourey and Vorganov reach the foot of the Alto de Gaintza with just over a minute lead. Will this be enough for them, with 9km in total left to go?
Movistar and Euskaltel finally set a high pace. Their leaders surely feel strong.
In the middle of the climb it's Feillu (SOJ) who surprisingly attacks, and gets a good gap on the pack!
Although he reaches the break, it's not enough, as just 800m from the summit the three riders in front are caught by the pack.
A pack, with a total of 128 riders in it, reaches the summit united, lead by Landa. A mass sprint seems inevitable. Riquelme and Martinez Machado are both spotted in the front of the pack already.
The downhill offers very few chances of repositioning. A chaotic sprint is launched by Euskaltel duo Landa and Antón. However, the rest of the pack is coming quickly from behind.
Landa still leads going into the final km. The others are coming closer, but the good news for the non-sprinters is that Quintana has successfully been blocking the two sprinters.
And with 500m to go still Landa. Surprisingly it's Cardoso who's coming close now, with Riquelme on his wheel!
It's becoming extremely close with 200m left, it'll be very close at the finish.
It's Cardoso who wins though! A surprise for sure, and it's great to see Caja Rural already showing why it deserves a wildcard. Riquelme and Zoidl complete the podium. Landa has to settle for 5th, just behind Quintana.

Ah Riquelme, Mr. 2nd place does it again. One day he'll win a real race! One day..
Nice win for Caja, they take another step towards promotion.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Nice to see young Austin out of trouble on his first day with the big boys.
Also, racing back with a great report there Selwink! No current eta on Scheldeprijs but maybe race on Sunday evening with report next weekend. Real busy currently so yeah, wait and see that's the last I'll say

Okay little shout out to those who needs to deliver startlists From next week I hope to get started preparing for the Giro, but if I don't get started soon, lots of my planned extra features will not be added.
So please hurry up and deliver those, so we can have the best Giro or GT in EPIC

Great stage. Had really hoped for more seeing how many of my guys were sprinting but this is a good bunch of points as well.
This is the race Ion have been training for since I took over management so it's nice to see him among the favourites as well as seeing the team strong enough to give him good support.

Great job Kolobnev and Vorganov loosing out for the KoM jersey also being together in the break only against Mourey.
Nice job Spilak, though, for getting a Top 10. |
