Pussycat lobby strikes once again against real cycling. At least we wont have to bother with DS crying tommorow, so good that it was taken out (also risk of injuries should be lowered, which is only plus side). The race should be still interesting in such a conditions.
@Alakagom: any pictures, or just somebody claims it?

Well, it's always going to be a balancing act between spectacle, risk and having no GC contenders left at the end of the stage...
Also if the sections are under half a foot of water that could also prove insurmountable...no idea quite how bad they are but expect there will be too many injuries even with their removal.

More standing water there would be too risky, on the edge 2 hours ago, with heavier rain impossible.

It's going to be carnage as they race up to the first sector let alone during the 7 remaining ones in the wet. That said I'm going for small groups at the finish with Kristoff or Degenkolb winning. Interested to see how Demare goes too. |

I wouldn't be too surprised. With that body you're made for cobbling .
And I think the sections are not hard enough for huge splits. |

Degenkolb have said "My turn", so for the sake of the team morale, and the fact that the coming two stages are for Kittel, I highly doubt they will leadout Kittel, even if he is in the bunch at the line.

A Grand Tour should be about all aspects of cycling, cobbles are a part of that.
Enjoy your Grand Tour where 20 guys make it to the finish and a dozen more break collarbones.

Wouldn't want another Demare vs Bouhanni case

They are not too hard, but still cobbled specialist without nursering need have enormous advantage and will ride the sections twice as fast as climbers and other riders not so used to it...

Crashes can happen anywhere. I mean, even in cobble races, where did Cancellara and Boonen crash out in 2012/2013 Ronde Van Vlaanderen? On normal roads.
And I don't see how those posted pictures can be called flooded. I think it's a very cowardly decision by the race organisation.

Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Second to last sector, yesterday. If Mons en Pevele is just as bad due to heavy rain now it's a wise decision to leave it out...

Oh come on. Those riders are paid to be riding even in the hardest weather. Also, are you fuckin kidding me, how can a cobblestone road get flooded. They are made exactly for not doing so ähnlich water goes pass the cobbles and down to the soil underneath(It only gets muddy) . For the money they get(more than the average salary for the EU even for helpers) they should ride in every type of weather unless the road can't be passed with a bike. |

I simply can't understand how can someone blame organisers for doing such a thing, when these sections are basically flooded (see images above) and if there's a little chance that it can be ridden on them, 80% of the guys would crash there, so there's no point in riding them. Roubaix cobblestone sections are already hard as fuck, even without rain. Cyclists are human (well, more or less), too. Would you ride in these conditions with huge risk of breaking collarbones and finishing the race before the real action even started?
Or you do want to watch, as Count said, GT where 20 guys make it to the finish and a dozen more break collarbones happen?

the cobbles will be very slipery and with loose mud on top of the cobbles will be almost unrideable. its bad enough with just water. also, this isn't Paris Roubaix with riders who are used to the conditions.Imagine if Froome or Contador (or another big name) slips, shatters a kneecap, and then the race is boring.
the problem for the stage organizers is to get respectable time gaps but for it not to be dangerous.No-one wants to see a career ending injury for anyone just for the enjoyment of us fans. |
