Stage 14: Revel - Ax 3 Domains 183 KM

Spoiler

Stage Favourites:
***** Contador (DSC) Schleck (CSC) Froome (SKY)
**** Klöden (TMO) Valverde (GCE)

What a day we have in order. In the last 50 KM we have two brutal climbs, which are: Port de Pailhères and the final climb up to Ax 3 Domaines. The GC contenders will come to the fore, at the end of the stage we will have a good idea of who is capable of winning this Tour de France.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/1_zpsbb10504c.jpg
10 men sneak up the road.

The break of the day: Konovalovas, Fothen, Lofkvist, Lefevre, Veikkanen, Vogondy, Charteau, Pinotti, Merckx and Vaughters. A strong enough break, perhaps strong enough to contest the stage win?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/2_zpsf8bee7a8.jpg
Caisse d'Epargne defending the yellow jersey once again.

Joaquím Rodríguez would start his fifth day in yellow, how would he fair today?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/3_zps340f4cd2.jpg
Carlos Sastre on the attack!

Clearly CSC - Saxo Bank have more than just Andy Schleck's wellbeing on their agenda in this tour. With 73 KM to go and the break at 10'00 we see the former TDF winner attack on the flat! A Suicidal move?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/4_zpscf1f408a.jpg
Moncoutié and Basso on the attack!

Two riders, attack with 60 KM to go, still needing to get something out of this TDF. Richard Virenque would attack out of the peloton shortly after, but never looks like getting far. He has not had the form in this TDF.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/5_zps4e73400f.jpg
We hit the Port de Pailhères

The race with 41 KM to go:

11 man break (including Sastre who has bridged across)

Moncoutié and Basso @ 8'01

Virenque @ 9'10

L L Sanchez and N Roche @ 9'50

Peloton @ 10'20

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/6_zps881619cc.jpg

Luis Leon Sanchez (@ 4'11) and Nico Roche (@ 4'50) would attack out of the peloton, the peloton soon accelerates as these two are too far up in GC to be allowed any leeway.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/7_zps7d5aab15.jpg
Schleck, Evans and Nibali attack early!

As Sastre distances the original break, well up the road, the favourites are attacking yet we are still one the Port de Pailhères. Valverde, in his role as super domestique, shuts down these moves but some favourites are really suffering ....

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/8_zps8d8d5dcf.jpg
28 KM to go.

Sastre takes 20 KOM points at the top of the climb, with only Axel Merckx being within 1'00. With the peloton over 8 minutes behind Sastre looks like he is bound to pick up CSC's second stage win.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/9_zps81b1b6c5.jpg
Vinokourov in trouble!

Alexander Vinokourov, despite being the most aggressive GC rider in this Tour, is dropped on the Port de Pailhères. We mean WELL DROPPED! Maybe the Kazakh is suffering after his constant attacks in the first two weeks of this Tour de France.

Race with 28 KM to go:

Sastre

Merckx @ '58

24 man GC group (Evans, Schleck, Valverde, Yellow Jersey) 8'20

25 man GC group (Froome, Contador) @ 8'50

Vinokoruov @ 10'06

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/10_zps70ff4c6b.jpg
Nibali descending.

The Italian, who is after a podium, ensures both GC groups form up on the descent before the tough final climb.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/11_zpsfb078ec3.jpg
Froome attacks!

Almost as soon as we hit the final climb Chris Froome puts in a big attack. This really tests the metal of the other favourites.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/12_zps752a0b57.jpg
Froome brought back.

Upping of the pace by Leipheimer and Nibali, with the rest of the favourites in tow, ensure Froome is brought back. Will there be another attack as the likes of Klöden and Moreau are distanced?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/13_zps6274cb4b.jpg
Froome speeds up the mountain.

Froome would be the next to attack. This time there would be no bringing him back as he catches stragglers from the early break. Sastre has now won the stage, but a good ride from Froome will see him put major time into the other GC men.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/14_zps6707265a.jpg
Contador/ Schleck: The best of the rest.

Alberto Contador didn't destroy everyone on the final mountain today so it looks his quest for the GC win is over. However, behind Froome he climbed the final mountain the quickest with Andy Schleck not too far behind.

Cadel Evans and Chris Horner lead home a 14 man group home, including the yellow jersey '52 behind Froome. Lotto - Domo show they are geared for the team ranking title with the immensely impressive accolade of having 3 riders finish in the top 7 today, with Merckx holding on for 2nd.

Joaquím Rodríguez would hold the GC lead but Froome now looks the man to beat in this Tour after rising to 2nd.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/15_zpscd2636e3.jpg
SASTRE!

The Spanish super climber takes the stage win after a superb solo ride today. He summited first on the two major climbs and therefore moves into the polka dots.

Vinokourov was the big loser today he falls from 2nd to 12th just like that, T-Mobile look set for a difficult week.

Stage 15: Pamiers - Bagneres-de-Luchon

Spoiler

Stage Favourites:
***** Froome (SKY) Valverde (GCE) Evans (LOT)
**** Schleck (CSC) Rodriguez (GCE) Sastre (CSC)

Another day in the mountains. The Port de Balès (19 KM @ 6.2%) is the key climb of this stage, however, with a 20 KM descent to the finish it may be too far from home to see the favourites distancing each other.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/1_zpse144e66e.jpg
Green Jersey, Freire, being protected.

A 12 man break got away today, the riders: Miller, Pozzato, Halgand, Pinot, Flecha, van Garderen, Dessel, Mercado, Knees, Kern, Navarro and Hesjedal were the riders. With Pozzato (@ 1hr +) being the best placed, there were certainly no troubles for the GC men, although many in this break would have eyes on Sastre's King of the Mountains jersey.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/2_zps57d7fc39.jpg
The fight rages on.

Boonen (3 points), Hushovd (2 points) and Zabel (1 point) would be the only sprinters to pick up points today, the fight for green is not over.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/3_zps4bf62bb1.jpg
Not a good few kilometres for Europcar.

With 83 KM we would see Tommy Voeckler fall and with 80 KM to go we would see Pierre Rolland hit the deck. Not the best three kilometres for Europcar in this Tour de France.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/4_zpsc1913c17.jpg
No break win today?

The break seems well in control with 60 KM to go. We have Sky Procycling and CSC - Saxo Bank doing the lion share of the pace setting. Porte, Wiggins, Voigt, Kiryienka, Cuesta and Sastre are all taking turns.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/5_zps287ab4f6.jpg
VIVE LE FRANCE!

We hit the Port de Balès and the favourites soon attack. With 33 KM to go Moreau (@ 2'40) and Voeckler ( @ 2'27) attack out of the peloton, these two are too high up in GC to be allowed any distance.

they are soon caught .....

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/6_zpsef72f75f.jpg
Only to attack again!

This time the yellow jersey goes with them!

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/7_zps78de27ed.jpg
It is all kicking off!

Froome is the next to put in a dig. The rain pours down, but does not saturate the attacking spirit of many of the GC men.

Only Dessel and Kern hang out in front of the peloton with hundreds of metres of the climb to go.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/8_zpsab0e89d7.jpg
Kern takes the KOM points

Christophe Kern takes the 20 points after summiting the Port de Balès first, with Cyril Dessel right on his coattails.

The race with the 20 KM descent to the finish:

Kern and Dessel

Evans, Valverde, Kloden, Schleck, Froome, Contador, Rodriguez, Nibali @ '43

Rest of the GC men @ 1'10

The question is will the GC men take risks on the wet descent? ....

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/9_zps45b88152.jpg
Kern and Dessel pull out time!

The two Frenchman are putting in the descent of their lives as the gap to the GC men grows out to 1'10 with 10 KM to go, behind GC groups merge as no one is willing to take major risks today.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/10_zps5365fb9a.jpg
Dessel vs. Kern for the win!

Kern drives along into the last few hundred meters, knowing Cyril Dessel is all that stands between him and victory. Can Dessel come around the strong Europcar rider?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/11_zps219518fe.jpg
Win NO.2 for AG2R!

Cyril Dessel wins stage 15, making it a second stage win for AG2R in a spectacular TDF for them. Dessel and Kern rode terrifically to hold off the peloton, surviving the dramatic descent.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/12_zps973a6fa9.jpg
Nibali leads home the favourites.

Vincenzo Nibali finishes 3rd today, leading home the 25 man yellow jersey group. Joaquím Rodríguez will start stage 16 in the race lead his 7th day in yellow. The favourites showed sparks today, but there were no fireworks and therefore we have a large group of favourites finishing together.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/13_zps433e6c1f.jpg

The penultimate day in the mountains is jam packed with mountains. Today is the day for those who want to be King of the Mountains here, summit first on all climbs and 60 KOM points are yours. However, we might not see any action from the GC men with a 57 kilometre descent from the peak of the last climb to the finish line.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/1_zpsbf85326b.jpg
Sérgio Paulinho leads the peloton early on.

The Portuguese rider sets the pace, he has had a good TDF already.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/2_zps95925a54.jpg
The Break: Kern, Pinot and Hesjedal.

Three quality climbers make the break today, all started well down in GC so they were allowed some lead. Kern started the stage 9
th
in the KOM classification with 23 points. However, all three had eyes on the polka dots today.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/3_zps36633354.jpg
Kern beats Pinot to this summit.

The three riders could hardly have split the KOM points on offer today. Kern and
Pinot would each take 50 KOM points and Hesjedal would take 44 KOM points.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/4_zps1381f261.jpg
Iban Mayo!

Surely it is too late for the Euskaltel rider to take victory today, he attacks with the break at 14'38. Moncoutié and Riblon (18th) would also attack, but could not match Mayo on the col d'Aubisque.

Race with 76 KM to go:

Hesjedal, Pinot and Kern

Lefèvre (Who was in no mans land for most of the day) @ 2'48

Mayo @ 14'00

Moncoutié and Ribon @ 14'20

Peloton @ 14'38

No action from the big favourites today, they will save it for the Tourmalet tomorrow.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/5_zps2a429fdb.jpg
Hesjedal summits the Col d'Aubisque.

The Canadian, has clearly recovered after his injuries, and is on a real charge today. He would drop both Pinot and Kern on the descent, one after the other. The victory was surely his with 57 KM to go, wasn't it?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/6_zpsf70438f1.jpg
Sagan creeping up the points ranking.

Sagan would take 9 points at the intermediate sprint point today, the only sprinter to take any points. This would move him into 2nd in that competition, level with Boonen on 163 points.

With 57 KM to go Mayo was 5'30 behind Hesjedal, It looked like a 3rd win was coming for Garmin - Cervelo.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/7_zpsaaf1ba47.jpg
Mayo will catch Hesjedal!

We still have over 10 KM to go and Iban Mayo has Ryder Hesjedal in his sights! Few can believe their eyes. Hesjedal, is really struggling to turn the pedals over, can he recover?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/8_zps23030374.jpg
Mayo passes Hesjedal knowing the victory is in bag!

Iban Mayo would fly straight past the Canadian and continue on for the stage victory in Pau. Knowing the victory was in the bag made the final few kilometres very sweet indeed.

Hesjedal, would hang on for 2nd but, loses more than 2'00 to Mayo in the final 10 KM. Kern holds on for third.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/9_zps1e01dc7f.jpg
Riblon and Moncoutié

Riblon would move up to 17th in GC and Moncoutié would move up to 24th, minor rewards for their efforts today.

Valverde and Pereiro lead the 80 man peloton home at 10'45 today.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/10_zps54a38be8.jpg
Win No.2 for Euskaltel - Euskadi

If you offered the Basque team two stage wins before this TDF they would gladly have accepted that. Thanks to Etxebarria and, now, Mayo they have multiple wins in the bank.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/11_zpsccf634d8.jpg
Kern: Polka dots for good?

Christophe Kern takes the polka dots. It is mathematically possible for onlu five riders to surpass him in that competition.

Stage 17: Pau - Col du Tourmalet

Spoiler

Stage Favourites:
***** Schleck (CSC) Contador (DSC) Froome (SKY)
**** Valverde (GCE) Virenque (QSI)

The final mountain stage. We end on the fabled Tourmalet. Rodriguez, Froome, Evans, Schleck .... who will be in yellow at the end of day?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/1_zpsd25fe0cb.jpg
10 tired riders make the break.

This deep into the race many are sure to be running on empty, the break today: Roy, Garate, Flecha, Nocentini, Weening, Knees, Navarro, Lofkvist, Halgand and Merckx.

Merckx (8th w/ 32 points) and Garate (10th w/30 points) were real dangers to take Kern's polka dots.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/2_zps43b88fb5.jpg
Hesjedal on the hunt!

The adage 'you can't keep a good man down' certainly applies to Ryder Hesjedal. After finishing empty yesterday he attacks with the break well up the road, no doubt, after some more KOM points.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/3_zps03331b5d.jpg
Honchar on the attack.

The Ukrainian has had one fantastic TDF. He would attack with 80 KM to go, well behind the original chasers. After Riblon leapfrogged him in GC yesterday he may be after revenge and retribution.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/4_zpsca8a6189.jpg
Garate claiming more KOM points.

Garate summits the Col du Souler first, if the break stays out-front he has a great chance of moving into the polka dots.

The race with 61 KM to go:

10 man break

Hesjedal @ 2'54

Honchar @ 7'29

Peloton @ 9'26

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/5_zpsdef2360e.jpg
The Grand Finale!

Before you know it there is just 16 KM left and we are on the Tourmalet. Hesjedal has bridged across to the original break who have a steady gap back to the peloton. Jeremy Roy attacks out of the break. The race:

11 man break

Honchar @ 2'30

Peloton @ 8'36

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/6_zps1ffe7d85.jpg
Mountain Train of Doom!

Kiryienka - Wiggins - Porte, that is the front of the peloton. It is clear Sky want Froome in the yellow jersey .... today!

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/7_zps1ce3a519.jpg
Voeckler on the attack!

Of the GC men, Tommy Voeckler, is the first to try his luck with 13 KM to go. Being just 2'27 down in GC, he won't be allowed to get away.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/8_zps3821a601.jpg
Meanwhile.....

The early break have caught Roy and look set to battle out the stage win amongst themselves.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/9_zpsf9f54f40.jpg
Froome attacks! / Valverde sacrifices himself

Under the 10 KM banner Chris Froome puts in a monster sized attack. He goes flying past Voeckler. Caisse d'Epargne send Valverde to the front to chase Froome down. Is it enough?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/10_zps287987a4.jpg
Froome is caught.

The next favourite to attack is Levi Leipheimer, but that attack quickly comes to nothing. Perhaps setting up something for Contador later on?

Garate Goes!

With 5 KM to go Juan Manuel Garate attacks the rest of the break with the favourites 2'30 behind. Lofkvist looks the most capable of catching the Spanish climber ... but can't. Is that the stage win for Garate?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/12_zps5ff7311e.jpg
Froome!

With 4 KM to go Froome puts in a big attack, the biggest yet. No can go with this one and the other favourites eat Froome's dust as he catches the stragglers from the break.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/13_zps648673d8.jpg
Froome into the last kilometre.

Froome has well over '40 on the yellow jersey heading into the last kilometre, he is in virtual yellow. Will we see anything more from Joaquím Rodríguez?

Andy Schleck distances the rest of the favourites, shortly followed by Contador in a reversal of stage 14.

The stage win is out of the question for Froome but he looks to be going into yellow.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/14_zps5e35961b.jpg
Hesjedal catches Garate!

The Canadian, using up all of his reserves, comes alongside Garate with 100 meters to go. This is the battle for the stage win and the polka dots jersey. Who would win?

It would be a narrow one ....
i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/15_zps7ad75ad1.jpg
Hesjedal takes it!

It is win no.3 for Garmin - Cervelo. Hesjedal wins one of the narrowest finishes up a climb you will ever see, Garate has to settle for second after a valiant attempt. Honchar would move up two places in GC today as he holds on for 3rd.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/16_zpsf9c227b3.jpg
Froome!

Froome finishes fourth on the stage, he was the quickest favourite up the Tourmalet. Andy Schleck, wasn't too far behind, moves onto the podium today replacing Valverde who sacrificed himself for Rodriguez.

Contador moves up to 10th with the likes of Klöden and Vinokourov struggling on the final climb.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/17_zpsc166071b.jpg
Hesjedal in polka dots.

What a battle we have had for the mountain jersey. There are no more categorised climbs at this Tour de France so only Hesjedal abandoning will see the jersey change hands.

Froome moves into yellow!

The performance of Team Sky has to be admired. They set the pace up the final climb and Froome was good enough to finish it off. He is now the overwhelming favourite to win the GC here.

Nice to see Froomey finally get that GC Lead Grin, now can he hold on to it Wink

MrUfo87
Just too many reports on one page. Pfft (Or too less comments) Hope Rodriguez can take back the leader jersey. Quite funny that it'd be his first grand tour victory if he can win this. Only nine stamps to go, but some of them will be very difficult, especially number 7.

The Rider
@ sutty - In the last two decisive mountain stages he has been the best from the GC group, so a worthy winner perhaps? A 51 KM flat TT should suit him, shouldn't it? Wink

@ MrUFo - Well if I wanted a lot of comments/ views on anything in this world the last thing I would do would be to create a PCM story! If you think Rodriguez can beat Froome in the TT, then you never know ...

Some stamps will be virtually impossible to get now. Oh well, at least we have 'unlocked' most of them. Wink

The sprinters teams, not for the first stage here, psych each other out. It looks as if we are destined for another break win.

The Dane used the attack of Garcia Acosta to get clear of the rest of the break before putting in a big attack himself. It will take some effort to bring this rouleur back.

Bak to win! Despite a good, stolid, chase from behind there was no bringing back Lars Bak. He would ride on for a great stage win.

So close so far for Cofidis.

After Martin Elmiger did most of the pace setting, it was Leonardo Duque who was the best of the rest, earning Cofidis' best rest result of this Tour de France to date. Stage winner, Etxebarria, rounds out the podium.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/10_zps45ed0fad.jpg
Cavendish wins the mass sprint.

Mark Cavendish would win the mass sprint, in addition to winning the battle at the intermediate sprint earlier today. Which begs the question: Why didn't HTC chase the break today?

Sagan would pick up 8 points on the stage, narrowly Freire's lead in the points competition to 10 points as the Spaniard only picked up 2 points. The battle for the green jersey will end on the Champs-Élysées.

***** Cancellara (CSC) Martin (HTC) Klöden (TMO)

The penultimate stage of this Tour de France is the last which will decide the GC. Froome looks a certainty to win the Tour de France, but can he show his dominance by winning in yellow? If not, will we have a TT specialist win today or will it be a GC rider with reserves who claims victory?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/1_zps55132f27.jpg
Quinziato

Manuel Quinziato would set one of the leading times of the day, however, at the end of the day he would finish 88th. We would have to wait for Martin (105th in GC) and Cancellara (91st in GC) to start before a real stage contender would enter the conversation today.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/2_zps6e1c1d92.jpg
Iker Camaño: 100th in GC

With 100 riders left to start these are the current standings:

E Dekker 1'14'47
D Pate + 1'20

Cavendish + 2'01
Tossato + 2'28

Much will change ....

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/3_zps4214477d.jpg
Oscar Freire!

It was not a day for the green jersey. Oscar Freire would finish 98th, to his relieve none of his rivals would gain any points today.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/4_zps1b3f0e21.jpg
Martin vs Cancellara: Here we go!

Two potential stage winners are at on course. The stage win could well be between these two. At the first checkpoint there is just 2 seconds between the two, in favour of Cancellara, with the rest of the field well behind.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/5_zpsbbe64ce4.jpg
Cancellara into the lead.

With a time of 1'12'41 Cancellara moves into the lead. He gets the better of Martin by '25 seconds later. Lars Boom, 1'15 down on Cancellara at the finish, is currently 3rd.

Will this be another victory against the clock for Cancellara?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/6_zpsdf4b87e6.jpg
Solid times for Iván Gutiérrez and Rogers.

The next riders to come close to Cancellara would finish '17 and '19 seconds down on Spartacus respectively. It is looking good for the CSC rider.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/7_zps53176be2.jpg
Wiggins shatters Cancellara's time!

He may have been a ways down in GC, but that didn't mean Brad wouldn't give it 100% today. He would take '15 seconds out of Cancellara at the first checkpoint and go on to finish '49 faster. That looked like the stage win right there.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/8_zpsd73abe14.jpg
Froome: Off the ramp.

Now everyone is out on course .. and ... we have a new best time at the first checkpoint!

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/9_zps126c1990.jpg
Christophe Moreau!

Times at the first checkpoint:

C Moreau 25'10
Evans + 2
Wiggins + 5
Froome + 14
Klöden + 16

The Frenchman is on a really good day, if he keeps this up the stage win may be his and, shockingly, a place on the GC podium! Froome may not be having the best TT of his life, but he is right up there and he is putting time into those immediately around him.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/10_zpsc19af4ba.jpg
Evans: Gunning for Glory!

Evans knows he can move up to 3rd with a good TT today. Spurred on by the possibility of a stage victory, he seems to be even more motivated.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/11_zps463f2640.jpg
L-R: Valverde, Schleck & Nibali.

All three are really struggling today, perhaps even more so because of the downpour which has covered the stage entirely. Schleck always knew it would have been unlikely to hold off Evans, however, Valverde and Nibali would have had eyes on being on the GC podium at the end of the stage but they are losing time to those around them.

Meanwhile, Moreau goes fastest at the second checkpoint '7 faster than Wiggins. Evans is only '4 behind in what looks to be a close run TT.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/12_zps812a4daf.jpg
It was always going to happen: Froome passes Rodríguez!

Froome passes the former yellow jersey signalling he has over 2'00 advantage. Joaquím Rodríguez is losing more time than he would want, way more.

Moreau looks to be riding to a fantastic stage win but also onto the podium. Going into the last kilometre less than 10 seconds separate Schleck, Rodríguez and Moreau from the 3rd place spot on the podium in the virtual GC.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/13_zps43813a07.jpg
The Day of Moreau!

What a time to come up with your best performance in this Tour de France. Christophe Moreau wins stage 19 and, in the process, moves up on to the podium. What a time for Crédit Agricole to win their first stage.

Sure, Moreau, is a quality man against the clock but few would have tipped him for such a dramatic stage victory. It was a close run battle with Cadel Evans throught the race, Cadel would finish just '5 down but would move up to 2nd in GC.

As expected Chris Froome retains the lead, with a solid performance. He will win the Ultimate Tour de France.

There is plenty of shifting in the top 10, Voeckler falls multiple places whilst Contador holds onto 10th despite a strong showing from Klöden. After starting the week with riders 1st and 3rd, Caisse d'Epargne will finish this Tour with Rodríguez in fifth as their best GC result.

The final stage is here. Why there is no battle for the yellow and polka dot jerseys, the battle for green is still very much alive.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/1_zps225a293f.jpg
Frank Renier leads the attacks.

Once the very early stage pleasantries were ended it was Frank Renier who started the attacking. It is one of the first times we have seen this pure rouleur in this Tour de France.

He would be joined in a 14 man break by: Nocentini, Auge, Garcia Acosta, Dean, Quinziato, Vasseur, Sieberg, Camano, Oss, Gautier, Arvesen, Tjallingi, Renier and Geslin.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/2_zps1595042f.jpg
Virenque leads the peloton.

It if wasn't for Mercado and Boonen there would, no doubt be a lot of criticism for Virenque, who hasn't shown much in this Tour de France. However, it was good to see him set pace for a while with a smile on his face.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/3_zpsc08afeca.jpg
A table, s'il vous plait!

With the weather, at its harshest today, surmising to little more than a gentle breeze today it was an easy enough ride for yellow jersey, Chris Froome. There was plenty of time for jokes before the Champs-Élysées.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/4_zpsebbafcec.jpg
52 KM to go: The race for green hots up!

Cavendish claims the only point on offer at the intermediate sprint, after the break mopped up most of the points. Cavendish has won more intermediate battles between the sprinters than any other contender for the green jersey, yet he languishes well behind Freire in the green jersey standings.

However, it is still, technically, possible for Cav to win the green jersey at this Ultimate Tour de France.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/5_zps964d8098.jpg
Rounding that fabled bend!

Quickstep, Fasso Bortolo and HTC are determined to bring the break back today.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/6_zps45b22763.jpg
Nocentini: The last survivor.

It was perhaps fitting that an AG2R Prévoyance rider was the last to survive before being captured today. The French team have won two epic and memorable stages from breakaways.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/7_zpsef5e0aa0.jpg
The Climax!

Tosatto leads the race and the peloton as a showdown between some of the top sprinters in history beckons.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/8_zps534f0db3.jpg
The race with but hundreds of meters left:

Tosatto
Pozzato
Petacchi -- Hushovd
Bettini -- Cooke
Steels
Boonen
McEwen
Zabel
Freire --- Eisel
Hondo --- Renshaw
Sagan --- Cavendish

---- Kiryienka
--- Froome

Fasso Bortolo are in pole position here, HTC certainly have some way to go from this position.

RENSHAW! .......

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/10_zps7c273093.jpg

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/11_zps339436a9.jpg
Cooke burst through!

It is Baden Cooke who is the first sprinter to strike out, whilst the rest of the sprinters leave their final effort very very late. Have the big names been too cautious about sprinting too early?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/12_zps6b1e77d7.jpg

.................

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/13_zps4f372e62.jpg
Cooke wins on the Champs-Élysées!

FDJ leave it to the very last to win their first stage of this Tour de France through Baden Cooke. The Aussie may be considered the slowest out of the top 10 here, however, he proved today it is more important to sprint at the right time rather than to be the fastest after three weeks of racing. FDJ become the 14th team to win a stage here.

Oscar Freire, will win the green jersey, after finishing second. Boonen's third place finish sees him move back up to second in the points standings, he will be rueing Steegman's retirement on stage 17 as he would have been a valuable lead-out man today.

Cavendish finishes 7th. Enough said. By the time he launched his sprint Cooke had practically won already. After three weeks of racing and numerous falls his judgement is a bit jaded.

All rides finish together. Chris Froome wins the ultimate Tour de France.
