2018 kicked of with a bang with UCIs crown jewel, the Tour Down Under, perhaps the third biggest World Tour-race outside of Europe. The Aussies must be proud. Nicholas Roche took the win, and gave the Irish a good start. Ireland and Great Britain have in the reent years marked themselfs as formidable cycling powers, but no one expected what was to come.
During the season, GB and Ireland took home a total of 11 World Tour-wins, an unprecedented number. Couple that with Nibalis 4 and Sagans three it was clear that there weren't much to go around. There were a few surprises, though. Kristoff proved that there is no such thing as the "curse of the rainbow jersey" by winning E3 and G-W while Terpstra took a long awaited dutch Monument-win.
Chris Froome, arguably the best stage racer in the world at the moment hadn't done the Giro in a while, but was back in Italy to give it a go. And what a go it was, beating Intxausti by more tha 7 minutes aswell as taking the point jersey. As if winning the Giro wasn't enough, he yet again took part in the Tour de France, eager to win his 4th title in 6 years. Betancur led the race for most of the first two weeks, but when we hit the mountains the colombian had to give in. Froome was to strong and before the final time trial he had the better of 2 minutes down to nr. 2, thus clinching his 4th TdF and the big question is; can he equal or even surpass legends such as Merckx?
Back to the Giro, which gave us a bit of a surprise, three american riders in the top 10 wasn't expected, Howes being the biggest shock of them all. Another nation who did well, but didn't win, was Colombia who got an unprecedented four riders in the top 10 in the Tour! Also, take care to notice the winner of the youth jersey, the Norwegian sprinter Sondre Holst Enger. A great performance, but it should be noted that there were only 4 riders under the age of 25 in this years TdF.
Even though Colombia got four top 10 finishers in France, this was still a decent season seeing as how they won the Vuelta with Henao. Edvald Boasson Hagens 3rd place was unexpected, aswell as Martins 2nd place.
The British and Irish riders had dominated the cycling circus up until this point. The World Championships were no exception! Chris Froome did what he had failed to do several times and won the ITT. Daniel Martin also impressed us by taking the road race, making this a year to remember for him.

I'll be uploading some photos in 2020 since not that much has changed yet, but give it a year
Froome is by far the best GT-rider there is, he's miles ahead of the rest. From the top of my head he's got 85 MO, 79 HILL, 83 TT.

Vuelta these years must've had a dramatic increase in TT kms or had surprisingly crap competition. Otherwise I cannot see how EBH managed his results.

If there is one word to describe this season it is "record breaking". Okay, two words, maybe. Several riders either took records, equaled them or improved them this year. Some of the new names written with golden letters include Nibali for his 3rd Paris-Nice in a row, Cavendish for his 6th Milan-Sanremo, just one behind Merckx' record of 7, and Vanmarcke for his 3rd RVV, thereby equaling the record.
Many have wondered whatever happened to Zdenek Stybar, the great cobble-specialist. He hasn't had a single noteworthy results untill now when he won Gent-Wevelgem. The same can be said for Thomas De Gendt who has been struggling for several years and who hasn't quite found his place. This year he impressed by winning L-B-L, but one result alone makes no career.
In GT-news, Chris Froome said early on that his major goal was winning his 5th TdF. Starting with the Giro, some wondered if he would be in top shape. That no one knows, but he did struggle a little bit before we hit the mountains. Up untill the last week Froome was 2nd behind Talansky, 39'' behind. However, as the slopes got steeper, the machine started and the Giro was settled long before the finish line.
By such a show of power Froome was the big favourite for the Tour de France, but in the previous races after the Giro he had been showing sings that he was running on 100%. Some of you might remember the 2015-Tour where Froome crashed out on the cobbled section before Roubaix, thereby ending his winning run. Well, in 2019 the circus was back, this time the route went from Wanze to Arenberg.
Lightning might not strike twice, but back luck strikes whenever it feels like it. On stage 4, on the cobbled section, just like in 2015, Froome crashed out and had to withdraw with a badly injured elbow. This left the playing field open to Carlos Betancur who took a desicive win ahead of surprise Geraint Thomas. Two more surprises in the top 10; Andy Shleck and Edvald Boasson Hagen, who also win the polka jersey. Judging by the last years performance, Shleck being the biggest shock.
Winning the Tour de FRance wasn't enough and Betancur went along and took the double, just like Froome did a few years back. Jelle Vanendert shocked many by taking the 2nd place ahead of such strong riders as Majka and Nibali.
Wrapping up the season, Tony Martin showed that last year was a fluke by taking his 7th ITT-win, and absolutely unprecedented number and a record which might trully stand the test of time. In the road race, Alexander Kristoff, who has evolved into a top rier the last few years, outsprinted König for his 2nd World Championship title. Kristoff has regularly been on the podium in nrealy all flat GT-stages aswell as the classics, but a major trophy (apart from the WC) still elude him.

Surprised that Quintana didn't do more, looking at his stats above
Vanendert 2nd in the Vuelta is quite a shock as well.
Also surprised by the fact that there's still no regen at all that's winning races.

Regens just don't in PCM13, especially if you use Daily DB XMLs, but that's a conversation for another thread. It'll be a long long while till any good regen does well I think, with any XML. |

Dan winning Lombardia, though sadly he was out of the rainbow jersey by then.
On a side note, does Ireland have a worlds team in PCM 13 or is that edited?
