Glad to see that you have some motivation back Smile

And a Good team time trial from the guys Wink

Thanks guys. I can't promise anything, but at the moment, I have some motivation again and I've finished the Tour of Qatar, so for the next few days, updates are ensured.

Pre-Race Tactics

As a team, we wanted to trying to improve Matthew's third place from stage one today. With Brett Lancaster failing to participate in the lead out back then, I got my chance to ride for Matthew in the final today, thus I didn't have to do any work before. I'm still not in top shape, but I hoped I would do a good job.

The Race

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-1_zps29fb5322.jpg

Km 10 of 140

We showed our colours in the early phase of the break in person of Adam Yates, but his attack didn't make it.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-2_zps14c9f277.jpg

Km 43 of 140

Protected by Mitch Docker, I sat in the first third of the pack. Meanwhile, a four men break had established itself in front, with a solid advantage.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-3_zpsfcece5e7.jpg

Km 111 of 140

But at the last intermediate sprint, the advantage had decreased to under two minutes. The expected mass sprint seemed inevitable.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-4_zpsb67bfddc.jpg

Km 135 of 140

And so it was. With 5 kilometers to go, I sat in third position of our sprint train, behind me Jens Keukeleire and Matty Goss. Lampre, Trek and MTN were also going strong while Cavendish was quite a bit behind.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-5_zps3f3efebf.jpg

Km 137 of 140

This time, Brett delivered perfectly. Now, it was my turn to shine.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-6_zpsc98bc1a2.jpg

Km 138 of 140

But I failed. The others were simply faster than me, it felt like I was going backwards. I've let the team down.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-7_zps94dc16e7.jpg

Km 139 of 140

However, Matt was amazing, he had a high speed and slipped between the riders in front of him. On the home strech, he was suddenly in a great position.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-8_zps1ef9e93f.jpg

Km 140 of 140

And he did it! Heinrich Haussler again only runner up, Cavendish way behind on six. A fantastic result for us! I closely miss the Top 20.

Résumé

Above all, I'm very happy about the stage win today, it is a team sport after all, and if the team succeeds, you succeed.

But still. The win is almost exclusively Matty's achievement. I couldn't help the team quite the way I wanted to and probably got set back in the team hierarchy. But oh well. We're having a little party down at the bar, so that's where I'm heading now.

Yours,

Great result for Goss and absolutely great layout of this story. But, if you could only change your graphic settings a bit, it's really hard to make difference between teams/riders at your current settings and it's somehow too bright.

Pre-Race Tactics

I proved yesterday that I might not be ready yet to be an essential part in the lead out. However, and I can't thank him enough for that, the DS worshipped my couraged performanced and thus gave me a free role for today. That means: I had no duties whatsoever during the main part of the race and in the sprint, I could try and take a shot for myself. The DS said he wanted to see how I'd do on my own.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-1_zps4cba8b24.jpg

Km 4 of 150

Just like yesterday, Adam Yates tried his luck within the first kilometers.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-2_zps61f017fa.jpg

Km 42 of 150

And this time, he succeeded. Joining a group of five, they reached a maximum advance of 5'30.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-3_zps29eb9e15.jpg

Km 139 of 150

Fast forward, the last escapee was caught with 11kms to go. Our sprint train for Matty was already in a good position on the left while I found myself on the wheel of Mark Cavendish.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-4_zpsb1114f7c.jpg

Km 145 of 150

Our train was going great and took the front quite early. I, however, had lost Cavendish's wheel who was also going forward quickly. Now, I had to move!

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-5_zpsc2a614ae.jpg

Km 147 of 150

MTN came out of nowhere to bring Gerald Ciolek to the front. Overall leader Heinrich Haussler was in their slipstream while I was amongst the Top 10 now, but already quite exhausted.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-6_zps184fc143.jpg

Km 148 of 150

Lancaster was pushing hard to bring Goss in a better position, but Haussler and Cavendish were also going great. I was trying my best to hold on.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-7_zps8882fac6.jpg

Km 149 of 150

Curiously enough, Cavendish lost the wheel of his lead out man Renshaw, who was leading in the final meters. But Gossy and the MTN men on the other side of the road seemed faster.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-8_zps4cf17cc0.jpg

Km 150 of 150

And he did it again! Matthew Goss with a back to back stage win and advances to second place overall!

In contrary to yesterday, I can enjoy Matthew's stage win without restrictions. Sure, the 20th place wasn't exactly what I had hoped for, but I know my faults and this is an important learning experience.

Two stages left, I hope I'll get another chance to prove myself.

Until then,

The Race

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/5-1_zps3cf00c1b.jpg

Km 2 of 145

At the start of the race, I was at front with Matthew. The first attacks came before our other team mates could catch up with us, and suddenly I heard "Go, Caleb!", from the team radio. I needed a few seconds to process, but then I went!

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/5-2_zps4ee5bc89.jpg

Km 21 of 145

The next kilometers were hectic, more attacks kept coming and I wasn't quite sure how to handle the situation. But eventually, I managed to be part of the 5 men break of the day, along with Parinello (Androni), Cammaerts (Cofidis), Montaguti (Ag2r) and Goesinnen (Drapac).

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/5-3_zpsb63f83f7.jpg

Km 60 of 145

At the first intermediate sprint, I tested my legs a little. Of course I was easily the fastest in the group, but the acceleration hurt more than it should have. That couldn't be a good sign.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/5-4_zpsb9e371a9.jpg

Km 104 of 145

After the second intermediate sprint, my work was done. Our advance was being reduced anyway, so I sat back.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/5-5_zpsb0987b96.jpg

Km 122 of 145

A little later, my companions accelerated in a last attempt to stay clear, but after a quick chat with the DS, I decided to fall back into the peloton. No use in wasting my energy.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/5-6_zps6c2cfff8.jpg

Km 137 of 145

It came down to another bunch sprint and the team was doing yet another fantastic lead out. Meanwhile, I caught Cavendish's wheel a couple of rows behind.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/5-7_zps90467d36.jpg

Km 142 of 145

As the sprint was about to start, I was still rather far back. Omega Pharma really weren't on top of their game here. More importantly, though, my team mates were doing great up front.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/5-8_zps5004d4c4.jpg

Km 2 of 145

Eventually, I came from too far behind and I lacked the power after my efforts to improve yesterday's result. But my result doesn't matter anyway, since Matty celebrated another dominant win, thus taking over the overall lead.

Résumé

My goodness, we're doing well! Our sprint train runs perfect (now that I'm out ... but no hard feelings there!) and Matt is in great shape - or at least in much better shape than all the others. Plus, it's amazing how Omega Pharma keeps on ruining their lead outs.

The DS had a quick talk with me, saying that he appreciated my efforts today and how it was a difficult task for an unexperienced rider like me to get into the break. These words are really important to me: Since I'm still lacking the ultimate punch in the sprint, it's great to know that I can help the team nevertheless.

There's only one stage left to go now and Matty's in yellow. Let's bring it home, boys!

Pre-Race Tactics

Having the leader's jersey, the plan was plain and simple: Keep it! Ideally, we wanted to put a rider in the break again, if that didn't work out, the whole team would have to work hard. In the finale, we'd try to bring it home with our standard sprint train, and I wanted to try to improve my personal best, which so far was a 20th place.

The Race

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/6-1_zps1961d988.jpg

Km 23 of 106

Matthew enjoyed his first day in a leader's jersey this year. Jens and I covered him, while Mitch Docker was in the break. So far, everything went as planned.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/6-2_zpsf8182a95.jpg

Km 95 of 106

Within the last 15 kms, the pace was insane. The last remaining escapees were about to be caught and the sprint trains were starting to form. We were going decent on the right side, while I was once again on Cavendish's wheel, who was looking better today.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/6-3_zps11d4f0f8.jpg

Km 98 of 106

Heading first into a curve, Diego Ulissi hit the ground. It was amazing that only two other riders went down with him. The sprint could continue

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/6-4_zpsc79ebab4.jpg

Km 101 of 106

I tried to jump from wheel to wheel and eventually found myself behind the MTN train. Unfortunately, our own train didn't quite work this time.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/6-5_zps4b6e60da.jpg

Km 103 of 106

However, things changed a bit before the sprint finally started. We did manage to bring Gossy in a good position, but he looked rather exhausted. I found myself a little further behind. Nizzolo and Haussler on the left are the ones who could still be a danger for us.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/6-7_zpsb2ff3199.jpg

Km 105 of 106

Closing in on the flamme rouge, I'm suddenly in seventh or eigth position. Goss still sits behind Brett with Cavendish and Haussler going strong.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/6-8_zps1d127f71.jpg

Km 106 of 106

I eventually outsprint Brett for 16th. But the most important thing was happening up front. Matthew only achieved a fifth place. Haussler was amazingly fast, but this time, when it really mattered, Cav did what he usually does and took the stage, saving Matty's overall win.

Final Résumé

What a heartbeat finish. This time we can really thank Cavendish. The whole train didn't work that well today and Matthew didn't have the final punch either, so we got a little lucky. Still, with three stage wins, there's no doubt that Matt is the deserved winner of this race.

As for myself, I think it was a good start to my professional career. It really had everything: Carrying water bottles and falling back, a day in the break, a team time trial and a couple of Top 25 finishes. Not too shabby, I'd say.

The whole squad will stay together and head for the Tour of Oman now, where I'll encounter some more hilly and mountaneous terrain for the first time. But don't worry, there'll be some sprinting to do as well!

I hope you stay tuned, and if you like, don't hesitate to share your opinion on my first racing.

Yours,
