Giro d'Italia Week One
Stage 3
It's Brouwers who takes the stage win (and the Maglia Rosa)! A fantastic performance by the rider who finished this sprint perfectly after strong performances on the first day and narrowly missing out on pink on the second day. Shonak Only Tom Dumoulin could finish in the front group, we should see Argos riders in the breakaway now.
Stage 4
It’s clearly his triumph and Nibali sets the road straight for another Giro d’Italia victory. Behind him, Group Porte rushes in with Kreuziger taking 2nd and Pellizotti coming in third. Big loser of the day is without a doubt Quintana, who shows what could have been possible by outsprinting anybody in the peloton and trying to limit his losses. Shonak

Our best finisher is Warren Barguil, too top 10s on mountain stages is a great performance for himself and the team. He was on the attack and was a thrill to watch. A poor TTT and weaknesses on hamper his performance on paper.
Warren Barguil
Tom Dumoulin
Luka Mezgec
Bert De Backer
Tobias Ludvigsson

Will Clarke
Roy Curvers

Warren was our best finisher in Switzerland, he finished 27th in the general classification. A good result was always going to be difficult with the two time trials in 6 days. However a split in the peloton and the caliber of climbers here proved to be too much for the Frenchman. |

Giro d'Italia Week One
Stage 5
Arndt was in the breakaway today with Oliveira (RTL)
Winner of the day was Carlos Bentancur, the Colombian became the 5th wearer of the pink jersey in as many victories.
Stage 6
Today's stage was always going to throw up a sprint, and it did. Mark Cavendish took his first stage of this editions Giro d'italia. He beat Aussie and Orica duo Michael Matthews and Matt Goss to the line. The Manx Missile takes over the red jersey sprinters competition. He will be looking to win this too complete his set of grand tour points jersey wins.
There was more action further down the field though but no in the way Movistar and Quintana would have hoped. The Colombian climber was caught in two crashes effectively ending his GC title hopes.
Stage 7
Peterson was in the break. Although it didn't last long as they were caught before the half way stage.
Carlos Betancur makes it two in two to extend his lead at the top of the general classification. He out sprinted Gerrans, Hesjedal, Nibali and Quintana.

Giro d'Italia Week Two
Stage 8
Fabian Cancellara was the likely victor in this time trial. 50 seconds was the deficient back to 2nd place Wilco Kelderman. Dumoulin came in 7th +1'19".
Stage 9
Success for Argos-Shimano! It's Simon Geschke! Part of the break of the day and 7km he attacked. He time trialled his way to the finish and gives us our first win of part 2! First and only goal achieved.
Stage 10
Quintana wins his first stage of the Giro despite his recent disappointments. A top 10 GC is still achievable for the young Movistar stage racer.
Stage 11
In similar to our win, Euskaltel's Gorka Verdugo started in the break of the day and finishing alone, 47 seconds in front of his breakaway companion. Gora Gorka!

Well, that was three weeks of fun!
But I can now say I have finished a Grand Tour. Arriving in Milan was such a great feeling after the brutal race I had survived. I have now joined the small group of teenagers who have finished a Grand Tour.
For me, the problem was, and is always likely to be, the flat stages at the start. These guys don't mess about when they try to bring the breakaway back and I just couldn't keep up with the much bigger riders. Something I will definitely have to work on but it will always be a weakness. I'm a bit "Colombian" in that regard .
My best day of the race was probably stage 14, which, coincidentally, was widely regarded as the best stage of the race in general. I got into the early break with five other guys and we worked well together but the peloton were not messing about and we were only five minutes ahead when we hit the climb of Sestriere.
From then on, it descended into hell as the snow and fog came. The TV cameras were struggling to get any pictures but I can assure you I was there, as one of the first guys to hit the top of the climb. Still, this weather was not what the doctor ordered and my whole body went into survival mode, just trying to get to the end.
Just as we were about to hit the final climb up to Monte Jafferau, I tried one final attack with De Greef and Gusev but, no, it wasn't to be and I was soon caught by the express train of GC contenders, who went past me like I was an amateur. I then dropped back to help pace Geschke and Dumoulin up the climb, as I did on most mountain stages.
I also made the breakaway on stage 16, along with Cancellara, which was a very intimidating experience. He's twice the size of me! I made a few mistakes near the end with my tired legs and tired mind and had to settle for a still very good sixth place. After that, I was very quiet, as my legs were done.
Simon managed a stage win early on in the race as well, which meant our race was a success. Personally, I really enjoyed the experience when I wasn't in agonising pain and found it quite easy to get in to a comfortable rhythm on the long climbs. But I will need to improve in every area to achieve something more than a couple of breakaway attempts. In the end (not that it really matters), I finished in 66th position, only an hour and a half off the podium . I was 13th in the young riders' competition, again, an hour and a half behind the winner, Quintana.
A long way to go, but I'll get there somehow.

Week Two
Stage 12
In a Giro d'Italia fall of surprises, a day where you would assume the sprinters will want to take a rare opportunity of a stage win but they left the Garmin man Jakob Rathe enough metres to win from the break. The peloton did run him close with Goss claiming second and the same time as the winner.
Stage 13
A day with a stuff finish, too tough for the sprinters anyway but not enough to seperate the pink jersey contenders, this day had more a breakaway feel to it. Argos have already grabbed a win from the break with Grescke, so today Tom got himself in the group. Unfortunately he came in second after being outsmarted by Eros Capecchi, still an awesome result for him and team.
Sage 14
Young climbing talent Josh Burton was in the break for us, if your not Nibali or Betancur it is hard to got yourself seen in the mountain stages. His group was eventually caught and the stage was won by Richie Porte who sits strong in 3rd overall.

For normal teams, hard and easy would be switched around
Countered goals:
Easy goal: Top 10 Lombardia
Medium goal: Top 5 GC Britain
Hard goal: Stage Win Burgos
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Argos-Shimano are happy to announce that 2 new riders will be joining the team under the transformation to Giant-Shimano for the 2014 season. Peter Pal and Pierre da la Montagne are the French 21 year old duo who aren't just for the future.
Peter Pal
Top 10s in Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Flanders are certainly something to shout about in your first year. Peter gives us a solid challenge one the cobbles, something the squad lack last season. We are hoping he can go further for Giant next year.
Pierre da la Montagne
Young GC rider Pierre will be looking at following the footsteps of what Ghita did this year. Talented in the time trials just as in his climbing, he will be looking to do well in one week races and will most likely be coming up against the best. You may see him surprise in a grand tour too. |

Yeah, good choice there.
Obviously good transfers for Argos, although I doubt those riders will improve much.

Well, that's season one done and dusted. A "fun" introduction to the World Tour for little Josh here at the fantastic setup of Argos Shimano. The second half of my season was a lot quiter than the first. I rode San Sebastian, though I might as well not have bothered, then I flew to Colorado for the USAPCC, a race usually decided in the high altitude peaks of the Rockies. Not this year. It was a boring race that I couldn't make any impression on but we did get a stage win in the team thanks to Arndt, so it was worth the journey.
Then it was back home for the Tour of Britain, a race I'd targeted for a while after the team announced we'd be taking part. Unfortunately, there were two things that ruined my hopes, Team Sky and the fact that some idiot had put a TT in the race. Still, I was determined to show myself with the race all over the TV at home and looked to the harder stages in the middle of the race to make my mark. I think I did...
First task was to make a breakaway, which I managed to do on stage five in Wales. The hard climb of Caerphilly Mountain suited me so I knew this was my best chance in the race. After checking out my competition during the stage, I realised I was the best on the steep climbs that lay ahead, so went on the attack early on. I dropped everyone else on the first time up Caerphilly Mountain and soloed to the finish line for my first Pro win despite lapped riders partially ruining my moment in the spotlight.
That moved me into the top ten on GC and after a massive split on the final stage caught out a few big names, I claimed an incredible 6th place, just behind Geraint Thomas. A great way to finish the season and prove I have what it takes to my new manager and the media.
On that subject, I'm off. Thanks to the entire team at Argos, especially the manager, for the support and trust. Riding a Grand Tour and winning a stage in my home race is something I wouldn't have expected in my debut year and I look forward to hopefully improving on it with Cannondale next year.
Farewell.
