This is the first of our seaon goals. We need a top 10 and have sent a strong team, that should be able to give us at least that.

We had talked about making it a hard race on the hills, but apparently everyone had forgotten about when it came to it.

i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/Junk/PCM0213_zpsf969c114.jpg
So it came to a sprint finish, but still no sign of a proper team effort.

Fortunately JJ was able to get a 4th place on his own with Urtasun finishing just outside the top 10.

Azaroa - November

Last Month on Euskaltel - Euskadi
It wasn’t the most eventful month imaginable with only five racedays namely Algarve and Almería.

In Volta ao Algarve we came chasing stage wins on the roads where the team got its first victory back in 1995. Rubén Pérez came the closest with his 2nd place on the first stage, while our main hopes failed completely in the GC battle. Good thing Rubén was there to save our honour!
i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/Junk/PCM0223_zpscfdf3ad5.jpg
From there we went on to the first Spanish race of the season: Clásica de Almería. Being Spanish it was also a very important race for us, which was emphasized by the UCI expecting top 10. We sent a very strong team, that did exactly what they came for though much more anonymous than we had hoped. Good job by Lobato getting 4th.

Riders not mentioned did not race this month

Rider of the Month

Picking Lobato for the second year in a row would seem the obvious choice, but strictly speaking he just did what was expected of him and one rider did more than that.
d.yimg.com/i/ng/sp/reuters/20110720/16/486358277-20072011164725.jpg

We expected pretty much nothing from Rubén Pérez in Algarve, but he gave us to top 10’s and even a 2nd place. On top of that he was the only of our riders, who didn’t underperformed in that race.

Coming Up

First of it's time for cobbles, where Rudy Verboven has been given captaincy with a group of seven supporting him in every cobbled race.

IT will be exciting to see what the boys in Orange are able to do on unfamiliar terrain...

A Glimpse of History

Roberto Laiseka was born on the 17th of June 1969 in Guernica and became one of the most important riders in the early years of the team.
1.bp.blogspot.com/-FxUEeCEJX5o/UhUnqBFh4OI/AAAAAAAAAAg/BxwtidYM0VY/s1600/1373141705laiseka.jpg

He became both the rider to get us our first GT stage win in the 1999 Vuelta and our first Tour de France stage on Luz Ardiden in 2001, where Sánches won 10 years later. The latter probably the most important win for our team in terms of being recognized as a serious contender on the cycling scene. And not only that, but it also helped promote the cause of Basque independence as he was more or less carried to the top by an ocean of Basque fans who helped the world discover our fight.
In between the two he became the first Euskaltel-rider to finish inside the top 10 of a Grand Tour.

Roberto was one of the greats of our team. Not only did he get us our first major results and through that the proper recognition as a team, but he also stayed with the team for the entirety of his career even though he must have gotten offers from more prominent teams with more money.

The importance of his career only makes the end so much more tragic. In the 2006 Giro d’Italia he took a nasty fall that really hurt his knee. He tried getting back, but at the end of the season he decided that he had to retire due to the injury. A sad end to a glorious career.

He is still very much alive and with an interest in the sport as he earlier this season made some critics of the team management regarding their multinational policies. A criticism that is supported by the current management. We are on a road to restoring the team to be more like it was in Laiseka’s time.

Let’s remember his great win in the Tour by reviewing the final part of the climb.

Hi fans,

Some mixed feelings after Kuurne. The race was great and the fans.. Well you just can't compare Belgian cycling fans to anything else, you see it on tv but you don't fully feel it until you ride through them. It was good to be back on home soil, and I was ready for a good result.

The race started well for us, Ioannis Tamouridis got in the break and I got the support of my team mates in the peloton. But surprisingly, the gap didn't go down. I got a bit annoyed, because even though Ioannis was in the break, I felt good. But the team comes first so we didn't do anything.

And they went on right to the finish line, Ioannis got a good result, finishing 8th. I joined the sprint with the peloton and got a nice 3rd place. Unfortunately, 16 riders had finished already, so I only managed a 19th place.

I'm glad I earned points for the team and got my goal of a top 20, but I'm feeling very annoyed right now. What if the break was brought back? Would I have finished on the podium? My manager tells me to stop thinking about it, but I can't. I won't be sleeping well tonight.

~ Rudy

Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne has the honour of being the first cobbled race this team have ever cared even the slightest about. Rudy Verboven is the undisputed captain here and the team supporting him is largely the same as will race the other cobbled races.

To make sure we didn't have to work in the peloton Ioannis went in the break right from the start.

At first they are caught on Oude Kwaremont, but almost imediately they split of the front again, only this time Degenkolb was in there as well.

With Tamouridis in the front all the others were told to take good care of Rudy.

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/PCM0024_zps9c31f80b.jpg

A few riders came up to the break and a few riders fell behind, but Ioannis kept his place.

In the end that gave the Greek rider a surprising top 10 while Verboven did very well to finish 3rd in the pelotons sprint.

Two Euskaltel-riders awarded points in a cobbled race. This is in deed new times!

In contrast to many other teams we have no specific goals for Paris - Nice.
That has left room for Cristiano de las Campos to make his debut for us in a free/leading rolse.
He will have good support, but everyone has been told to keep their eyes open for whatever opportunitites might arise.

Time trials are far from a speciality of ours. On top of that the best TT'ers are sent to Italy to do some damage control in the TTT openeing Tirreno - Adriatico.

That showed today...

A quiet day for us.
Very quiet..
If it hadn't been for the results table I wouldn't even be sure we were there...
i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag31/Selwink/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0296_zpsb5684175.jpg

Though if you look careful you can just spot a couple of our riders behind the late crash. It didn't affect us in any way though.

Today the guys decided to play hide-and-seek and won since no one saw us all day...

On paper this was the best stage yet in the race for us.
i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag31/Selwink/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0378_zps6d12cb3c.jpg

Egoi and Ion showed the jersey nicely in breaks all day, but in the end it became another sprint...

Egoi and Rubén protected Cristiano well to make sure he didn't lose any time in the split.

I expected the guys to show the jersey on this hard hilly stage but alas...

Not only didn't we see anything of them, they even climbed worse than Kittel!
That also eliminates any dreams of a GC surprise we had from de las Campos.

Today was the day we had hoped Cristiano would shine, but the big shots stole the spotlight before he had a chance to shine.

In the end he came to the line in the same group as Van Garderen, who finished 7th. Unfortunately Cristiano didn't have much left and "only" got a 12th place.

By now we the guys really needed to start showing something!

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag31/Selwink/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0455_zpsf9c8b1ec.jpg

Ion Izagirre went away right at the start.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag31/Selwink/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0459_zps0fe49998.jpg

He got some good riders with him and the break looked to be succesful while Ion even took the most mountain points along the way putting him in the dotted jersey.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag31/Selwink/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0462_zps34918343.jpg

Not being a top sprinter Ion decided to try to surprise the rest of the brak with an early attack and almost suceeded.

He probably should have waited for the sprint, but a 4th place and the mountiain jersey is enough to make me happy today!

A time trial up a mountain is certainly better than one on flat roads, but still not a thing where this team can really compete...

While there's no pressure on the guys in France things are quite different in this race.
With a TTT on the first stage we have sent a lot of our best TT'ers to avoid looking like complete bafoons on that stage.

Samuel Sánchez is obviously the captain of the team and with some strong support by Mikel, Mikel, Mikel, Miguel and the others anything less than an overall top 10 from Sammy will be considered a failure almost big enough to get him a spot on the cobbles-squad!

Samuel Sánchez

TTT's are probably our least favourite discipline in general.

imageshack.com/a/img856/4591/ih7w.jpg

For this race we sent a team almost st strong as we could, which resulted in us not being last. That has to count fro soemthing right?

Anyway a time loss of 38 seconds isn't too bad...

imageshack.com/a/img28/2479/lsyk.jpg

A flat stage means that we need to go for the break. The boys did what they could early on, but in the end they missed out on the main break and again when it came to the odd chance for a top 10 in the sprint.

Nothing lost and nothing won on this one.

imageshack.com/a/img855/1111/iw7a.jpg

Once again we went for the break. Ioannis got away, but with his strong show from the break in Kuurne last month the others wouldn't let him get away.

Mountains on the rout means that it's time for us to start showing ourselves.
imageshack.com/a/img713/3047/5tae.jpg

The team did well to protect Samuel the first 100 km of the stage. And then he attacked and immediately got away. Several others both joined him and were left behind over the last 50 km of the stage, but Sammy was just looking brilliant today.

Unfortunately so were Quintana, who came blasting to take the stage win in the last few meters of the stage.

This was one of the harder stages.
imageshack.com/a/img802/8162/8xzo.jpg

Vrecer took his chances and put on a great show in the break early on. To no surprise they weren't allowed to go all the way, but at least he showed the jersey beatifully.

After his great race yesterday Samuel didn't quite have the legs today and finished 12 dropping to 10th in the GC.

First we missed out on the break, but then Gorka found his way up there along with Vaugrenard.
imageshack.com/a/img607/7229/3lwa.jpg

They were given a huge lead and were to decide teh stage between each other.
Unfortunately Gorka is still not in any way a sprinter...

To be honest we would prefer if timetrials were disbanded completely, but we have to ride them sometimes.

Sammy went out aiming to defend his spot in the top 10 and so he did in a not that impressive manner...

The organizers spoke Italian all the time, so we never really got around to understanding what happened.

It turns out that when the race radio spoke of Sagan they spoke about him breaking away while we thought they named the favourites.

That pretty much ruined all the race for Verboven & Co as no one seemed to have the motivation to put in a strong sprint for 17th after realizing the rest was gone...

Good morning Mr. Etxeberdea,

Just want to say I'm sorry for my performance in Strade Bianche. I think I started eating a bit late and when the attacks came, I just couldn't respond. Rookie mistake, I know. It won't happen again!

I hope I'm still in the team for Milan - San Remo?

Rudy

Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Hmm... Sounds like I need to have a chat with some of your team mates. With 4 guys over 30 on the team with the main task of helping and guiding you someone should have made sure to give you something to eat earlier. I would have expected the Germans to be better at following orders.

Don't hesitate to ask them to pick someyhing up for you next time!

And don't worry: You're still set for Sanremo, I trust you have learned a valuable lesson today...
Also we will send a lot stronger team to that race than we sent to Bianche!

With Tirreno overwith and Paris - Nice also coming close to an end it's time to look towards the first monument of the season.

Milano - Sanremo is traditionally a race for the tough sprinters and finisheurs. It's also a race where we traditionally doesn't do very well...

That means that the team will have no pressure at all on them. We hope for a top 20 and both Verboven and Lobato could achieve that on a good day as could some of the others if a break should prove more resilient than expected.

The racing really kicks on in the last 50 km and in the long run the break didn't standa chance.

Verboven and Lobato finishes inside the main group, but was just too tired to so anything in the sprint. Points for effort though!

For some reason he wasn't allowed to wear his Morrocan champions jersey today, but he keeps the spirit high in spite of that, but with 20 km to go it looks like they will get caught and it will be time for Rudy to shine in the finish.

As expected it came down to a bunch sprint.

Rudy did his best, but Belkin and Sky had made an unholy alliance to keep all otehr teams away by blocking in a line across the road.

Bad luck is all that held Rudy away from a good result today. Or rather bad luck and unsporting behaviour!

Hey fans!

What a week! I've never been so frustrated in my entire life. Ok, Strade Bianchi was my own fault for not eating enough. And San Remo, well the distance killed me. But I was hoping for a good result in Nokere and look what happened!

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Nokere%20Koerse/PCM0030_zpscd71374b.jpg

I got completely boxed in and couldn't sprint properly! So frustrating, I really had good legs, but then suddenly there were guys all over the road who had nothing to do there. Belkin and Sky, I'm looking at you! I was absolutely furious after the race, so yeah, gonna stop her ebefore I say things that would result in a lawsuit.

The UCI have told us to go for white here, so we have sent both de las Campos and Ion Izagirre.

Sadly other strong youngsters such as de la Montagne and Hinault are here as well and they will benefit from the support of the home fans, so it will be tough.

Lobato will be hoping for a good result on the flat opening stage

With none of the big sprinter names present we were eager to set Lobto up for a good sprint and the team did great to secure the bunch sprint in spite of numerous attacks.

Minguez and Bilbao did a great job keeping the pressure high for Ion Izagirre to launch his leadout.
i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/PCM0120_zpsd0b59c2e.jpg

To great surprise for everyone Ion had a day massive enough to rocket away and take the stage win. Just as well since Lobato wasn't able to beat the other sprinters, but still finished 5th.

Time for a short TT.
i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/PCM0143_zps6c18c58e.jpg
Ion did great to defend his leaders jersey and finished 14th 19 seconds slower than Bradley Wiggins. Just enough to hold on to the jersey!

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/PCM0156_zps2c1cf1eb.jpg

The boys really worked hard to control the break and defend Ion's jerseys today, but with no help from the others Hinault managed to get a real gap.

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/PCM0176_zpsfd961139.jpg

After Ion dropped it was time for de las Campos to shine and he did by reeling in almost every attack. Again no one was willing to help us, so he had to use a lot of energy but still finished a solid 7th proving his potential.

Egiberri On - Merry Christmas [img-r]https://hl2mp.tsgk.com/hlstatsimg/flags/es_states/euskadi.png[/img-r]

arabatik.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/zorionak.jpg

Merry Christmas from Euskaltel - Euskadi to all.

At this time Olentzero has begun his travel towards the Basque villages.
Olentzero is a shepherd or coal man, who on this day every year comes down from the mountains on his pottok to bring good news to all and presents to the children.

As a baby he was found by a fairy and her helpers, the Prakagorri. They gave the baby to an old couple, who had not been able to hane any children for themself.

When his parents died many years later Olentzero began to feel lonely in his cabin in the woods all alone, so he started making wooden presents for the local orphanage as he figured they would be lonely as himself.

And so he continued for many years until he one day saw a lightning hit a house. Olentzero went into the house without hesitation to save the children and got them out safely. Sadly he himself was hit by a large wooden beam and his heart stopped.

At that time the fairy, that had saved him all those years ago appeared.
Touched by teh way he selflessly had dedicated his life to helping children with no parents she decided that he should have eternal life to continue that work and the Prakagorri volunteered to help him.

And every winter since then Olentzero have come with presents to the children, who has no parents or grandparents to give them presents.

You might have doubts, but in Euskadi we say that everything that has a name exists, if we believe it does.

The Full Story of Olentzero:
Spoiler
Source: https://www.buber....tzero.html
Olentzero: Izena duan guztia omen da,

with text and pictures by

Angel Benito Gastañaga)

(pg. 1: Betidanako gure basoetan ...)

In the forest, there are many different kinds of creatures that people can’t see.. They are all part of nature, and people have written many stories and fables about them.

When we go out in the mountains and the valleys, from a wonderful corner of the imagination they keep us company and take care of us.

(Hona hemen horietako baten kondaira...)

Here is the story of one of those beings, the story of Olentzero, a humble man who with his love comes into the heart of all creatures, real and imaginary.

(pg. 2: Behin batean ...)

Once upon a time, many many years ago, in the deep forests of the Basque Country, there lived a very beautiful fairy. Her hair was yellow like the sun and her eyes were very bright.

(Lamia guztiek bezala, ...)

Like all fairies, she looked after the people and she was always accompanied by some little and funny creatures, like goblins, called Prakagorri, or "red-pants," who helped her with her work.

(pg. 3: Egun batez, ...)

One day, when she was traveling through the mountains, she stopped to brush her hair next to a fountain. Suddenly, the Prakagorris noticed that something was moving among some ferns.

(Lamia bere ile kizkurra ..).

The fairy kept brushing and brushing her curly hair and didn’t notice anything until Prakagorris’ shouts caught her attention.

(pg. 4: Gizakume bat da hori.)

"It's a human baby," said the oldest of the goblins.

"Why did they leave it here?" said all the Prakagorris at once.

"I don’t know," said the fairy, "it is hard to understand how humans can be so heartless sometimes."

(Gaurtik aurrera, ...)

"From now on," said the fairy to the baby, "your name will be Olentzero, for it is wonderful thing to have found you. And I hereby give you the gifts of Strength, Courage and Love, for as long as you live."

Then the fairy picked up the baby and took him to an old house at the edge of the forest where there lived a man and a woman who had no children.

(pg. 5: Horien bihotza ...)

"They will be very, very happy to receive this child and they will take good care of it, I know" said the fairy, and she left the boy there in front of the door for them.

Very early in the morning, when the sun was just starting to come out, the man came out of the house to go milk the cows. He was very surprised to see the baby, and he called to his wife: "Love, come quickly! Come and see what I’ve found!"

Just as the fairy had predicted, the man and the woman were very, very happy to find this child. "How could we be so lucky!", said the woman. And immediately they covered the boy with a warm blanket and gave him some food, and they took him as their son.

(Honela mendi zoragarri haietan ...)

And that is how Olentzero came to grow up in those wonderful mountains, until he became a strong, healthy and lovable man. His parents were very happy and Olentzero was not at all worried about the strange way in which his parents had come to find him.

(pg. 6: Goizetik arratseraino ...)

Olentzero worked every day from morning till night, making coal and helping his aging father.

After many years the old couple who had been Olentzero’s loving parents finally died and Olentzero was left all alone in the house in the forest.

(pg. 7: Urteak joan, urteak etorri ...)

The years came and went and his face began to wrinkle and his hair began to turn white.

(Bere bihotza goibeltzen ...)

Living alone made him sad and he realized that what he needed to do was to help other people who needed his help.

He remembered that in the town there was a house where there lived some children who had no parents. They lived on whatever the people in the town gave them, and he realized that these children were very lonely, just like him, and that he could do things for them to make them happy.

(pg. 8: Olentzero gizon argia zen ...)

Olentzero was very clever and very good at making things with his hands, so he made some toys out of wood for those children: little toys and dolls, which he would take to the children when he went to town to sell his coal.

(pg. 9: Panpina eta gizontxoak bukatu zituenean ...)

When he finished the dolls and other toys, he put them in a big bag, put the bag on his donkey, and left for the town. He felt very happy inside that day, and his eyes were shining very brightly.

(Goiz guztia eman zuen mendiz mendi ..).

It took him a whole morning of walking through the mountains to get to the town, but he was very happy. He smiled as if in a dream, for he was going to give to the children the toys that he had made.

(pg. 10: Herriko txikiek ...)

The little children in the village were very happy when they got their presents, and Olentzero spent the whole afternoon playing with them and telling them stories that he had learned from his father when he was little. The boys and girls loved Olentzero very much and after that day they didn’t feel as lonely as before. Olentzero became very well known in that town. Whenever he approached, he would quickly be surrounded by children.

(Urte asko, eder eta zoriontsu ...)

This went on for many beautiful and happy years, but one day there was a terrible storm in the town and the mountains around it which destroyed many things. The cold, strong winds and the sound of thunder left the people very scared and upset, especially the children.

(pg. 11: Egun batez, ...)

One day, when Olentzero was coming to town, he saw some lightning hitting a house.

He quickly ran to the house and he saw some children at one of the windows, very scared, screaming and calling for help.

Without hesitating he went into the house, which was in flames, covered the children with a blanket to protect them from the fire, and carried them out of the house through a window in the first floor.

(pg. 12: Beretzat irtenbide bat ...)

But while he was trying to get out himself, a big old wooden beam from the ceiling fell on top of him. Olentzero fell down in great pain, and his strong and beautiful heart stopped.

The people in the town cried when they saw the house in flames, and what had happened, and realized that there was nothing they could do.

(Une larri hartan ...)

But right then they were all surprised by a bright light shining from inside the burning house. Nobody could see what was happening inside. But inside the house, the fairy who had found Olentzero in the mountains, when he was a baby so many years ago, appeared next to Olentzero and began calling his name in her sweet voice: "Olentzero! Olentzero!"

(pg. 13: Gizon handia izan zara ...)

She said: "Olentzero, you have been a good man, faithful and kind hearted. You have spent your life doing things for others, and you have even given your own life to save others. So I do not want you to die. I want you to live forever. From now on you will make toys and other presents for children who do not have parents in this town and everywhere in the Basque Country."

(pg. 14: Guk lagundu egingo dizugu!)

"And we will help you!" called out all the Prakagorri, flying around Olentzero.

(Honela, ...)

And that is how it came to pass that, that in the middle of every winter, at the end of every year, Olentzero goes to all the towns of Basque Country delivering toys and presents to children who don’t have parents and grandparents to give them presents. The children in all the towns celebrate the coming of the Olentzero by singing songs and spreading his message of love, strength and courage.

Some people don’t believe that Olentzero really exists. But in Basque there is an old saying: that everything that has a name exists, if we believe it does.

We started off with what we had labelled the first cobbled race of any significance to the team: Kuurne – Bruxelles – Kuurne. Rudy Verboven was the designated captain and finished 3rd in the bunch sprint. It just happened that the break was allowed to go all the way so it was only a sprint for 17th. It was all ok though as Ioannis was in the break and managed to get us a slightly surprising top 10.

On to Paris – Nice where a lot of riders were given a unique chance to prove their worth without the big names around with the goal being stage wins. They didn’t really do anything worth mentioning before stage 7 though. Fortunately Ion found it in him to get in the break and take the mountain jersey before finishing 4th on the stage. A very good result by Ion getting us our first jersey of the season.

Meanwhile in Tirreno – Adriatico the boys had a tough time due to all the TT’ing. Nevertheless Samu got us a podium as well as a GC 10th to go with Gorkas stage top 10. Not to overwhelming, but it will save him from going to Paris – Roubaix…

Strade Bianche was a learning experience for the team as we was confused by the lack of a language we could understand. I don’t know if that’s what caused the team to forget to tell Rudy to remember eating I don’t know but that’s what happened.

Another race in Italy meant another race not designed for us. Ricardo García went in Milano – Sanremo’s early break and did well, but that is far from what gets shown on the results list…

In Nokere – Koerse we were back on the cobbles and things went as planned with Tarik covering the break and Rudy waiting for the expected sprint. It came, but Sky and Belkin had made an unholy alliance to keep the finish from turning into a bike race. Unlucky for Rudy as he was looking great, but just had no space to move.

In a hectic month we managed to squeeze in another stage race in Critérium International. We were told to go after the youth jersey, so we sent our best young stage racers.
Ion took a highly surprising stage win in stage 1 and even managed to defend hiis jersey on stage 2.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Dwars%20Door%20Vlaanderen/PCM0005_zps31d499c1.jpg

We ended the month the same way it started: With cobbles. Dwaars door Vlaanderen didn't become quite the same success though as the most noteworthy thing happening was Tarik Chaoufi getting in the early break.

Rider of the Month

We have had several decent showing this month, but the way Ion Izagirre won the mountain jersey in Paris – Nice really embedded everything in the core of this team.
www.euskalteleuskadi.com/images/polonia1int.jpg

And then he followed that result up by winning the first stage of Critérium International by destroying everyone with what was supposed to be a leadout!

Coming Up

One leg will be continuing the cobbles campaign in Belgium while another will be looking for good results in Spain.

With Antón, Sánchez and Nieve present and no Time Trial we will be going after a great result in Volta Ciclista a Catalunya.

Likewise Antón and Nieve will continue to GP Miguel Indorain where they will be joined by among others Verboven, Lobato and Urtasun in case it should turn in to a bunch sprint.

A Glimpse of History

Due to the holidays this edition does not contain a proper article, but just a video highlighting the wins of 2007 along with some of the best Euskaltel-moments in the years before that.
