The last one is a bit jazzy indeed, but we just recorded that because our saxofonist is leaving and we recorded it as a goodbye song
I'm glad you like the start of The Wolves |

Just curious, how long did it take you to record? And did you self-produce and record at home, or record in a studio?
Sorry for the questions, I also recorded an EP recently and am just interested in how others go about it.
Also, it sounds great!

Thanks very much . The actual recordings didn't take too long, a take or two for guitar and bass and drums (although setting stuff up did take a while). And then there are guitar and keys and vocal overdubs which were the same but quicker to set-up. It was all home recorded as I have a couple of mates who are pretty well-equipped and I don't have the cash for a studio (especially as it's more about the songwriting in this case and having something to show promoters). Would be interested in hearing yours too |

Really? That's pretty good, it would take many people much longer. Setting up is probably the worst part, it took us 2 hours to set up the freaking drum kit! They sounded great for home recordings really, and studios are a pain in the ass
Nonetheless, I think it sounded pretty good
We recorded in a studio, at the state conservatorium (Luckily didn't have to pay to use it, our producer was a student there, so we only had to pay him for his time). We recorded 6 songs over a few weeks, it took forever. We're only a 3 piece, and as the only guitarist I had to record each guitar part at least 6 times. It was great fun though, we'd get there around 8 at night and leave at 3.
Here's the guy who helped us out's soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/eddiesalazar All 6 songs are there, not fully mixed/mastered as yet.

They sound great man, bit heavy for my delicate head at the moment but good quality clearly and nice songwriting. Does sound like fun as well. |

Thanks! It's a good bit of fun The lyrics aren't good at all, they were usually rushed and poorly written. I'm yet to write lyrics for a song though. I don't know why, I just find it difficult to put words to music I guess. What's your song-writing process?

I find generally that the vocal melody is the most difficult part for me but that's mostly because I find it hard not to accidentally steal from songs I love
It is often very difficult though, I went nearly two years without ever being happy enough with any lyrical ideas to write a song and then sometimes it comes to you. You can go ages without inspiration and then it all comes along at once. So keep a notepad (or if you're just make a draft text on your phone) so you can write down any lyrical ideas. If you think you can make it into a verse or even a whole song there and then, try it, but if not, just leave it and look back over it in 5 days or so. It may sound crap then and you throw it away, but some will still make sense to you.
If you find however that lyrical inspiration doesn't come along, I would suggest working hard at it. I'd suggest this anyway because, as with anything, you improve with practice. If you write the music to a song, record that and then spend as long as you consider worthwhile trying to write different selections of lyrics for it. Either you'll work it into something better than that which you're unhappy with at the moment or you'll work it into something you think is genuinely good.
For me, I would just add that it often seems to come along all at once - A Cage Without A Key was the first song for the EP and nearly the whole thing came to me while I was walking to the bus stop. But even with a simple song like that, it took me another month to see where I was going with the second verse and a few weeks further to decide how I would end the song. Then I left it, played it and edited the lyrics and phrasing before I went to record. |

Thanks for the write-up, very interesting
I do find that a day or two after I write something, I look back on it and think: "Well, I could have sworn this was better."
It depends on my mind a fair bit too.
I have one song I wrote a verse and chorus for, and I think its fantastic. I never usually like what I write when I look back on it. I'm now too scared to try and add anything to it, fearing i'll wreck it
My bandmates like to rush songs, so I have to try be quick and keep up. I prefer to take my time, which is why I haven't actually written really anything yet.
