This is a very nice little race taking part in Japan. With only around 60 riders taking part, the team should do well, we are one man short with no Roulston, but we expect O'Brien and Nateghi to shine, not forgetting Yildiz.
STAGE 1: Shingu - Shingu 1.9 KM's
Stage Favourites:
***Ignatiev(KAT) **Robert(LAN) *Delfosse(LAN)
The first stage was very short at just 1.9 kilometres in length. I expected the guys to give it 100%, so I was quite disappointed when I saw some guys on the team taking it quite easily. Probably because they knew that as the stage was more a celebration than anything else.
It was clear that O'Brien was going to be our best rider on the day, he would finish five seconds down. With only a few riders to finish it looked like Landbouwkrediet would finish with three men on the podium.
But first Iriate would break the potentially all Belgian podium then stage favourite and last man off Ignatiev would blitz the course and finish 1st winning by '1 second. O'Brien put in a decent performance for us finishing once again in the top 20 in a TT. With all riders finishing inside 20 seconds, Martinez was last @ 17 seconds down, the race organisers decided to credit everyone with the same time, to make the race more 'interesting' in the next few stages.

After the first really short stage, me and the team casually rode around the beautiful city of Shingu. After about one hour or so we went to sushi restaurant, boy was the food good, all you can eat as well! Needless to say I would soon lose the six pack if I ate there too often!
After the sushi escapades, we all rode around the city and the countryside for another 90 minutes before getting back to the hotel. As we believed we had a great chance of success in the next few stages we drew up battle plans. Morale was boosted!

--Yeah, will be interesting to see how the racing unfolds with less riders.
-- What thing? ...Do you mean the Godzilla replica someone randomly left on the side of the road
EDIT: We will do a lot of racing quickly I reckon when we get the Uzbek NC!

STAGE 2: Akagigiwa - Seiryu 110 KM's
Stage Favourites:
***Vichot(BSC) **Turgot(BSC) **Milan(EUS)
This stage was a very nice little stage which you could call a criterium. Nine laps of around 12 kilometres including a hill which is only 3 kilometres at an average of around 3%, most sprinters should survive the terrain well.
The racing underway and our very own Uzbek NC Lagutin goes on the attack looking resplendent in his newly acquired jersey. He does not make the three man break of the day, however, which contains: Urain(EUS) and young riders Horvath(DLA) and Weidner(SAS).
The race continues on with Katusha setting the pace and no other team really willing to contribute, Weidner takes the first KOM points. With 56 km's to go and the break at 3:00 Rabou(Landbouwkrediet) attacks.
With 50 kilometres to go we have had enough and send our Spanish contingent Lastras and Martinez to the front to set the pace, as we feel the testing terrain will suit both O'Brien and Nateghi.
Rabou joins up to the original break at the final mountain sprint and takes max points but Weidner finishes third and will take that mountain jersey.
Our guys did a great job on the front of the peloton, with 10 kilometres to go the break has less than 1:00 as we reach the final climb of the day.
O'Brien attacked! He was immediately countered by yellow jersey Ignatiev and Garcia (EUS) as well as Rabou who was still looking fresh despite being in the break.
With 6 kilometres to go, the four man break have a small advantage, but O'Brien is the only man willing to push on the pace, he doesn't want to carry the others to the line and everyone is together with5 kilometres to go.
It will be a sprint. Two trains have formed. One side we have big man Yildiz leading out Nateghi the other train being 'driven' by yellow jersey Ignatiev.
The class of the 'faster' sprinters on the paper shows and Larralde comes through for the win. Yildiz did a terrific leadout he is impressing me more and more with every performance, but Nateghi never really got into his rhythm. A good team effort on this stage, the next stage we will give it a go again!

After the stage me and the team went into the city and tried out the virtual reality helmets, which have really taken off since 2015. That was one really fun hour, amazing technology!
After that we all went to a local coffee shop, not like you get in Belgium but it wasn't bad! I think I might have spilled some of that coffee on the top image, whoops! |

Nice nc of Uzbekistan! The only reason why Lagutin has to stay in the team. And those random photoshops...
Nice, virtual helmets. But I guess they won't help very much. What's the next part, virtual bikes? Virtual bottles?

STAGE 3: Kumano - Sangaku 120 KM's
Stage Favourites:
***Izagirre(BSC) **Vichot(BSC) *Iriate(EUS)
This was a hilly stage, with a decent 5 kilometres 4% hill 20 kilometres from the finish, which could see the GC change hands.
Only two riders attacked in the first 25 kilometres they were Delfosse (Landbouwkrediet) and our very own, once again, Lagutin. However, both were brought back before the intermediate sprint, where the three lots of bonus seconds were claimed by Euskadi riders.
After that Windsor (Dual Temp) and Delfosse attacked and became the official break of the day. Delfosse would summit the first and second climbs (Senmaida and Fudatire) first to move into the KOM jersey. With 56 kilometres to go, the break had 3:00 and the orange ranks of Euskadi came to the front. Delfosse could often be seen waiting for Windsor who looked to be struggling, the break had no chance.
With 22 kilometres to go we reach the final climb all together, Euskadi continuing setting a hard pace but we attack! Lastras puts in a big effort. Ignatiev, Larralde, Wallays and Savini all look to counter.
But they can't get on terms straight away, Lastras has an advantage as he crests the final climb, 18 kilometres to go and it is mostly downhill.
Lastras is looking good and pulls out a big advantage, 1:00 over the chasers with 10 kilometres to go. But then Ignatiev attacks quickly reducing the gap, Larralde keeps countering the attacks as does Vichot, who fell earlier and our very own O'Brien. Nateghi is nowhere to be seen after sprinting for 3rd at the second intermediate sprint.
With 6 kilometres to go Lastras, has only about 15 seconds up. If Ignatiev continues on he will catch Lastras, but then Ignatiev slows, not wanting to drag Larralde to the line. This gives Lastras a second wind and he increases his advantage.

Lastras holds on the win. What a win. What a fighter. YES.
Truly an epic attack by the 41 year old, marvellous. My phone was off the hook with congratulations from journalists, Japanese and Belgian media alike, small race or not. Lastras will take the yellow jersey but it will be difficult to retain in after the final stage, as Larralde looks in great form. The stage was made sweeter as Yildiz possesses the white jersey.

Over in Oman the other half of the team were racing. An aggressive flat stage it was, Ghyllebert was part of an early 19 man break, it all came back for a sprint. Cardoso(SES) won for us Long finished 7th and Kupeshov finished 8th. What a day! |

STAGE 4: Taji - Hanto 106 KM's
Stage Favourites:
***Izagirre(BSC) **Vichot(BSC) *Pereyra(SAS)
The final stage in Kumano is only just over 100 kilometres and is a criterium around Hanto but has over 1400 meters of climbing, the terrain was up and down all day long.
Early on a break established which included one dangerman. That was Orbe(EUS) who was only 1:14 down, the break also included KOM jersey wearer Delfosse.
Needless to say our team had to take up the chase on the pelton. The first part of the stage we had white jersey Yildiz and Criel setting a good pace.
With 60 kilometres to go and the gap at 4:00 we really started to chase, now we also had Lagutin and Martinez contributing to the chase. The team looked really strong as the advantage began to lessen, I was pleased!
With 13 kilometres to go the break was splitting, the first to be dropped were Hernandez(Dual Temp) and Orbe, could this be our day?
Back in the peloton, green jersey Ignatiev attacked along with Vichot, Savini and a host of other GC favourites. We now sent Nateghi and O'Brien, who was feeling good, to the front to shut down these attacks, and they did albeit at the cost of sacrificing their own chances.
Igantiev attacked again with 6 kilometres to go, but O'Brien pulled him back. Only one man Delfosse was out front and he had a minimal advantage, If Larralde finished second he would win the overall.
An epic effort means Delfosse holds on for the win, but who finishes second? LASTRAS. Although the main sprinters finished together in the main group they were clearly tired from a difficult day finishing down in the bunch, but not Lastras who has a decent sprint from a small group. We win the Overall!
So we take the overall win at Kumano, the team's first stage race win, sure it's a small race but we had to start somewhere. All the team rode really well, Yildiz even took the white jersey.

TEAM CLASSIFICATION: BSC '0 over Euskadi-Euskaltel
YOUNG RIDER CLASSIFICATION: Yildiz '1'04 over Horvath.
In Oman, believe it or not it was really bad weather. Raining and heavy winds. A three man break broke away right from the start, none of our riders involed. Then with 10 kilometres to go as the peloton splintered and a number or riders crashed, Pasquelon, Visseres and Gallopin(who lost time on stage 1) attacked. They held off the remainder of the Katusha lead peloton who were going well over 50 km/h and Gallopin took the win. Our best finishers were Al-Zaid (18th) and C.S.Long (19th). I am flying over to Oman to cover the rest of the action.

STAGE 3: Sur - Sur 145 KM's
Stage Favourites:
***Colbrelli(KAT) **Cardoso(SAS) *Zabel(SAS)
Once again the start was frantic, many riders tried to get into the break of the day including our very own Omani Sulimani, but too many riders tried to get away for the peloton's liking.
With 100 kilometres to go Cziraki (Panathinaikos) and Beppu (Nippo) breaked clear, they would be joined by Klimov (Itera) and a rider from Cantabria Infinita.
Despite late strange attacks from Amador and Faiers, the stage looked destined to end in a sprint finish. When with 2 kilometres to go five riders broke clear, including two men from our team.
C.S.Long was the first to launch his final effort, Stauff (SAS) launched Cardoso but he had Al-Zaid on his wheel, Cardoso thought it was too early to launch his sprint and dithered, C.S.Long now had a big advantage.
But then the peloton rallied, the sprinters were unleashed.
C.S.Long blows and gets caught inside the last 200 meters, Kiwi Dempster takes the win, Long still did well for us to finish in the top 10, while once again Kupeshov was suffering big time. Big favourite Colbrelli disappoints.
