Just 45minutes for those of you who haven't yet to get in those final few votes!
Remember the scores total throughout the entire race, so grabbing an early lead might just be key to success! Wink

The day starts just outside of Roubaix, and yet cobbles will not be the focus of our stage, Instead the riders are faced with a winding 197km journey North East to the northern coast and Bolougne-Sur-Mer. The points of interest on this stage do not start to arrive until the second half of the day, condensing most of the action into the final 97km.

After the sprint in Senlecques, the riders start the snake into the finish line, which contains 2 Cat 3, and 2 Cat 4 climbs, before the final dash to the line, which is up a short but steep climb, 700m at 7.4%. It should be one for the punchy sprinters to contest, assuming they can get over the climbs on the way.

The Race

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0001_zps69ac1172.jpg
The KM0 sign was still visible behind the peloton as the attacks kicked off this morning, Monreal of Eddy-Merckx Indeland got things going, with this early attack...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0002_zpsdc8c6b37.jpg
It looks as though he may have gotten free and two more riders decided to risk bridging across. Semple of Drapac, and Beukeboom (De Rijke) are the duo in question, and seem to have no real issues with getting away.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0003_zps61f39495.jpg
It was looking rosy for the trio out in front until a further duo tried to do the same. The current KotM wearer will be under fire today, but if he can pick up some points, he'd be favourite to keep it for the rest of week one. Solomennikov followed the attack of Jayco's Lane, but these 5 were not a group the peloton liked, and so it all came back together again not long after their attack.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0004_zpsd7b20a06.jpg
The pace slowed once the original break was caught, and that allowed a group of 7 to get away and move beyond the 1'00 mark. Reynés of Nutrixxion started the move, he was followed by: Wren (Jamis); Boifava (Team Idea); Lane from the prevous attack, Stevenson (UKyouth); Bercz (Indeland) and Benetseder (Vorarlberg). They've all lost time over the previous days, and were allowed to open a gap of over 5'00 very quickly.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0006_zps08075d88.jpg
It's the cash prizes available in the sprints that make it worth contesting in the break. It was the austrian, Benetseder who managed to take the win, and the 7 riders left 8 points on offer for the first man through from the peloton...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0007_zps2ec6d11b.jpg
8 points taken by Magnus Beckstedt! He clearly wants to get involved in the duel for green, he really went for the sprint and from a long way out!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0008_zps6bef69dc.jpg
Back out in front the breakaway crest the first of the days climbs. The Côte de L'Éperche(4) is very similar to the final climb; 700m long but at a slightly harsher gradient, and the Italian Boifava is the man to take the point.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0009_zpse4dba9b3.jpg
After the gap peaks at 8'45, The peloton finally decides to crank up a gear. Concordia are the team taking on the chase, and they start to close down the gap over the hillier terrain.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0010_zps26f0354d.jpg
The second climb of the day, is the hardest of the Tour so far! The Côte de Mont Violette is 1km long, with an average gradient of 9.2%! Stevenson took the points for first, whilst Kotm1 winner Boifava was able to grab second place to collect the other available point.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0011_zps9e3c9821.jpg
A combination of a high pace, and a hard climb was enough to shred the peloton! 62 men were dropped on the ascent of the days second climb, never to come back. None of the favourites were the wrong side of the split, but most of the sprinters missed out, meaning they'll have no more opportunities to score today.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0012_zps10da4cac.jpg
With 18km to go things are looking less likely for the peloton, they still have a gap of 1'57, enough to cause a reaction in the pack. IG Sigma Sports Puncher, Dan Craven decides he's waited long enough, and attacks out of the peloton, followed by Itra-Katusha duo, Chernetskiy + Rudaskov.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0013_zps8841d6c7.jpg
Benetseder claims victory on the days 3rd summit, the riders are into the action packed final 15km now, and it seems several in the break are aware the stage win may be on the cards, as they choose not to contest the climbing sprint!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0014_zps34dcab3a.jpg
Meanwhile behind, things are getting steadily more frantic. The first attack was brought back, but as the peloton reach the summit of the final climb, Miche rider Franzoi decides to give it a go on the descent. He's fantastic downhills and clearly feels this is his shot to get away...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0016_zps3494f2e8.jpg
Franzoi is bale to get across to the breakaway with 11km to the line. Huub Duyn (De Rijke) has decided to try and join the party, and is the next of the days favourites to make an attack...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0018_zps6147f1dd.jpg
8km to go, and the impressive work from Concordia-Himmerland is enough to pull it all back together! The question now becomes, whose got enough left to take the victory over the final few climbs.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0019_zps40b2b2cd.jpg
7km to go... On the slopes of the Côte du Mont Lambert(3) (1.3km 8.4%) Duyn and Craven try to go again! Behind them, Franzoi is trying to counter once again, but he's losing ground on the better punchers out in front...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0020_zpsa3756c0d.jpg
It looks like the Dutchman has cracked Craven, and they've opened an impressive gap to the peloton up the hill, the clocks are suggestion 58" though given the speed he's moving at, it could well be more! The question only really remains, has he got enough to keep going after that attack?

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0021_zpsb3440542.jpg
1500m...The long descent into Bolougne-Sur-Mer was not exactly what Duyn needed, Franzoi was able to get back to Craven, and they were joined by Rabo CT's Van Der Lijke. The trio managed to get back to the De Rijke rider, and they have a 28" gap over the peloton with 800m to the base of the final climb...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0022_zps4a59b2ab.jpg
700m... It's Duyn who opens the sprint up right at the base of the climb! Meanwhile the pelotons gap is down to 700m, and the explosive Grajales is being towed into position by his competitive cyclist team!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0023_zps1e97ae75.jpg
200m... It looks like going earlier was the right decision for Duyn, after resting a bit on the descent into Bolougne, he seems to have the legs and with 200m the gap is growing, not shrinking! The peloton meanwhile has caught the other members of his attacks, and Grajales is flying around the outside!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0024_zpsf5e1ddf3.jpg
Duyn takes the stage win, with a time gap! Grajales manages to move around the breakaway and collect second place, whilst Craven is able to hang in there for a podium. The official time gap is 20" which should be enough to put the Dutch man into the lead!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Underdog%20Tour/PCM0029_zps2a1dfc43.jpg
And yes! The Punchers performance rewards him with the Maillot Jaune! Due to his victories on the final 2 climbs of the day, he would also be the owner of the Meilleur Grimpeur, however, obviously he'll have the Maillot Jaune tomorrow, and the Russian Solomennikov will actually keep the KotM prize!

Competition Results

We received 2 entrants for the first of our competitions, One from JesleyH and one from Daggen. We can announce that Daggen moves into the lead, with a score of 5 points after correctly selecting Differdange's Christian Poos as the 4th place on the stage.

Jesley was unlucky to only score one point, achieved through Dirk Mullers 7th place on the stage. If you missed out on the competition, be sure to join in next time before either of them get too far ahead!

Yeah, was hoping for a few more but hey Pfft
I'll see if the numbers improve as i go through the race, if people aren't interested then i'll stop running them Pfft

And @JesleyH and everyone else complimenting the reporting, thanks! Grin I'm trying to give as mush detail as possible, so im glad people like that Smile

FreitasPCM
Great stage from Duyn, where has he ended since he left Garmin. Pfft

baggieboys32
He's ended up as Maillot Jaune wearer in the Underdog tour Wink

Other than that though, not done much! going back to the CT hasn't got him far rreally

Yup, the swedes are looking deadly so far in the underdog tour! Smile

Nice to see that UK youth are getting mentions everyday Wink

Daggen
Swedes can apparently do other things than being good looking and afraid of arguments

Daggen
Daggen is waiting for a report. Daggen no get report. Daggen guessing people know what's going to happen

baggieboys32
Haha, I just played the next stage Daggen, though I have an exam tomorrow and have spent all day travelling, so you'll get 2 tomorrow, but i'm afraid, no stage today Sad

Daggen
no stage today + two stages tomorrow = one stage everyday

sutty68
I suppose that we will be very happy with two stages today then Smile
