I'm sure of getting negative points on this one, too.
Maybe a little funnier answers now, does that count as interesting?

Lets begin, quite randomly, with question number 1

Q: What animal buries its head in the sand?

A: All of you who said Ostriches got -10 points. Worms was another common answer, but didn't get you the full answer.

Nope, the real answer is absolutely nothing does - all it'd do would be to suffocate and die (although quite a few of you would want cats to do that - more later).

When ostriches are faced with danger, they run away, like any sensible animal. The myth that they buried their head is first recorded by historian Pliny the Elder. He also thought ostriches made their eggs hatch by looking at them aggressively.

www.hedweb.com/animimag/ostrich-head.jpg

This myth may have arisen as ostriches sometimes lie down in their nests, and with their necks stretched out flat, searching for predators.
Ostriches are very good digestively, with one lucky ostrich in London found to have eaten some rope, a film, an alarm clock, a cycle valve, a pencil, a comb, 3 gloves, a handkerchief, a gold necklace, a watch and some coins.
Some ostriches eat diamonds in Namibia.

Question 2: Where do gorilla's sleep?

A: A lot of you got the fact they live in nests. Its strictly one gorilla per nest, and take about 10 minutes to make, and even include a "mattress". Some accounts state that, mountain gorillas regularly sleep on a mound of their own dung, whilst lowland gorillas are hygienic and house-proud.

kida's answer is probably the most interesting

kida answered:
They sleep in nests, that they build daily, even if the other nest was a few feet away they make new ones, mostly it's the females and babies that sleep in the nests.

Q3: What's the best floor of a building to throw a cat from?

A lot of you answered the ground floor, and this is surprisingly wrong. The cats would actually be at risk from injury.

Another set of you answered the higher the better, saying you wanted the cats to die. Incredibly, this is actually the right answer (not the cat killing part).

The perfect answer would have said above the 7th floor, as above this, it doesn't matter how far the cat falls, along as it's oxygen supply holds out.
This is because, like many small animals, cats have a non-fatal terminal velocity - about 100kph/60mph. Once they relax when falling, they orientate themselves, spread out, and parachute to earth, to safety.

Humans have a terminal velocity of 195kph/120mph

Here's a picture of a cat, in case you were wondering what it looked like:

Question 4: What animal are the Canary Islands named after?

A: Well done to all you who looked at the latin name for the islands, which is Insula Canaria, which means Isle of Dogs, named by the Romans due to the large number of digs they found there.

Canary birds are named after the island. Tweety Pie is a famous canary, and a diet of red peppers turns them orange, although originally they were in fact greeny-brown.

www.poppyfields.net/poppy/images/birds/canary.jpg

It's an ironic coincidence that the Isle of Dogs in London has Canary Wharf on it

Some nice answers:
CrueTrue answered:
Hah! You want me to answer the Canary Bird, right? However, I know that it's the other way around -- that the bird is named after the Canary Islands. That must give some points for knowing a stupid fact

kida answered
Whilst on the subject of dogs and Spain, Alsatians are forbidden from serving in the Spainsh army, as they have an IQ of 60 and you need an IQ of 70 to serve in the Spainsh army

Question 5: Who first discovered the earth was round?

A bit of a trick question, which some of you picked up on.

All those people who gave a name of a person lost 10 points. Look at the quizzes theme, and its animals.

Only kida knew it was bees who first worked it out.

Honeybees have evolved a complex language to tell each other where the best nectar is, using the sun as a reference point. Amazingly, they can do this on overcats days, and at night, by calculating the position of the sun on the other side of the world!!!
This means they learn and store information.

Incredible.

Some people put bees on their body. These people are more commonly known as idiots

After an extended intermission, lets get back onto the answers Wink

Question number 6: What do camels store in their humps?

Water is the wrong answer. This is stored throughout their body, especially within the bloodstream.
Camels can lose 40% of their body weight before they are affected by it.

Camels in fact store fat in their humps.

An interesting fact about camels: Persian hunting hounds, known as Salukis, hunt on camels, laying on the camels back, watching for deer, then jumping 6 metres off the back to then catch the prey.

Camel racing is popular in the United Arab Emirates, and has now begun to use robot riders in place pf the traditional use of children.

Q7: How many toes does a two-toed sloth have?

Nope, not 2. It has 2 fingers, but 3 toes on each foot, making 6 in total.

3 toed sloths also have 3 toes on each foot, but have 3 fingers.

Interestingly, these 2 set of sloths are not related to each other.

They are the worlds slowest mammal, with a top speed of just over 1mph, but generally streak along at a rapid 2 metres per minute. They sleep for 14-19 hours per day, and live their whole life upside down.

Their metabolism is so slow, that it takes more than a month to digest food. In some cases, this is so slow, they can starve to death...on a full stomach.

Question 8: What are guinea-pigs used for?

They are mainly used for being eaten.

In Peru, 65 million are eaten per year, whilst the best part is apparently its cheeks.

They are very rarely used as laboratory animals nowadays, with 99% of labaratory animals being mice and rats.

Question 9: What colour is a panther?

-10 points to anyone who actually gave a colour.

The simple matter is that their is no such thing as a panther.

The animals most people think as panthers are either a black leopard, or black jaguars. Neither of these animals is completely black, as they have faintly visible spots on their skin. They carry a genetic mutation that means the pigment that is black in their fur dominates the orange Wink

Q10: How do moths feel about flames?

Nope. They are definitely not attracted to them. They are disorientated by them.

Moths use the moon and the sun to navigate, and as these are a long way away, the insects have evolved to expect the light from these objects to strike their eyes in the same place at different times, enabling them to be able to fly in a straight line.

When humans come along with their flames, the light confuses them, and it assumes its flying in a curved path, as its position in relation to the 'Sun' has changed. To make it stationary, the only thing a moth can do is fly round it in circles.
